13:35 "and uses its chaos energy to transform into super MechaSonic" really!? I thought it was just a super Mario Bros Z thing...you mean to tell me it's actually Canon
We all know the best version of Mecha Sonic is the one from Super Mario Bros Z haha. A genuine Terminator, the episode where he destroys Yoshi's Island STILL rocks my socks off
I will always remember Mecha Sonic thanks to how Super Mario Bros. Z interpreted him; Metal Sonic in an upgraded form hellbent on destroying everything. Also I always thought the chest cavity on Mk.2 was some kind of energy cannon that was hidden to simply conceal a weakpoint. Thinking of it as being Mecha's eye and that his head is just a helmet is kinda unnerving.
I always thought the cavity was the intake for his engine, and the chestplate served as a shield that opened up to vent or help with the transformation, with the light in it being the intake gap, and the light on the head disappearing because he was looking up. The idea that it's his _eye_ is something I never thought about.
I really wish Mecha would appear in a modern Sonic game with a prominent role the way Metal often has. Imagine a bitter rivalry between the two as a storyline? I'd pay to see that
@@genericusername3334 metal serves as the "evil" sonic, balancing out the playing field, without metal, alot of the fights would seem one sided or boring/repetitive. He also serves as a good even adversary to sonic. a rival that isnt a giant robot. it gives off a more a fair 1 on 1 vibe to the fights
Mecha sonic is honestly one of the best characters, and one of the best villaind,he's one of the reasons why sonic 3 was masterpiece and the fact that the fans give him a fan forms with a great designs/concepts make sense why he always our favourite sonic character,he was so badass in the smbz series as metalix
The showdown with Knuckles in Sky Sanctuary is still one of the coolest things the Sonic series ever did. The way Mecha Sonic shreds the Egg Robo that has been tormenting you so mercilessly, the way it uses not one, but two of the best boss themes in the series, and the fact that it uses the Master Emerald to go super was just mind-blowing back in the '90s! Also, I always liked the idea of heroes/villains mixing up enemies. Sure, Mecha Sonic was clearly designed as an anti-Sonic weapon, but its most iconic moment is a fight with Knuckles, which it ran into due to unpredictable circumstances. It makes the world feel more lively and less like a pre-programmed game.
Following on that last point, I think that's something the Knuckles story kind of exuded throughout its runtime. Knuckles was essentially just going through what was left of Eggman's forces leftover on the Island.
also, Mecha Sonic MKII is one of the first characters to ever use a Super form against you, and also the first time a enemy had a super form. though seeing as he used the super form against Knuckles is kinda ironic to me, seeing as at the start of sonic 3, Knuckles knocks the super out of sonic, and the final boss for Knuckles, is a super metallic sonic. who he can't knock the super out of.
I thought that “eye” mecha sonic had in his body was his power source, and he exposes it when absorbing the energy of the master emerald to get as much as he can from it.
Exactly, it's not like he couldn't just turn his visor off (the equivalent of closing his eyes) while he's charging up. And it makes a lot more sense than moving a giant eyeball from his head to his body for no real reason; he could have just kept his eye in his head to charge his energy or fire those blasts. So that has to be his power core.
Oh wow, thanks for the shout out man!!! I'm planning on covering this wonderful set of bots some more next month, I'll be sure to share the love for this video. It's so awesome knowing there are others out there that love these goofy robots as much as I do.
No problem at all. Uncovering the mystery of the Sonic Adventure Mecha Sonic was brilliant. I'm not really familiar with Godzilla so I never would've made the connection. Looking forward to seeing your take on these bots.
Apologist, you put in hella work with all of your Speed Readings and Re-reviews, thanks bro. It's creators like you two that ensure Sonic's legacy will endure for future "Generations"...
I don't think Mecha Sonic's popularity can be overstated. Purely because of his role in SMBZ, and how damn influential that series of Flash Animations is. Monty Oum even cited it as an inspiration. Without SMBZ, we might not have gotten RWBY. Among the fan of Sonic fan writers, SMBZ started a lot. It wasn't the first really influential one (I believe that honor belongs to Sonic's Quest for Power) but like Doom, it's the one everyone remembers. There's countless flash animations with clear inspiration from SMBZ. Not to mention characters. Honestly I think SMBZ sums up the the entire Sonic Fanbase as a whole. Despite our difficulties, we'll always hope for a better future, because it CAN happen. Why else would you have fans wait for years or go out and see his movie in storm?
