I really love that you are so open about your life and are willing to take the time out of your day to educate us viewers. Keep up the great work and I can't wait for more!!
It's not your BMW that makes you cool. It's your whole personality. Your relaxed and childish approach to a lot of things in life. Of course, the cool car helps a little too.. :)
FrankTheCat If you want to get paid well by a company, managing people is really your only option. You can be the best IT admin, sysadmin, help desk tech, and software dev, but your manager will nearly always make more money than you, and his manager more than him.
Kyle Cronin The IT department where I work is made up of myself and one other guy. We both do whatever necessary (except for phones; we contract that out) to keep things running. Our manager is primarily ourselves, and secondarily the head of the fiscal department. This is what you get when you work for a weird non-profit company.
Kyle Cronin Fuck managing people, especially IT people - been there, done that, nearly went insane. People are batshit crazy and they try and put their batshit crazy on you because you are their manager. Now I'm back to programming 8-5 and contract on the side after hours - earn more money, hours about the same (because middle management in IT is always expected to work major overtime for no rewards), much less batshit crazy.
How did you get into this line of work? What is your educational background? What did you originally want to do for a job? How long did it get you to get to that stage? What would be your dream job?
Sam Corson It's not that complicated, like any vocation, it just involves work and some dedication. If you have a passion for computers and coding or networking, go get a computer science deg. in 4 short years, then get one of the many jobs available in IT and put in time, working your way up the ladder. If you want to get into mgmt., like Nick, you need people skills, e.g., a personality, a sense of humor and lots of diplomacy. Introverted, basement dweller, stained T-shirt wearing, computer nerds need not apply.
I've been in IT for nearly 20 years (currently a Sr. UNIX IAM Security Engineer/Developer) and I think you could quite possibly the coolest IT Director I've ever heard of. Reminds me of back when I worked at Priceline.com WebHouse Club - now that was a fun place to work at. Where I work now (next door over in RI - but I work remote and am in SoCal for the time being), most of the senior and executive management types are, umm........a lot "less fun", to put it mildly.
Thanks for sharing. I use to have a vintage computer collection as well, but on the IBM side instead. The IT department where I work are a bunch of gear heads too. The IT Director has like 15 cars and mods the hell out of them. For their team building days they go out into the woods and shoot guns (sometimes at computer hardware). They definitely have fun.
I loved the stamps, usb thingy, and that sound maker! I still have my Franklin Ace 1000 from grade school (35 years ago), also a II+, IIe, and a IIc!! DOT matrix printers and all, wohoo!! I used my 'Dan Patcher' a LOT. Also used the paper punch to notch the floppies in order to utilize the back side, DDDS :)
Great office and view. Really liked the map. We had one that started from the north pole looking downwards towards Canada and each time someone saw it, they wondered what the hell were they looking at.
First IT job I had 15 years ago - I now work in server infrastructure - was at a smaller company and the tickets can certainly be hilarious. Never got the toilet one, but people used to call and say that they locked themselves out of their file cabinets. "What should I do??" Um, call facilities? Also got the stealing wireless ones later when that was more common. "I can't connect to wireless!" Can you restart the router, please? "No, it's my neighbor's." Ok, then.
You read my mind...i just asked if you wouldn't mind sharing what you do. it is ironic as i am in the IT field as well and i have two offers as i had taken a break from the field for a bit. I love those comments, i have had people ask why their internet is not working ...during a power outage in their area.....ah yeah, no internet for you so i feel your pain
I like your collection of office toys. It just shows that you need a good sense of humor to stay in this kind of job for much time. Your office looks like it could have been a small classroom at one time. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Buddy, I see this is a slightly older video, but I'm fairly new to your channel & I'm working my way thru all your videos. I wanted to say your more down to earth then I thought & you seem like a GIANT jokester, when it's appropriate of course. You didn't mention anything about the motorcycle pic behind your desk, do you own a bike?? Sorry if you have answered that or if you have a vid about it, I'm still working my way thru your vids. I can honestly say, every time I watch a video of yours I learn atleast one new thing per vid(I believe I have watched nine videos thus far, mostly helo vids) & in this video I learned about the maps being centered, that's vary interesting. You must truly be the head boss at your day time job because anyone with two laptops, a desk top & then a large enough office for a desk, large conference/meeting table, yet the MOST importantly is you have several large windows in your office.....you have to be the Boss, lol. Another cool video my friend, I'm just curious Nick....what part of the country do you live in??
Bill I live in Connecticut and no I don't have a bike any more, the bike pictured was my ZZR1200 that I sold 2 years ago, I have been riding all my life but it is just not that enjoyable here is the Northeast, it is either too cold or too hot and old white guys like me normally ride Harleys around here for some reason so I had no biker friends to hang with.
