In regards to in body stabilization, I wonder if the firmware updates since the release of the A6500 has made it worse. I've got a A6500 and since the last firmware update it seemed to me that it isn't as effective as it used to be. I wonder if there's anyway to compare an original firmware A6500 with the new A6600.

I think Sony IBIS is not terrible for video, but really it's much better for stills. If I needed a camera for video and really needed IBIS, the Sony cameras would not be my first choice. On the other hand, if I would be ok with a gimbal , then these cameras are pretty outstanding. The unlimited recording limit, great auto-focus, and battery life are just killer features for anyone who's going to be doing a lot of video shooting.

A6100: great autofocus for less money
A6400: best bang for the buck in general
A6600: great battery life for a aps mirrorless.

Can’t help but feel quite let down by this update.
They could have done quite a bit more but at just $100 less than an X-T3, it just doesn’t look nearly as appealing compared to the a6400 versus the X-T30. Not at all a bad camera, but for that price, oof.
    An a7iii with 28-75 f/2.8 or a6600 with the 16-55 f/2.8?
Z battery is real nice though. That’s probably the single biggest upgrade.

  • @j16m02
    @j16m02 5 років тому +15

Gordon, you (and every other reviewer) totally missed the most important upgrade in the A6600. The memory card slot has been rotated 90 degrees so it no longer requires tweezers to remove the card! Hallelujah! All kidding aside, this seems to be typical of Sony upgrades. Add a couple upgrades that folks have been asking for, but leave off some other easily doable upgrades (full touch implementation, colored AF reticle as per the A7RIV) and even take away a few features for no apparent reason. (in body flash and IBS on the A6400). That, and leaving a few badly needed upgrades (better VF, deeper buffer, UHS II memory card slot, joy stick) on the lab bench, ready to go but held out until the next upgrade when they will give us just enough to tempt us without putting it all on the table. Sony is not alone in this marketing scheme, they all do it but it certainly is irritating to say the least.

Gordon, thanks for this extremely detailed test, as usual.
I am a Sony APS-C user for a long time, having purchased, lately, the A6500.
I am really fed up with Sony playing around with these ridiculous ergonomic bodies, even the full frame models, A7, don’t have an ergonomic body to write home about.
I am just waiting for the Fuji X-H2, with XT-3 sensor, in body stabilization (Sony stabilization is a joke one), seriously color science, to switch and never go back.
Hopefully they will include the vari-angle monitor, applied to the new Fuji X-A7.
It will be a killer camera! Canon, Nikon, Sony, beware!
Sony has been playing around with it’s customers, for a long time, sure, with top leading phase detect auto focus, but not really truly innovative where they could. Come on, why never a vari-angle monitor? Why never a really touch functionality.
    They will pay the price.
XT-3 is already an excellent camera, just lacking the stabilization.
Why: because Fuji listen to it’s customers.

The ridiculousness of Sony's approach to small compact cameras is painfully obvious from your choice of lens to show this camera with. The lens is twice a big as the body, probably weighs twice as much and is just as expensive. So a $1400 compact camera body turns into a $3k usable camera the size of a Sony full frame kit, that is anything but small and compact. Why bother when the A7mk3 is $600 more and probably the same slightly used at KEH or Ebay.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  5 років тому +1

Actually the new 16-55mm f2.8 lens is remarkably light and felt well-balanced on the A6600, especially with its bigger grip than before - I really enjoyed shooting with them both. But as I pointed out, the combo isn't cheap and there are compelling full-frame alternative combos.

  • @chrissoclone

Feels like Sony is now borrowing Canon's cripple hammer to protect their FF lineup too. Even if they brought out those two lenses, I'd not trust them enough to be really invested into APS-C, and their APS-C line still feels like just an entry drug to get you into the full frame world, in other words, (expensive) APS-C lenses feel more like wasted money. Personally, I'd avoid them and use FF lenses, or cheaper ones, until it's time to get the FF body too, or if I'm sure APS-C is enough, stick to Fuji who might not be the leader in terms of autofocus speed etc., but don't hold back or cripple either.
And sometimes I wonder what would be if Samsung was still in the game...