I feel like with mecha Sonic covered, a good next step would be metal Sonic himself. He's always been a really cool antagonist, and he's been in so many places. I especially love his appearances in the OVA and the Chaotix.
I more prefer that Mecha sonic and Metal sonic are two entirely different strains of robot. It gives more diversity than just having Metal being the absolute best Mecha version, it's like the Mechas are trying to compete with Metal to see which version is better.
Mecha Sonic from Sonic 3 is still my favorite robotic Sonic, generally just the coolest one of them all and I’m so happy you’re covering them along with all the Mechas
I do have a possible explanation of why Sonic 2’s Mecha Sonic in the Fleetway comics looked so fugly and weirdly damaged; in Stay Sonic (the book that was directly used as the backbone for S.T.C’s lore and characterisation), it describes the boss as not being made of metal/ steel, but rather stone: “An evil-looking Sonic made of stone will float down from the ceiling on jet boots.” - Page 53
Likewise a Sonic 2 guide from that time called him the Stone Sonic. Another reason why it is damaged is that the events of Sonic 2 had already happened and Sonic had defeated the Sonic robot then. This time Sonic kicked off its head and the Death Egg I was sent to the bottom of the ocean never to be seen again.
Mecha Sonic is engraved in my head due the flash and sprite animations, that still go hard to this day. When I saw Mecha Sonic in SMBZ remake, my nostalgia went into turbo mode, on top of the music pumping the heck out of me.
I had this large Sonic strategy guidebook in the 4th grade either 94 or 95 and it had strategy guides for Sonic 1-3 in it (maybe knuckles too I can't remember) and it had details about lore in the game too in addition to the strategy guides. That's where I learned the Metal Sonic at the end of 2 was called Mecha Sonic.
It's such a shame too since I've always preferred Mecha Sonic II in terms of design over Metal Sonic. I've always liked how it looks and just think it looks more menacing
@@littenfire3563 well from what I understand there is a canon reason why egg man stopped the production of them after metal and it is because he was the best one he was able to make. As he is able to match Sonic in speed, strength and isn’t as robotic as his past prototypes, which can be seen with the fact his move set isn’t as linear as The mechas (see how the first three of them have relatively simple attack patterns and don’t seem to have too much intelligence compared to metal)
@@CommanderDiamond678 Actually Naoto Ohshima co-creator of Sonic and the director of Sonic CD has said he doesn't consider Sonic CD a numbered to sequel to either Sonic 1 or Sonic 2(and no its a not a prequel either) but a reimagination of Sonic 1. So basically the Sonic classic trilogy and Sonic CD are in completely separate and independent universe/timelines. Which I'm totally cool with since I've always considered Sonic CD its own separate thing and it confirms my head canon that Mecha Sonic is the BEST metal sonic...at least in Classic Sonic trilogy games.
@@goldman77700 that's not quite true. Sonic CD chronologically takes place between Sonic 1 and 2. What Ohshima meant was that Sonic CD is considered to be a standalone title meaning it's not a sequel or prequel to any Sonic game. It's still officially considered to be a part of the classic Genesis Sonic series.
@@the757general2 Oshima also stated that he considers Metal Sonic to be the evolution of Mecha Sonic. Of course that is contradicted by the game order of Origins, but messing with the canon is nothing new for Sega.
Yeah, he didn't really explain that part well. You're right that he only runs out of energy when he uses the energy balls, although when he only has 2 or 3 hits left, he starts conserving energy, moving more slowly and only attacking with spreads of coins. The only reason he can even be hit at this point is because he seems to fall out of his super form for brief moments, probably shorting out because of the damage he's taken (13 or 14 hits in a row, more than the Death Egg Robot).
I always called Mk1 'Metal Sonic' as at the time the more iconic Metal Sonic didn't exist yet. But my god he was the bane of my childhood, the spike in difficult from Metrozone to this MechaSonic and then DeathEgg Robot was just insane. I eventually learned how to be him but never in my childhood beat the Death Egg and the music still gives me PTSD. I did eventually do it when I got older but I wish I could've overcome it as a kid because I tried so many times.
Great video Sir. As you did Ashura, have you thought of covering any other fan made Sonic characters, like Omlette, Robotnik's daughter created from a mistaken upside down sprite.?
