More Formula 1 please! As an F1 fan, it was so refreshing to see Donut’s take on such a major topic. Great job covering this! Also, as many current F1 fans know, Ferrari has been running various aero design tests in each race so it’s great to see that they’re expanding their focus.
For me, Ferrari's downfall isn't about the management, the drivers, the developpement or anything else related to it. Its about the ambiance. It always feels like Ferrari is too proud to admit their mistakes, they don't want to look up to other teams, they want to have THEIR power unit, THEIR own chassis and aero. I have nothing against italians, but fucking hell the radio coms are making me so uncomfortable. They *have to* speak english by the rules, but everyone can feel neither the drivers nor the engineers can understand each other. "Ok. Understood. We are looking. Copy. Question." It's cringe, its like the drivers are talking to robots who have one programmed speech and can break down when you apply another variable of something called emotion. The whole atmosphere in the team is toxic. They want to win and act like they deserve and it's their *right* to win but can't, so it feels like they all get mad and disappointed, and their negativity impacts everyone in the team. Pitstops aren't good, cars aren't good, drivers aren't in their best shape (although I don't know how Charles dragged that trolley of a car to the podium TWICE), even the PR team is making a fool of itself. They don't want to earn their mistakes. To me they are doing a McLaren. A team at the very top who slowly falled down the grid to their worst position --probably ever, and just stay down feeling sorry for themselves. McLaren at the beginning of the hybrid era was a damn trainwreck, and everyone would agree that it was both sad and cringe to watch. In 2019 they turned it around, and look where they are now. 3rd in the standings, ahead of a car that is LITERALLY last year's Mercedes. Ferrari OBVIOUSLY need a staff change, and they need another vision, another approach. This isn't the early 2000 anymore. They can't compete by not looking further than their noses. It's like they are that old rock singer from the 80's who can't accept that his glory days are over. Ferrari's red means a lot, please stop putting shit stains all over it
They can't do anything right now, unless giving their best for the 2022 car. There is already a new engine on the way, which will provide a decent update to the existing one.

Plus Ferrari brought in updates to the car which were downgrades in 2018 mid season, due to which they embarrassingly had to revert back to the old spec car for the rest of the season On the other hand, Mercedes brought in aero updates and started to pull away from Ferrari after mid season

“Gray area” advantages are what all the top teams are looking for. They use them for as long as they can until the FIA rules them either legal or illegal, at which time either all teams adopt the advantage which basically evens the field back out, or the advantage is removed which sets whatever team was using it back to baseline. And there’s the catch. You shouldn’t rely on a “gray area” advantage to carry your team because if it gets taken away then you’re screwed. You have to have a really solid base platform to begin with, and only use those gray advantages as short term improvements. It was the same with the “F-Duct” situation. One team started it, Mercedes I believe, other teams copied it, FIA ruled it illegal, everyone was knocked back to baseline. This season we’ve got the Mercedes new rims to help them control tire temps, and now the FIA is going to be providing rims for everyone in the coming season, if I’m not mistaken. I’m not a huge F1 fan, I just like racing of all types so I catch bits and pieces of the F1 news and stuff. This is nothing new. It’s just that Ferrari seems to have relied too heavily of their potentially illegal fuel system, it got taken away and their car wasn’t up to snuff to continue to compete at the top. That’s on them for putting all their eggs in one basket. It really sucks for Ferrari fans imo.
However ferrari did not use a "gray area", ferrari tricked a sensor.. If you develop something new to put on the car that gives you an advantage for a year and it then deems to be illegal thats way diffrent than to delibiratly trick a fuel sensor...... That is a straight up cheat and they were obviously penilasied for it.
@@jonny8688 Ya, that’s fair enough. I guess it just depends on how broad you want to be with defining the gray area. Personally I would probably consider tricking a regulated sport-wide sensor like that to be more akin to cheating than a gray area advantage, but I would assume it could probably be argued either way. Like I said, I’m more of a general racing fan as opposed to an F1 fan so I don’t know many examples of gray area advantages in F1 off the top of my head to compare it to. I appreciate your input though!
