Recently purchased a Taylor 414ce-R. Indian rosewood, Spruce top, Tropical mahogany neck & Ebony fretboard. All gloss with Satin neck. Low-action, No Buzz Sounds phenomenal.
Satin makes a guitar look cheap especially on the front, back and sides. Ever see gloss-finished antique guitars, violins, basses, or any wooden instrument that has aged over time? Nothing comes close to an aged nitro finish. They look classy as hell. I will never own a satin-finished guitar. Don't mind a satin neck on a Fender but thats about it.
I got the Taylor 210ce (non-deluxe) last year and it's an absolutely lovely guitar that's a pleasure to play. Was able to get it on sale for under $1k even. Highly recommend.
At this price point, I would go for the the Taylor. Despite Taylor using laminates in their Mexico facility, the 200 DLX series sounds more balanced and pronounced (IMHO). Typically, Taylor guitars also have better action right out of the box and their quality control is excellent. All Taylor guitars have ebony fretboards and bridges and feature bolt on necks that are easily reset. The case is also amazing and fits the guitar like a glove! In contrast, the Martin features a Richlite board and bridge and I believe that it is made in their Mexico facility. Still, the Martin is a beautiful, well made guitar and sounds fantastic. I would be proud to own any of the guitars featured in this video.
Great video very informative for someone in the market. I think a nice addition to the video would be to play the same piece on all the guitars and snap back and forth between the guitars so the sound comparison is immediate with no dialogue buffer between. Note I say addition. The info is great.
Facts. Unlike the other guitars, a 15 series Martin is as good sounding as a guitar gets. You might want a different sound; but you won’t find a better sound at any price.
What about made in Japan Yamahas? Full solid. Torrefied tops. Amazing pickups. Great care and craftsmanship (You know how good the Japanese are at crafting).
The Gibson has a sizzle in the highs I love. It's like a delay effect. My theory is the walnut feet board is resonating the sound. So u have the sound hole n the fretboard both giving off sound. Has almost a metallic sound as well which I love.
If you are open to not being a solid wood snob, there are advantages in the layered woods in terms of how they can survive weather extremes. I moved to West Africa 15 years ago. The humidity extremes killed my solid maple Guild I had at the time. The bridge cracked in dry season and the back kerfing let go on the lower bout in rainy season..$500 in repairs. (Admittedly, I was not as diligent about humidifying as I should have been, not realizing how desert-like the climate was in dry season.) I traded in on a Taylor 114e. It's been a fantastic choice. After 14 years it needs a neck reset but (hallelujah!) the bolt-on neck makes that far more affordable.
Haha thank God my grandpa bought a d28hd back in the 40s still in excelent condition and I play it abour every other week. All I can say is thank you papa and thank you for your hard work and most of all thank you Lord for blessing me with what all you have blessed me with 🙏🙏❤🇺🇸
I have a Gibson J45 which I bought new in 2012 for 1,800€. I tried Martins and Taylors but definitely liked the J45 best of all. However, as they are made of wood, not all guitars sound the same and I tried several J45s before I bought mine. I also have a lot of time for Japanese acoustics. I have a Terada 12 string acoustic from the early 70's and it's the nicest 12 string I've ever played.
Ya for me it’s the Taylor. The Gibson has some nice characteristics but I don’t exclusively play blues style guitar so it wouldn’t be a flexible tool. I love the projection and brightness of the Taylor guitars. I own a 210ce but will probably upgrade to a 300-500 series within a year or so. Big improvement going from 200 to 300. I was a fool and sold my 2001 514 because of money needs and I wish I never ditched it. The guitar was so awesome.
my advice, get one guitar, the best one you can afford at all, and you will never be sorry , the $3000-Gibsons or a used Martin, the expensive guitars are often discounted as they move slowly, check reverb often, check guitar center and music go round often for used guitars online
“Italian acrylic is more passionate than American acrylic” ... absolute classic comment! Still chuckling ... ... is still plastic but comes with lots of hand gestures, facial expressions and maybe a glass of Chianti ... and not a hamburger in sight? ...
Martins have a good reputation, but they are a bit thin-sounding live. Buy an older Gibson, pre-1970, and they sound better than any new guitars. And I hate saying that because I hate Gibson for ripping me off in 1971.
I would go with a Larrivee D40R - all solid wood: rosewood back and sides, Sitka spruce top, ebony bridge, head plate and fingerboard, solid mahogany neck, bone nut and saddle, maple binding, inlay neck and head stock, made in America, specifically Oxnard, California. To my ear the D40R plays and sound as good or better than a Martin HD-28. Yet it’s street priced around $1,500.