I always thought the lens on Mecha Sonic's chest was some type of particle Cannon mounted on his core similar to the one egg man uses with the Master Emerald in Death Egg Zone's final boss fight. they both seem to do the exact same thing Charged and released energy from the Master Emerald in the form of energy projectiles. As for his eye I always thought because his head was tilted up and his eye appears through a slit you just couldn't see it because of the angle or the light was temporarily turned off like he was closing his eyes while absorbing the energy or possibly redirecting all power to his core. It also make sense that the particle Cannon was never used on sonic because Mecha Sonic didint have access to The emerald in those fights
15:48 For me what I see is that the light that comes from his visor is the same eye looking sensor that it has on its chest, meaning that it always has an eye up there and when it charges itself with the master emerald the eye sensor thing comes down exposing itself
13:35 That battle freaked me out! I thought I was going against Robotnik again but when Doomsday Zone's music kicked in, I was like "What in the world?" The moment he went Super, I panicked!
15:50 so not only he is the most badass metalic version of sonic but he is KINDA an lovecraftian like robot? Damn every day we get more and more respect for the dude lol
Silver Sonic/Mk 1. is my favorite bossfight ever, he looks so cool, and he was easily the hardest fight in all of Sonic 2 for me, I had to use Debug Mode on the mobile port to practice actually dealing damage to him, as, for some reason, there's a bug where spindashing into him will clip you into his spikes and kill you, so you had to be precise with your attacks.
I always figured the "eye" in mecha was it's power source it had to manually expose to the emerald to power up but the eye is probably serves both purposes.
As someone who played the sonic games and wasn;t steeped in pheripheral materials, "silver" sonic was always to me mecha sonic and the mecha sonic in 3&K was instantly recognized as being related, and felt like an amazing revival, I was so pumped
I love how you went into detail about Mecha Sonic Mk. II. I've been looking over hid design for years, though I feel like I should mention that if you line up all the sprites of his charging animation, you'll notice that the eye-core actually isnt in his chest, but beneath his _head._ His entire upper body raises upwards along with his "helmet" to reveal the eye, and his chest-door doesn't have anything inside.
One of the things that I think makes mecha sonic in Sonic 3 and Knuckles so memorable is just how "wrong" he feels. He doesn't socket neatly into the art-style of Sonic 3: being much taller than other iterations of the character without really scaling up his head, combined with that narrow eye-slit for his single eye and many parts of his body lacking the sleek casings of other robotnik creations, showing the bare greebling on his arms, legs, and chest. Typically being stylistically inconsistent isn't a good thing, but I think in Mecha Sonic's case it really makes him just that much more menacing, like he comes from a much darker place.
With people mentioning how Mk.2's 'Eye' is more likely a 'Core', it brought to my mind another Boss - the CPU Core/Gravity Core from Launch Base/Titanic Monarch Zone. It was both a Combat Processing Unit and Power Distribution Unit, as well as a Gravity Manipulation System, housed on a swivelling pillar mount. If you think about it, Mecha Sonic Mk.2's Core is just a smaller variant of this Boss, and exhibits the same abilities just on a much more Mobile body!
I had always thought Mecha Sonic was an upgraded version of Metal Sonic when I was younger, and this thought was further cemented when I watched the original version of the Super Mario Bros. Z flash animation for at least a little longer until I discerned the difference between the two.
I like to see the characters from Sonic Satam. I grew up in the 90s, and loved that show. I like to see some love for characters like Sally Acorn, Bunnie Rabbot, Rotor the Walrus, Antoine D'Collette, Dulcy the Dragon... even Ixis Naugus could make a cool video.
Not sure if anyone else already posted this but in Sonic 2 when Mecha Sonic charges at you in a dash (not as a ball though) there's a small frame where you can just stand, let him dash you and before getting damage you jump. Resulting in damaging him. This pretty much made the fight in death egg zone go faster in I think just 8 moves.
Oh here’s a fun fact: Robotnik might’ve been trying to recreate Sonic all the way in Sonic 1. In Spring Yard Zone, we have robot armadillos. Why are they peculiar? Well they curl into balls, speed around, and are colored blue and red. So perhaps Eggman’s first attempt at Sonic came out as an armadillo, probably because Sonic goes too fast to figure out what animal he is.
Mk1 definitely has the coolest sprite. I love the menacing eye and the tires on his feet - makes sense if Robotnik was trying to "copy" Sonic's strengths. The Mk2 sprite lacks personality, and the chest cannon is a bit too much removed from Sonic.
