  • Sorry about the length of this video. You may want to look at it in two parts but canning is lengthy.
This is my procedure on how to can Chow Chow. Chow Chow is a southern relish made from green tomatoes, cabbage, onions, peppers, etc. Garden ingredients.

I really do love the fact that" YOU DO HOLD ON TO FAMILY TRADITIONS " THESE TRADITIONS WILL FOREVER BE LOST IF IT WERE NOT FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU. I wish I had a grater like you mammas. That machine is way better than our modern food processors. Thanks 😊 for your video.

I grew up a Yankee, ate Chow Chow all my life. My Lithuanian mother made it after her mother taught her how to do it. I am eating the very last jar I made some 18 months ago. Love it ever so much.I am 87 years old and I plan to make a new batch in February.

Thank You, I remember making this every year when I was young with my Grandmother, Mother, Sister and Aunts They just needed me to turn the grinder. We made mild and Very hot Chow Chow It was all very good and never lasted very long. After watching this my Sisters and I (now in my seventies) got together and made a large batch and WOW we were back in our teen years. We will be making it from now on. Thanks Again.

I love that food processor. I also purchased a similar one about 25 years ago. MIne is called a "Salad Master" and it has about 6 different cylindrical attachments. Love that thing!

hello, I'm a ca. city girl moved to tn. and met and married a southern jent,20 yrs younger might I add , needless to say I never gardened or canned before , well he came up with talking about chow chow after we got married and I had my first garden , i learned how to waterbath can via the Internet , was scared of pressure canning so many horror stories lol , been going nuts canning,I love it ... I finally used my pressure canner, 2 weeks ago after having it sit in its box for 3 yrs , scared to death of it ... I'm using it now.. I'm so excited. .. anyways , I have to try this chow chow I made some for hubby but wasn't quite the way he liked it lol ... going to try yours this weekend,
weather hasn't let us start to plant our garden yet , so going to go to the Amish produce market , I've enjoyed your video and can't wait to make this and so much more this year since I am now retired ...thank you , your the greatest !

I have been making Chow Chow for years, I have always water bath canned it . you cook the ingredients for about 10 minutes, fill your jars and then put in the water bath for 10 minutes. You don't have to pressure cook anything that you use vinegar in..

☝🏻💁🏻‍♀️YES...AND your "debubbling" will be more accurate because there will be less of the possibility of hidden air pockets.
AFTER filling your jars...DEBUBBLE FIRST THEN WIPE THOSE RIMS & THREADS WITH A CLOTH DAMPENED WITH WHITE VINEGAR
Rings do not need to be in water HOWEVER they should ONLY be finger tight...NOT forced tight because the air must be able to escape
☆10 mins when 1000ft BELOW sea level 😁👍🏻

This is my first time making Chow Chow. I have scanned UA-cam for recipes. I have come up with a combination of a lot of different ones. I and my husband prefer a spicy chow chow so I am adding jalapenos, banana peppers and Anaheim peppers. I'm also adding dill and garlic. We shall see. You have an awesome recipe! For me it's just going to be trial and error. So far everything I have put up this year has turned out fabulous. Loved our garden this year it was totally organic. Next year adding to what we planted this year. Already have a lay out of our future garden. ❤

My your mama's grater and making chow chow took me back! I'm 58, and my grandma had a grater that was probably even older than yours! The main body of it was cast iron, and it fastened onto the edge of the table with a bolt. I remember helping her make chow chow when I was real little. Thank you for the recipe, as I had forgotten all about it over the years.

No problem! You were so right when you said we have to keep tradition. We lost my Nanny (great grandma) at almost 100 a few years ago, and my Grandma is 83 this Sept. I am going to help keep the old ways of doing things around too as long as I can. I grew up in Appalachia, in the Smokies. I really miss the old fashioned way and slower pace of my youth. Thanks and I look forward to more of your videos! Regards, CornStarch

Of course my Dutch partner doesn't really "get it"... :) But, I have fun! Again... thank you for the recipe... and awesome camera work. Your personality shines through!

Hi Grandma! I'm told the Iodine is an anti-bacterial so you don't want it in your canned vegetables, in particular your Lacto-fermented because it would destroy the good healthy in the process.

Goodness, CC! Another yummy "new-to-me" recipe. Sounds like a nice little treat to give to friends & neighbors, too. Actually, that bowl didn't seem too small; however, you might consider stirring the first half in the bowl before adding the second half OR mix half of each ingredient in separate bowls; thus, making combining easier/quicker.

Don't think there is any problem with water bathing your chow chow as it is pickled with vinegar. Some people water bath pickles and some just leave on the shelf. My mother always made chow chow when I was a little girl. I didn't eat it then, but I didn't eat much of anything that was good for me when I was young. This recipe sounds delicious. I don't want to call you Gramma as I am older than you (65). Keep up the wonderful videos!

My sister I'm from down south North Carolina. When I was a child my mother used red cabbage as well is pretty much the same thing just a different color. Just like you can use red yellow orange bell pepper in it as well. It's basically what your taste is.

@@sirthames thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I made it with the red since that’s what I had lol I liked the taste but I’ve never had it before so wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be a bit more on the bitter -ish side like a sauerkraut