I own an HD28 and have been told by some expert guitar players (I am not one) that it is one of the best sounding Martin they’ve ever heard. I’ve been thinking about buying a smaller body guitar just to play around the house and for ease of travel. I just know that my HD28 sounds so loud and beautiful it drowns out most other guitars.
I must admit..I am listening to this vid through my phone.. The Taylor seems to have this amazing chime and incredible lows and really sounds to to the pick of the 3 choices.. I love Gibson but must say Im dissapointed it the tone comparrison.. The Martin has that classic delta blues tone and I feel is kind of limited to that sound.. But rules that genre of music like no other..I would go..for the money with the more versatile tones of the Taylor. Great Vid!! Thanks!
I recently purchased a used GPCPA4 from a friend. To my ear, the Martin was much warmer and fuller than the Taylor 314, which I found could be quite bright. I'm also amazed at how resonant and responsive the GPC is. You can barely brush a string and the body will just ring forever. Very pleased so far. Thanks for the videos. Enjoy them greatly.
I appreciate the video. I could hear a significant difference in the volume and tonal quality. Just got my first Martin yesterday. Taylor so far for me, but the Martin will probably warm up.
I've finally played a Gibson J45 for the first time after playing a few Martins and Taylors, hands down the best guitar ive ever played although it's well over $2000 its 100% worth the money.
I have a vintage 1954 Gibson J-50 that belonged to my Uncle. I love it and am not looking to sell it anytime. I have been wanting a Hummingbird to go with it.
Thanks for the info ! But always an open Chord . Please could you do it playing and F at least ? To see playability, they’re all sound cool with open chord . Thanks and I like your videos !
Franklin Archambault I literately just got my 214ce last week. Oooohhh boy you wont be disappointed. It’s absolutely amazing. It’s one of those guitars that makes you say “yup, this is the one”
old guitars sound great... and smell awesome. in my opinion don't buy an expensive guitar right off the bat. get a mid range guitar. plays well.. but wont break the bank. ive played for 29 years my first was a cheap guitar, but it played well. my advice... have a guitar go with you to pick one out.... and neverrrrr ever just order one without playing. I don't care what the brand and reputation. I know a man that payed 4500 for a guitar that I would use as firewood
I bought a Fender and a PRS through the mail and had no problems whatsoever. And were there problems, I had 30 days to return them, no questions asked.
Thanks for the vid. Kinda disappointed not to see the Blueridge br-163a 000 didn't make the list. Truly amazing guitar, my guitar guru who owns many high-priced bought one the day he played mine, and says it's hard to imagine getting more guitar at that pricepoint. Again, thanks.
Just sold my 20 year old Taylor 414ce. It probably needed a new neck , as I wore the frets and board down playing it so much . Looking at another Taylor 614 or a martin dreadnought.
I am trying to buy another guitar for my wife. I want to surprise her so I don’t want to ask her input. She loves playing. She has a Gipson. It’s actually at Gipson repair center getting the neck repaired right now so I can’t tell you which Gipson. I’ll update this when I find out. I need suggestions. I don’t want to spend more than $3000ish. I don’t want her going backwards in terms of quality. Her parents got her the Gipson when she was in high school and the best I remember it was at-least a couple grand. They set the bar high 😂. If you guys got a recommendation please let me know. She loves playing country music if that helps. I am unfortunately starting pretty blind because I do not play. I’m considering a Martin d28. I also am kinda thinking about staying away from Gipson because of the warranty experience we are dealing with right now plus she has a Gipson and another brand may add some variety.
That's so sweet! We put a few recommendations here! They are very unique guitars and beautiful guitars. I reccomand a Raimundo mc801ce. Around the 1300 $ you get a cocobolo back and sides, ebony fretboard, gloss finish and european spruce top, all Spanish hand made. I you would do a review for such guitars and not only for Martin Taylor and all those fansy American brands again and again
The deluxe is a bit more high end, but I would recommend listening to them both before making a decision! The most important thing is your personal taste!
Alamo Music Center and also are they have difference when it comes in materials? I mean the wood that they are using to make the guitar more sound good and durable?cause the dlx is 200dollar more in price
The Deluxe uses Koa wood in body and it also using a forward shift bracing which gives more volume than the x bracing used in the 214ce plus. Additionally the deluxe comes with a hardshell case. I hope this gives a bit more clarity. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to ask!
If I step up to this level, I want a solid body, no laminate crap. The Taylor 300 series sounds nice, really sweet. But I think you said it wasn't made in the USA? The Martin 15 series seems to be the pick of the litter.