Mecha Sonic in SMBZ: *a godly nightmare who is easily capable of destroying everything with energy blasts, missiles, bullets and all sorts of dangerous fire power.* Mecha Sonic as a boss: *spins and a very limited super form.*
Mecha Sonic has always been my favorite of Eggman’s robots honestly, though I’ve always loved all the Sonic-bots. He’s just so cool, like he’s the only robot to canonically possess the ability to go super in the games, how could you NOT think that’s neat? His design is super sleek too, and would look amazing in 3D. I really hope we get to see him again, as well as his silver Death Egg counterpart. I think it’d be neat to have Metal, Mecha and Silver(mecha? the sonic 2 one) form a team of robot sonics for a bossfight or something Speaking of Silver Sonic, I like how he’s kinda a security bot for the Death Egg. I guess it’d make sense that Eggman would have his sonic badnik be the one to stop Sonic from entering lol
i have a feeling that the unnamed mecha sonic was going to be used as a playable character in sonic heroes. i remember seeing something which said that mighty, ray and a metal sonic were talked about to be their own team in heroes, but never saw the light of day. maybe this unnamed mecha sonic could have been meant for that
I liked Mecha sonic. The single solitary beam "eye" with the fitting visor gave Mecha Sonic the much feared absence of "humanoid" emotion. It gave him a much more cold and calculating appearance than the others.
I love Mecha mk2. The impression he left on me as a kid playing 3&K has kept him my favourite robot duplicate so far. While Metal can match or even surpass Sonic in speed, Mecha always felt like he was a greater threat. He almost was a mix of Sonic and Eggman, combining the benefits of a robot body, Sonic's speed and form as a basic template, and Eggman's cunning. I would love to see him get some more love in the future.
Funny, I never knew that 'silver sonic' was actually effectively Mecha Sonic mk1! It does indeed make both it and its successor in S3&K way cooler. As for the hypothetical mk3 in Sonic Adventure, given it has an idle animation despite being a robot in a tube, if I had to guess they probably partially implemented him to use as a boss, but ended up scrapping the idea and opted to leave the model in as an easter egg. If it was JUST intended as an easter egg to begin with, there'd be no real reason to animate it.
I was going to mention the canon/eye thing on mark 2. His head lifts up and back out of the way, while his chest flips open. As you've shown the pixels of the canon lines up to where his eye is. I remember looking at the sprites years back and noticing that. Cool to see others know about it. That artwork showing it off really looked spot on.
Doesn't have to be an "Eye" per say. Could literally just be a Core. Even in the sprites he has another line at his chest that is lit up, not just in LEGO. Just not as apparent. I always thought it was his core being exposed and he needed to expose it to power up and absorb the energy directly. I was wondering what those little dudes were in Sonic Mania. At first I was thinking they functioned kind of like "Silver Sonic" where i couldn't hit him during his Spinning Animations, but figured since he's so small and there isn't a chainsaw blade sound queue that it should be fine, which lead me to realize I had to use him like a pinball. So many references in that boss fight.
I honestly never thought of Mecha 2’s chest thing as an eye, I usually compared it to the Death Egg Robot’s laser thing it shoots as you run from it, i assumed it was like a Lens that amplifies a laser
One of the things is that the bad ending to Knuckles' story in S&K actually shows Mecha Sonic still being intact after the final fight. So it can be argued that he is still around but simply yet to be found and reactivated by Robotnik.
interesting info, the Sonic 2 Mecha Sonic fight. When he does his charge attack (the one where he doesn't turn into a ball) , you can actually attack him by timing your jump as he aproches, basically you'll jump THROUGH him making it easy hits.
It warms my fucking soul to see someone who appreciates Mecha Sonic (the blue one) as much as I do- Someone who actually appreciate shim because of the fucking game he appeared in, and NOT solely because of SMBZ. Mecha Sonic was absolutely awesome in his own right for that game due to all of the reasons that you mentioned, and until today I genuinely thought I was the only person on the planet who thought that. I'm glad I'm not.
I always envisioned Mecha as being slower than Metal Sonic, but significantly tougher and stronger. Mainly since Mk. 2 is a fucking tank. Being able to take 16 hits in a single fight, and being able to take 24 over the entirety of Sonic 3 & Knuckles makes it much tougher than even the Death Egg Robot. In Sonic CD meanwhile, Metal Sonic runs into a wall and dies.
