Yeah, Tesla really makes it hard to rebuild their cars, so you're probably right to pass them up.
Buttttt if it’s already rebuilt it might not be a bad idea because someone else has already done the majority of the work.
But if that person that rebuilt it did a poor repair, now you have an auction car with a poor repair on top of it.
@@Freedom_is_better_than_safety sure but if it was good enough to pass structural safety it can’t be TOO bad
@@FutureKLX300SMownerthat mindset is a nice way to die in a lithium fire lmao
I disagree because if it is fine, he could definitely get an inspection to make sure it is good to go and then he can get it if he wants or people can get it. I don’t think it’s a terrible risk as long as you get inspected if you feel like you need to.
The energy logs won't show you any issues, I'm not 100% sure exactly how but I know Tesla has added a way to enter service mode so you could get full reports.
Yeah just scroll down to the bottom of the screen hold on the Vin enter " service " It shows literally every single error
You can pay to get a full report from tesla "IF" they decide to give it to you and then you'll pay through the nose for it.
you can also go to almost any garage and pay 1k usd or so to get the printout from them unless that's changed.

@@luistorres6730no click the little car on the bottom scroll to software click and hold the model it’ll say Model 3 or x then type service, it only shows a certain amount of alerts but they don’t mean anything unless you understand them
Touch and hold the name of the model in the "service" settings and a prompt box will show up. Type in service, and you'll be give a detailed menu where many stats and options will be available to you such as battery health.
Mechanically they’re actually pretty simple, and not a lot goes wrong with them. My major concern is the risk Tesla might have blocked it from the supercharger network for safety reasons. A Tesla you can’t fast charge would be worth a whole lot less.
If Tesla find out that a car is salvaged they have a nasty habit of banning it from Supercharging and won't support it. Rich Rebuilds went into that issue in- depth a while back
Thats so stupid. Here’s your punishment for buying our car used 😂
You can have them reactivate it but they will inspect the electrical system first. You can still use 3rd party lvl3 chargers.

The main reason why Teslas are usually towards the edge or the end of an auction yard or even at the edge of a junkyard, is that if the battery fails and catches on fire, then the people won’t have to worry about the surrounding gas cars catching on fire as well. I’m kind of surprised that the Tesla cars themselves don’t have a little more distance between each other, unless they’re deemed “safe-enough.”
good point
they expected it to burn together? 😅
It's a complete myth - petrol and diesel cars are 20 times plus more likely to catch on fire (fact not fiction) - and no they don't burn with the force of 10,000 suns for a million years,
Well, gas cars catch fire 55 times per million miles vs 5 times per million miles with Teslas. That means gas cars catch fire 11x as often as Teslas. The problem is that if the Tesla catches fire, you can’t put the fire out.
@@isakhammer5428 And gas cars don't catch on fire when sitting in a lot.
This was a very good looking Tesla. It almost scares me more when it's not obvious why it's at an auction.😂 They are very popular around here, but I don't think I would buy one this way. Maybe they aren't too bad to work on?.. Would be curious to hear what you guys think! 🚘

We need to talk to rich rebuilds 😁

How much the red one coast
Rebuilt means no warranty for anything from Tesla, no means of servicing it at Tesla, and no OTA updates, no parts you can buy to replace with valid VIN, no supercharging on the network. I would say No to this one.
If you don't know Tesla's, it's probably better to steer clear.
That said, just parting them out can be very lucrative. People pay good money for battery (modules) and drive units.
Just wanted to say I love your videos. So much better than any other UA-camr honestly. No bs just straight quality content. Keep it up bro!!🤙
made my day - thank you 🤝
Very nice car but it just screams red flags with rebuilt and sitting in an auction lot after that. Definitely steer clear.
If it has a reserve on it the reason it may have been sitting a long time is because it’s not making the reserve
It’s a Tesla. Better buy then a gas car that has million moving parts that could break at anytime.
@@double_joseph327 Electrical issues in modern electric vehicles can be much harder to nail down and properly diagnose than mechanical problems. Teslas from the factory tend to not have problems like that, but a rebuilt auction car? I wouldn't risk it.
EVs have less parts to break, but when parts do break it’s a lot harder to find them as cheaply as ICE parts. I wouldn’t say one is necessarily batter or worse than the other but it is different.

