Forward-shifted, scalloped X-bracing, tortoise-shell pattern pick-guard, open-tuners etc. Most of which mattered to little to me as such, but WOW! This guitar shames all the others for sound. It's a POWERFUL bluegrass machine! It's noticeably lighter that the '28, and doesn't have the latter's delightful rosewood fragrance when you first open the case, but it pins your ears back for loudness, crispness and definition. It puts my HD-28 in its place, for sure. I think Martin have out-done themselves on this iteration of the D-18. It blows their other offerings away, and that's saying something. For the record, both my guitars are strung with Elixir nanoweb 13/56 strings in 80/20 bronze. I mention this because no guitar comparison is meaningful unless their strings are the same. As a post-script, I'm NOT a fan of the "new" D-18's 1 3/4" string spacing at the nut. I prefer the HD-28's closer spacing, but I've learnt to live with both.
I too have a Martin HD28 which I bought back in 2005. What a guitar. I lived just outside of San Antonio for almost seven years. I was a worship pastor at a decent-sized church and led with an acoustic guitar. How did I never hear of Alamo Music? I usually ended up at Sam Ash when I had an instrumental need. Now I live in Montana and wish I had the chance to visit your establishment at least once before we moved.
@@ramencurry6672 Already have a Yamaha. Good guitar. But I was successful in my guitar safari. Bought a Martin G-42 which has marijuana artwork painted on the front.
Thanks. Love Martin. Love Santa Cruz too. The people make the difference on close calls. Martin's Dick Boak (retired) & Chris (retired) at Martin Co plus colleagues make that difference. Richard Hoover and crew of Santa Cruz do too. By the way surely you know you had a ground loop issue on your audio, otherwise nice video.
I made a list of preferences... bling was not on my list. I wanted a dreadnought, 1 3/4 nut, 2 5/16 width at the bridge, forward shifted scalloped (5/16) bracing, adjustable truss rod a must, adirondack top, no electronics (I prefer K&K), butterbean open backed tuners, ebony fingerboard, bone nut & saddle, ebony bridge, rosewood back & sides with (most importantly) top quality tone. I wanted a used guitar, not new. I liked the modified V neck but it was not essential. No way I could afford Brazilian and Madagascar was also a bit pricey. So... 2 years ago I bought a EIRW used 2008 D-28 Marquis (Martin has discontinued this guitar so I'm lucky to have mine). Absolutely LOVE it. WOW! I'll never sell it, wonderful tone, stunning bass with clear chime in the highs. I just purchased a sister guitar for my adult (much better playing) son in mahogany... 2001 D-18GE (also adirondack top) in excellent condition. What a stunning guitar. They really compliment each other when we play together. We are set for life.
Snuffy Ballparks: I have heard the same thing from others about this guitar. The word is out and they are hard to find at a reasonable price. You are very lucky!
@@devbrit2104 I was being facetious... and I would not buy another new MARTIN. Their customer servvice sucks. I bought a new one a few years ago, two weeks of owning it had issues guitar center could not service it as they are not a service center for Martin guitars. Shipped back and they had it for a year. No guitar, no money. I sued Guitar center and got my money back. I have an old Martin from the early 80s I forget the model I guess it is like a $4000 guitar or something I love that guitar has amazing sound. But I put tape over the name on the headstock when playing out because I hate the company. And I believe they make amazing instruments and have for many decades. They are so politically involved, I think they should stick to making guitars and work on customer service rather than politics. Anyways thanks for the tip and cheers to making great music. At the end of the day that is what it is all about. I am sure there are many wonderful people at Martin and that's why I didn't make videos etc I didnt wanna be THAT GUY. I am so frustrated with the whole situation it still bothers me. One would think with all of the options of guitars these days, they would appreciate their customer base much more. IDK I am a marketing guy so that is my thought anyways. Guild is making some amazing stuff AMERICAN... that may be my next purchase. I just spent $3,000 on a Music Man Axis electric guitar and I am running out of room for more guitars but I am sure I will squeak one in here or there somehow LOL