Finally someone talks about the lego dimensions mecha fights! Honestly that entire level pack has so much fan service and references you need to make a whole video on all of it due to how much love was put into it
Mecha sonic from sonic 2 (master system/game gear) only drops the chaos emerald if you collected the others before hand (always found in act 2) If you didn't collect the emeralds before you face him or even miss just one, the game ends after this fight and instead of going to crystal egg zone, you get the "bad ending" slammed in your face 😈
I read The Scrapnick sonic miniseries and mecha Sonic MK 2 appears and has a huge role in it. Glad that he received more love and attention Oh and there’s also Gamma from Sonic Adventure in that miniseries (Correction: he isn’t The one from Sonic Adventure but one of his brothers) And there’s metal knuckles
I think I enjoyed the S&K version just because of his super form. Made it a much more fun battle, and it was great to see a sonic bot make use of the emeralds like the protagonist does.
@@JohnnyVector true but let's be real here the super mecha form never made too much sense I always found it weird that he had to recharge after some seconds
Well, Super forms aren’t permanent. In Sonic 2, when super, your rings were depleted by one ring per second, and as soon as you were out of rings, you turned back to normal.
Dunno if anyone told you, but IDW has Mechasonic MK2 in their scrapnik island arc which iirc is the most recent arc and he has a huge role to play during it
Mecha Sonic has remained my favorite version of Metal Sonic for over a decade and a half. Purely because of his role in Super Mario Bros Z. That series is the only reason aside from Sonic Heroes that I'm invested in Metal Sonic and the Sonic franchise as a whole. Plus, Mecha Sonic has done what a lot of my favorite characters of all time have failed to do and that is stay at the top of my favorite characters of all time list. Mecha Sonic has that deep personal connection with me to the point where I officially like to classify him as the real Metal Sonic since Metal's lost his edge over the years after his defeat in Sonic Heroes and his overabundances of appearances in other Sonic media where he's often a first boss and a repeating mini boss before a real boss fight. Mecha Sonic has yet to be truly tainted by SEGA's bad writing. However, the SMBZ version that I love so very deeply was replace d by the shittier version called Metallix in the reboot of the series. Hence why I despise modern day Sonic fans who are sheep for anything new and exciting claiming everything is epic. People have gotten so used to SEGA's modern day crap writing that they will just eat it up. If I were in charge of SEGA, I would dump classic Metal Sonic entirely and replace him with Mecha Sonic and give him everything that the SMBZ version has since it's the most impressive version of the character.
I've never liked Super Mario Bros Z Mecha Sonic very much. He's just a generic villain. Sure, he's intimidating, but he has no other personality traits aside from being "evil."
I always liked the one from Sonic 3 & Knuckles the most. He's got the most badass looking sprite and actually gets to use the Master Emerald for a power-up.
This is really interesting and something ive never really thought about before. I only really ever experienced the one from Sonic 2, back in the day. As for the Encyclo-speed-ia..well, Im gunna have to grab that up. I didnt even know such a thing existed haha. Really great video, you've gained a new subscriber :)
I think his eye is in his head, as his head appears to lift up far above normal. Similar to a helmet visor when it lifts up, it goes way up beyond the wearers eyes. And since this is a machine, instead of the head just looking up, it lifts and shifts on a more complex hinge. Like, it pops out before before moving up, like a car boot would. He still has a light in his chest, like the LEGO one does, but I think that's meant to be glow from his eye light and not a separate one, unless it is then it looks like it turns off when his head lifts up to reveal his eye.
I like to think the robot is a Mecha Sonic 2.5 as he seems to be a halfway mix between Mecha Sonic 1 and Mecha Sonic 2 and was possibly shelved after Eggman created a superior version in the form of Mecha Sonic 2.
Kinda do like the idea of one of the mechas existing but not being fought in the games, does make it seem like a bigger time gap between 3 and adventure and makes the world feel larger like we're just getting a slice of a bigger story
Yooooo another upload! About one of my fave chars in Sonic. Honestly Mecha Sonic in the comics was my favourite, probably the best iteration imo. Its me the same dude who requested Tikal btw. But I switched accs because I'm stupid lmao Love these vids. Excited for the next one!
Thank you! Hopefully I didn't do the Archie version of Mecha Sonic a disservice in this video. I had to cut a few things for time so had to gloss over him.
"Mark Zero?" Why would you name a prototype "Mk. 0" not "Mk. 1"? This is not how you iterate hardware. You always start "Marks" with a positive value. "Mark 0" would mean that nothing was produced yet and it's still in the planning phase. You can have 1 and 1.5, if you insist on numbering two models before Mk. 2, as different iteration of the same line, but "Mk 0" doesn't make sense
Excellent video as always, seeing your videos come up as a notification on my phone is always a treat. I can never get enough of hearing people just have a talk about my favorite series.