@@CrippledMerc That would be the exact same as to say that athletes compete in lets say running that successefully fool doping tests would be in the gray area since they succeded in fooling the lab sensor and were clever enough to do so... You can only use xx ammount of fuel and a sensor is put in place to check so that ammount is not succeded so there is CLEAR rules of how much fuel that is legal to use. To then go out of your way and design a system that can put out MORE than the allowed limit is not and can not be called "gray area", it is a deliberate thougt out system to cheat. And its not like that cheat gave them a tiny advantage.. The gains they were getting from said cheat were enourmus and as soon as they were forced to stop dropped in ranking like a sinking stone in water....
@@yellow_x522 Yeah because he got shat on throughout by all the British teams using the Cosworth DFV like Lotus. Oh and throughout the 80s and 90s by the likes of Mclaren and Williams.
They focused development down a dead end and wasted tons of development time and budget. It was always going to be a case of being difficult to recover from that regardless of whether they were cheating or not. The chassis and aero would all of been developed around the expected engine performance and the whole balance just goes to hell if one of those goes wrong. Look at mercedes when they are not out in front, they developed the car to lead, not follow, so they can have real problems if they end up behind another team, bottas has shown this most often, but Lewis has too in some races. If the other teams get closer to mercedes next year and mercedes can't get out ahead, that will be their potential weakness, they have lost the engine mapping advantages too. Could be interesting to see how other teams do and how poor Ferrari will turn out to be. Though being poor in 2021 will have budget and development advantages for 2022 it has to be considered.
@@linomascioeorzo9853 so when someone sees Ferrari suffering because they're being punished for cheating, that person is apparently a Mercedes fan? Ok 🤦🏾
my point of view: 1. Ferrari gained advantage from illegal engine 2. Shitty aero package to fight Merc made car unstable in 2018-19 3. In 2020 they had to use legal engine so it suddenly got weaker and the aero package designed around that gave them a turd of a car.
The aero package in 2018 is actually good tho. It's just on 2019 they decided to change their aero philosopy into low donforce high speed. Half first season of 2019 was shit for ferrari, and then the next half season they decided to put all downforce package they could into that sf90, and that's why they could win 3 races in the last half season of 2019 with the help of illegal engine
About #2. Can’t recall where I’d originally seen it, but supposedly, Vettel prefers a car that’s more technical & tight whereas the last couple years the Ferrari’s are a bit more tail-happy with cornering. Essentially the car isn’t designed towards his strengths. Although that theory/explanation just leads to other questions.
The current chassis was designed for a much powerful engine, instead of the rushed 2017 modded version it's using, so the car is not working as it was designed to. The technical directive came too late.
@@mich722 exactly, Ferrari knew they lacked downforce but had plenty of power so designed a car for that, but suddenly lost all of the power at the season start.
Those weren't new regulations, they were clarifications and they introduced better ways to monitor if teams complied with them (a second fuel flow sensor). Ferrari was just caught red handed and with no short term alternatives
Hey Nolan, I’d love to see a wheel house video about new drivers to hit the F1 grid like Lando Charles George and Alvin and how it makes F1 a more interesting sport by making us know the drivers on another level. Love the channel by the way!
One thing I’ll say is Schumacher wasn’t the only reason Ferrari became a force in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. He was one of the main reasons but he wasn’t the only one. Jean Todt was brought in, in 93 and began reorganising the team. That was a key moment because without him they could never have lured Schumacher and later Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne from Benneton (now Renault and next year Alpine.) those four are majority responsible for Ferrari’s period of dominance.
campkira I disagree, some of the men involved in Ferrari’s era of dominance now hold high ranking positions within the FIA or Liberty Media who own F1. That is partly due to their success in making Ferrari the dominant team of the early 2000’s.
Dont give Schumacher the credit for what Brawn achieved. Not only did Schumacher only win with teams run by Brawn, but he refused to race for any team NOT run by Brawn.