    • @TechReflex
      @TechReflex 5 років тому

Fuji's autofocus speed and eye detect accuracy is pretty good, anyone interested can watch videos on my channel, I always use eye detect AFC and it has NEVER failed to keep my face in focus. I don't know what would be 'better' than this. The lens selection matters with Fuji though, as I use one of their newer and expensive lenses.

Sony is borrowing NOTHING from crippled Canon, and in fact, they passed them right by a long time ago.Canon came out in 2019,with ONE card slot,no IBIS(which they had in their own sub $500 camera in 2009),etc,etc,and had the gall to ask for $3000, as if the EOS R was a professional camera.Sony also has a full complement of A mount,E mount,G series, and third party lenses, and that also is a fact. These 5100-6600 offerings target certain demographics, yet seem strange because they have multiple models instead of narrowing things down.I do not know what this opinionated mess with Sony is,yet people just need to deal with the FACT that a consumer electronics company has passed by these so called icons of the camera world,at their own game.
I find that hilarious and sickening that such former beasts in the industry dropped the ball.Whatever Sony is doing, they are still learning, while they make PlayStation,TVs,and provide financial services.I used to shoot Sony until the camera got damaged, and my FF camera now has a Sony sensor. Now it's Sony who has led the pack in innovation, along with Fuji,Panasonic, and everyone else EXCEPT Nikon and Canon.oh,and I would not bother with APS-C glass anyway, unless it either came with the kit or was close to free.

He's not saying that Sony is borrowing any camera tech from Canon, but Canon's "cripple hammer", meaning the concept of intentionally crippling one's own products. Now I dont agree with all those models, like 5100,6000,6300,6400,6600,etc,etc,yet it gives Sony a chance to cover the bases for what everyone might want.Plus, when they do come out with their FF products they do NOT cripple them with inferior AF,crops, one card slot, etc, and no IBIS.Thus, like I said, there is no comparison, because it's two entirely different animals...next???

The lack of pop-up flash doesn't bother me one bit. In the almost twenty-years I have been shooting digital, I have only used the pop-up a vey few times. I am wedded to the Godox/Flashpoint system - either on camera or with the use of the Godox/Flashpoint trigger. I use a lot of lenses, both modern and Legacy that don't have image stabilization. The IBIS of the A6600 helps a bit.
My favorite upgrade is the Z=Battery - especially since I often shoot with the A6600 in conjunction with my A7iii; it is nice to use identical batteries with both cameras. Makes packing for trips and jobs easier.
The lack of a dual card shot doesn't bother me since I no longer shoot professionally.
I would like a 1/8000 second mechanical shutter since I often shoot outdoors wide open with fast lenses...
I like the A6600 with 28-75mm f/2.8 Tamron lens, with the 70-350mm Sony and with the 14mm f/2.8 Rokinon...

Missing in all the reviews to date is the most important statistic...which camera do actual people tend to use when they have various cameras lying around --- the large/heavy one or the lighter, more compact one?! I have a sony a6000 and love it's small size for traveling and shooting quickly. I now want to upgrade and was torn between the sony a6600 and the Sony A7III so I went to a local camera store and picked up the a7iii plus had them put on a full frame lens. The a7iii camera was SO heavy and cumbersome in my hands that it was a huge turn off. When traveling or shooting internationally or even locally a large camera-lens set up feels very intrusive. Unless you are a pro, what counts is what camera you will ACTUALLY USE, NOT what takes the best picture. I've read so many times about the expensive DSLR cameras sitting around idly because they are simply too cumbersome. THIS issue, of weight and size, -and the A7III has a HUGE weight and size issue because of the expensive, long, and thick lenses, compared to the Sony a6600, is rarely addressed adequately. Again, a REAL WORLD survey of what cameras people reach for would show (my bet) that the smaller, lighter, easier to maneuver body/lens set up wins hands down (in terms of frequency of use).

Thanks for the very complete review. I'm personally underwhelmed. The delta between going prices on Kijiji and the price of the a6600 (excluding sales tax) is about $1,000 CDN. For that, you get better focusing and a bigger battery, but you lose the onboard flash. While it's true that the onboard flash is useless for pro shooting, it comes in handy for family pix as a fill flash and I like it on the a6500. Quite simply, the a6600 is not IMHO worthy of an extra $1,000. I'm tempted to find a nice used a7III and upgrade to full-frame for roughly the same difference in price.

