    Do you think the reason Emily is likeable at all is because we see the show from her POV? If we saw it from Daniels or Amanda's, for example, it would be very disturbing and we'd probably see Emily as a creepy villain and deceiver. Lil Koala one of my subscribers said this and I thought it was so true!

      Yes Emily in a way is a villain just like Victoria but I do understand why she is the way she is like with Nolan the reason she doesn't want his help is because she doesn't want anybody else dying because of her just like what does happen to Amanda her friend plus people treated her with such cruelty and abuse as a child that of course she wouldn't trust anyone 🤔🤨

      They could've definitely made daniel the MC and him becoming suspicious of her wouldve been pretty interesting to see, him then trying to find out what shes about, and then finding out about his parents crimes, and then his sister is only hos half sister, it works pretty well, since he's not as heartless as emily, wouldve rooted for him for sure.

      I haven't watched the show since it ended and I would say that Emily is a genuinely likeable person when she's not being a huge bitch to people. Like she clearly cares about the people around her she's just detached. I would say as the show goes on she become more and more unlike which is why her getting the happy ending is a bit dissatisfing.

      You know like in Kill Bill there’s a moment when the bride kills one of her enemies and she sees her (that enemy’s) daughter? She tells her she will be waiting for her when and will understand when she comes? I think Emily is a hero of her story, and we understand and sympathise with her, but of course another character would have a completely different take on her actions.

    In my opinion, the reason that Emily's happy ending feels so jarring is because it undermines the original premise of the show. In the pilot, they go out of their way to convey that this show is about revenge and that pursuing that journey does not result in happiness, and will only bring you pain. Emily is so angry and vengeful that she chooses this path despite knowing the consequences. I believe there's a quote at the beginning something like if you choose revenge, prepare two graves - one for those who wronged you and one for yourself. I think the message of the 'Revenge' was lost when the show took a turn towards becoming very much a soap opera (her dad being alive and coming back).

The way he forced his will on her, framed Jack for the Priests murder, constantly sabotaged her missions to fit his agenda, all seemed hypocritical and like he didn’t understand her at all. I felt like Emily hated Victoria so much because I think she feels guilty for hating her father while she was young. Conrad and Victoria were both responsible for setting David up, but it couldn’t have been done without Victoria. She betrayed his trust and handed over the laptop (young Amanda sees this). Victoria also took the extra steps to make sure young Amanda knew what a terrible person her father was with that therapist she had on her payroll. What Conrad and Victoria did was messed up but with Victoria it was personal. She even ruined her memory of her father for such a long time. It doesn’t seem like a significant thing to be angry about, but for someone who literally had everything stripped away from them, the memory of their loved ones can be the very thing to hold onto and to sort of keep them going and Victoria made sure of it she didn’t have that , at least that’s how I see it.

    • @rikudoubapeck
      @rikudoubapeck 3 роки тому +21

      She also went after her mother just because she knew about David and Victoria's affair. Basically Conrad and them framed David but Victoria personally made it so Amanda had little chance of recovering. She took the chance of talking to her father and mother away from her and had her locked up and poisoned her against her father and left her to be judged as the daughter of the devil.

    • @margarethmichelina5146
      @margarethmichelina5146 2 роки тому

      I think Victoria is jealous to see David and Amanda have a very good bond between father and daughter, something she never had in her entire life. Especially the fact her real father is her rapist! That's why she never tell Charlotte that her real father is David not Conrad and if you watch Season 4 when Charlotte reunited with her real dad, there's a disconnection between them unlike David did to Amanda when she was little. David didn't look happy around Charlotte and so did Charlotte who got manipulated by Victoria. The worst part is, the last time Charlotte remember, her parents were on date while she got kidnapped and none of them helping her instead she called Emily instead!
      Ironically, Victoria lose by the love of father and daughter as David shot her and saved his daughter's life. David's true love is his daughter, Amanda and Victoria's true love is herself.

    I think the character of Emily really spoke to the side of us that has been wronged, the side that only comes out when we´re in the shower thinking up all the things we should have said and done when we let other people walk all over us instead. We got to watch a revenge fantasy play out while we - in the real world- just have to live with our trauma and pain. I honestly didn´t care that Emily isn´t a good person. She spoke to my sense of injustice and I wanted to see her enemies punished. This whole show really spoke to my inner vengeful self.This self doesn´t want to be polite, doesn´t WANT to be good. It just wants to see the world burn sometimes. And that is EXACTLY what we got from Emily.

