@@Larry Ahh yes I've just seen it. Snivley Vs. Grimer sounds like a great idea. I want to cover more Fleetway villains soon and Grimer might well be one of them.

That inciterator scene where Sonic asks Mecha to take his hand looks like it's a direct reference to the Sonic OVA. The final scene with Metal in that is very similar, he's slipping into a lava pit and Sonic tries to grab his hand only to have his slapped away, They even have a weird mind link going on in that too where Metal is feeling Sonic's emotions much like how Sonic was feeling Mecha's in this comic.
@@epicbanana3669 Yes it's a good parallel and a juxtaposition of the original scene. It shows how far Mecha has come as a character, willing to take the hand of his once enemy because he wants to be more than his programming. I should also point out earlier in the IDW comics Sonic offers Metal his hand in a gesture of peace and Metal swats it away, I think that scene is symbolic of what Mecha has become and what Metal could become if he ever were to get past his hatred of Sonic.
"The value of one's existence isn't determined by successes and failures. Both are fleeting and impermanent". "What truly matters is having the courage to keep moving forward". One of the very last lines of Scrapnik Island, and possibly my favourite quote to ever come out of this series.
That's quite nice, yet I can't help think of a serious moment when two people are talking and one trying to offer life advice quoting that, the other asking where it came from, and the answer being, "A Sonic the Hedgehog comic."
I didn’t know IDW referenced SMBZ with the “I’ll Crush You!” line, but it is the most fantastic thing I never knew I absolutely needed and I’m fan girling so hard cus SMBZ was my childhood
Literally making me buy the comics, I remember finishing SMBZ before I even knew English right, and Mecha going "I'LL CRUSH YOU" is honestly a core memory from those Newgrounds dwelling days. If Mario ever references Mario's Castle Calamity in official media I honestly will just perish on the spot
What's funny is it's also a reference to Dragon Ball as Mecha Sonic has has been tied to the voice of Cooler which has informed much of his online personality and mannerisims ranging from SMBZ and animations featuring him afterwards.
@@deltagearadvanced5140 to be fair if it’s a reference to SMBZ, and that in of itself is a parody on dragonball, I don’t think it quite takes a VA to link the two, but that is pretty funny nonetheless
14:08 Let me tell you this took inspiration from the ending of Sonic OVA too, Sonic tried to save Metal Sonic but Metal refused and said "There is only one Sonic", but instead on Scrapnik Island, Sonic saved Mecha and this made me overjoyed!
Same thing happened in the Archie comics adaption of the OVA. Only difference was the execution, and that his 'heart' survived long enough to get transplanted into a new body, and he ended up becoming Shard.
@@JoshRioluthat is a bit different as Shard had to hold back the lava from killing Sonic and Tails to give them time to run away and survive but he needed to sacrifice himself to save them while metal in the OVA didn't really do it to save Sonic but seems to reject his hand more so because there can only be one, as he said himself with "there can only be one Sonic the hedgehog" right before dying.
@@L47Le because it was revealed (relatively recently) info regarding Nazo by Sega, they confirme Nazo to be an early concept for Super Sonic in Sonic X.
Turbo Mecha Sonic was discarded from Alvin Earthworm/Mark Haynes and was replaced by Metallix much like how Mecha Sonic was replaced by Metal Sonic. The OG Fan-Made version was left to destroyed and left to rot while the OG Canon version was salvaged and resurrected. In a way, the roles have been reversed. It sucks that my favorite character is getting replaced by someone who is 100% weaker than him based off of what the creator has said and not thought about.
You gotta acknowledge how this Is a Love Letter to all the Metal/Mecha Sonic Fans, From the SMBZ References, to the OVA Callbacks (The Knuckles Cowboy Hat) just makes this way better.
I find it funny how the first Scrapnik was a Caterkiller Coconuts, mainly because to me they're the most annoying badniks, both combined into one Caterkiller is.. well.. Caterkiller And Coconuts always threw a coconut the frame before I could kill him, damaging me instead. This fusion is truly the ultimate badnik.
Not to mention when I played Sonic 1 for the first time, it really made me so infuriated that the Caterkiller is one of the most difficult badniks to defeat with you have to do a perfectly timed roll rather than just jump on it which instead causes its Caterkiller body to detach itself and damaging you in the process
I would love for a return to Scrapnik Island in the future. Maybe Eggman ends up finding the island and tries to destroy it after seeing how nice and peaceful his once ferocious robots have become and Sonic, Tails, and Mecha have to defend the island.
Mecha sonic vs metal sonic is something I’d pay to see. Though I imagine that fight would end with mecha captured. On the bright side though we’d get a fully repaired mecha sonic.