Nick Murray OK, I understand what your saying completely, I live only a few states south of you(in the NE) & I use to ride as well, so I know what it is like for you in the North East & trying to ride. I also now understand why in some of your helo vids, you speak frequently about speed & handling, such as you did with the 520 Notar(I believe that was the proper name of that helicopter, which by the way I learned so much about the Notar system thru watching your vids). Seeing you had a 1200 bike & your nice speedy BMW, you have grown to like, appreciate & respect speed/handling in or on anything.....bike, car, helo or plane & that's so awesome!!! Thank You for your speedy & detailed answer, it is truly appreciated. Two thumbs up. :)
+nickmurray I noticed the FOTC poster on your office door and then realized your office is a reasonable example of their managers lol. desk position and all. your accent completes it.. I like your vids keep it up
Can I have two more linux boxes for our new TuNa Geo (TG) 3.0 services? It is noticed that there's a huge increase in volume of requests from clients since the upgrade. We can eventually charge more on those clients that sends extensive requests!
This was a great idea for a video. Your channel is one of the more interesting ones I've come across. Always look forward to your uploads. In part because of the wide variety of content but also because you have a funny sense of humor. Spot on!
Just found your channel, and this video, I am actually 21 years old and just about to graduate school with my information technology degree. this is so inspiring. Love the channel man
This is awesome! I just got out of school with a computer science degree, and work at a very large tech company doing software support, such as digging through program logs looking for errors, and writing patches and hotfixes . This is great, maybe I can work my way up and get an M car soon too! My brz will suffice for now, though. Love your videos, thanks for taking the time to make them.
Haha nick ! Well I'm no director but. Manager of non exempts- in a large company with IT department - the iPhone request and home wifi ticket had me rolling !!! Cheers !! God bless
I have no idea why i'm subscribed to your channel, i'm not even that into cars, let alone cars i can never buy. I originally subscribed after watching the video you made about your faulty Porsche (was it Porsche?), which was posted on Reddit, and I've watched most of your videos since. I guess i just like you, you're a cool guy, Nick.
You're awesome Nick. Very cool and unique personality you have. I work as an engineer for a car company and can't say that my cubicle looks as cool as your office! And compared to you, everybody else in our department (managers included) are mainly just ultra boring American office workers who can't stop talking about mowing their lawn, what their wives made them for lunch, and how great their minivans are. Nice to see that at your age and in your position, you haven't forgotten how to get enjoyment out of life and just continue doing what you like.
What fun to see the old Apple computer. I had one of the very 1st ones. I believe it had NO floppy drives. Then I got 1 and then 2. That was living big time with the 2 drives. That was a very enjoyable and interesting time. Even started an Apple Users Group.
Robert MacCready Yes there was something magical about the birth of personal computers during that time, everything is a million times better new but it will never feel as special as it did back then.
Nice video Nick. Love the stuff in that drawer! I have a bunch of those floppy disc games (Apple Panic, Marauder etc) but no Apple to play them on. Really should buy one on Ebay.
Bahaha I love your stamps Nick! That USB dongle is a pretty hilarious idea too. You should post up some of your stupid IT requests every so often lol. It's cool to see the tour of your office! The old Apple computers are so cool too, those huge floppy disks bring me back to elementary school haha.
Your little drewer of "tricks" is so funny. I love how you keep work fun and interesting rather than being boring and dull. Great job and great sense of humor, haha!
Wow, those vintage Apple computers really bring back some childhood memories... Using computer without internet, and be thrilled to have a color monitor!
Cool video Nick, and I'm sure your a kick ass boss as well!! Nice to see someone who enjoys what they do and has fun doing it. I figured you were in the tech field, but I was thinking more along the lines of web developer or software engineer.
Being a network engineer that works for a global company that also specialises in logistical software and hardware I feel that we have something in common.... maybe.... ok so maybe not. :(
Hi Nick, thanks for that insight. I have always wondered what you did for a living, it was cool to see you working in the same discipline as me. I love cars (own a c63 amg) so it was good to see a fellow IT professional sharing their joy of cars. People in your position are generally my customers lol, if you ever need any uk based solutions around WAN or cloud hosting feel free to look me up. Peace.
Thanks for the office tour! Your IT emails are hilarious. I am probably guilty of sending similar requests-- easier to play dumb & get the tech guys to help :)
I think you would be a fun boss to work for. We could have business related meetings where we would spend half the time talking about cars we have owned or would like to own and drive, etc..
I really love that you are so open about your life and are willing to take the time out of your day to educate us viewers. Keep up the great work and I can't wait for more!!
Tiff Nidell Happy to share my friend
Tiff Nidell
THE Tiff Nidell???
It's not your BMW that makes you cool. It's your whole personality. Your relaxed and childish approach to a lot of things in life. Of course, the cool car helps a little too.. :)
Awesome Nick! This personal information makes the channel great!
You are totally wacked and I love it! Where did you get the "Fuck Off" stamp?
garytanaka He got it on Google. It is 25 dollars.
You are very genuine person and your UA-cam contributions are worthy to watch.
Thank you Nick, I have often wondered what you do. Enjoy your channel all the time.
At work, I'm an IT admin. and a sys admin. and help desk tech. and a software dev.
I don't get paid enough.