Even though she fulfilled this fantasy of thr vengeful angel we all want to be sometimes, I ended up identifying with Nolan more. He is the one being hurt by her actions just as she was hurt by people in the past. The fact she never really recognizes this parallel is a shame, it would have made her character more likable, complex and deserving of the happy ending she got.

She lied and did terrible things to him and to his family. He shot her and she can’t have kids now because of it. At the end (after the scene you talk about of them talking to each other, for the first time knowing Who they have in front of their eyes) they develop again feelings and forgive each other. They forgive Terrible things that in real life should not be forgive (like you know... attemptet murder) but in the show it would’ve fit so well! Also it could a way for both of them to come to terms with their darkness and move in from Everything.
      Even if this would’ve not happened, Daniel death is still the worst thing that happens, it’s maybe worse even then David being alive (well maybe). Like Emily developing genuine feelings for Daniel and being conflicted about the whole revenge thing would have been so interesting to explore. And it's hinted at in the first season that she actually does love Daniel to some degree and that just kind of vanished in later seasons. Like his entire personality just changed over night pretty much - like one minute he was trying to remove himself from his family and the next he was covering up the fact that they framed David Clarke. In my opinion, I think Daniel kind of broke Emily's heart when he went along with his father later on in season one, and they barely even talk about that? anyway. This show lost the plot in season 2. Like I liked Aiden but to me his love story with Emily felt kind of random? And with Jack he was just in love with some childhood version of her. Loved this video btw!

    I love Emily as a character. I can't help but root for her, and I think it's because despite the despicable things that she does, she's a very understandable character. Like, she feels like a real person and her motives always feel real and her emotions feel valid. That's why I think that whenever she "loses control", we're okay with it. We see her trying to control her own life, when she's had control taken from her so many times, and we want her to succeed. She has a hard time trusting people because she couldn't trust anyone when she was smaller. People lied to her, treated her badly, backstabbed her. It feels like her character makes sense, and so, in her POV, we we feel the same things, the defensiveness, the desperation. Even though I know she did horrible things, I know why she did them, and that's why she's such a potent main character. We're used to seeing a plain main character so that we can judge for ourselves what's fair and good and what's wrong, but she's very complex, which is why the show is so interesting. Understanding her story makes us want her to be well. I feel like her trauma makes her very relatable, and she brings to life the fantasy of every person who's been through that sort of thing alive, whereas in real life, people who've been through trauma often feel meek and small and are afraid to be rude. She's the best morally ambiguous character out there, in my opinion.

      In the beginning of Season 4, you can see she looked empty inside even Nolan asked her, "Are you sure you want to move on like this?" and very concerned about her. She deserved a lot of therapy after that especially for the ending. As much as I don't like her end up with Jack, but you gotta admit that Jack has a big patience to wait for his childhood friend to move on and get away from her problems.

      Also, fake Amanda had better relationship with Jack than the real Amanda. And Fake Amanda is a loyal friend and even tried so hard to defend Emily but Emily being a selfish bitch never appreciate her until her death which she regrets. Emily instead still hiding instead of clearing her real name just because Amanda was a stripper at the time. Emily is a terrible friend even she's always making Nolan on trouble every time and I hate how she never apologize to Nolan for the damage of what she's done.

  • @han-marie
    @han-marie 3 роки тому +52

    Emily had a tendency to fall in love and care for those she's using. For example: Nolan - she used him as a link to her father and for his computer skills but she ended up loving him as a brother. Daniel - she used him as the link to slowly destroying the Grayson name and getting to Victoria but she ended up falling in love with him. Jack - she used him to ensure he was kept out of everything but was always an arms length away yet she fell in love with him. Amanda - she used her to swap identities, manipulating her to do so and yet Emily ends up loving her as a sister right before she dies. Aiden - she actually fell in love with him first but then continued to manipulate him and use him for her Revenge mission 😅

    • @margarethmichelina5146
      @margarethmichelina5146 2 роки тому +5

      What I like about Fake Amanda is she was very loyal to Emily even though they had a rocky start in juvenile. She didn't mind to get her identity swap but too bad she made Amanda Clarke's name dirty for being a stripper as she went to the wrong way. She was even supported Emily to destroy the Graysons and honestly, she had better chemistry with Jack than Jack with real Amanda. Too bad, she never get a chance to be a mother.
      Ironically, even though she was a stripper before, she at least genuinely fall in love with one man who is Jack and way better than Victoria who slept with many men to please her and even had 3 different children with 3 different men.