My deductions: 1, Ferrari spent a few years developing their engine in a direction. This may be burning extra oil, working around the fuel rate limit, or water injection (used in older piston engine aircraft during takeoff, for more power). 2, Mercedes saw the threat and loaded more resources into their engine development program to keep up with Ferrari 3, FIA indicated that the Ferrari development direction is not cool 4, Ferrari have to dump 2 years of research and development. Mercedes engines are now making more power 5, Big rule changes scheduled for 2021. So Ferrari stop development in favor of the new regulation car 6, Rule changes get delayed a year to 2022. Ferrari are sad. I think the other engine suppliers saw that Ferrari were making more power and diverted resources to help make their engines better. Now we are seeing the results of this development, while Ferrari has had to delete the last few years of their development.
Those are some nice ways to say Ferrari got caught cheating and now have to downgrade their engine because they thought, in typical Ferrari arrogant fashion, they could get away with it. Hope those cocky bastards remain a bottom tier team for a long time to come.
Honestly is appalling they didn’t loose last years wins. But what’s even more concerning is the no investigation into LEC driving two laps with no seat belts on. That’s inexcusable, I honestly like LEC as a driver but with how important safety is especially after the tragic loss of The F2 driver them overlooking that is unacceptable
My understanding is that if you can find extra 100hp somewhere, naturally and physically I should too. However, regulations are man-made and can be influenced by factions. What makes more sense is to just measure the absolutes before and after the race, be it fuel, oil, coolant, or whatever. How I use them during the race is not FIA's business since here they appear to be not able to measure and log all of them for the whole race with confidence. Besides, as I said in another thread, flow sensors are not that easy to cheat since they can work at sub-second speed and you have to pulsate your flow very precisely to stay under the radar, which is I believe quite impossible and not beneficial.
Germany 2018 Seb's car had a piece of front wing end plate fly off the car a lap before the crash (in interchangeable conditions) Also, couple of races later, Seb won in SPA spectacularly. So, everyone just saying "Ferrari went downhill because of that crash" is just naive
True that , and people blaming Seb and not charles are also naive. As charles is sticking on at ferrari, the car they made is more suited to him and not Seb , hence Seb has no confidence in the car . Both their driving styles are different .
@@varunnangia5121 Seb likes a car with a planted rear end...he's said this multiple times and he was at his best in a RB with a blown diffuser granting obscene amounts of rear end downforce. Charles spent all of last year talking about how much more understeer was in the SF90 than he was used to. Seb is leaving and Charles isn't so they almost definitely balanced the car more to Charles liking (forward) than Seb's (rearward). The decision makes sense for Ferrari (especially with development freezes next year), so you can't blame them really, but saying Seb's lost his touch is bold. We'll see next year when Seb's in that 2019 merc how good he still is.
@@SARCASMlC that pink Mercedes already beat Red Bull earlier this season in most qualifying . And then Red Bull start push the rules to ban Mercedes party mode its because they don’t want to stay behind that pink Mercedes every race and fighting another Mercedes for 2nd spot in constructor. Next year seb gonna drive that cars with some upgrade from more dominant W11 , Must be more interesting. XD
Feels very bad to get podiums every season, win races most seasons, wow so bad...... Ferrari fans have it good compared to what other teams like Williams and mclaren have had to witness in previous years
TLDR: cheated during the 2019 bypassing/tricking fuel flow sensors. Other teams got wise, protested. F1 clarified engine rules, Ferrari bad from Austin onwards. FIA (also known as Ferrari International Assistance) came to Ferrari's aid in keeping it hush hush as Ferrari magnanimously agreed to not do it again. 2020 season, due to cheats, engine is poor and the car is pretty average too. Plus their lead driver is coasting since he's not there next year. Personal bias included here - Going forwards, their underperformance can continue for a long while.
And for now I think they are stuck with a chassis that was developed for more power, and therefore more down force. Lack of both really tells the story.
