- Many world leaders travel in motorcades escorted by police through Manhattan during the morning rush hour, surrounded by cyclists, walkers and traffic. The delegates were attending the 1st Day of the United Nations General Assembly at the UN HQ in New York City. The NYPD escorted the motorcades while the US Secret Service and Diplomatic Security Service, along with other agencies, provided protection for the VIPs.
Notice how some of the Ford Explorers with the NYPD have a new livery; it's in the same design as the flag of the New York City Police Department.

They really should've just put the UN building in like rural Alabama or something, somewhere where there's not 9 million people trying to get to work at the very same time they're trying to get so many world leaders to one place.
You can't because it's more than just the UN building itself. Think of how many people at the UN are foreigners that are constantly being shuffled in and out of the country and need access to a major international airport. Plus there are lots of consulates and other foreign government stations around the UN.

The usual traffic is made worse by the fact that they close at least one lane on all the major roads to create a special diplomat only lane (the one you see all the escorts and police cars using next to the bike lane) to get everyone where they need to go as quickly as possible bypassing the traffic as best they can.

Nice video I think they should really have officers stopping pedestrians and cyclists at the cross walk and allowing them to cross at safe moments it looks like a free for all and also close roadss completely yes it will cause congestion at other points in city but it make better ingress and egress for the UN general assembly ( it's inky for a few days at a time

The per-vehicle costs vary, presumably, on how many a department orders at one time and how much of a discount they receive, but *one* Explorer Interceptor could easily cost north of $60,000 (again, based on which type and how much equipment it will have on board).