    This is honestly my favorite show. It’s the only shows that I’ve rewatched several times. Just a few notes: Emily *is* an anti-hero insofar she’s the protagonist but does not possess traditionally heroic qualities. VanCamp does a great job making Emily charismatic (which makes her sadistic tendencies more acceptable to the audience). In terms of her expressing empathy, I think facial expressions (particularly her eyes) shows when she’s softening w/ Jack or Season 1 Daniel. The writers also ensure to not have Emily *directly* cause someone’s death.
    I really agree with you on the show’s treatment of Amanda. The writers went out of their way to frame her as a liability and I didn’t understand until mid-season 2 that Emily actually cared about her. But Amanda pursuing Jack at all - manipulating his memories of a childhood friend- is almost as toxic as Emily/Daniel season 1.
    Next, I also understand why Emily ends up with Jack and not Aiden. To me, it’s the same exact reason why Katniss ends up with Peeta and not Gale. Emily and Aiden would be too similar (and thus would be trapped in trauma) while Jack actually brought out her selfless/soft side. Aiden always felt like Daniel’s replacement in the love triangle with Jack. But it honestly would’ve been more appropriate for her to end up alone.
    Lastly, the show should have ended at season 3. It’s the best season after season 1 (the mom storyline in season 2 was underdeveloped), and it ends with Emily getting her revenge but very bitter and alone. David’s role in season 4 reminds a lot of Alison post-season 3 of PLL. While David’s character is more interesting, I’m very tired of the “character we thought was dead is actually alive” cliche.

He’s also insecure he has money but a lot of people at to use him for that which is why he’s kinda of a loner and even when he want friends people think he is weird or strange I really had a lot of empathy’s for his character. He did let Emily get away with a lot but he also had time where he put his foot down and told Emily when she went to far and was wrong which ended up in him ignoring her. Emily was also very hostile towards to him he understands why she behaves like that. Honestly he also wanted to protect the daughter of the only person who believed in his goals and dreams. I think the thing with Emily is while she’s lost a father the same way Jack had, Jack was grown... Jack had Declan and his friends, even Emily. When Emily lost her dad she was only a child, and every single person around her was against her and only looking out for themselves... You honestly can’t blame her for being cold to everyone around her, even those helping, for the first 2 seasons because she was so used to everyone having a secret vendetta her entire life. And even when she found out Charlotte was her sister she was amongst the Graysons, and still very much in their control.
    Think of it like this: if someone locked a baby in a room for the first 18 years of their life, and the only people they ever came into contact with had cruel intentions , they’re not going to have the same social interactions and understand social queues the same way most people would. Emily never fully trusted Amanda until it was too late, and it was only in Amanda dying that she finally realised that Amanda would die for her.

    • @iJamieM
      @iJamieM 3 роки тому +7

      It’s also worth noting that while she had a terrible childhood and could never trust anyone directly around her, she wasn’t necessarily a horrible person. She had donated millions to children’s hospitals and foster care so that kids wouldn’t have the same upbringing she did. There are good sides to her they just can’t be shown much by the writers because they can’t make Emily appear soft to the people around her. Even with Victoria, is she a bit of an arsehole? Absolutely, but she was made that way from childhood traumas, with a good side popping up every now and again.

    • @margarethmichelina5146
      @margarethmichelina5146 Рік тому

      Because of the abusement of her childhood, Emily grows up to be an emontionless human and she lacks of empathy. She's even changing her identity ilegally with real Emily Thorne or fake Amanda Clarke. Whenever she's on her Revenge mode, she's always look very excited and focus by manipulating many people with her charms. But, whenever she's on her daily basic day, she looks like a robot which gets switched off. Even in Season 4 opening in Memorial Day, Nolan noticed that she's acting off and even ask her personally, "What are you gonna do right now?" It's like she has no purpose on her life anymore! And then David's coming back makes her losing her mind because she feels betrays and even questioning her existency.
      She refused to reveal her identity because of how people sees Amanda Clarke as "Terrorist's daughter" and she's afraid people will judge her like that. She's even always throwing Nolan and Jack under the bus because of her secrecy. Even responsible for making Amanda and Aiden death indirectly. She's showing a lot of sign of mental illness because of her abusement mentally. It would be better if in the end of Season 4, she gets locked up in the same Asylum where she locked Victoria in the end of Season 3 instead of happily ever after with Jack. So, after David dies for real, they lock her up as the punishment of going to revenge path.