I have a 1958 0-18 which never goes out of tune. I have had it since I was a teen ager and used it constantly to earn my living singing & teaching. I used to use Silk-steel strings because I want to feature the voice, not the guitar. I play traditional music. I was having to change my strings every couple of months. For going forward-I have to change my strings and would love a recommendation for the kind of strings to use. I am 80 and it is difficult for me to have to change strings every 2 months as I don't bend as well as I used to. Suggestions?
@@AlamoMusic I watched this, but my question is about string replacement. I have my 018 and it is just the right size for my small hands. I need to know what brand or type of strings you recommend. As I said, I want to feature my voice over the guitar so I was using Silk/steel, but I have to change them quite often. I use my guitar at least once a week to teach and perform. Thanks
Try a set of these (low tension). Read about their philosophy. Very interesting. I’ve had a set of ‘lows’ on my Martin 00016c since mid Dec ‘20 and they still sound good. santacruzguitar.com/santa-cruz-parabolic-tension-strings/
Yes made with hot hide glue which is the best glue for letting the tone ring through. Now they are using modern glue's which while easier to use simply does not dry as hard and thus does not sound as good to my ear. If I ever decide to have a custom built I will ask that HHG be used where ever possible.
the DRS1 is completely legit. rich, balanced, resonant, easy to play, delivers rich balanced sounds with capo up the neck and various tunings. great to fingerplay and addictive as a strummer. always beckons you to play or practice more. find myself opening the case and hanging with it more often than any other instrument I've owned. its not an uptown girl but a true sweetheart. oh, although i highly recommend nickel bronze strings. thats where the added dimensions of the guitar come out.
....and I can guide you to whether you need to apply for a silver or gold mastercard.... If you're going to go Martin: D-18, D-28, 000-18, 000-28. All of these four have real wood and hold their value. The later two have shorter scale lengths, and 000-28 as played by Eric Clapton. The first two guitars played by, well too many A list artists to mention.
I have an old Taylor 110 that I have compared to many many models of Taylor. The only one that had as lovely a tone was one of their top of the line concert models priced at many times more than the 110. So you can't always go by price or model. Let your ears do the buying and your fingers choose the most playability for your pocket.
Little late, but anyone looking at a 110… I’ve had mine for 17 years and it’s still my everyday pickup guitar to play when I walk by the guitar stand. It’s the 110ce(?) with the active pickups, but it’s been 15+ years since I’ve even put a battery in it. A great guitar for the 20 minutes a day or the 2 hour when you find the time player. A+ choice for beginner to intermediate player
Hi, I currently own a Taylor 110e but was thinking about purchasing Martin D10e, would you say this guitar would be an upgrade? Or is there not a big difference?
Best video you've ever done! For a lot of amateur musicians like myself there's Gibson, Fender, and Martin period. Nothing else matters! Many good one's out there but I won't buy them unless it's one a them. Mainly for resale purposes, if it "says" Gibson, Fender or Martin it gets your attention...
I have 25 or more guitars from Gibson to good tacamini to guild to Torrified yamaha and just bought my first martin, not even an expensive one. I bought the d 13 and it simply blows away every other guitar I have period. I had been resistant but I am blown away. I finally have a guitar i am in love with. I still like some of my others but I take this one everywhere. Actually did something I've never done, sold 3 guitars and will sell more all because I'm so happy with the martin. D35 is in my future.
After owning a great Martin and selling it, I decided to go with a Yamaha Fgx5 and haven't looked back. The guitar has all solid woods, Bone nut\saddle with electronics and an amazing sound. For me it plays and sounds much better than my Martin without a setup and I saved a thousand bucks. I never knew Yamaha makes such quality instruments, I would've paid Martin prices for this Yamaha, it's that good!
I was looking for some specific specs in a steel string dread. I prefered an Adirondack top. Prefered 5/16" scalloped, forward shifted bracing with 1 3/4" nut. Much prefered an adjustable truss rod. Brazilian Rosewood was WAY out of my price range but was willing to do Madagascar or East Indian Rosewood. I really like a bit wider string setting at the saddle. 2 5/16" was ideal for me and fingerpicking. Didn't care much about bling. I wanted the best tone I could get for the money, so I went for used. An Adirondack top needs time to open up anyway. Went with a 2008 D-28 Marquis NT. Wow... love this powerhouse cannon. The guitar is now discontinued by Martin. Glad I got mine. I'll never sell it.
I have to concur that the lack of audio quality really defeated the intent of your effort. Concept was great, as was the information and presentation, but honestly, anyone that doesn’t know the true Martin sound would think the plastic guitars at Walmart sound better.
I'm lucky enough to have an X-series 12-string (ca. 2005) and a custom shop dreadnought (2020), kind of two extremes, and I like them both. I had a DC-MMVE (2016), but it was heavy and not very resonant. They really do make a guitar for everyone, but finding the right one requires some experience to know what you want and some help from your dealer. Luckily, the resale values, at least on the US-made models, are high enough you can buy one, use it for a few years, and resell it if you find you like another model better.