Always check battery health. Go into service mode and see diags and warnings.
If they weren’t so hard to fix, I would definitely get it bc that’s
Low key my dream car.
You can look up the original auction photos when it was damaged and see how bad it was and if you’d take a chance on the repairs. We just bought a civic for our kids that was totaled, but it only had damage to the front left fender/bumper. Even the Honda manager had no idea why it would be totaled (it was during the pandemic). And lots of cars get totaled just for body damage now (not just Teslas). I’d definitely take a chance on a salvage with minimal damage again. The only thing wrong with ours is a shoddy paint job.
Tesla disables supercharging and software updates when cars are totalled. They also don't offer any replacement parts or diagnostics tools to customers. It's a shame because these are actually easy cars to fix and rebuild.
Wow, throw away strategy, thats great

@@josecamara9517nah EVs are great for the planet wdym!! /s
They’d be great for the environment if that was the idea behind making them :/
@duckshoe398 Total bullshit... unlike other manufacturers, Tesla's service centers are direct from tesla; they have no interest in profiting from service, especially when they are experiencing 50% growth per year in new car sales(Basic economic knowledge )With other manufacturers, the service centers are independent businesses that must manage their own finances. That's the reason why there have been many dealer scandals in the past.
@duckshoe3985 I meant in terms of how they're assembled mechanically. At least in the model s it is pretty easy to tear the whole car apart. The entire rear drivetrain is on a subframe that bolts in so if the motor ever did somehow die it's not hard to service. As vehicle it's great but as a platform it sucks without replacement parts or diagnostics available for 3rd parties.
@@josecamara9517And yet there are still people out there who think Elon's a good guy who wants to save the planet. 😂
If you want to get an idea what an EV would have in store for you, getting a Camry Hybrid from like 2007-2014.5 is a great route. They're like training wheels for EV's. Super easy to work on.
Ive seen some youtubers having to fight tesla for weeks trying to turn on some features back on. They disable fast charging on salvage cars, for example.
It’s interesting that they’re stacking up like that. We can longer buy teslas at our Honda dealership in Austin because they sit and also Their value.
Rebuilt Teslas with a salvage on their title can have supercharging disabled on the Tesla end. They may reenable it after inspection that cost some money. That was the situation a couple of years ago.
The only Tesla I would ever buy is that diesel swapped one 😂
Or the ls swapped