    • @cameralabs

It depends how good the OIS was on that particular lens. Some of them are very good, but others less so. For instance, the 16-50mm kit zoom doesn't have great OIS. I'm also finding out how the IBIS works with lenses with OIS, but when I used the 70-250mm on it which does have OIS, the stabilisation was ok but still not amazing.

Good low light performance, wide enough with decent zoom range, superb battery life, flip out screen for those who care about travel selfies/vlogging, all without the size and weight of a FF. I'm not convinced. A Sony a7 III with their 24-105 F/4 would currently be cheaper and do more. Keep in mind that not all f/2.8 apertures are equal. You have to consider crop factor => an f/2.8 lens on APS-C delivers the same results as an f/4 lens on full frame. The a7 III combo mentioned above would be about the same weight and size as the a6600 combo, but cheaper - and offer more zoom range.

Gordon, you are 99% on the a6600. Here's my take on the camera.
The way they used older tech (more on this later) and the pricing, I think Sony is making users favor the a6400. As you correctly pointed out, the advantages of the a6600 is basically the audio out, IBIS, fz-100 battery. The IBIS is basically moot as it is only useful in photos, not for video. It only will perform relatively well with a lens with OSS. And even that, a combined LIS + IBIS, sometimes, the stabilization is still not on par with its competitors. I was hoping that Sony cou;ld have at least improved on this. But I suppose that would mean, using a new sensor assy and not be in line with the rest of the new a6xxx family.
I think Sony is really after the sub U$1,000. I am not sure why you have to release an a6600 at that price. I'd say, there will be more takers at U$1,100 or U$1,200. But for it to go that price point, will take about 2 years. So, the way I see it, only few and those who really need the things listed will go for it. The a6400 is really the sweet spot. I know I'd go for that model and save myself U$500 in the process. Since IBIS is really useless in practice, the only 2 remaining features that are really important and lacking in the a6400 is the audio out, and fz100. To most, that' is not worth paying an extra U$500, unless you really want those in the camera. The loss of the pop-up flash may not be a big deal for many in the a6600.
My take on the use of older tech is - Sony will likely want that on the next round. Why do that? Well, I think it's because the A9-2 and the A7S-3 will have the next generation sensor and IBIS. To put them here now, is to tip their hand early and maybe even steal the drama/thunder of the A9-2.
I also believe that Sony, at this time, now targetting Canon's base. They've got Nikon in the past 2 years, now it's Canon. In a shrinking market, there really is no other place to grow - except if you can steal your competitor's customers. And this is why we have 3 aps-c cameras released in 1 year! And 2 aps-c lenses added. I find the 16-55 f2.8 G too expensive though. The 70-350 could use a U$150 price reduction too. Though I think this will sell well to those shooting birds, sports outdoors. There is the FE 70-300 for a few dollars more, but I think it's size and weight, plus slower AF will not be on par with the aps- c lens. I suppose if you have a 35FF sony, you would be best to go that route.
Will this strategy work? We will know in the 1st quarter report of Sony and Canon. In my opinion, it will sway many to switch, except the die hard who are brand loyal to the core. But the specs/performance is really way ahead of anything Canon has. Even if you bought the a6100, it's AF tracking is so superior that soccer mom's will have few blurred or OOF shots. In a budget, the a6100 + 55-210 is a cheap outdoor action camera for those who don't want to spend much.
What Sony has done is to keep the photo-AF,-video basically on par across the board (minus the presets in the a6100). So, you can expect the same performance across the camera models. They differ only in some areas you may want such as better body, weather sealing, audio out, IBIS, eye-focus in video, etc. That may or may not be important to some, but then again, that is Sony's strategy for differentiation, like it or not. Personally, I like that better than what Canon's basis for segmentation which is true crippling to me.
In line with these developments, I have no doubt in my mind, that Canon will announce an RF mount aps-c in the next 6 months. That goes the same for Nikon. They simply have to now. As the bleeding will continue.
But at the same time, before the year is over, Sony will likely launch the a9-2, if the rumor is right. This in effect, will target the last bastion of dominance of the duopoly. And we will likely see the next generation of sensor and processor it. And if the timing is on cue, expect to see that on the A7-4 after the 2020 Olympics. In effect, Sony is consolidating and moving the bar ever higher so the others will keep trying to catch up. Right now, the bar is the A7-3, but by the time they manage to get to that, the A7-4, with the A9-2 and A7S-3 tech will have been the next barrier to hurdle.
What of the a6xxx or aps-c line? Sadly, it will lieley be status quo till maybe 2021, where it can be upgraded again using the latest tech. Maybe, we''ll also see a shift to the fz-100 battery by then, thus solving one of the sticky points in the aps-c line. As it is, it's really only Fuji who can match up or beat Sony on this segment. But Sony is not (yet) worried as their main goal is not to match up with Fuji at this time, but to erode Canon's aps-c customer base. They want to do it now, while their RF aps-c and Nikon's Z mount aps-c are still on the drawing board. Also, since their tech is still no match to Sony, there really is no reason to release a next gen sensor. They use the same 3-5 year old tech.. Because Canikon is really about 3-5 years behind! They will deploy the latest tech once the A9-2 is released. But i think we will see those already in 2021. Not unless, Sony is also thinking of launching a new line - the A7000 series. And this will be the one to square off with the XT-3 and have 4k-60p in the aps-c family.
On the surface, these Sony moves seem weak. OTOH, these releases seem not to really address the current Sony base. This is more to woo the canon or other brand users. The a6600 and the 16-55 is overpriced IMO. But then again, I think Sony wants us more to get the a6400 and the a6100. And that plays really well to getting sticking it to the m6-2 or anything else they can come up with. As for Nikon, well, we know they are not competing at all, since by default, they don't have an aps-c MILC. DSLR sales are tumbling, hence the need for everyone to contract/consolidate the aps-c DSLR line. No more 7D-3 or in Nikon's case, likely no more D500, and many D5xxx.
In summary, this releases may seem weak or disappointing. To existing Sony users, they are. But to those at the other side of the fence, these are 5 years way better than what Canon or Nikon has now, MILC or even DSLR! So, the target market here is basically Canon and NIkon. It's not for the Sony fans. We will know if this strategy worked only at the last quarter report and 1st quarter report in 2020. For now, we just have to live with what Sony is offering. Take it or leave it. But then again, if you really look at it and get mad and furious at Sony, what other brand is there to go to? Surely not Canon's M series? Nikon doesn't have an aps-c MILC. And DSLRs are dying so to get one now may not offer upward growth. Panasonic and Olympus have no aps-c, only MFT, and that market is even questionable, not counting that MFT combined is not that many to steal customers from. It's Canon who has the biggest. So, I can only conclude that this move is to steal away customers from Canon and Nikon as the market contracts. Otherwise, why even bother with 3 x aps-c cameras in 1 year?