The Matin Grand performance body is a copy of Taylor’s Grand Auditorium Witch is a copy of the Larrivee L body. I prefers 15 series Martins to there more expensive guitars. 300 series Taylor’s are nearly as nice as there top line guitars at a much lower price. Gibson’s are inconsistent ranging from excellent to awful. Still a nice Gibson is a sweet guitar.
@@brendonleary Someone needs their binky. You have your own opinion, but no need to be so harsh or overly aggresive. It's almost comical how much of a vendetta you have against Taylor 😂😂
Wow!! I’ll take my Yairi and go Last Samurai on both your asses!!! Hah only joking!!! How anyone an call any of these guitars crap is beyond me!!! To each his own!! Just don’t Big Chris see you typing that shit about Taylor!!! You will need your Marteen for life essay!!!!!!
Great question. Rosewood and spruce is a good combination and a dreadnought style guitar is quintessential country but you could also go with a few other options. If you would like to visit about it I'm game. -Chris McKee 210-538-9399.
my main issue with taylors, especially the cheaper one´s . i cannot tell if its piezo or natural, they sound kinda piezo, when picked up by natural mic. can be upside for band setting , but not my cup of tea. and just to put in perspective, i own furch om from blue series, granted i am from czechia, so taylor will be probably slightly expensive here and furch over the pond. blue series is esentially simillar specs as 300, without electronics , it cost you you something around 1000 dollars and i dare say it sound way better than 300 taylor. if you have an option to try it, or if amc is willing to get them, honestly its difficult to get better bang for buck, provided you like the sound profile.
Bill Last high pressure lament is way to layer wood that makes it easier and cheaper to build guitars. It sacrifices some tone but I have played some that sound great. The better and more pricey guitars have solid wood
I love my 122 dollar Ashthorpe acoustic-electric from Amazon. There's truly cheap guitars out there that sound and look just as expensive as 1k bucks or above. Acoustic guitar uses so few components that it's hard for it to NOT sound good. Electric on the other hand is a little more complex, which is why all my electrics are above 600 bucks 😆
@@eddiegarcia6771 I agree. End of the day it's all about experience though. A seasoned player of over 20 years wouldn't be able to make do with cheaper gear after being spoiled by 1k+ guitars and amps, but an 8 year player like myself would be content with whatever sounds good.
I have had a lot of acoustic guitar over the years. A few over the $1K mark. Some being more than I'd like to admit. My keeper at this point is my Taylor 110. Plays as great as my Gibson's from over the years and the higher end Ibanez's and so on. This 110 is not with electronics or anything, but is Super musical and it's action is awesome as well. We good as Martin's I've played over the years as well. At time of purchase, I played less than $500.00 shipped. For me, this was the biggest bang for the buck to date.
Joseph, lots of people actually prefer a satin finish on their guitars, myself included. They feel and sound better to me having owned both types over the years. Gloss instruments do look more attractive though in some cases. I own a Taylor 324 all solid mahagony sunburst finish that is absolutely beautiful looking and sounds great. I had a LR Baggs Anthem installed for great plugged in sound.
I hate the feel of the gloss finishes on acoustics, it makes it feel cheap and can give a sticky feel. I’ve almost convinced myself that they sound worse too, whether that’s imagined or not. A satin finish develops nice character after using it for a while and absorbing oils from your body, showing a nice patina over time that always seems to develop symmetrically.
I always get amused by the "if it ain't a Martin, or Gibson or whatever comments. Each person had their own ears and they all differ. As well as the "plywood" comments. It isn't plywood by any means. If you believe that only a certain one or wood is to used you are missing the boat big time. I have played Martins that just didn't have it as well as about any other brand you care to mention. And sometimes it depends on the song itself. But if you keep your minds open, and try some of them you might be impressed. I know a guy that claims he won't play unless it is a Gibson. He wouldn't touch my Martin or Taylor at all. Finally one day he heard me playing and fell in love with my Taylor. He finally played it and couldn't believe how well it played. Then tried my Martin and couldn't decide which he liked best. Now he will play my Takamine as well as my others. Keep your minds open and enjoy music as it is meant to be. We all have our preferences and I am not impressed with the label at all.
Great video!!,but to clear my confusion, which front wood should I select if i want to use the guitar for mainly vocal (singing) purpose with occasional finger style?I have a mahagoni GS mini & I want to upgrade to a new guitar in this price range. I found that mahagoni isn't suiting with my vocals .pls suggest!!
My Martin 000 -18 came in at barely over 2000 at my local shop. You can buy it online for under 2000. So I don’t know what this guy is talking about unless he is quoting msrp which no one pays. If you’ve got 2000 to spend get a 000 -18 or a D-18. It will last you a lifetime and can easily be the only guitar you ever buy.