Who would've thought that the guy who "hates that hedgehog" would have single handedly reinstated the entire hedgehog species with the ammount of hedgehogs he's made!
The thing about the master emerald is that sonic and Co could theoretically use it to go super form, it's just that 1.under normal circumstances knuckles probably wouldn't allow it as he's very protective of the master emerald. 2. The regular smaller chaos emeralds are powered by the master emerald so it's just more convenient to use those instead.
Well, the latest Bumbleking podcast, had Ian Flynn outright calling the Sonic Adventure bot "Mk III", so looks like it's indeed set in stone, not that there was really any doubt. Good job with the video as always. Seeing more people finally uncovering the truth of the ever evolving machine does my heart good.
To those who are curious as to the MK3 Mechagodzilla connection, first you must understand that the Mechagodzilla reference specifically refers to the first Mechagodzilla from the Showa Era, due to one of the traits being exclusive to Showa MG First, both Showa MG and MK3 have this orange to yellow, glassy eye texture Second, on both their knees and elbows are pads with spikes on them And the biggest red flag is that MK3 seems to have, one of the most Showa Era things ever; f i n g e r g u n s, tiny holes at the fingertips that would shoot out missiles (for MG it's missiles, but it's probably bullets or lasers for MK3 due to him being a bit small) which is so wacky yet badass at the same time (this is also something only Showa Era MG has, any other MG after does not have finger guns, except for Ready Player One)
Ok so in the era of “Shadow” versions of characters (evil clones of the protag that serve as bosses) this is probably the best take imo. Cool lineage thing, seems not just an imitation, but an actively objectively stronger version of you, also makes much more sense lore wise than “ooooo this evil monster is mimicking you ooooo” For people reading I’m not talking about shadow the hedgehog I’m talking about “Shadow” characters in general such as Shadow Link from the legend of Zelda series
i played every classic Sonic game in the 90's as they debuted, and sought out every game guide and magazine article available at the time to learn all the pro tips, secret codes, glitches etc. i definitely remember the "Mecha Sonic" iterations as being "RoboSonic" in Sonic 2, "Metal Sonic" in Sonic CD, and "Mecha Sonic" in Sonic 3 & Knuckles....at least, those were the respective monikers given by sources available in the US in 1992-1994
"Hahahahaha! Oh nothing... its just I cant believe how easy this is. I've been merely toying with you and I already have your new friends on the ropes."
As dope as Mecha Sonic from Sonic and Knuckles was (I mean, he went Super for goodness sake) I have a soft spot for Metal, or Metallix, just because of the Fleetway Sonic The Comics in the UK. The Brotherhood of Metallix was such a brilliant idea. I think StC's Mecha Sonic even mentions him during their fight. The Emperor Metallix just chilling in the throne was so damn cool. I was so gassed when I could finally play as him in Sonic Adventure.
I always felt like the three sonic badniks could form a sonic heroes-esque team, with metal being the speed, silver as the power, and mecha as the flying, and for their different modes like flight and combat they can combine
The silver sonic was a very early conceptual version of silver from sonic 06. This was revealed in an interview from Sonics ultimate genesis collection.
I’ll be honest, out of the four of them I have two favourites. Most people might not agree with me but I like Mecha mark 0 and Mecha mark 3 just because they haven’t been used too much unlike the other two. I’d like to see them both in a future sonic game. They could be like a double boss fight, 2v1. They could be found in eggman’s old lab, and have him remaster them. Giving mark 3 some abilities, and mark 0 some stronger attacks. That’s just my idea for them. Hope they get known a lot more.
Not sure Johnny is going to read this, but the reason why Silver Sonic looks “bad” in the Fleetway Comics is because it's early in the comic's lifespan, when the comic didn't have a defined art style. Sonic the Comic's 3rd issue, to be exact. Artists would pretty regularly draw in their own style. This specific version was drawn by Ferran Rodriguez, who was an artist at Disney during the golden age and during the early days of StC.
Mecha Sonic is the best metal copy imo, really gives you the terminator vibe. The first one feels like a prototype for Silver Sonic (Sonic 2), There is only one Mecha in all our hearts!