I think he would have an aneurysm after finding another rogue E-100. That line constantly produces robots that have a change of heart or break their programming. From gamma to omega. It’s a wonder eggman even got to omega before giving up in the first place.
If there was any character that changed my thoughts of them the most, It has to be Mecha Sonic. I use to love Super Mario Bros Z. It was the very first fan series I watch and I love Mecha Sonic in it. And when I discovered his origins of Mecha Sonic is actually Metal Sonic, I thought it was really cool. However as time went on, I was pretty convinced that people only like Mecha Sonic because of SMBZ. I've seen him being compared to Metal, People use the SMBZ version, I even went back to where Mecha Sonic made his appearance in the Sonic Franchise and thought he was pretty meh when comparing him to his SMBZ appearance. But after looking at Game Apologist's and Johnny Vector's videos, I started seeing Mecha as something nostalgic to others. A character that stuck out to people. Which did kinda reflect on how I see certain Mario enemies and how they stuck out to me. And then Scrapnik Island changed everything, Mecha Sonic had me hooked in everything, his appearance in Issue 1, his flashback in Issue 2, To his dialogue in Issue 3, and his Motivation in Issue 4. His entire view and perspective on life is what really hit me the most. I use to believe that Life was all about success and nothing more. I tried to tell my family members how felt about life, but they didn't give the answer I was looking for. And when I saw the Sonic and Mecha's perspectives clashed, I finally got what I was looking for. The Answer to how I saw life. And the ending helped it even more with Mecha starting a brand new perspective living for the future. And I follow suit as well. So... yeah I had quite a history with Mecha Sonic. And honestly, I'm glad I did. I was able to see something new with each time I got to see him. And Scrapnik Island not only gave me my favorite iterations of Mecha Sonic, but also one I can truly relate to. Props for the IDW Team for resurrecting this Metallic Hog and giving him a chance to become a character.
I think that the scene where Mecha smacks away Sonic's hand is also a reference to Sonic OVA, a sonic bot smacking away the offer to get saved by Sonic and letting themselves meet a fiery end. And that Sonic actually saving Mecha shows how Sonic may regret letting Metal die then, and won't let something like it happen again.
If Eggman were to do that, that would mea-OH MY GOD! WE WOULD GET METAL SONIC VS MECHA SONIC! Ok here is how I think it would go down. Eggman would discover the island with Metal Sonic and as they explore the remains of the destroyed Death Egg, he would find something he made awhile back but wasn't able to put into action. He tells Metal Sonic to stand guard as he takes the mcguffin. He tries to take the mcguffin, but he's having trouble doing so. His progress would stop to a halt as Mecha Knuckles rushes in to attack Eggman, but is intervened in the nick of time by Metal Sonic. They take their fighting elsewhere, and Eggman hurries to take the mcguffin. The Scrapniks arrive and proceed to surround Eggman, ready to attack if Eggman doesn't get away from the mcguffin he's trying to take. After Eggman stalls for time, Metal Sonic comes back blasting though the horde of Scrapniks at supersonic speeds with his arm impaled through the chest of a destroyed Mecha Knuckles. Metal lands beside Eggman, impales his other arm through Mecha Knuckles' chest, and rips the destroyed bot in half. The Scrapniks are shook to their circuits, but quickly put themselves together. A fight insues and Eggman instructs Metal to defend him while he takes the mcguffin. After awhile, Metal Sonic is getting beat up by Mecha and the Scrapniks while doing his best to defend Eggman. Metal temporarily knocks Mecha Sonic MK-2 away but proceeds to be dogpiled by a bunch of Scrapniks. While that happens Eggman is being held at gunpoint by E-117 Sigma. It looks like Eggman is doomed, but he then tells Metal Sonic to stop defending and engage attack mode. Metal Sonic pulls a Neo from the Matrix by blasting away the Scrapniks on him. Metal knocks away Sigma away from the Doctor and Eggman finishes obtaining the mcguffin. Eggman tells Metal that he is done here...but Metal isn't. He instructs Metal to "Take out the trash" and Metal Sonic proceeds to slaughter the Scrapniks. Metal Sonic is about to finish off some of the Scrapniks, but Mecha Sonic MK-2 swoops in to save them. Metal Sonic is now annoyed so he decides to end Mecha Sonic MK-2 right then and there while Mecha Sonic MK-2 is distracted telling Sigma to bring the remaining Scrapniks to the fixed Egg Carrier while he deals with Metal Sonic. Mecha Sonic MK-2 plans to blow the place up with him and Metal still in it. Metal and Mecha Sonic MK-2 proceed to brawl 1 on 1. After awhile Mecha Sonic MK-2 is pinned down and Metal is about finish him off, but he is shot at the back of his head by E-117 Sigma with a blaster of a fallen Eggrobo. Sigma tells Mecha that the Scrapniks need him and that he will be the one to stay instead of Mecha Sonic MK-2. Sigma tells Mecha Sonic MK-2 to get to Sonic and Tails, they will be the one to help stop Eggman. Metal is pissed so he spins through Sigma's chest. Mecha Sonic MK-2 leaves while Sigma, at his dying moments, holds down Metal and blows up the place. A beat up Mecha Sonic MK-2 and the remaining Scrapniks were able to escape on the Egg Carrier. After the the destruction has ended, Metal Sonic emerges from the rubble of the blown up remains of the abandoned Death Egg. He survived! A beat up Metal Sonic then proceeds to fly back to Eggman. The end
Just hearing that "I'LL CRUSH YOU" was pure music to my ears. Now, I remember watching some smbz episodes when I was a kid, but I never really grew up with it. It now evolved into my favourite anime despite it being a sprite animation, and any work with Mecha Sonic I always look out for an "I'LL CRUSH YOU"
Scrapnik Island is probably our favorite miniseries from IDW so far. Really hope it gets revisted one day either in a sequel or something with a annual.