If I'm near my guitar I will play it. In been known to play for 4 or 5 hours a day..if I'm off work I will play..i learn something new every time I pick it up
My advice. Buy anything martin , taylor , yamaha.and you cannot go wrong. All 3 of these are good bang for the buck at any price point. I snm NOT saying there arent others that match up , just that these come to mind first. This is for steel string acoustics. Nylon classicsl guitars are a sepetate story.
I particularly liked the Gibson J15 for it's sound. I already have Gibson (for playability) and Martin (for that sound) but this has given me GAS once more - LOL.
I just ordered my Taylor 224ce-K. Will be here Thursday. I can’t wait!
Recently purchased a Taylor 414ce-R. Indian rosewood, Spruce top, Tropical mahogany neck & Ebony fretboard. All gloss with Satin neck. Low-action, No Buzz Sounds phenomenal.
Glad you like it! It's a great guitar!
I bought a new Gibson J-15 earlier this year and it really is an outstanding guitar. It punches way above its weight class.

Am I the only one who prefers the satin finish over the gloss?
I really love my Larrivee OM-03E with a satin finish. Really beautiful looking and sounding guitar.
I prefer a satin finish over gloss. Like a satin neck also.
Joseph Smith You’re not alone. Don’t like the texture of a gloss finish and how the light keeps reflecting on it when you shoot a video
Satin makes a guitar look cheap especially on the front, back and sides. Ever see gloss-finished antique guitars, violins, basses, or any wooden instrument that has aged over time? "It is an acrylic that is more passionate than an American acrylic" haha that made me chuckle
Most people don't know any difference between these and the $100 guitars. Let that sink in
Not true. Vast difference if you play.
Very nice description of the general tonal differences between Taylor/Martin/Gibson around 19:20.
Hey Chris it's Craig.(Sinker Redwood). Great vid.Really enjoyed. As usual. Have a great Christmas.
I have to admit that the Gibson J15 is a good deal for an American made guitar.
My Martin D-35 is well over $2000 but it is simply the best acoustic I’ve ever touched. Everything is just right
The Martin 15 Series are the best values on the market. $1299 for an American made Martin with a case. I have a D-15M.
I agree. Once you play a 15, you gotta have one.
Facts. Unlike the other guitars, a 15 series Martin is as good sounding as a guitar gets. You might want a different sound; but you won’t find a better sound at any price.

USA made Guild M20 (00 size) & D20 (Dred) are wonderful and in this price point, Comes with hardshell case. Satin finish ( which I prefer )
My made in CA Guild D-20 is my favorite acoustic of the 6 that I own. The satin finish allowed it to really open up after only 2 years.

IMO the Godin company (ie. Seagull, Simon and Patrick, Norman and Godin brands) makes some of the best "cheap but good playing" acoustics.

What is that microphone? Josephson? Shure? What was the recording chain?
Let us know what you think!

An electric acoustic might be a cool thing to get her! It's different from playing a normal acoustic so and it opens up a lot of new stylistic possibilities!

Dude, Martin D18, D28 or D35
I would suggest a Mardin D28
I reccomand a Raimundo mc801ce. Around the 1300 $ you get a cocobolo back and sides, ebony fretboard, gloss finish and european spruce top, all Spanish hand made. I you would do a review for such guitars and not only for Martin Taylor and all those fansy American brands again and again
What is better sir the 214ce dlx or the 214ce plus?
Let's see some Breedloves and Takamines!
If I step up to this level, I want a solid body, no laminate crap. The Taylor 300 series sounds nice, really sweet. But I think you said it wasn't made in the USA? The Martin 15 series seems to be the pick of the litter.
300+ mostly made in CA.
HOW DO YOU DO STUFF WITH LEFT HAND THATS NOT JUST CHORDS
practice scales, improvisation, and some music theory wouldn't hurt
The Matin Grand performance body is a copy of Taylor’s Grand Auditorium Witch is a copy of the Larrivee L body. I prefers 15 series Martins to there more expensive guitars. 300 series Taylor’s are nearly as nice as there top line guitars at a much lower price. Gibson’s are inconsistent ranging from excellent to awful. Still a nice Gibson is a sweet guitar.
epi hummingbird is better than either cheapie you listed
@@brendonleary Someone needs their binky. You have your own opinion, but no need to be so harsh or overly aggresive. It's almost comical how much of a vendetta you have against Taylor 😂😂
@@toraow. Don't get so butt hurt mate. Your Taylor suits you just fine.