Ironically the Sonic The Comic version of Mecha Sonic the Metallix Mark 2 gets torn to shreds by Super Sonic.
also, Mecha Sonic MKII is one of the first characters to ever use a Super form against you, and also the first time a enemy had a super form.
though seeing as he used the super form against Knuckles is kinda ironic to me, seeing as at the start of sonic 3, Knuckles knocks the super out of sonic, and the final boss for Knuckles, is a super metallic sonic. who he can't knock the super out of.
I thought that “eye” mecha sonic had in his body was his power source, and he exposes it when absorbing the energy of the master emerald to get as much as he can from it.
It's both.
@@silverboltscrapper Source?
@@syweb2 Just look at Mecha's sprite sheet.
@@silverboltscrapper That's vague at best, we don't see it actually _doing_ anything to indicate that - all we have is speculation.
It's creators like you two that ensure Sonic's legacy will endure for future "Generations"...
my fav mecha sonic is mecha sonic mk1
The Timestamp Timeline:
1:24 Silver Sonic (Mecha MK 0)
4:33 Robo Sonic (Mecha MK I) 1992
11:23 Mecha Sonic (Mecha MK II) 1994
18:00 ? (Mecha MK III) 1998
I feel like MK III should be named Titanium Sonic
I call MK III Mecha Sonic "Mechanix", as a reference to the Brotherhood of Metallix from the Fleetway Sonic Comics, as well as the Mecha Sonic line.
Where does Metal Sonic fit in that timeline?
@@Here_is_Waldo Metal Sonic comes somewhere before Mecha Sonic and Mecha Sonic Mk. II.
MK III is called Holo Sonic i guess
I feel like with mecha Sonic covered, a good next step would be metal Sonic himself. He's always been a really cool antagonist, and he's been in so many places. I especially love his appearances in the OVA and the Chaotix.
I more prefer that Mecha sonic and Metal sonic are two entirely different strains of robot. It gives more diversity than just having Metal being the absolute best Mecha version, it's like the Mechas are trying to compete with Metal to see which version is better.
Mecha Sonic is EXTREMELY nostalgic to me! For reasons... outside, of sonic 3.
Wink, Wink ;)
Mecha Sonic from Sonic 3 is still my favorite robotic Sonic, generally just the coolest one of them all and I’m so happy you’re covering them along with all the Mechas
I do have a possible explanation of why Sonic 2’s Mecha Sonic in the Fleetway comics looked so fugly and weirdly damaged; in Stay Sonic (the book that was directly used as the backbone for S.T.C’s lore and characterisation), it describes the boss as not being made of metal/ steel, but rather stone:
“An evil-looking Sonic made of stone will float down from the ceiling on jet boots.”
- Page 53
@mario mash band bruh
It's too bad Sega never makes any more new robot sonics. Its just always metal. But great video.
I've always felt like Mecha from S3&K got overshadowed by Metal Sonic...
Also his "chest eye" acting like his core looks like a Kirby boss in a way.
My first thought 😂
Mecha MK II always had the best design to me. Hes more agile looking than the others and radical. I think he looks cooler than Metal.
Awesome. I discovered your channel a few days ago. As a Sonic fanatic since 91, I have to say your videos are excellent.
Thanks a lot!
Mecha Sonic's Super Form actually only runs out of energy when he uses the energy blast attack, or at least that's what happened when I played S3&K
I always had a soft spot for mark 1 even tho he took a while for me to beat
I wish he would be more noticed and more referenced in the modern games
Great video Sir. As you did Ashura, have you thought of covering any other fan made Sonic characters, like Omlette, Robotnik's daughter created from a mistaken upside down sprite.?
Huh... Hello, YOU.
Good to see you again. lol
I'd like to see an Omlette video as well !
I thought people were calling Omelette, Robotnik's niece.
Nazo.
@@fightclubhubbs I still say "niece"--it fits in with the classic 80s cartoon vibe.
Mecha M2 was always my favorite, The Fact that he had his own Super Form was insane!
Quite creepy ngl
Mecha’s “eye” in his chest is most likely a crystal used to focus projectile energy.
I can’t wait to watch this later! I love your videos especially when you talk about fleetway stuff!
Thanks a lot! There's a couple of Fleetway bits in here.
@@JohnnyVector that’s great to hear!
@@JohnnyVector STC Silver Sonic was damaged when Sonic fought him in STC issue 3, because the events of Sonic 2 had already happened.
Honestly, would LOVE an explained video on sonic 3 lore and your thoughts on it! Also this was such a good video!
@mario mash band ?