The Korg Triton can do anything and so does the Roland JD-XA. But the Roland has horrible presets. I think its the same with cameras. Unlimited 4K video recording with excellent quality and full-speed reliable tracking autofocus, hmm, really appealing. The E mount lens system is the superior today of any others, giving the option to upgrade to beasts like A9, A7III, A7RIV. Definitely, X-T3 is ok, but it's an esoteric X-mount world, I was there, APS-C only, a kind of dead-end. I recently visited a Tamron and Sigma showroom, and I spent there a number of long hours experimenting with their brilliant lenses specifically designed for Sony E mount. This was really eye opening, Sony, Zeiss (Loxia, Batis), Sigma, Tamron all are churning out excellent lenses. You haven't mentioned the PZ18-110OSS, which is a beast of a video lens, available only for E mount.
In this context, Fujifilm is really a tiny system, very small market. Wise people suggest to buy into a system and not into a single camera. I think you were totally right when you explained that the biggest competitor is the A7III, the king of mirrorless cameras today with its price and features. The A7III doesn't have the new tracking AF, but its photo and video AF is terrific. Who cares an esoteric Fujifilm gizmos when the A7III is here. With the most recent price drops and firmware updates even the Z6 is a severe competitor, too. It has no video eye AF, but its video AF in general is OK, Z6 has the 30-minute limited recording, but it's full frame and part of the impressive Nikon lens ecosystem.

