    Peter seems like a very nice, patient & accomodating guy with positive vibes:) He's very conscientious over the surroundings, and is the one picking up all the fallen crumbs/popcorn etc.
    And he displayed heartfelt empathy with the story of the train-suicide-guy. I can feel it from the way Peter speaks, as he carefully inspects the mystery box and tears it open.
    at 31.24, the gentleman says nobody lives upstairs. BUT I just feel that there is really something up there! 😣You can feel it right?! ● There is definitely "someone" up there when you pointed your camera into that small opening above the vending machine!

      I was just about to reply with the same sentiment. Good thing he was brought along. He seems really cool, optimistic and respectful. A huge counterbalance without whom this whole thing might've been unwatchable.
      The chocolate bats seems like a box of giant Pocky which runs about $5 or $6 in the U.S., so I don't see a big deal. Besides, one guy is sporting a Brooks Brothers dress shirt and the other guy has a leather jacket at least $1k. A $6 mystery box is not the end of the world.

      albertravela and in Japan its bad manners to not to pick up your own trash and I think that at some places you can get fined for it. So basicly only ignorant turists litter in Japan.

    The warning board at 18:03 says: This is not a toilet and people who do nasty things here is going to have the photos or videos of their faces and naked butts published to the internet forever regardless of their gender. Which is ... well the most bizarre thing in this whole video.

    The whole thing is an Art Installation. The owner puts what he can find in the machines. The boxes with stories are part of the art. And yes, the story is what you are buying.
    Really, it's an Art Thing. Artists are weird.
    Glad you had fun.

    • @onlyinjapanGO
      @onlyinjapanGO  7 років тому +15

      LisaMarli thanks for this!! I really did get the feeling that it was art :) and I was INSIDE something very very very weird. Hope others find it and have fun with it too. -John

      LisaMarli do you know anything about upstairs

    • @kainuscorevax3875
      @kainuscorevax3875 6 років тому +6

      @LisaMarli Could you elaborate on how you know this? I've been trying to find a good explanation for these things. I've found many translations for the cover story's, but none for the hidden story's. All of the cover story's involve some sort of wrong doing ( from pooping on floors to infidelity and corporate embezzlement ). And all of the packages contain snacks, crackers to kit-kats. What message does this art convey to you? (honest question)
      And to everyone or anyone, do you have a better explanation? Do you live near there? or know some thing or someone who might have some idea?
      I don't know why but this is the mystery that has grabbed my brain today.
      Artists are weird is one answer but there could be another.

    I really enjoyed Peters contribution to this video. Not only was he the voice of reason but he was very positive. He did not act like the venue was more than it was or put down the location. Does Peter have a UA-cam channel?

  • @samoak7761
    @samoak7761 6 років тому +3

    I saw a mystery video here on UA-cam once, that talked about a semi famous serial killer in Japan, who use to leave scary messages with items placed in vending machines, randomly scattered all through out Japan. He killed over 150 people with this method, and still to this day was never captured, with no positive identities made. He is considered as infamous as the serial killer named, "the zodiac", in america. People still find and die from his vending machine surprises to this day and no one has come close to capturing him. This video reminded me of that story, while watching you guys pull out those, 570 yen, mystery packages, with eerie stories taped around them. You guys honestly had me freaking out for a second, do not eat that chocolate bat my friend, lol, please throw that away (asap) just in case. Great videos, really love to see all the amazing things in and around Japan. Wish I could go myself one day. Keep up the amazing videos and content, also do not forget to have fun as well as try new things, that's the most important part.
    take care - From A Fan

It's so nice and fun to come with you on these more casual, laid back, unscripted and less polished adventures. It really does feel like we are with you as opposed to watching a tv show. I love how people don't get that this is place is purposely set up this way to draw in tourists and curious locals. The boxes with the "creepy" messages on them are a dead giveaway. It's an easy way to get curious people to part with their cash.

      John may look like he's 40-45, but really he's 12. And the vending machine horror show is probably the creepiest thing in Tokyo. It probably outranks the demon haunted house thing John did at one of the hanami festivals he stopped at on his hitchhiking trip.

    My favorite food to buy from vending machines was hot corn soup. I first bought it, laughing (as you do), figuring I would take one sip and throw out the monstrosity of canned cuisine, but it was awesome. Whenever I wanted a hot meal quick, I'd just pop down the street to the machine and get a can of corn soup to warm myself up. My standard drink was "milk coffee" from the station vending machine every morning on the way to work, which was sweet and milky, almost as dessert-like as Starbucks.

    Isn't it obvious that if you go back to that little vending machine shop of horrors at night you will encounter Toby, having taken the form of Quasimodo, living upstairs. I don't recommend it. He might be very upset that you fed Yakitori to the local rats. You will end up a sad story sold in the vending machine.

    The happy family machine reminds me of the small story in Paranoia Agent with the three strangers meeting at the end they decide that life isn't so bad.

  • @Phaota
    @Phaota 5 років тому

    Tell me you not using one of the silly selfie sticks for this video? I like the various varieties of Chip Star potato chips in the machine, the Pringles of Japan. That Yakitori did not look like chicken and really did have a dog food appearance. I'm surprised it was good. Oooo, Nectar White Peach soda. Oh man, those are sooo good. Ooo nice, the Choco Panettone cake in a can is actually quite good. A bit dry, but still tasty. Well, you got something decent for the money in that box. Choco bats are pretty good. Basically a dehydrated breadstick covered in chocolate. I had one of those melon soda's in a semi-recent Japan Crate box. Wasn't all that great in taste IMO.