@@altonkimbrough2582 exactly
I wouldn't even mind if they just slap a honda engine there too. Wouldn't be mad if its a hybrid either.
Without the benefits of the electric drivetrain, why would you want a poorly built and not all that great looking Tesla?
It’s sad to see those tesla that are fixable and still drive get totaled only bc the door or the trunk 😢 I want one ❤
If the fender liner is missing clips, than other parts that have also been touched are more than likely missing nuts or bolts as well. To me that car would be too risky but idk
Its cool to see yoi check out a tesla. I dont understand why people hate them so much they are honestly nice in my opinion
I wonder if supercharging would be disabled, but then again if all other chargers get NACS plug rebuilt Teslas will be far more worth it in the future.
If some of the electrical wiring breaks or had problems good luck diagnosing it and fixing it yourself. I’m sure the tesla team would be happy to fix it for $10,000 though
As someone who owns a salvaged model 3, I recommend you call Tesla and give them the VIN and check to see if supercharging is active.
Tesla will deactiveate lvl3 charging on their cars that have been totaled. You can have them inspect the electrical system so it can be reactivated. You can still do lvl1/2 charging and 3rd party lvl3 chargers
If the battery pack is undamaged it might be a decent buy. To save costs Tesla integrates the pack into the body. So in a collision if the pack is damaged insurer's typically total the car as replacement and removal costs are prohibitive. If the car was in a good just run away.
the wheel arch is the bonnet open catch location for when power drains and cannot be opened, James may was saying its stupid as it took him an hour to open the bonnet
See if any of the Teslas have Teslacam or Sentry Mode recordings. That could tell you EXACTLY what happened through its own built in dashcams.
Fun Fact - Most Teslas will either be "Totaled" or if they are lucky, will get a " Rebuilt " title and this can be for a simple fender bender.
These cars are brutally expensive when it comes to body work.
It's not just body work, it is also insurer attitudes towards EVs. This is partly why Tesla got into insurance.
It’s because the cost of repair is so expensive. Someone hit my model 3 while they were pulling out of a parking spot and thought it was minor. Because it hit the rear bumper and the quarter panel, the repair bill was $28k from the local certified Tesla repaie facility (a bmw collision shop). Car was almost considered totaled while the damage was minor and drivable in my opinion.
Was the quote organized through insurance? There is a racket between insurance companies and their network body shops. Same work quoted outside an insurance claim can be cheaper.
Someone who knows how to work on the batteries and the motors would be the ideal candidates to buy these. I worked on industrial electric motors so I would love to buy one or two and piece together a working project car. Def not to sell though. In the future, working on these things will be more common and they will sell more at auctions. It's just a new thing right now.
My friend that chart don't show anything if you scroll down on the screen software hold on the Vin type in service it would show you weeks worth of issues I think teslas would be the best cars to buy since you can literally check every little thing that has happened not only that but you can run battery test
Listen. Put car in service mode by clicking device and holding down on screen on your car model then you’ll be prompted by another screen asking for password type service
Check all the errors
I believe the main reason to stay away from rebuilt title Tesla is that supercharging might be disabled by Tesla. Which means you cannot use supercharger network
That sounds borderline illegal to me, but also very Elon, so I'm not at all surprised.
U need to be careful with a rebuilt Tesla. Tesla has a database of all its cars, and a car has to be authorized to use the Supercharger network in said database or nothing will happen when you plug into one. They tend to remove them when someone other than Tesla rebuilds a car. You can still L1 or L2 charge, but not super. Of course you can get a CCS adapter and line up at the broken chargers with the other brands.
Only if the HV pack is tampered with. Which makes sense. You don't want someone who doesn't know what they're doing to expose themselves to 400V
Pretty reasonable when you consider how much power is going through those superchargers. They need to make sure that some random car doesn’t suddenly detonate cause the HV system was partially repaired and the only reasonable way for them to know is if they look at it themselves.
@duckshoe3985 that situation doesn't't seem to be changing anytime soon so better learn to live with it lol
Personally not a tesla guy but it is a nice car
Enter the service mode to run diagnostics and battery test if you can.
I'm an EV driver and I would steer clear of rebuilt titled EVs. That said, if feel comfortable selling EVs, then you should learn about them and check them out at auctions. Remember, you can sell a 2 year old used EV for under $25k and the buyer get a $4000 federal EV tax credit. Kinda nice selling point.
Ive seen a ton of your shorts and have yet to see you bid on a single car
There is a service that examines the battery pack and rates it, sorry I don't recall the name. Other than the battery, the major problem Teslas have is the coolant seals on the motors on cars from before 2016. Teslas do in fact have motors. Gasoline cars are powered by engines, despite what every red neck you've ever met tries to tell you.
Other than the battery pack and motor seals, there's not much else to go wrong.
There's gotta be a way to test the battery. If the battery can still hold a charge then you're in business.
yeah it is a difficult one, myself if I could, I would buy the batteries because they will come in useful
sometimes insurance companies are writing off the whole cost of the car if the cost to repair bodywork is too expensive, even though the mechanicals/electrics are just fine. Sometimes a few are skiddish about trying to prove/disprove the roadworthyness of a battery pack after a small collision, this then causes them a risk headache so they just pan the whole car. Apparently manufacturers wont play ball on re-certification procedures citing "commercial sensitivity". Sad really.
I’d love to take those wheels and put them on my 07 GS350