So interesting to watch this at the dawn of an A6700 release. The leaked spec for the A6700 is only a slight improvement on a camera that felt slightly dated in 2019. Time to go and speak to the bank manager about swapping to Fuji.

I've seen so many leaks on a high-end Sony APSC which never come to fruition over the years, so I'd wait and see if anything really does happen. I hope so, but who knows?

Now 5 yrs later in 2024 the a6600’s price, especially used, is significantly lower than when it was new making it not as cost prohibitive considering its other merits. Already being an A7C owner I purchased the A6600 over the a6700, which has better spec, (especially in the Auto focus, and video departments) for my street photography habit for these reasons:
      -Price -$689 refurbished a6600 was 1/2 the price of a new A6700
-Flip up screen -wanted this specifically over the a6700’s side flip
-Custom buttons- I’m counting 6 on the a6600
-Grip - I love the a6600’s grip. It fits my hand more comfortably than the a6700
The places I kinda wish it were better:
Burst shooting - After shooting a batch of shots I can’t continue shooting again until the camera has completely finished writing all the files to the SD card.
Handheld video - IBIS is great for photos on this camera, not so much for handheld video. If you shoot on a tripod or with the camera stationary no problem. 4k is beautiful. If you want to handhold video yourself one can get smooth shots without jutter, just don’t walk around.
Touch shutter - Great feature to touch the screen and capture a photo. I wish it were quicker to snap once screen is touched.

We know they CAN do be, so now we're left wondering why they intentionally left out obvious bits that should have been put into a flagship model, like dual cards or at least a UHS-II slot, a 3:2 rear screen instead of the awkward 16:9 screen and the overall body shape which is limiting (no front dial, really?)...oh, and the aging image sensor.

I wish Sony would at least gave us a faster shutter speed 1/8000 and dual sd card slots for this model.
I'm spoiled by my Fujifilm Xt-2 and what Sony is offering is not enough for to justify the move. Otherwise, I love their AF system.

Epic FAIL from Sony. They took a6500 and renamed it a6600. Sony (and some vlogers) tried to focus on the new AF eye tracking but today (14-09-2019) FUJI announced that AF eye tracking is ready for all Fuji X-T cameras. I m owner of the 3 years old a6500. For the day it was released was the best camera. Now we need 10 bit 4K 50/60 fps, better codecs and better HD. Fuji X-T3 is by far better. If X-T3 had IBIS it would be the perfect camera for video. Sony a6600 is an old hardware camera. Only the battery is new. Don't buy it. SAVE your money. Buy Sony a6500 and save 300-400$. It is EXACTLY the same hardware, same sensor, same ibis, same codecs, even the old micro usb is the same.

Well, strictly between these two - the Sony is overpriced for a rehashed 6xxx model. Plus, in the end of 2019, one can find the Fuji used, which makes it even sweeter deal. And from personal preference - how do you shoot with a camera that has no front dial? I wouldn't :)

Thank you! Such a great review. I think the a7 iii is much better overall once you add a lens to it with the price point being so close. Also Fuji is doing so well, they tick off so much of the pragmatic boxes its hard but Fuji needs to really go back to the drawing board regarding the battery, 300 shots for one battery? dreadful.

Excellent review and I totally agree with your comments.Sony gives you something new and takes something away. This is a poor update in my view, upping the price with only a few advantages. They are giving you what the previous cameras should have had anyway.Does the screen dim on UHD shooting as previous A6500.I had the a6300 and the a6500 and now have the A7R3 but I prefer the UHD video on the A6500 quality and clarity but Photo wise I prefer the A7R3 by a long way.

I really see next to no point in upgrading from my 6300. The actual image quality has stayed exactly the same for both photo and video due to the same sensor. I don't need the bigger battery as I power my 6300 with a dummy battery + USB power bank anyways and I already have a lens with great optical stabilization (Tamron 17-70 F2.8), so IBIS is next to useless for me. Really, there's just no way for me to justify getting this thing. Had they given us a higher resolution sensor with better low light performance or higher bitrate 4K recording, I'd have considered this, but as it is... Nope.

  • @MrNYCman530

Tough to choose. Fuji has a better menu layout, control dials, and more lenses. a6600 has a better grip, better battery life, and image stabilization.