Martins and Lakewoods sound the best. If you're on a budget you should go with a Norman guitar from their ST (Studio) lineup. There's just something about these Canadian luthiers, they really know what they're doing. They are the best sounding guitars in their respective price range. And I'm saying that as someone who listened to many guitars and isn't invested in a single brand. Most of the entry model Martin's have a lot of things that could be criticized like e.g. plastic nuts etc. and you'll still be paying 2 grands on them. I don't know about you but for that price, you can expect a slightly better build quality IMHO.
AntonioKowatsch Hi! I had the Norman studio. Great guitar but I traded it for a long wanted ooo-15m Martin which sound blew the Norman by far...an extreme difference! I didn't expect such a discrepancy. Cheers!
You Guys gotta hurry and get the (now)limited Martin Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar $899.oo I got one six months ago. It's their real mcCoy dreadnought solid mahogany It's my main player now. I put solid brass push pins and a TUSQ saddle in the bridge. That's the formula for the best guitar I've ever played. THey are made in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.
Your microphone element seems to be aimed a bit too directly into the sound hole woofing a bit, however the Martin line up as always is the ever loving benchmark!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing video...All wood- sitka spruce top, rosewood/mahagony back and sides, fishman pickup with tuner, with a cutaway, grand auditorium guitar. Which martin guitar series come close to these features.?
Now I'm really confused. It's a good thing I know what I'm doing, what I want, and thoroughly investigated before I bought my OM-28. Wish I had enough cash to have the same model with Adirondack spruce and Madagascar or Brazilian rosewood. You get it... wish I could.
I've got the dcrsgt.....she plays better and better everyday completely love this guitar only thing is I'm in AZ. So I have to hydrate the guitar constantly but she's worth it
Great video. I see the last guitar you profiled was the 0000 body size. What do you think of that body size? I see martin also released a m-36 for 2018 with that body size - how would you think about that vs. an OM-28, for example, for someone who mostly strums and does a finger picking occasionally?
Another well-done video, as usual! To my ear, the D Jr is the star of the Mexican-made lineup. Both in this video and in person it sounds closer to the quality of the American 15 series than the DRS1 does - and miles ahead of anything from the X Series. I liked the DRS1 when I tried it, but the Jr is the one I wanted to take home. Also, I'm a huge fan of Martins, but I have to say when it comes to foreign-made, budget friendly, giggable guitars, Breedlove's Stage Series has a bit of an edge. Real mahogany for just a little more than the DRS2 with sapele, and a solid Indian rosewood variant for $100 more. I'd also consider a Seagull Maritime SWS over the Road Series - higher-end tonewoods at about the same or lower prices. Any thoughts on those Breedloves and Seagulls?
Roy Meyer I like both. Seagull is a great brand and the straight string pull headstock is great though some don't like the aesthetic. Same with Breedlove, although I have a soft spot for their original designs. Typically foreign built guitars are outsourced. Not sure who is building the Breedloves but the quality is high. -Chris Mckee
Martin as does many guitar makers, have the most confusing array of guitars imaginable! How can one ever decide “ which is the right one” to buy. Are soooooooo many choices really needed???? I guess I’m just finding such a line up, overwhelming and not necessarily. They do put a lot of people to work.... and any Martin sounds good and many sound the same!
And which models will stand test of time as an heirloom? Only the standard series? How does the GPCPA1 compare to the GCOA2 compared to the GPCPA 3 or newer GPCPA4? How does the Rosewood back and sides sound versus the Mahogany equivalent versus the new Sapele bodies on same guitar? Thanks! And I hear the new analogue electronics are different from the original Fishman Aura? Any thoughts?
Hey you can get a Taylor 114ce with a case(heavy bag), a pick up, and built in Mexico for $750. I just bought one for that price. Not trying to be argumentative just throwing that out there. That being said Martin's sound is different than Taylor's.
The Taylor 114ce-SB could compete with the Road Series. For $1000.00 with case, the 114ce-SB plays and sounds amazing. It has a solid Sitka Spuce top while having a walnut layered back and sides but it would keep up with the Martin Mexican made Road series. The Taylor 114ce-SB would be comparable if not even better. It’s also one of three special editions by Taylor. Trust me as I own the Martin D-15m and my 114ce-SB, in my opinion sounds better. It’s even really good with lower tones. The Martin D-15m does have a bit more low end but the Taylor 114ce-SB hold it’s on regarding the lower tone, mid tone, and the highs. Like the Martin D15m the Taylor also had the 1 11/16 nut width un like the D-18 with the 1 3/4 nut width the D-15m has 1 11/16 as the Taylor.
Best Martin guitars are, when you buy it, when you play & take care of it for next 10-15 years with your growing skill, when you create own song & love your own, no matter the type are. Because the best guitars are the custome made by your own life & creativity.
Hey Chris found out that those transacoustic batteries only last up to ten hours depending on effect level. I was reading what people were saying about the battery life. Thought you might want to know. I can't keep batteries in pedals already. Oh well