While I did decide to go ahead and watch your analysis and Game Apologist’s analysis of the comic, I’m still definitely picking up the full volume of this mini-saga in August. I’m a recent newcomer to the IDW Comics (I haven’t read any of the Fleetway or Archie comics though), and this is one of my new favorite volumes made by IDW. The fact that Mecha Sonic now has official 2D art of his design is awesome. Plus his new Scrapnik design with the rust and cape is just as cool as his original design. Honestly, his story is extremely touching and I definitely wasn’t expecting to tear up near the end. I’m glad him along with the other Scrapniks were given a happy ending. Then E117 SIGMA is also a really well written newcomer. Acting as a sort of father-like figure for the other Scrapniks. Even when Mecha goes rogue, he blames himself for not being able to free Mecha of his old programming and takes responsibility for it. He definitely deserves to be placed with OMEGA and GAMMA as the best E-Series robots. Plus he’s British which is fun. Overall, this was a fantastic comic and shoutout to Daniel Barnes and the others who worked on this. They did an excellent job. I can’t wait to pickup the full volume this August.
I really like the scrapnik island mini series because of how it gave closure and reintroduced characters like Mecha sonic and knuckles, also was a eye spy for previous egg man creations. I also loved the references to other media too like Smbz. I also like to note that it’s cool to see Mecha s cyclops eye, if his eye on his stomach is an eye that means Mecha has a full pair. Great video!
I have several things to mention here; I'm so glad you covered this. Scrapnik Island is a fantastic idea for a story (in fact, I toyed with that concept back during my old fanfiction days). It's so cool to see a peak at what happens with Robotnik's older models, and this is a great source of closure. (Although I feel like the IDW comics, while canon now, can be retconned at any time.) I hope to see these guys come back someday and find a new life, and maybe even take side against their former master. Mecha Sonic vs Metal Sonic, the idea writes itself! Also, I don't blame you for not bringing up SMBZ originally. As cool as it was, it is still fanfiction at the end of the day. So it shouldn't be filled in with "official" media, especially since, imo, Mecha doesn't need fanfiction lore to be "cool." Also, for anyone who made it this far down, please join me in prayer that Jakks Pacific will someday make a toy of this Mecha Sonic
Yeah, they say the idw comics are canon, but until we get solid references to them in the actual games, either through characters unique to idw, or through events, like maybe in a future game we still get shadow flashing back to his failures during the metal virus arc. Something.
It reallyu shows that all Mecha wants is the approval for his usefulness, but unfortunately, his efforts still weren't enough for Eggman and was abandoned. Thankfully, he now has a place to accept him and can finally stop pleasing.