FrankTheCat "non-profit"
Well there you go.
Kyle Cronin Fuck managing people, especially IT people - been there, done that, nearly went insane. Now I'm back to programming 8-5 and contract on the side after hours - earn more money, hours about the same (because middle management in IT is always expected to work major overtime for no rewards), much less batshit crazy.
FrankTheCat That's typical, Me too.

Gotta love a guy who loves his job, keep up the great work Nick!
A Jovial UA-cam commenter BTW I just got to the part where you opened your desk drawer of fun, prepare yourself buddy you are the next Michael Scott.
I really think you are one of the nicest, most positive and kind people on the whole UA-cam.
Enjoy your presentations! Would think that a review by you of the Corvette will be valuable and well received.. Thanks!
I've been in IT for nearly 20 years (currently a Sr. UNIX IAM Security Engineer/Developer) and I think you could quite possibly the coolest IT Director I've ever heard of. That was great, thanks for showing us what you do. It is refreshing to see a person who enjoys his work and knows it can be a fun place too.
Great video as always there Nick. Loved the tour of the office and now I know what I need in my top drawer, those stamps!!!
Thanks. I had wondered what you did as your day job.
Nice, love the little sound machine and the stamps.
Not many people could make a vid like this interesting or funny but you, sir, just did both.
I loved the stamps, usb thingy, and that sound maker!
I still have my Franklin Ace 1000 from grade school (35 years ago), also a II+, IIe, and a IIc!! DOT matrix printers and all, wohoo!!

Wasn't the Eagle one from the old Martin Landau show Space 1999? Wow, bringing back memories from long ago.
Great video Nick. Thanx for letting us into your "office world".
First IT job I had 15 years ago - I now work in server infrastructure - was at a smaller company and the tickets can certainly be hilarious. Never got the toilet one, but people used to call and say that they locked themselves out of their file cabinets. "What should I do??" Um, call facilities?

Thanks Nick. Always curious to find out what interesting folks do for a living.
You put a smile on my face for the rest of the day!
Loved your collection of stamps, and the usb and that annoying sound gadget. Keep up the good work!
Haha! You're truly a character Nick. Keep the positivity going!
You read my mind...i just asked if you wouldn't mind sharing what you do. it is ironic as i am in the IT field as well and i have two offers as i had taken a break from the field for a bit.