Tesla could small charge a fee to access all the data to each potential buyer.
You could know everything about the life in the battery, repairs and even how hard it was driven.
Run OBD scanner and service toolbox on it.
LOL, funny.
Tesla has the highest in resale value of all EV's. And you can mod these like crazy. Loook it up.😊
Tesla has practically outlawed servicing your own vehicle. There have a been a few different youtubers that have tried to restore wrecked teslas and Tesla themselves fight against them doing so.
I think one of the reasons teslas sit is because Tesla themselves disable fast charging on the cars making them worthless.
Not unless the HV pack is tampered with by a non-authorized shop

That's a nightmare I had a rebuilt title not worth it man I had issues with it charging my car it was a nightmare never again

Most of the time researching the vin will pull up pictures of the prior damage.
The biggest problem is the aluminum fenders wrap around the whole car so a single fender bender could cost 1000s to fix.
They aren’t hard to rebuild from the hands on perspective, they are just really expensive to rebuild which is why they get totaled. Unless you get into damaging the models where the battery compartment is a structural part then it’s done. But if this one was a simple front end collision and insurance just totaled it on cost then you may have a good car for cheap.
Like the fact that dude is honest about his knowledge of electric cars and points out the fact that those cars tend to build up for some reason. Possibly because most folks are comfortable with working on a combustion engine and not so much electric motors. Just a thought
Well the thing is that you probably won’t even have to touch any part of the motor . The damage to the other EV’s looks cosmetic. Anyways, there is still way less risk to buying any EV. They aren’t as complex as you think
I don't know the first thing about EVs and I won't pretend like I do. However if it was something simple as cosmetic and the cars aren't made of carbon fiber then why is it that these cars seem to stack up/add up on auction lots as the content creator suggests? I don't know obviously but I think it would be much simpler and cheaper to replace damaged panels on these EVs rather then working on the battery packs, drivetran, electrical problems, or the electric motor.
@@israelduncan4341 afaik the core of the problem are the licensed body shops who have found a convenient way to rip off the insurance companies and their customers.
There is no competiton amongst the body shops yet
If a Tesla is rebuilt but not inspected by Tesla, the 12000 superchargers in North America are not available to them.
As long as the battery and motor is good, there’s not a awful lot else that can be wrong with them, as the structural supports mostly unbolt and are bonded and the panels are either bolted or bonded. Even if stuff like the subframe is bent you can get replacement for like £500.
If it’s a single motor model and has been smashed at the front there’s not an awful lot there other than empty space and the cooling pump for the battery pack. The expensive bits are under the car.
I have heard of Insurance companies taking the batteries out of them for when they need to fix another car
It doesn't matter how well it was repaired, if it was repaired by a 3rd party the Tesla is locked out of using the Supercharger Network and also Tesla will disable the circuit that allows for fast charging anywhere else.
This limits you to using wall chargers only.
Lol mentioning the plastic fasteners, YEAH SUPER IMPORTANT
Might be a clue about the fenders or bumper coming off at one point. Just common sense if you’re inspecting a car. The actual plastic fasteners are a non issue, it’s the potential tampering with the vehicle that’s important here.
The apprehension comes from Tesla wanting to control their market like Apple does. This is why Right to Repair is so important. It will allow non-Tesla personnel to have access to the tools and resources to not have to depend on Tesla’s judgement to fix or not fix a car.
Always wondered about the valuation on rebuilt titles. A used lot use to have high end brands for about 50% of blue book value. Wanted to buy one, but was reluctant without a lot of research on resalability.
Probably challenging to rebuild Tesla's at this time. I never like the model 3 design looks.. like a dang fish. The model S looks like a great design thou
Has a higher chance of catching on fire from any slight damages to the battery cell. So you would park one in your garage....
There are so many electrical components, sensors, cameras, that it would be almost impossible to rebuild to 100%. If you do buy used you have to buy from Tesla. The used cars by Tesla are all under warranty and have an extra battery life warranty as well which is huge for the buyer. So you get a warranty for the car and a warranty for the battery.
Branded Teslas don’t get supercharging…..you can have a service center inspect, but that’s not guaranteed (and the independent dealers that buy this aren’t worried….that’s the new owners problem)
The issues with rebuilt teslas is charging on the road. There is a good chance Tesla removed the car from their approved list to charge at the super chargers. So it would only be good as a daily home charging car since rebuilt titles won’t get approved for supercharging.
Won't be able to use superchargers with a rebuilt title, which is a significant part of Tesla ownership.
They're probably piling up because the insurance companies look at the cost of repairing them, and deem it cheaper to total them out rather than repair since Tesla won't allow a common shop nor person to servuce them
That could be a STEAL if others at the auction, are scared to touch EV’s
It won't be. Even wrecked you are looking at $30-$90 thousand. Ive seen a couple Plaid's with serious damage go for north of that number.
if the bodyshops don't want to buy it than is it a good buy?
not only that tesla is the disney of cars that does not let you have an opinion thats bad or fix them. its absurdly expensive to do so too
Check the health of the battery 🔋