The idw comics unironically made me cry multiple timew, and this series was one of the hardest BIG FEELINGS story to get through. Absolutely fantastic deepening of the character and lore of the badniks and answering the question of "why do so many badniks turn on eggman..." and the answer is all of them can. that rules. Anyway tho idw comics are my absolute favorite sonic anything outside of the games, and i think they represent all the development, trauma, maturity, and resentment that has been built up or resolved in the games. It makes it feel like a real world with a real, on-going history. People complain about sonic, but i think its because they dont...relly look beyond the surface? Theres a lot of sonic's character that is represented in the things he Doesnt say, in his expressions and actions, rather than explicit dialogue. Another thing is like...hes changed! Hes older, and has been through a shitton of garbage. Hes not the same spunky, sassy little ball he was as a kid, and has matured from his more impulsive, rash younger teen self. But hes still impatient, hes still sassy, and he is flawed in many ways that honestly have only gotten worse as hes gotten older (for example not processing anything emotionally and not asking for help). I think like..people need to understand that what we see in idw is these characters growing up, finally. And i know that can be hard for some to appreciate or recognize, but its the way you continue to tell great, meaningful stories in such a long lasting franchise. Anyway i'll get off my box Love idw sonic comics, love that theyre canon to the games, i really hope we see more characters crossover to being playable like tangle did in the mobile game.
The comic sounds amazing!!! It really feels like the whole focus is on the Scrapniks instead of Sonic and Tails who in my opinion kind of act as the link to the plot. Mecha Sonic is a gigantic welcome here! And the SMBZ reference! Never watched the series, but know of the “I’ll crush you!!!” line which itself is legendary! Never read this comic and yet I rate it 10/10 for how amazing it sounds and the fact Mecha Sonic is back as he is a fan favourite (mine included since his design is so amazing!)
I’m so glad we got to see more of Mecha in official works. He always seemed so cool among the Sonic doppelgänger bots. Never mind that he was in one of my favorite games of all time. Before seeing this, I had the thought quite often that No Eggman creations outside of a select few could be trusted or good willed. I’m glad this comic exists to prove there’s good in even some of the most dangerous and violent characters.
I occasionally get asked this so I'll share the answer now. I commissioned a couple of avatars from a buddy and asked them to give me a Flinstones/Jetsons kinda look. Hence the nose.
It’s just.. sad seeing mecha go from peaceful and forgiving to ptsd induced violence from being beaten by sonic and knuckles. Knowing he isn’t going to be helped by dr robotnic, heck probably not even mr tinker! (If he WOULD have known who that was)
@@mobgabriel1767I honestly think if they revisit scrapnik island in the future that they should bring belle. I really think it would work well with her.
@@Red_RyryI hope they do as well, there is so much potential ,especially with mecha sonic. Him meeting eggman again , him meeting belle , him meeting metal sonic and possible fight , him being repaired to he peak once again. Eggman just seeing the idea of scrapnik island would be great , maybe even a full flashback to his creation mecha sonic. There is so much that can be done with scrapniks.
I tried to get into the IDW Transformers comics back in the day but personally found alot of the storylines abit too reliant on many other issues they were selling, much like the old marvel approach which is fine but at the time I couldn't afford multiple issues of different comics, not to mention I am nowhere near any comic shops so I have to get it all online. Plus IDW themselves aren't exactly the greatest of companies out there, that said I am intrigued hearing that they tie more directly to the actual canon of the games. That was one of the best things I love about the Fleetway comics back in the day, the fact that yes the stories were their own adaptations of the games but having the actual Badniks, the Zones and other recognizable elements from the games really helped me appreciate them more. Even from all these screenshots I can see how much the writers and artists respect the legacy of the games so I'll definitely have to give these IDW Sonic comics a shot. IDW might be a favourite of mine but I'm willing to overlook that and give these comics the respect they deserve.
I love the IDW comics and the way they portray Mecha because I wasn't around the appropriate him but recently I have found him more interesting than metal.
the end scene with mecha Sonic falling in a pit of fire and sonic extending his hand reminds me a lot of the end of the Sonic ova movie where metal sonic is destroyed by lave a sonic trying to save him
I've only ever seen the 1st issue of the comic Hell, it's the only one I owned, but I loved it. I remember flipping through the pages and being greeted with some random art that would sometimes pop up. I wish I owned more of the IDW comics because I just find them so damn cool!
One of the things I like about mecha here, is that since I bet we won't ever get a happy ending with metal sonic, at least we can can get one with one of the robotic sonics in the form of mecha.