If you’re on a budget they have some cheaper versions such as the 00-15m....being lefty sucks man so just keep your eyes out and keep track of the market. Very few used lefty Martins pop up so just be patient
Please, please please. Mic a Martin where it sounds like a Martin. Having spent a lot of my life working as a consultant and creating transparent sound systems, please do not place a microphone on the neck joint. It is not where the best tones come from a guitar. Literally go to any studio techniques book and you will find what I am talking about. Best places are better found near the drum area behind and above and below the bridge. Your demo is missing so much.
Yes totally agree. I got a mid range Martin recently and have done quite a bit of experimenting with mic placement etc and have found that placing the mic at the bridge position but almost facing the sound hole gets a great sound. I couldn’t really get a decent sound from this ‘12th fret’ position of the mic so not sure why there’s a lot of videos here recommending it...
You do a great job explaining / playing the various guitars of all brands. Personally , I'm a fan of all Martin & the new Guild USA made guitars . Also became a fan of the Taylor GS Mini 's ....especially the Walnut & KOA. We have the GS MINI Koa & Martin Dred Jr. that I just LOVE. Has great sound, volume and not too big (for me). The Guild M20 E is a personal favorite. :-)

You know I thought that nazerith pa. Would be better just by experience alone. But I just bought a new Martin up here in Canada and I think it kinda went the other way because my mexican guitar just rang over the others. Then I found out it's origin and it's here with me now... later.
The stratobond necks are really pretty good. Very solid/rock hard. Don't think the neck could ever warp or break. Strings seems to stay in tune better also. Climate change doesn't seem to bother it. Sure, all wood on any guitar I think sounds much better. However, wouldn't want to take a very expensive guitar to the beach or play bars with the chance of having a drunk fall on it or spill drinks on it. So , here's where the Mexican made guitars come in ( very nice , sound nice, & built like a tank) Same with Taylor GS Mini. Solid nice looking/sounding professional guitars that are gig /beach/bar ready . :-) Different tools for different jobs.
Bought my son the Taylor GS mini. It is an amazing guitar and well worth the $500 you pay for it. The Martin Mini was oddly dry and didn't hold a candle in the same price range.
I have 3 Martins X series, road series, & US made. My road series sapele 000 from mexico has better playability than my US DC Enhanced Performance ovangkol after set up. How can this happen.
6:44 - Martin DX1AE (Mexican) 20:55 OM-18 E
9:40 - DRS 1 ( ROAD SERIES/Mexican) 23:12 - 00-28

