They were gonna have to do it at somepoint, most engagements for 4th generation fighters occurs in BVR battles :/

Gajin like WG is growing out of their pants. I'm sure you might want to use AIM54's at 25km, but that's AIM7/AIM120 range. AIM54s were never intended to engage rapidly maneuvering targets.
@@cgilleybsw The turn rate on the Phoenix is only 16Gs so no it wasn't designed for sharp turns. That being said pilots aren't used to facing something with constant propulsion that maintains its rate of turn. If people realize pulling lead won't work and instead go for a last minute Jink then a lot less people will die to the AIM54. Only someone with a poor understanding of missiles thinks anything in game is point and click. Every missile has its limits.
Well when 5th Gen fighters come out, missiles will be covering the battle field

@@StoneCoolds My small group goes there for high repetition practice when we have limited time or to learn a new plane, helps commit things to muscle memory and work kinks out of our control bindings.
@@Checklist_STT you are right, because of how chaotic, fast, and arcady GS is, it ends being good for those keybindings fine adjustments and quick muscle memory on new modules, i do the same when im learning a new module
The only problem with GS, is that it gives DCS a bad reputation, most people that had hated DCS multiplayer is because they have go to GS thinking is the gem of DCS and end feeling like they are playing war thunder lol 😆

the reason the flap thingys go away when in mach is because using the elevons instead is safer and faster and easier to control. not to mention that when the wings sweep those same surfaces dont have the same effect, or may actually be blocked from deploying by some other part of the plane.
When the wings are extended, the aircraft needs extra help rolling. Even with the spoilers, F-14 pilots kick the rudder to help it roll by creating more lift on the wing that is pushed forward by the yaw of the aircraft while decreasing the lift on the opposite wing.
Also, when planes are going fast enough, having a surface with a longer moment arm from the rolling axis can over torsion the wing, so using the elevons which have a a shorter rolling arm may help alleviate that
And when swept, you're effectively a Delta Wing, which... that's be where their ailerons are! (basically, ok not quite but shh).
Which I believe is the key selling point of the F-14: wide spread for maximum lift, providing better takeoff and landing, yet swept it's like a delta so a higher top(gun) end speed -- and fuel efficiency _at_ top speed I'd imagine.
I wonder if we'll ever get AWACs, either player or AI controlled, with the ability to radar identify targets to a much longer range, while also getting kill assists for all targets they highlight. Also, if the AWAC gets taken out, FF becomes much more likely.

@@gamingbythesea9990 I mean useful as there are no bombers at top tier, so bomber pilots can only base bomb in attacker/fighter jets then run to base.
I think AWACS can be useful for spotting targets, allowing them to be locked by fighters, datalink style
It’s possible but atm maps are too small for awacs ,even some ec maps are small for awacs
So incredible that we are at this stage already in War Thunder...can't wait to see the Mig-29 next Patch and other Gen 4 stuff! Seems like I have to suffer again from the F9F-5 up to the F-14 ^^

I remember watching you and Baron back in the day speculating about ground forces coming out. Going over the ground target models when they updated them, and wondering what planes would get added to the old 20 tier tech tree system next..... We have all come so far since then.
Phly, not using the spoilers is indeed a feature of the Tomcat's swept wings! Beyond 57 degrees of sweep (out of 68 degrees of flight sweep) the spoilers do not engage. The wings are of course fully swept in mach. I don't know why this feature existed; I might speculate that the sweep interferes with the spoiling effect (either in angle or CoM leverage) or the swept spoilers are too close to the tailerons, or it could be something else entirely.
It's a small detail but good on Gaijin for modeling it.
With the wings fully swept the aircraft is essentially a delta wing like the Mirage

Honestly phly has some of the best merch on UA-cam. Because other UA-camrs make merch that you don’t want wear in public, but phly’s merch actually looks like normal clothing and makes me confident to wear it in public.

Ailerons would seriously disrupt airflow over the horizontals, with the wings back. Since the -14 is essentially a delta after MACH, controls required a logical shift in location.
The use of spoilers were necessary as when full sweep the ailerons would be pinned.

AIM 54 Phoenix has a terminal phase active radar. Once it gets close enough it will just basically find its own way home. No need to "paint" the target all the way to impact.

They still haven't fixed the BMP-1's 9M14 missile.
The missile is jam proof, but in the game it's being jammed by jammers.

The reason it doesn’t lock well looking down was because the f-14 had a notch filter which filtered targets moving under a certain speed so ground clutter was not detected. When looking up though this filter turn off

Phly, you should use the B-scope radar (square one) instead of the PPI. Much easier to see targets, especially at close range.