14:23 I think this was a reference to the Sonic OVA's ending where something similar happens but with Metal Sonic and he actually does burn up and die in Planet Freedoms core
I’m not really sure how I feel about the comics being canon. For me, what made archie and fleetway cool was that they were able to branch out and do new different things with sonic (for better and for worse). Since these comics are canon, I feel like the writing team won’t be able to take big risks or do wacky cool new ideas anymore now that they have to constrain it all into the lines of what’s “considered” canon, things like Enerjak or Ultra Sonic just won’t be able to happen anymore. I think IDW sonic as a whole feels a little strange to me, the writing feels.. twitter-ish, if that makes sense, there is a lot of “uwu cinnamon bun” moments that I don’t really vibe with. I also don’t like the excuse people give when they tone down the violence saying “it’s a kid comic they can’t do that!” when Archie and fleetway were able to push the line a lot further. They tried to make things darker in the metal virus saga but it felt a little artificial/melodramatic, at least I think so. We don’t need to talk about shadow. I’m not trashing on IDW, I do like what they’re doing, but that’s just my criticisms of it. Archie had a lot of problems, mostly the melodrama in early issues (and I’d argue that Idw does melodrama too). This has nothing to do with mecha sonic or this awesome spin off comic, but I just wanted to say something about this cause I’ve had no where else to say it
It should be noted that literary nothing changed in terms of how IDW is written as its meant to fit the games story since issue 1. Stuff like ultra sonic and finitivus were never happening
@@charismaentertainer1657 I’m just saying I don’t particularly like it being that way, it makes it sort of bland in my opinion. They have made some cool stuff with what they are allowed to do and what they have, but it makes me feel like a paper Mario situation where they’re very limited on what they’re allowed to write and introduce. (although paper Mario is an extreme example) This also canonically makes shadow edgy Vegeta, which wouldn’t be a big issue if again, it wasn’t canon.
@@gracekim1998 I’m using them as an example of how unique archie was, I wasn’t saying they should literally bring back people like enerjak, you’ve misinterpreted what I was saying.
So much of this comic is inspired by the sonic anime ova; the sharing a mind, the swatting of sonic's hand as mecha falls into a super heated pit. I love it!!!
One thing about this comic is it’s really muddying the waters between modern and classic sonic and eggman. Like they are trying to make them two distinct worlds, because whenever mecha here has a flashback involving eggman, he’s in his modern design with his modern jacket and outfit, when realistically he would have been wearing his classic outfit, which almost suggests he always wore the modern outfit, but then you have the egg robos in this comic which are based on classic robotniks design and outfit. I don’t understand it
I think this summary of the miniseries was very good, but maybe underplayed a bit the emotional journey of mecha a bit... i woulsve liked to see more discussion of the nature of why the old directive was brought back or the impact the scene where mecha talked for the first time had... but i guess it IS just a 15 minute summary to anyone reading this - if you cant do it physically please purchase the comics digitally if youre interested! they are absolutely wonderful!
14:14 the hand smack is a reference to the sonic ova where sonic was going to save metal sonic but smack sonic hand and metal dying from the leave and saying "there can only be one sonic"
not long ago i checked out a sonic fangame called sonic smackdown that was... really good. for some reason mecha was in the cast which i was NOT sad about. oh he wasn't the weirdest inclusion because there was also balan from balan wonderland but mecha did have the smbz voicelines and personality
I find it intresting that mecha sonic becomes a kind of good guy at the end of the comic; And the fact that we see sonic cry?! Sure, it's "Mecha's". But still! we see him cry in the comics again after archie!
Mecha Sonic's character arc here is so so wonderfully done!! Mecha Knuckles is also a refreshing sight and they've done him well, too. The new inclusion of Sigma is so cute and compelling, too! (And yes, I love him being British!!! 😅💚) Whether or not the IDW comics & games all end up taking place in the same timeline after all, I'm positive this is what the Mecha's end up being like. It just fits so so well. I also truly think Tails will later end up being able to "repair" them so to speak to their original bodies, if they so want, which I think they will. I do think there's other scrapniks though that will prefer the way they are currently, more or less, and everyone will respect that, too, of course. Thank you so much for covering this!!
I've only read the first 12 issues of the comic, and the 30th anniversary special Seasons of Chaos, and I really like them. Once I get more room for more comics then I will collect the Zombot saga next.
While Mecha isn’t my fav eggman robot Mecha is just barely behind he has one of the best designs for any sonic character this gives him just so much more depth and just SMBZ man
14:28 this really reminds me of both OVA and a fan comic for Shadow’s end in Adventure 2, where the Sonic-like character rejects Sonic’s help and wants to seal their fate themselves
I don't know if this is related to the video, which is great as always, by the way. But I've always found it weird, and even jarring that Dr Robotnik has the ability/skill to create almost fully sentient robots, with the ability to hold grudges and even seek revenge (like Neo Metal Sonic, for example, on a mission to obtain ultimate power in order to defeat Sonic, even copying part of Chaos DNA). Certainly interesting, if you ask me.
Also, I think that in 14:10, that scene could be a reference to the end of Metal Sonic in the Sonic OVA. Where Metal sonic also hangs on to a pit that lava is burning below. In the OVA, Metal Sonic accepts his fate and does not get the help of Sonic. But, Mecha Sonic was different, instead of paying for the troubles he caused like Metal, he instead accepts Sonic's help, surviving and living for tomorrow.