Flight Of The Conchords poster on the door at work! haha nice! Love those guys. nice video!
Very dapper Nick! You might want to try some collar stays, they work wonders for the shirt collar
Sweet Flight of the Concords poster. I so wish that show would come back. Don't you have some pull?
Was waiting for a mention of the Flight of the Conchords poster. You could have done a Murray inspired office roll call.
Missed opportunities....

Wow! Thank you for sharing the company emails. Hearing those makes me feel normal again:) Someone out there feels my pain!
Being around people with good personalities and a sense of humor just makes life better 💙

That is, without doubt, the best office I've seen in a long time. You missed the Flight of the Concordes poster though. Very cool.
Nick, nice office! In Los Angeles, we can't see that much beautiful trees out of window. I hope one day I will have the similar one. :-P
Awesome vid! You have given me some top draw ideas.
Just found your channel, and this video, I am actually 21 years old and just about to graduate school with my information technology degree. this is so inspiring. Love the channel man
Thanks Devin
NICK you're SUCH A CHILL and COOL GUY!

You had my wife and I cracking up with the junk in your desk drawer. Thank you for the tour of your office!
This kiwi is the best. You're awesome Nick
Thanks for sharing Nick, enjoyed the video and learning more about what you do!
Haha nick ! Well I'm no director but. Manager of non exempts- in a large company with IT department - the iPhone request and home wifi ticket had me rolling !!!
Cheers !! God bless
Nice vid Nick. I used to be an IT service manager for Fujitsu, we’d get similar ridiculous requests.
Awesome office! where does one get that creepy sound thingy
Doctors say that if that child inside of your soul dies - that's it, you're done.

Varasalvi2 true, Nick's future is youtube star. Wonder when he'll leave that "day job". :)
Varasalvi2 Thanks buddy, nice comment.
Can you say Pitney Bowes in Stamford CT.
You didn't mention the FotC poster behind the door, one of NZ's greatest exports!
Brilliant watch Nick but you forgot about the FOTC poster!
Great vid Nick wish you all the best
Nick, as part of your job and travel, have you ever flown in the Concorde?
Like your drawer collection.
Nice! There is a little bit of Murray Hewitt going on there. I love it
Nick, I want to play the oregon trail on one of your old apple computers. That would be a blast from the past!
Nice video Nick. Love the stuff in that drawer! I have a bunch of those floppy disc games (Apple Panic, Marauder etc) but no Apple to play them on. Really should buy one on Ebay.
Where can I find all of that office stuff? Primarily the USB dongle? You look like you have a fun office!

Awesome video, Nick! And awesome job too.
Regards from Barcelona!
Thanks for sharing. Your videos are great
Space 1999, very cool. UFO, the Interceptor was my fave model ship from a bit earlier than that.
Wow, those vintage Apple computers really bring back some childhood memories... Using computer without internet, and be thrilled to have a color monitor!
Connecticut and shipping... I'd guess Pitney Bowes?
Is that an Avaya desk phone? Thumbs up!
Cool video Nick, and I'm sure your a kick ass boss as well!! Nice to see someone who enjoys what they do and has fun doing it. I figured you were in the tech field, but I was thinking more along the lines of web developer or software engineer.
Excellent video Nick, now i know that i can write you if i'm needing a new phone or i'm having any problems with my computer... Hahaha. Regards!
As an IT guy myself....I feel your pain. I enjoyed the tour of your office and the toy drawer.
I love that you have a Flight of the Conchords poster!

Nick Murray Is your office in Milford off Wheelers Farms? I used to work right down the street!

Awesome game collection, choplifter and testdrive take me back. Also, your dog is named after an antique apple mac ?
Thanks for the office tour! Your IT emails are hilarious. I am probably guilty of sending similar requests-- easier to play dumb & get the tech guys to help :)
Something tells me you have a lot of fun at work Nick
I think you would be a fun boss to work for. We could have business related meetings where we would spend half the time talking about cars we have owned or would like to own and drive, etc..