Just relating this story because Top gun meme... Listening to Hornfischers book 'Last stand of the Tin Can Sailors" one pilot did something like this. But instead of buzzing the carrier. After running out of ammo, bombs, machine guns etc. He flew UPSIDE DOWN with the canopy open over the bridge of a Japanese cruiser while firing his .38 caliber side arm at the ship. He said he could see the officers in the pilot house/bridge staring at him as he went by.
I love the fact that the G limit for F14A is 7.4G and on the first flight fellar is pulling casual 12+G
Likely waaay less with 6 Phoenix, he couldn't even land back on the carrier in that config.
Actually that's just an artificial number. the Tomcat can pull more the just 7.5.
@@s3viking214 Not based on manuals I have seen or even DCS you would rip the wings clean off. G limiting is dependant on so many factors wing loading, air speed, fuel load even temperature.
However there are cases with an F-14 exceeding that, but not 11 and 12g like we see here. It would make the game so much more enjoyable if players could rip wings and damage the airframe by pulling too much G but no players like to afterburn and pull 14g...
@@lukewhitehouse4103 yes. I should have been more clear but ppl have that mis conception that the Tomcat can only pull 7.5 when it can pull more it will struggle but it can pull more. But as far as the DCS stuff goes yeah it's a fantastic flight sim but I wouldn't rely on that too much.
@@s3viking214 I mean DCS or in this case Heatblur used ex pilots as consultants for all their modules...Not sure we can say the same as for the level of detail Gaijin use. I feel modern FMs are more like Ace combat.

I would love to see WW1 content in WT, fight me. Could be a new subtree for every nation, with WW1 planes, bi- and triplanes, a few tanks like the Renault FT, A7V, Mark V plus some armored cars.
WW1 Stuff wasnt really designed on Vehicle Vs Vehicle combat more as a supporter role for infantry. It would be painfully slow and most of the time tanks wouldnt do much damage on each other

This was one of the models I had hanging from my ceiling in my room as a kid. Along with the f4u corsair, the f4 phantom, p38 lightening, a b17, and a b25 Mitchell bomber.
This aircraft was kind of like "The Main Aircraft" in Aero Elite Combat Academy 2002, right?

4 years ago I started to watch your videos, always wishing I could fly these beasts you made videos of. It seems like yesterday I was so hyped to unlock the p-51h and when they announced the a-10 and the f-14A I felt that same excitement and I’m glad a game can bring me so much joy I sincerely hope all war Thunder players get that same feeling

I have almost no use for top tier. Sure, I unlock them and fly them in test flight. But I almost never crew them. I am curious about the Phoenix though. How soon after wheels up can you get a lock and launch? I would be interested in knowing if you can lock and launch on six different targets less than 60 seconds after game start and if you can, how many successful hits will you get?
Even with the small maps, at low altitude and slow they shouldn't reach the other spawn.
Would not be surprised if the F-15 and Mig-25 end up in the game by the end of the year
For older planes i really want the B-25J with its 18 forward facing .50 cals and the B-25H with its nose mounted 75mm and a dedicated loader so you can switch round types unlike the Hs-129

Member when in 2015 or so gaijin said they will only expand top tier if they find a equal vehicle for every nation and only when they can release them all at the same time. Now every patch makes another thing op. It's so sad what fucking greedy losers they are and how it destroyed this game that could be so good under a better management.
Well said, but everyone is so fkin nationalistic when it comes to this game. I have never know such a try hard toxic community. Who would literally just fly F-14 vs other F-14 till the MiG 29 comes out for Germany and Russia and then the F-14 players will complain and cry that the MiG 29 is amazing, so Gaijin will have to add the F-16 and then the F-15 all the while Italy will likely still have an F-104 and France wont have a new Mirage and Britain will have the FGRs. All the while they pump out more overpriced premium content and don't add new game modes or maps that players actually want.

I tell you what would really get me excited- subs, I missed out on that event and it’s the one event (along with the Mechs I suppose) that I really wish I could play. I would really like to sit in a sub and hunt other subs or surface ships, naval rb needs a rework anyway so how about update Silent Hunter or update Red October.

Phly getting giddy over a 22km phoenix kill meanwhile I remember air rb on an EC map a few months ago and I scored a 60km kill with an Aim-7E.
If you’re high and fast on a large map, the Aim-7 is very scary when employed correctly
I’m pretty sure the balancing factor for this jet right now at 11.3 is the learning curve everybody has to deal with

in supersonic flow, the classic elevons becomes ineffective, thats why F14 uses independent floating elevators