IDW are the same guys that made the original IDW Transformers comics as well as the reboot of the IDW Transformers comics. This comic studio is awesome!
Im in the same spot as you, sonic 3 is my favorite sonic game, a play it a lot, when I was a kid, and yeah, my favorite boss was him, I remember even doing some glitch with the debug mode, to fight with him on his super form as sonic. And the super mario bros Z series make my like him even more. Is nice to hear this comics are canon. This gives me a little hope of him coming back into te games at some point, and knowing his a good guy now gives a little plus, maybe helping sonic and his friends some day? Great video.
Something i feel like is a missed inconsistency is how in Mecha Sonic's Flashbacks, the characters he sees, especially Dr. Eggman, use their modern designs. I think it would only be fitting that Mecha saw Eggman as he was while he was active.
Yeah I noticed that too, like it’s fine if he has the modern body shape I’m fine with that, but he’s wearing the adventure era and onward outfit when he should be wearing the same thing that the eggrobos also on this island were wearing. It just feels like it’s part of some agenda to further separate the worlds of classic and modern sonic.
Scrapnik island's mecha sonic is such a great concept, a self aware forgotten machine that with a P.T.S.D triggering scenario, went from a peaceful robot that has abandoned violence, to a full on f*cking killing machine. (btw sigma giving tails a pat is adorable)
11:25 - 13:13 I know that line comes from Cooler in the DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi games, but Neo Metal Sonic has also said that line in Sonic Heroes in the Metal Overlord Boss Fight. Given the fact that Sonic Heroes came out in 2003, while DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 1 came out in 2005 about two years after Sonic Heroes' release.
Sigma repair grindset lol. IDW are the Sonic comics I want to read the most, the Scrapniks are clever little faction that I want Sonic Team to borrow for the games. Speaking of which, the blending of Sonic canons will be more damaging than helpful. Sonic Team has shown little care for the material made outside its walls, and they did not always do the best job of managing their own lore. Same with the comics, I like that they follow the games more closely but sometimes they come up with good ideas and takes that contradict established game canon. The merging of storylines across Sonic media is going to be messy and I think it will be limiting to each specific branch.
4:14 if you look at the wall, you can see that it looks like level tiles from chemical plant in sonic 2, this is because the death egg in sth2 reused assets from cpz
I’d like to see the characters from this miniseries return in need of repairs due to rust damage and for Belle to repair them. I also want to see them reject an offer from Eggman to return to him if they encounter one another again and for them to be able to either live peacefully or be heroes helping fight against their creator.
9:56 Tails is carrying a Sega Menacer!

Only difference was the execution, and that his 'heart' survived long enough to get transplanted into a new body, and he ended up becoming Shard.
yeah, considering i knew how the last time went in the OVA, i was mighty horrified until well, he got actually saved this time
@@JoshRioluthat is a bit different as Shard had to hold back the lava from killing Sonic and Tails to give them time to run away and survive but he needed to sacrifice himself to save them while metal in the OVA didn't really do it to save Sonic but seems to reject his hand more so because there can only be one, as he said himself with "there can only be one Sonic the hedgehog" right before dying.
mecha looks absolutely badass and that callback to the sonic ova at the end was incredible. modern sonic comics have rocked
Mecha Sonic and Nazo: Shaking Hands to: Getting Treatment From The Fans then the Actual Creators
Two Sonic legends elevated by Flash series
Why nazo?

I find it funny how the first Scrapnik was a Caterkiller Coconuts, mainly because to me they're the most annoying badniks, both combined into one
Caterkiller is.. well.. Caterkiller
And Coconuts always threw a coconut the frame before I could kill him, damaging me instead.
This fusion is truly the ultimate badnik.
Haha yeah, the ultimate pest.
The scrap created from such a battle would birth new Scrapniks, and at least one would be a Egg Pawn headed one
Mark do a good job always
I think that the scene where Mecha smacks away Sonic's hand is also a reference to Sonic OVA, a sonic bot smacking away the offer to get saved by Sonic and letting themselves meet a fiery end. And that Sonic actually saving Mecha shows how Sonic may regret letting Metal die then, and won't let something like it happen again.
Imagine if Eggman discovered the island in a future issue
That'd be a fun idea actually. I wonder if his mere presence would trigger any PTSD in any of the scrapniks..?
@@JohnnyVector i just predicted a future issue, didn't i?
I hope he doesn't. He might try and recycle them.

Nice to see the best sonic robot make his grand return

Just hearing that line gives me Phantom Hype...