Got myself a D JR-10 and couldnt be happier. Sounds great and super easy to play without any fatigue. Was gonna go with an X series but opted for the solid wood jr.
Exactly what I was looking for. Comprehensive and so well presented like the pro u r. Thnx
Hey at least you can go to music villa now!
I'd love to own a Martin but my 80'S Yamaha FG -430 with the right strings sounds amazing.
That's a good guitar! What strings do you use for it?!
Hey Kevin, I'd also like to know the strings you are using.
So would I
Good job buddy. I'm in the hunt for an acoustic guitar. You are a big help.
If you’re on a budget, try Yamaha acoustics. They’re good guitars
@@ramencurry6672 Already have a Yamaha. Good guitar. But I was successful in my guitar safari. Bought a Martin G-42 which has marijuana artwork painted on the front.
@@Jaden48108 Wow. That’s awesome. I need to get that artwork
Chris, you do a great job on all your vids, I think this one is the very best so far!
We own a 1957 Martin D28 and a 1978 Martin D35. Would not ever play any other. Love them!!!
Forget your vintage Martins. A D-28 and D-35 wth is that? I’m only familiar with these random models. Great Martin buyers guide.
No fenders have been harmed in the process of making this video. :-D

That's cuz Fender acoustics can't compete....🎶🎵🎶

The guitars you’d be looking for in this category are the E1, E2 and E3 by Eastman. Excellent all solid wood guitars, available in OM and dreadnaught bodies.
Just bought a martin D-18e. Love it
I have a 1958 0-18 which never goes out of tune.
Appreciate you watching our videos! Try watching this one! You might wanna call our store if you're not sure on a set (:

@@AlamoMusic I watched this, but my question is about string replacement. I have my 018 and it is just the right size for my small hands. I need to know what brand or type of strings you recommend. As I said, I want to feature my voice over the guitar so I was using Silk/steel, but I have to change them quite often. I use my
guitar at least once a week to teach and perform. Thanks
Try a set of these (low tension). Read about their philosophy. Very interesting. I’ve had a set of ‘lows’ on my Martin 00016c since mid Dec ‘20 and they still sound good.

Let me know if I can help - Chris McKee
Hands down the best guitar I've ever played is a 1943 Martin Truly made a lasting impression
So true. If you’re going to invest buy something that’ll hold it’s value or even increase..!
I have an old Taylor 110 that I have compared to many many models of Taylor. The only one that had as lovely a tone was one of their top of the line concert models priced at many times more than the 110. So you can't always go by price or model. Let your ears do the buying and your fingers choose the most playability for your pocket.
Amen brother
Comparison starts at 2:31
4:22 is where music starts
I bought my American made Martin D1R in 1994. I was 18. It was my first guitar I never regretted it. Not once. Nothing beats a Martin.
Just got my 000-17 in Black Smoke!! Perfect for my style....a little bit of strum and finger picking.

