I have an extremely wide variety of rods. I got 4 custom trolling rods my friend here in NJ makes and they are amazing. They are 30 class semi hybrid stand up/ trolling 6'6". They have a slightly longer butt then your average stand up rod for fighting in a chair by short enough to fight stand up. I got a few Penn ally which are good and I have a couple cheap Fiblink off Amazon from when I needed something that I could make work to get out there. They aren't terrible but there are little things like the reel seats are all a little crooked but it's been about 10 years now I've used them and they have held up surprisingly well for literally $60 😆. I got a 200lb bigeye on a 50 to 80 class with a tica oxean 50 with no problem and tons of giant sharks on them. I knew that they wouldn't be great but at that price if you need something that will work is not terrible

Went custom about 10 years ago. It's a great way to tailor your gear to your type and style of fishing and your boat. Plus a good custom builder will usually produce a better quality rod.

I've been thinking about trying my hand at building my own custom rod. Obviously, a custom rod from an experienced builder would be a better product, but landing a fish on a rod you built yourself would be pretty cool.

It's all about the quality of blanks and guides in that type rod. A good blank could be above $200 alone. Add on another $150-$200 plus on guides n it can add up in a hurry.
Add a fancy reel sweet in wraps and $800-$1000 is a real thing.
Not to mention the building fee.
I build all my personnel rods with the best materials and just usually do a 1 color wrap.
I'm not worried about looks I'm worried about performance.
If you have the extra $ n you will actually use the rod a lot go for it.
If you will have a rod in a holder while fighting the fish I say save $ n get the best shelf/ store rod you can get.

There are rods that aren't custom rods, but they are hand built to a limited range of specifications
I'm having 2 slow pitch jigging rods built right now. This company doesn't normally sell jigging rods, but when I explained what I was looking for, said they could build them.
I almost used a local custom builder, but he used blanks by a few of the large companies, and unless I missed something, all of the blanks were made in China. That was a deal breaker with me. BTW, the Daiwa slow pitch rods costing around $600 were Chinese made. Love the Daiwa reels, (made in Japan) but the Chinese rods are out of the question. Support American companies wherever possible.

Agree 100% with your sentiments on Chinese products. The sad thing is that no matter how diligent you are it's almost impossible to avoid all Chinese products these days.

There are two companies that I know of that make blanks, (composite and graphite) in the USA.
From what I hear, they sell complete rods, not blanks for DIY builders.
There is a video on the Gale Force Twins YT channel on the company that builds their rods. Gale Force had/has jigging rods on their website.
The second company, I'm not going to disclose until after I get my SPJ rods and use them for a month or so.
They're not cheap, but are USA made and fully customizable.