    I pretty much disagree with everyone in the comments and video lol. Emily did harm people in the process of getting revenge but it was established season 1 that she was not evil, but seeking justice for her father. That was solidified in the season 1 finale when she didn’t kill the white haired man. Season 3 and 4 was all about her trying to stop harming others (hence her relationship with Jack and all those scenes of her telling him how guilty she feels for Fauxmanda’s death despite not causing it) in the process of seeking justice. Victoria and Conrad died by their own hands, not Emily’s. The ending with her choosing peace and to live with Jack was foreshadowed in season 1 when she gave up her revenge plot to be with Jack.
    I’m also surprised by the amount of Aiden and Emily shippers. Aiden was clearly a filler character who didn’t even exist in season 1 until they needed a plot line to extend the life of the show. The main love triangle was always Jack X Emily X Daniel with jack representing Emily’s redemption arc.

      For me, it didn’t feel like he was introduced late but rather he was just a male version of Emily created to add filler into the show (same with the Initiative). The way he constantly forced his will on Emily (framing Jack for the murder of the priest, forcing her to give up her revenge when Emily wasn’t ready to) as opposed to Jack who made Emily genuinely want to give up her revenge for him (which made Aiden soo jealous) made him feel like he was always a roadblock in their relationship rather than a viable second option. To me, the viable second option was Daniel, and I feel like the Aiden relationship just took screen time away from the Emily x Daniel relationship which I would have rather seen.

He tried to help her from day one and She was too annoyed with him even after She saw She needed and used his help every Time. What i don't agree îs that You also mention Amanda here - sorry, but She deserved all that behaviour from Emilly. Maybe not in the beggining, when She was treating her as a servant more than a firend, instead of asking nicely She was barking orders. I was surpised because i thought Emily should have been smarter than that. But then Amanda did the msot cunning thing and stole Emilly's life and identity. Even her ex cursh Jack, which by the way She lied to big Time, the poor guy fell inlove with her assuming She was someone else. She didn't even asked perimiton to Emily, She just decide out of the blue to take up her identity (even tho She was already known as Karen) and She did that onowing Jakc will fall deeper for her ( he was attracted to her, but when he fund She îs Amanda, really fell all the way for her). And You call her sweet after all this???? girl, wake up. Emilly has alot of flaws (especially heing rude to the people that help her for no reason) but Amanda?? Amanda did her dirty when She assumed her identity infront of Jack. She betrayed her friend and stole everything for her because poor her She only wanted a family și that justified her actions ?! She did all that in a very cunning way, and i am glad Emily staied composes and used her, She deserved it. She got what She deserved in my oppinon. Nolan îs the only one who deserved better treatment. All he did was help in big qays and getting shit about it, he îs the real victime, not Amanda. Amanda îs far from being a vitim, She was Shameless the way She lied and stole that life but hey îs ok because She wanted to have a home. 🙄 Right. Please. She was better off running to France, why didn't She start a family there? She just HAD to take over her "firend" identy, life and ex boyfriend, didn't She?? She was a greedy bitch in my oppinon and betrayed her firend for her owb alwfish reasons, She deserved the hate

    Well the reason Victoria didn't want to confess anything after seeing that fake Charlotte kidnapping video was that at that time she was fairly certain that Emily really was Amanda Clarke and had a feeling Emily was behind the kidnapping. She knew nothing was going to happen to Charlotte so she didn't want to admit her role in the David Clarke thing because it would have been pointless.