Mecha Sonic in SMBZ: *a godly nightmare who is easily capable of destroying everything with energy blasts, missiles, bullets and all sorts of dangerous fire power.*
Mecha Sonic as a boss: *spins and a very limited super form.*
I think it’d be neat to have Metal, Mecha and Silver(mecha? the sonic 2 one) form a team of robot sonics for a bossfight or something
Speaking of Silver Sonic, I like how he’s kinda a security bot for the Death Egg.
It gave him a much more cold and calculating appearance than the others.
i always thought it was like his power cell/generator
I didn't even realise it until researching a few things for this video. It blew my mind so I had to share it.
“The Emerald.” -Mecha Sonic from SMBZ
Wait... did I miss where you covered the one from Sonic CD? I love the race you had with him, and I though he was one of the cooler/sleeker versions!
i made the same mistake, thats METAL sonic. not MECHA sonic😓
interesting info, the Sonic 2 Mecha Sonic fight.
Honestly that entire level pack has so much fan service and references you need to make a whole video on all of it due to how much love was put into it
Mecha sonic from sonic 2 (master system/game gear) only drops the chaos emerald if you collected the others before hand (always found in act 2)
If you didn't collect the emeralds before you face him or even miss just one, the game ends after this fight and instead of going to crystal egg zone, you get the "bad ending" slammed in your face 😈
I read The Scrapnick sonic miniseries and mecha Sonic MK 2 appears and has a huge role in it.

@@kingofcrap4414 It's better than any alternative.
@@kingofcrap4414 Same.

But I switched accs because I'm stupid lmao
Love these vids. Excited for the next one!
Thank you! Hopefully I didn't do the Archie version of Mecha Sonic a disservice in this video. I had to cut a few things for time so had to gloss over him.
It's just an energy weapon. It's put on display for when he charges up using the master emerald, and is exposed for when he fires energy blasts.
That's how I've always interpreted it until seeing the whole 'eyeball' theory. I'm not totally sold on it.
To this day, I still firmly believe that it should have been Mecha Sonic piloting the egg mobile in Knuckles' story instead of Egg Robo.

The thing about the master emerald is that sonic and Co could theoretically use it to go super form, it's just that

Thanks! I should really check out Ian's podcast more often. Sounds like he drops lots of lore nuggets.
To those who are curious as to the MK3 Mechagodzilla connection, first you must understand that the Mechagodzilla reference specifically refers to the first Mechagodzilla from the Showa Era, due to one of the traits being exclusive to Showa MG
First, both Showa MG and MK3 have this orange to yellow, glassy eye texture
Second, on both their knees and elbows are pads with spikes on them
And the biggest red flag is that MK3 seems to have, one of the most Showa Era things ever; f i n g e r g u n s, tiny holes at the fingertips that would shoot out missiles (for MG it's missiles, but it's probably bullets or lasers for MK3 due to him being a bit small) which is so wacky yet badass at the same time (this is also something only Showa Era MG has, any other MG after does not have finger guns, except for Ready Player One)
Just realized this was explained in Game Apologists video, feel bad rn
Ok so in the era of “Shadow” versions of characters (evil clones of the protag that serve as bosses) this is probably the best take imo. Cool lineage thing, seems not just an imitation, but an actively objectively stronger version of you, also makes much more sense lore wise than “ooooo this evil monster is mimicking you ooooo”
For people reading I’m not talking about shadow the hedgehog I’m talking about “Shadow” characters in general such as Shadow Link from the legend of Zelda series

I prefer to think mecha's chest thing is kinda like metal's chest, but can also be a storage compartment for chaos/super emeralds.
So cool how Mecha Sonic will come back in the IDW comics
the way that mecha sonic can turn super thanks to the master emerals is very similar to how Neo Metal Sonic did in the comics. Maybe Neo is mark 4

I can't remember when but I heard that the Sonic 2 orange-eyed one was called "Robo-Sonic"
i like the idea of their name inconsistency's being canon too, eggman just cant remember what he named them
He also shoots beams out of his chest orb. I have seen orbs like this throughout many games, never to indicate an eyeball.
The Silver Sonic was meant to look damaged because he had fought Sonic during the events of Sonic 2 and this was their second and final battle
cool video! I love the way you say "1990's."
It's like "Nanteen nantees"
Mecha Sonic is the best metal copy imo, really gives you the terminator vibe.
The first one feels like a prototype for Silver Sonic (Sonic 2), There is only one Mecha in all our hearts!
