I've been running for several years, and I can vouch that running REALLY does help with skating....not just with soft knees and ankles, but with overall speed, and especially endurance!
Totally!!
Oleg Altukhov For starting to run, I recommend using a C25K (Couch to 5k) program, which one can download onto their phone, as the program is a run/walk interval program. However, with this program, I'd recommend going for time vs distance. That is because the timing of the C25K is based upon a 10 minute mile, which may be too fast for many beginning runners. A new runner would get A lot more benefit out of running a certain time, like 5 minutes, than trying to go a half mile in that same time. That way, one also has less of a chance of getting injured.
Yes, I agree, I didn't really run until this year, and when I had a chance to skate again, I could skate really fast, and not get tired out like I would in the past.
Yep! Cardio of one form or another is really important.
watch the running/jogging. it is not recommended for those over 25. it may scar your heart and arteries. try power walking. much safer
Looks like you are flying Oleg or walking on water. Amazing. I do and did a lot of cycling and that is helping me training in the ice ring hours on end... I fund tighten my boots too much as this gives me support to learn jumps but when I train dancing I need to loosened them up quite a bit...
I love your videos. Today when i clicked on this the Bee gee's "Stayin alive" played in the back of my head.
LOL and Thanks!!!
Amazing exercise I will try it .
I hope no one laughs at me.
good instruction, but please, the best way to have your viewers hear what you have to say is to avoid using background music (aka noise) which is totally wrong to use when trying to communicate a message.
Is there a very short moment that the toepick of the skate at the back is touching the ice, for example, at 5:01?
Hi Oleg can you make videos about spins please
Will do! Here's a playlist of some two foot and one foot spins from my other channel: ua-cam.com/video/v37MIn_ahhM/v-deo.html
Since you were talking about broken down boots, could do a video about this? Like what are certain clues to look for to tell that one's boots need to be replaced? I'm pretty sure mine need to be, but they don't look that broken down from the outside. However, I am having issues with my boots coming loose, and needing to tighten them more often to get the support that I need.
Yeah, that's a good idea Janet, I will definitely do it.
Thank you so much Oleg!!! May I ask it is same (similar) as progressive/run at ice dance? If now, how different? Do you have any tip not to scratch by toe when taking off from ice?
You're most welcome!! A run and a crossover are the same thing both forwards and backwards. A forward progressive and a good run wold be the same thing. A beginner run will involve lifting the crossing foot over, instead of gliding it across, so a beginner's run looks different. Backward crossovers / runs and backward progressives are not the same thing. Here is what a backward progressive looks like: ua-cam.com/video/Z6jY5u0rpoE/v-deo.html
I don't know the name of the move when figure skaters do turning steps on their toepicks, but is there a practice training for it?
Yeah, Toe Steps, I will make a video of that exercise.
Looks so familiar 🤔
Yep! Keep working on it and see you tomorrow :-)
sorry, but running and jogging is NOT recommended for those over 25. it can scar the heart and arteries leading to a heart attack. many a runner came home after going out jogging and keeled over from a heart attack. power walking and yoga is much safer. I'm 60 and I do 40 push ups and sit ups per day and an hour of yoga. yoga is great for flexibility. be sure to to it to breaths (5 to 10 breaths per pose), and concentrate on breathing in and out deeply. why not hook up with an experienced yogi and do a program on yoga for ice skaters? btw I love your videos and I'm trying to watch all of them.
I didn't mean anything so intense as that. A jog could be anything faster than a walk. But I would agree that before one does anything physically intensive, they should talk to their doctor first. Yoga is a great thing, both for strength, flexibility, and control. I used to do yoga with a great trainer I had when I was in Illinois and have included some of his off ice exercises in my off ice videos. I am going to get back to making more off ice videos at some point, but they are not what most of my viewers want to see. Thanks!
Nope, no jogging either. After 25 stick to power walking. Walk as fast as you can without breaking into a jog. And your doctor won't tell you this, but it's all over the internet and I've heard plenty of stories about it. I've know plenty of runners in their 30s who had to stop jogging because of heart problems. They were able to catch it in time. Your doctor can't always catch heart problems. 50% of the time your first heart attack is your last. You can easily research all of this on Google. And remember, your doctor has an inherent conflict of interest in making/keeping you sick. We don't test doctors for psychopathy (yet) with a PET brain scan. It's coming, but not yet. oooh, don't get me going. But you're a good guy, so stick to that.
JoAnne Denison Wait, "your doctor won't tell you this but it's all over the internet..." Sorry I place my faith in experts, not the internet.
let me add to that. 1) these are real people who have had heart attacks or died from jogging. they do videos. direct testimony. 2) this is not the job of your local MD. you should be consulting with a medical research doctor or public health doctor (MD or PhD) Your MD is like a trial lawyer, they work in the field, but they know they are not the expert because they are busy in the thick of things. Doctors (MD's ) are supposed to keep up on medical research, but often they don't. They are bombarded by drug company and mega pharm reps who do marketing and not clinical research. A medical researcher (PhD) and those with PhD's are where you really want to go for studies. A lot of people don't know that their MD they see everyday is not an expert in the studies, rare or even fairly common conditions. A trial lawyer at least has to read cases, but it is the appellate court where you have to go to get the real case law. Trial court opinions (because the judges are too close to the case) are not to be used in pleadings or briefs. So, turns out the internet looking for actual testimony videos is a place to go, as well as medical researchers and public health doctors. These people are trained in the clinical studies and they are the "go to" the docs are supposed to be going to, but that is sadly not happening. You have to do your own forensic medical research in the US. A good website where medical researchers and public health information providers (both Phd's and MDs) is mercola.com and you can ask questions on the boards there. This problem has been discussed there numerous times. Our US health care system is not what most people think it is. Your local doctor actually has limited knowledge and limited time to study. You should therefore, be doing your own medical research on the internet and consulting with medical research and public health doctors. they specialize in reading and performing the "clinical studies" to provide the information patients need. Those studies can and should then be discussed with your local MD. I know, my mom had cancer and was supposed to be 95% dead in one month. I kept her alive just fine for another 4 years. I did my own research on the internet with both medical researchers and all natural health care providers and her treatment was a blend of the two. Her doctors (oncologists and bone doctors) were very appreciative of the work they just didn't have the time to do. So yes, the internet is the perfect place for medical research and people just have to do more of it. Or get to know or hire a medical research doctor or public health doctor
the real expert you are supposed to consult with is not your local MD. that's not his or her job. You should be consulting with a medical researcher or public health doctor (PhD or MD), they specialize in clinical and medical research studies which are posted on the internet
I don't know the name of the move when figure skaters do turning steps on their toepicks, but is there a practice training for it?
Toe-turns?
U can also do half turn steps on your blades. If u want look at the toe pick version u can check out Evgeni Plushenko, he did it
Please send the link, Peter.
Yeah, Toe Steps, I will make a video of that exercise.
Oh Rebecca, I tried, but you know when u try and search for something you seen in the past and you cant find it. I'm pretty sure it was Evgeni Plushenko at an exhibition video (bad quality recorded) skating to Tosca Fantasy, and he had a great speed when he did multiple turns while only stepping on the toe picks, and by doing that he stirred up a lot of ice in the air. Looked great! I can do the same, but only stepping flat on the blades each 180degree rapid turn. I would imagine if your skates hurt a little while skating, then stepping on your toe picks and doing those turns would hurt a lot more.