    • @margarethmichelina5146

      Also, Victoria never care so much to Charlotte. Every time Charlotte is in danger, she's always in somewhere place or even having an affair with different men! She's always using Charlotte as her puppet most of the time. She's way priotizing Daniel since Daniel was born on a rich family and remember that Victoria stole Conrad from Stevie, Conrad's first wife and also Jack's mother as she herself is a selfish manipulative golddigger whore.
      And Charlotte is the daughter of David Clarke, the man once she loved but she betrayed him because of how Conrad threaten her to be killed and also because of selfishness. The worst part is when Charlotte got kidnapped by a member of the gang, her parents (David and Victoria) were on date and they're not even visitting Charlotte on rehab at once to see what's she doing.
      Also, both Charlotte and Patrick (her firstborn son who is the product of rape by her own father whom she abandoned since she was a baby because she wanted to go to college and then he appeared at Season 3) didn't attend her fake funeral. How irony that her legitimate son, Daniel died while her 2 "bastard" children left her for good. Also, Daniel ranted to Victoria last time for going too far to Emily, for making her suffer again by separating her again with David.

      After many terrible childhood that she has been through, she becomes an emotionless human. Even in the beginning of Season 4, Nolan is concern of what will she do after her revenge is over as she's not being herself anymore. Also, carrying the name Emily Thorne for so long make her feel out of touch of reality. It's like Emily Thorne is her split personality while Amanda Clarke died a long time ago. Technically, she should've been in prison for identity theft in the end but I don't think it will be count since both Amanda and Emily (either real or fake one) agreed to exchange their identity. But both of them make the name Amanda Clarke dirty. Fake Amanda a.k.a real Emily became a stripper while real Amanda is pretending as somebody else for so long.

    Omg, thank you for mentioning voice narration. It was so bad and brought absolutely nothing to the table. It was something like “sometimes you afraid to lose someone you trust... and then you do”. So deep.
    Also I do not understand in what universe this is set. Why regular people always kill someone like it’s nothing. Charlotte trying to kill Emily completely ruined her character for me. And in the end everyone was mad at the lie that Daniel attacked Emily and she killed him. They were like “but he was a good man”. He actually shot her before... and didn’t suffer any consequences.
    Honestly kept watching just for Nolan. Can’t understand why the best character ended up alone

    I think you don’t give Jack Porter enough credit. (I’ll use the girls original names to avoid confusion) Jack fell in love with Amanda all over again while she was going by Emily. There were several times he expressed his love for her before he knew that she was Amanda. When Emily came into the picture as Amanda she used her knowledge of jacks emotions for little Amanda to manipulate him, and like most people he used that trauma she allegedly went through as Amanda to excuse a lot of her bad behavior to a point. She also had Amanda’s help with manipulating Jack by giving her knowledge about their childhood (And yes he was a little blinded by the childhood love he had for Amanda) but after Emily took off he literally gave up on her and forgot about her. He then began to actually pursue Amanda as Emily so much so that she was going to give up on her revenge and be with him. But just as Amanda and Jack were about to be together Emily showed up pregnant with jacks baby. Jack was obviously not happy about this and wanted to be with Amanda but stayed with Emily out of duty and obligation to their child. He did somewhat come to terms with it just before Emily died. And when Amanda told Jack everything about the switch he got angry. He then helped her for a while but their romantic relationship wasn’t happening. He at that point tried to move on from all the revenge stuff by being with Margo until her magazine got into bed with the Greysons. Then after she took it too far with the kidnapping of Charlotte he left her and ditched the Hamptons for a long time. (Until he was forced back) so yeah it’s a little unfair to say he just automatically loved anyone who says they are Amanda. He loved Amanda even before he knew she was Amanda, and he loved Emily because Emily manipulated him to.

    i enjoyed your take on the show a lot but i wanted to explain a few points that you might have missed.
    first of all, jack called her amanda in the end because she took on her real name (amanda clarke) again after her father came back. the only one who was still calling her “emily” or “ems” was nolan because the time they spent together while emily was fulfilling her revenge meant a lot to him. he felt appreciated and by calling her that he is kind of reminiscing about that time.
    second, amanda did not get her happy ending just like that. she lost a lot of people she loved in the process. in the beginning of the series there was this quote: “when you begin a journey of revenge, start by digging two graves: one for your enemy and one for yourself.” as we all know, amanda did not die in the end or got punished for killing victoria; because she didn’t. amanda was on the verge of killing victoria but her father appeared and he shot victoria. he did this to prevent his daughter from going to jail for life. david already knew he had cancer and would die anyways. so when amanda said in the end that the love of her father for her prevented her from losing her life, she meant the fact that her father was the one who killed victoria for her.
    i thought that the series was very good and although i wasn’t a fan of them bringing david back to life, the way they did it was okay.
    also, i never really saw amanda as the bad guy. her motives were very understandable and yes, she did do horrible things but it was very clear that she was traumatized and felt like there was nothing to hold onto except for her plan. and when she realized that charlotte was her sister it was already too late for her to just pull out of her plan. she became obsessed with it. but in the end, especially through her father she was able to let go of emily thorne and was able to finally embrace her true self again: amanda clarke.