Love how there is a "Reference" to SMBZ
"I'LL CRUSH YOU !!"
I have several things to mention here;
I'm so glad you covered this. Scrapnik Island is a fantastic idea for a story (in fact, I toyed with that concept back during my old fanfiction days). It's so cool to see a peak at what happens with Robotnik's older models, and this is a great source of closure. (Although I feel like the IDW comics, while canon now, can be retconned at any time.)
I hope to see these guys come back someday and find a new life, and maybe even take side against their former master. Mecha Sonic vs Metal Sonic, the idea writes itself!
Also, I don't blame you for not bringing up SMBZ originally. As cool as it was, it is still fanfiction at the end of the day. So it shouldn't be filled in with "official" media, especially since, imo, Mecha doesn't need fanfiction lore to be "cool."
Also, for anyone who made it this far down, please join me in prayer that Jakks Pacific will someday make a toy of this Mecha Sonic
It's more or less an adaption of the concept from AoStH with the discarded Badniks.
Facts I've been wanting a Mecha Sonic figure forever it would be so badass
Yeah, they say the idw comics are canon, but until we get solid references to them in the actual games, either through characters unique to idw, or through events, like maybe in a future game we still get shadow flashing back to his failures during the metal virus arc. Something.
Mecha Sonic is the best Sonic Robot.
Change my mind.
You're right!
ok, put on this dome shaped helmet that has a face and teeth
IMO it metal sonic
This really does bring a tear to my eye, I'm happy that Mecha Sonic has reformed and now has a great lease on life.
Anyway i'll get off my box
Love idw sonic comics, love that theyre canon to the games, i really hope we see more characters crossover to being playable like tangle did in the mobile game.
I feel like if mecha sonic managed to pull off that mind swap with sonic we'd have a Superior Spiderman situation on our hands.
Absolutely loved Scrapnik Island. The fight between Mecha S&K with the glitchy PTSD flashback is probably my favorite scene out of any Sonic book.
I'd play a video game based on the scrapnik island. This is such an awesome story about one of my favorite characters.
Referenced super Mario, Bros Z in a comic. That’s awesome.
14:20 for me feels more like the end of Metal Sonic in the ova then falls into the lava.
Great video, man!
Glad you liked the miniseries! :D
This is the best treatment mecha Sonic has ever had in the series
I occasionally get asked this so I'll share the answer now. I commissioned a couple of avatars from a buddy and asked them to give me a Flinstones/Jetsons kinda look. Hence the nose.

Great video once again Vector. Thanks for putting these out they help me get through boring night shifts
the end scene with mecha Sonic falling in a pit of fire and sonic extending his hand reminds me a lot of the end of the Sonic ova movie where metal sonic is destroyed by lave a sonic trying to save him
14:08 is a call back to sonic Ova movie with metal sonic where sonic tries to save metal but metal refuses and dies " there can only be one sonic"
I've only ever seen the 1st issue of the comic Hell, it's the only one I owned, but I loved it. I remember flipping through the pages and being greeted with some random art that would sometimes pop up. I wish I owned more of the IDW comics because I just find them so damn cool!
I read every scrapnik island book and I really enjoyed them. These were my first sonic comics I read
One of the things I like about mecha here, is that since I bet we won't ever get a happy ending with metal sonic, at least we can can get one with one of the robotic sonics in the form of mecha.
I want to see more of the Scrapniks now! I find them so interesting!
Amazing vid btw!
14:23 I think this was a reference to the Sonic OVA's ending where something similar happens but with Metal Sonic and he actually does burn up and die in Planet Freedoms core
Didn't Metal Overlord also said *"I'LL CRUSH YOU!"* too?
The big dude from Sonic Heroes? I'm not sure tbh!
@@JohnnyVector Yes he does. It's the Super Sonic fight when he throws an Egg Fleet at them
I’m not really sure how I feel about the comics being canon.
@@hornie_pie_7861 um why are you bring up Archie concepts they can’t use?😅
@@gracekim1998 I’m using them as an example of how unique archie was, I wasn’t saying they should literally bring back people like enerjak, you’ve misinterpreted what I was saying.

This makes me love Mecha Sonic even more
These are honestly great. That was my favorite robot sonic, and I love seeing it get some attention like this.
Return of the king!!
Haha you're too kind
I don’t understand it
I think this summary of the miniseries was very good, but maybe underplayed a bit the emotional journey of mecha a bit... i woulsve liked to see more discussion of the nature of why the old directive was brought back or the impact the scene where mecha talked for the first time had... but i guess it IS just a 15 minute summary
to anyone reading this - if you cant do it physically please purchase the comics digitally if youre interested! they are absolutely wonderful!