Thanks for the demo but dude you need to economize the verbiage.
I have a 1988 Martin Shenandoah 12-string. it is quite nice.., and kept in amazing condition.
I just bought a new 000 12E Koa and I am very very very happy with it. It goes along nicely with my higher Martins !
Love Koa!
@@AlamoMusic It sure is nice.
Best strings for a Martin DX1 ?
✌
Cheers!
Love these types of vids!!! Great playing and great presentation!!!! I love these
You Guys gotta hurry and get the (now)limited Martin Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar $899.oo I got one six months ago. It's their real mcCoy dreadnought solid mahogany
It's my main player now. I put solid brass push pins and a TUSQ saddle in the bridge. That's the formula for the best guitar I've ever played. THey are made in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.
That's a good guitar!
And definitely looking for a martin- US made
Can you try and explain what Bubinga is similar to ? I’ve only seen one other guitar with it as a tone wood on the back and sides.
Question? Ever heard of a EMP1 Martin? Basically was an employee crafted guitar by Martin
I now have a d35 reimagined and a d45 reimagined, what a difference 6 months make
Now I'm really confused.
Breedlove is my favorite! I have an overseas and American built, and both are out of this world!
I miss my booming cannon on my previous DCPA4, this was a something else
And which models will stand test of time as an heirloom? Only the standard series? How does the GPCPA1 compare to the GCOA2 compared to the GPCPA 3 or newer GPCPA4? How does the Rosewood back and sides sound versus the Mahogany equivalent versus the new Sapele bodies on same guitar? Thanks! And I hear the new analogue electronics are different from the original Fishman Aura? Any thoughts?
I am underwhelmed by the custom, but love the 00-28.
Hey you can get a Taylor 114ce with a case(heavy bag), a pick up, and built in Mexico for $750. I just bought one for that price. Not trying to be argumentative just throwing that out there. That being said Martin's sound is different than Taylor's.
The 114ce has laminate back and sides. The value he is talking about is in regards to complete solid wood construction.
Ahhh ok I hear ya. The Taylor is a layered back and sides, like you said.
Is there dx series that is all solid wood?
What was the chords you were playing up the neck
Great video, guy loves his guitars
Great job... insightful juxtaposition...pleAse do one with Gibson G45 vs Taylor 110....
VERY helpful, thanks! You never mentioned the Retro series. Annoying ambient noise in background.
I wish my only issue was which one to choose.
Hey Chris found out that those transacoustic batteries only last up to ten hours depending on effect level. I was reading what people were saying about the battery life. Thought you might want to know. I can't keep batteries in pedals already. Oh well
You are right! There is a guitar for me in Martin's lineup - the HD-45...
Just need a VC now...
Please if i would to get one.. Wich one i choose
Why no love for the little Martin lx1 series? 😔 btw I'm praying you guys are ok in Texas. I was born and raised there. I now live in florida. Pray for us in florida because hurricane Irma is hitting us tonight 🙏
If I was living in the US, I would order from you guys for sure. I have a feeling my next guitar will be that D28.
You left out the most important Martin guitar - the D45. Enjoyed your review though Thanks.
Peter Grindley, I have a D-45. I never saw one in the $1000-$2000 price range unless it was run over by a truck! I do love mine but paid over $5000 for it here in South Korea. Prices for Martin Guitars are higher here than in the US. That is why I am buying my next guitar, a D-28 1931 vintage reissue in the US. In Japan the prices are even higher than in Korea but even a used Martin are pristine, like mint, there.
No DM ???
what strings do you use on the Martins and do you use the same strings on Taylors if not what do you use??? thanks
Is there a reason you don't mention the materials used on the fingerboard and bridge's?
Nice review!

No doubt!
I bought an HD-28 Reimagined about 6 months ago and just ordered a 000-15m.
That probably wont be the last one either.
The x series sounds very similar to my little martin lx1 just bigger lol

love this vid thanks I havin a hard time between Tayler and martin but I do have a martin lx black that I love it plays very well and easy I just wish I could plug it n at times but its pretty loud without plug n
I have 3 Martins. The little Martin, the dreadnought Jr. and the D16GT. I like them all. I can't imagine a better sounding guitar than the D16 GT. Consider I am no musician and I could only play a few songs. I love, love the playability and tone of the Martins.
I also had a GPXAE. I didn't like it that much. I also have the Taylor GS mini Koa. I prefer the Martin dreadnought jr. I also have 3 Yamaha guitars. They sound a little too bright for me. But, I like the LL16. I am just paying off my D 16. I think the D 35 is next.
I think you need more guitars - you can never have too many! I have a 1971 Martin HD35 and I love it.
Would your recommend a DRS1 or a D-10E? I can’t seem to figure out which is better?
You need to play them both and decide which one your hands speak through best
Hi, I'm left-handed and I want to know what series you recommend me to buy since it would be my first guitar of the brand. I am used to the size of Spanish guitars
If you want something that’ll you keep and cherish for the rest of you lifetime get yourself a 000-28. If you’re on a budget they have some cheaper versions such as the 00-15m....being lefty sucks man so just keep your eyes out and keep track of the market. Very few used lefty Martins pop up so just be patient
I've been wanting a Martin for a long time, but don't know which model will sound like a Gibson j200.
Great feedback. I think his mic placement is more for his vocal intros.
There is also an over-driven distorted thump at the initial part of the guitar signal

Then I found out it's origin and it's here with me now... later.
Why D35 not got open back tuners 😭😭😭😭
The 15M Series ... Period !
What’s the value of a1914 CF Martin?
What's that song called at 6:41?
They all sound great
The stratobond necks are really pretty good.
You covered the DRS1 but where does the DRS2 fall into?
The DRS2 falls right along side the DRS1 for someone wanting that kind of value but with the brighter tone and projection of spruce. - Chris McKee
The room looks as bad as it sounds...my my not the best presentation here but I do like your videos as a whole.
I have 3 Martins X series, road series, & US made. My road series sapele 000 from mexico has better playability than my US DC Enhanced Performance ovangkol after set up. How can this happen.