    Aiden's death, although very sad and heartbreaking, was poetic. He was the ONE for Emily. It reflected the theme of the first season.( Before embarking on a journey of revenge, dig two graves). I'll just tell you something I noticed as someone who liked to study villain dynamic.
    If we look at Emily as someone who is not supposed to care about her friends and family (excluding her father), her moments when she does appear heartwarming, like the hug scene with Charlotte, or her calling Nolan her friend, or showing some vulnerability with Jack, or showing real care for Daniel etc. But if we go with the assumptions she already cares, than her moments of mistreatment really stand out. The truth is Emily is genuinely a terrible friend.
    She is the kind of friend who expect you to drop everything for her and even if you do she acts annoyed if you are having second thoughts or not doing it fast enough. And while she never says the line "you'll do it if you love me", she does try to pull Nolan back in by implying he doesn't love her FATHER enough ("I thought you loved my father"). (I think this was 1x07) And there's a scene and this might actually be on accident where she says she knows how much his company means to him and she sounds so disingenious and toxic, like she doesn't mean it in the slightest.
    Jack even calls her out on this "You use everyone who cares about you, you took everything from me, even this goodbye". Also an interesting detail is little Amanda Clarke. She is supposed to be an innocent, carefree little girl. It's supposed to be believable that fake Amanda would be this girl. But later Jack and Emily have this scene where they talk about her wishes and who little Emily/Amanda never told him her wish as she was afraid of letting people in. Which goes against the whole narrative that her childhood made Emily the way she is, if even the little girl version has this issue.

    Glad to see so many different opinions in the comments section because it's a very interesting show with a lot of complex characters. I really love season 1, it's definitely one of my favorite shows and I keep re-watching the first season, but the rest of the seasons just aren't it for me. I think in season 2 the characters slowly started to loose what was interesting about them. For example, Victoria was my favorite villain in season 1, she is obviously a terrible person but we see that she really loved David Clarke and betraying him is something that still haunts her. It was very interesting to watch the main villain of the show kind of redeem herself in the first season finale. Then in season 2 Victoria just forgets about her plan to clear David's name and make Conrad pay for what he's done. She becomes a cliche bad character.
    Aiden was an unnecessary character imo since it was obvious that Emily and Jack were going to be together in the end. I get that the whole childhood friends storyline might not be realistic but it made the show more emotional (for example the scene in 1x21, where Sammy dies but brings Emily and Jack back together, was very touching).
    I wish it had a better ending but Revenge is a very special show for sure.

      44:27 I think the white-haired man already suspected her true identity and also Nolan's life was in danger so Emily had to be very direct. And the reason why Emily left him there after couldn't killing him was because she thought her father's name was about to be cleared and the white-haired man wouldn't have time for anything other than escaping somewhere abroad.

    I just hate how Emily uses innocent people get what she wants. She uses Daniel not to mention she cheats on him with Aiden. Then she acts like this poor innocent wife that is being cheated on when Daniel gets together with Sara. The worst part is that she doesn’t even love Daniel, she was just using him to get what she wanted.While Daniel love for her was pure and he even wanted to run away with Emily. Daniel may have been a jerk to Emily during season 3, but his actions are completely justified. She tortures and kidnaps Charlotte in season 3 episode 21 plus when Aidan and Jack tried to stop her, she doesn’t care that Charlotte is in pain she just says that charlotte will get over it. If she only gets revenge on the people that destroyed her father, that’s fine. But what angers me so much is that Emily manages to get innocent people hurt or even dead. Not to mention she uses innocent people to gain what she wants. A lot of characters in the show have told her to stop but she still continues on her revenge even when it becomes to extreme. Emily may have experienced hurt from what the Greysons and the other people that have hurt her but she is far from being innocent.