@@brendonleary I own more martins than taylors buddy. Stick to your broke ass yamahas
Another great video! Please consider adding the song you are playing to the notes section....thanks
Yamaha AC3R all solid spruce/rosewood. Best value for the money hands down.
been strongly lokking at the a3r, tough to find one to try. from the vids ive seen the plugged in sound is better han most
ac5r dlx
How many pick ups doze the guitar hold
What guitar would you recommend for a singer/ songwriter that performs solo shows in the Classic Country genre?
Great question. Rosewood and spruce is a good combination and a dreadnought style guitar is quintessential country but you could also go with a few other options. If you would like to visit about it I'm game. -Chris McKee 210-538-9399.
@@AlamoMusic thank you for replying and so quickly at that!
my main issue with taylors, especially the cheaper one´s . i cannot tell if its piezo or natural, they sound kinda piezo, when picked up by natural mic. can be upside for band setting , but not my cup of tea.
and just to put in perspective, i own furch om from blue series, granted i am from czechia, so taylor will be probably slightly expensive here and furch over the pond. blue series is esentially simillar specs as 300, without electronics , it cost you you something around 1000 dollars and i dare say it sound way better than 300 taylor. if you have an option to try it, or if amc is willing to get them, honestly its difficult to get better bang for buck, provided you like the sound profile.
What is meant by layered back and sides rosewood as opposed to just being rosewood is it less quality cheaper made guitar please reply
Bill Last high pressure lament is way to layer wood that makes it easier and cheaper to build guitars. It sacrifices some tone but I have played some that sound great. The better and more pricey guitars have solid wood
Solid usually sounds better but it's more likely to crack.
What mic set up are you using??
Are you plugging in or just microphone?
We mic'd the guitars! (:
With satin u can always go gloss ,no ?
so precious you don't want to gig with it?!??! I don't even understand that concept.....guitars that aren't played are sad creatures.
The D15 'nought is amazing. Monster bass!
Great revue, may I ask what mic you used here please?
@@eddiegarcia6771 Lol facts
I have had a lot of acoustic guitar over the years. A few over the $1K mark. Some being more than I'd like to admit. My keeper at this point is my Taylor 110. Plays as great as my Gibson's from over the years and the higher end Ibanez's and so on. This 110 is not with electronics or anything, but is Super musical and it's action is awesome as well. We good as Martin's I've played over the years as well. At time of purchase, I played less than $500.00 shipped. For me, this was the biggest bang for the buck to date.
Will you also make the video $2000 to $3000?
What type of microphone are you using for the video?
I looked it up and it seems a Shure Beta 181. Is that correct? It captures the sound really nicely!
All nice the J15 is a stunning guitar to look at.
Martin 000-13E vs Gibson-G45 Standard..how do these compare to what’s been played here?
Martin is beautiful
Nothing from the Yamah Red series?
All amazing guitars. I am surprised with the nice sound from the Gibson.
No Guild?
no doubt
Guild sucks.
The new Guilds are awesome
yamaha?
what microphone are you using to record guitar?
Shure Beta 181
Why are none of the necks bound?
My Martin 000 -18 came in at barely over 2000 at my local shop. You can buy it online for under 2000. So I don’t know what this guy is talking about unless he is quoting msrp which no one pays. If you’ve got 2000 to spend get a 000 -18 or a D-18. It will last you a lifetime and can easily be the only guitar you ever buy.
you should have guild there too, they are just as good.I have a '63 j45 that sounds just like the j15!
I own a 00015m and a Gibson j15. As you can imagine, I am a happy man 😊
I have the Martin but sadly haven't learned to play guitar yet lol D15
Hope you learned a chord or two by now. Learning guitar is a helluva challenge and a great journey because you are always learning new stuff.
I've been playing guitar for more than 40 years and still learning.
Pick it up brother U will love it.
If I'm near my guitar I will play it. In been known to play for 4 or 5 hours a day..if I'm off work I will play..i learn something new every time I pick it up
Greg Mccarter what u play ?? What kind of guit ?
I have a Martin 000-15m. I would sooner sell my children than get rid of this guitar. Go figure....
Same here dude, love my 000-15m.
Gibson J15 wins by a mile. Or two, lol. Late to the party, I know. :P
You might have missed Guild in your title.
Hi do you ship to canada (Montreal)?
Ummm. All Taylor’s come with a case. Why are you charging for it?
I particularly liked the Gibson J15 for it's sound. I already have Gibson (for playability) and Martin (for that sound) but this has given me GAS once more - LOL.
I have one and highly recommend it. They are really outstanding guitars for the money.
They give the best guitar in this range hands down. I never thought I’d have a Gibson, but you just can’t argue.
Got a lefty model on the way. Kudos for Gibson making lefty models across their entire 2018 lineup!!