14:14 the hand smack is a reference to the sonic ova where sonic was going to save metal sonic but smack sonic hand and metal dying from the leave and saying "there can only be one sonic"
I need to see Mecha and the Scrapnicks meet Belle Tinkerer.
not long ago i checked out a sonic fangame called sonic smackdown that was... really good. for some reason mecha was in the cast which i was NOT sad about. oh he wasn't the weirdest inclusion because there was also balan from balan wonderland but mecha did have the smbz voicelines and personality
Happy to see you cover this since Scrapnik Island is my favorite of the IDW miniseries. The writing, art, and coloring were all perfect!

I really hope we see the scrapniks in more sonic media
Love the idw comics there so polished and entertaining 😄
14:30 I think that was inspired by sonic ova
I find it intresting that mecha sonic becomes a kind of good guy at the end of the comic; And the fact that we see sonic cry?! Sure, it's "Mecha's". But still! we see him cry in the comics again after archie!
Im not a hardcore sonic fan and have not read any idw, but i saw this comic then I loved it because of mecha sonic having robes
Good god he’s back. And it’s cannon. This is the happiest 5:00 A.M of my life.
Mecha Sonic's character arc here is so so wonderfully done!! Mecha Knuckles is also a refreshing sight and they've done him well, too. The new inclusion of Sigma is so cute and compelling, too! (And yes, I love him being British!!! 😅💚)
Whether or not the IDW comics & games all end up taking place in the same timeline after all, I'm positive this is what the Mecha's end up being like.
7:01 his character designer apparently as the hat and glasses came from a scrapped design for Sonic 3 seen in concept art
God I hope mecha and the other scrapniks show up again in the comic
I don't know if this is related to the video, which is great as always, by the way. But I've always found it weird, and even jarring that Dr Robotnik has the ability/skill to create almost fully sentient robots, with the ability to hold grudges and even seek revenge (like Neo Metal Sonic, for example, on a mission to obtain ultimate power in order to defeat Sonic, even copying part of Chaos DNA). Certainly interesting, if you ask me.
Robotnik also has the ability to build a machine that can transfer someone's consciousness, which is just a level of smarts that is off the charts.
Yes great point. In all honesty that's probably what the scene is referencing, it completely slipped my mind. I need to watch the OVA again!
So... Mecha Sonic... decided to... Live and Learn?
He also quoted the Neutral end song from Shadow the Edgehog.
Idw Sonic was the only thing that kept me a sonic fan pre movie and frontiers era
Imagine if Mark 0,1,3, and Tails Doll are also on the island wanting revenge
When the writer for your Sonic comic does the adventure pose you know it’s gonna be good.
I really hope that this Mecha Sonic gets all fixed up and become one of Sonic's most reliable ally, as well as other Scrapniks
IDW are the same guys that made the original IDW Transformers comics as well as the reboot of the IDW Transformers comics. This comic studio is awesome!
IDW's story gets merged with the games as Ian Flynn is now writing the games starting with frontiers.
I might not be a huge Mecha sonic fan but I'm glad they didn't just kill him off I'd like to see more of him
4:51 I legitimately thought that you were talking about the staff
Scrapnik island's mecha sonic is such a great concept, a self aware forgotten machine that with a P.T.S.D triggering scenario, went from a peaceful robot that has abandoned violence, to a full on f*cking killing machine. (btw sigma giving tails a pat is adorable)
1:01 NO WAY!!!
10:34 in one of the panels one of badniks are doing the think mark think from omni man
Do you think you might talk about some of the IDW original cases, like Tango The Lemur, Whispering The Wolf, Rough and Tumble?
4:14 if you look at the wall, you can see that it looks like level tiles from chemical plant in sonic 2, this is because the death egg in sth2 reused assets from cpz
Scrolled past the vid just to come back to check if I was subscribed, luckily I was
I think this gives us the first piece of official Mecha Sonic artwork since the S3&K sprites.
Can you do a video on Sonic the comic's least known villain, Captain Plunder and maybe even discuss his relationship with Cream the Rabbit.
I've been wanting to cover Plunder for a while. I'm planning on covering a few Fleetway villains soon. Plunder may well be one of them.
I’d like to see the characters from this miniseries return in need of repairs due to rust damage and for Belle to repair them. I also want to see them reject an offer from Eggman to return to him if they encounter one another again and for them to be able to either live peacefully or be heroes helping fight against their creator.
It reminds me of the scene from the Sonic the Hedgehog movie (1999) where Sonic tried to save Metal Sonic.