This is, of course, a lot of research crammed into 13 minutes! Awesome work! I don't really think it is the drivers to be blamed here. Ferrari had one the best driver line up at all times. When they were good and when they were terrible as well. If you cannot win a championship with Kimi Raikonnen and Fernando Alonso as teammates, I cannot think of a combination that will. The sheer amount of talent both these guys have is just incredible. The problem with Ferrari was the fact that everything was changing. Luca Di Montezemolo... fired... Stefano Domenicali ...fired Marco Mattiacci ....fired Maurizio Arrivabene ...fired well those are just the men at the top management by the way. The just kept on firing and hiring, hiring, and firing. And if this was the state of affairs in the top, I can't imagine what it may be like in the factory. I can relate to this a lot because where I used to work, I had 7 managers in 4 years and by the time I left the company, I couldn't possibly remember what the damn lady's name was. Then we had cars that were designed and developed by leaders who kept coming and going in a short time. And finally, we have the infamous Ferrari strategists. I mean... where does Ferrari get them from??? 2020 gave us moments where Sebastian Vettel is assigning tasks to his strategist while driving a Formula 1 car at almost 300 kmph. The team is a giant red mess and I really think Mattia Binotto has a lot on his plate. And he is definitely not the person who could fix the team. Someone like Maurizio (his return as a team principal again would be epic btw) is what the team needs.
Lol haha still I'd prefer an IS7😂 . The maus is so slow and the turrent cheeks are so weak I can easily own it with the is4 but then the ammo rack on the is7 is shit . More Formula 1 please! As an F1 fan, it was so refreshing to see Donut’s take on such a major topic. Great job covering this! Also, as many current F1 fans know, Ferrari has been running various aero design tests in each race so it’s great to see that they’re expanding their focus.
Ferrari: Don't write this down don't write that down!
@MR MARBLE charles the french maybe
@MR MARBLE it's a meme from spongebob "write that down2x"
Ferrari's red means a lot, please stop putting shit stains all over it
Right now the biggest problem in Ferrari is Binotto, fire him and the entire team will be a whole world better

“SO WHAT HAPPENED” yeah I was wondering the same thing
This comment deserves more likes!
This comment is too smart for F1 thick skull fans. They prefer "OMGGG VETTEL SAD SUICIDAL CAN'T RACE RIP" or "FERRARI BULLIED OMGG"

@@linomascioeorzo9853 not at all. I'm an impartial fan of the sport
Linò mascio e orzo, no one more toxic than ferraristi.
Ok 🤦🏾
my point of view:
1. Ferrari gained advantage from illegal engine
2. Shitty aero package to fight Merc made car unstable in 2018-19
@Mystic Dan their aero package is on par with williams now which George admit still too draggy.

One thing I’ll say is Schumacher wasn’t the only reason Ferrari became a force in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. He was one of the main reasons but he wasn’t the only one.
Jean Todt was brought in, in 93 and began reorganising the team. That was a key moment because without him they could never have lured Schumacher and later Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne from Benneton (now Renault and next year Alpine.) those four are majority responsible for Ferrari’s period of dominance.
yeah but it all who win...
campkira I disagree, some of the men involved in Ferrari’s era of dominance now hold high ranking positions within the FIA or Liberty Media who own F1.
That is partly due to their success in making Ferrari the dominant team of the early 2000’s.
Dont give Schumacher the credit for what Brawn achieved.
Not only did Schumacher only win with teams run by Brawn, but he refused to race for any team NOT run by Brawn.
My deductions:
1, Ferrari spent a few years developing their engine in a direction. This may be burning extra oil, working around the fuel rate limit, or water injection (used in older piston engine aircraft during takeoff, for more power).
2, Mercedes saw the threat and loaded more resources into their engine development program to keep up with Ferrari
3, FIA indicated that the Ferrari development direction is not cool
4, Ferrari have to dump 2 years of research and development. Mercedes engines are now making more power
5, Big rule changes scheduled for 2021. So Ferrari stop development in favor of the new regulation car
6, Rule changes get delayed a year to 2022.
That’s inexcusable, I honestly like LEC as a driver but with how important safety is especially after the tragic loss of The F2 driver them overlooking that is unacceptable
they are italian.. they don't care...
@@campkira that's literally nonsensical.
I hope nobody stereotypes you
My understanding is that if you can find extra 100hp somewhere, naturally and physically I should too.
Germany 2018 Seb's car had a piece of front wing end plate fly off the car a lap before the crash (in interchangeable conditions)
Also, couple of races later, Seb won in SPA spectacularly.

Also add in that other teams worked on a legitimate way to gain more power so while everyone else has gained Ferrari have essentially lost double.
I believe it was actually oil which the Ferrari was burning illegally, hence the directive from the FIA about oil consumption.