My dad owns model y performance and he really likes his and also my dad previously had a Audi s3 and I guess he really wanted a Tesla 🤷♂️

I like Teslas, but there have been so many floods all over the country (world) the salvage title may be due to water damage. I had 2 cars damaged by floods. One never had any problems nor indications. The other was older and the water affected the adhesives and some electronic modules. Ya’ never know
the problem is that its a revolutionary 2-piece cast aluminum frame. Gotta retemper it to ensure it's safe, which would involve stripping every single part off and putting the frame section(s) in a tempering oven for almost a whole day.
A business would be wise to start a "certified pre-owned" Tesla business plan. Maybe a pre existing used car retailer like CarMax.
I like ur voice NGL
The batteries are pure gold for EV swappers. Drive trains are good too. If I could get one that's rolled over making it useless other than parts and cheaper, but everything still functions I would love to swap it into a classic car.
Insurance companies frequently total electric cars because of battery costs. They'll assume a battery is damaged and total it.
Hm not a fan of Tesla’s but still interesting
Can you go through all the Tesla and look at the dash cam to see what happened
Also rebuilt titles disable supercharging
Insurance companies wont repair Tesla's. Much easier to Total out and write a check.
Where I'm from you have to be rich to own a Tesla that's probably 200 thousand dollars here in Barbados
Google the VIN. The original auction pictures should pop up with the damage.
in my state, no insurer will write a policy for a vehicle with a salvage title
Maybe the cameras will show what happened
I’m not sure if you know or not, but can you tell us the price on these cars? It would actually help form a clearer picture on how much the car is worth.
Due to the nature of those batteries, a simple fender bender can cause the car to become a total write off. They are designed to be disposable.
I've always wanted to buy a salvage Tesla to use as a parts car or fix up BUT they always seem to go for completely unjustifiable prices.
Just ignore the scum line that is 12 inches up on the door panels. 😂
Never get an electric car at auction the biggest concern would be with the batteries, the cost for them ranges between 5k and 20k, for the model S it's 13k to 20k.
And if you're thinking about using the supercharged network you can forget, salvaged telsa's have been blacklisted from using them, it used to be when you bought a telsa from salvage or auction once it's passed inspection you could use the supercharged network.
There's other factor is will the car operate properly, for anyone with a non self driving car it's not much of a problem but for a self driving EV I'd be slightly worried when you decide to slap on auto pilot and I'd also be slightly worried about another programing aswell.
Yes please 😢
Replacement part supply chains and training of technicians just isn't up to par yet.
High Risk. The battery may still have issues even when somebody fixed it.
Everything is high risk at an auction if you don't know what you're doing.
