  • Tony Stark had one, now you can too - and unlike many Italian exotics, an early R8 could set you back less than £30,000 - is it worth buying over the equivalent 911?
I sit down with @volkswizard Andrew Chapple and talk about his glorious 2014 Audi R8.

Honestly mate its a fantastic car. A naturally aspirated v8 placed in the back, AWD and coupled with a fantastic manual transmission. And talking about styling this is an example of a timeless design.

11:10 I can confirm it was the same for the Gallardo. I was at the Lambo factory back in 2009 and both engine and body came straight from Germany. The only Lambo bit was the spanners and screwdrivers used in Sant'Agatha to bolt the parts together. When we were done with the Gallardo line our tour guide said: 'and now we go to the REAL Lamborghini's, which was back then the Murcielago (the Versace edition in fact 😉)

Y’know, it’s so nice to see footage of these cars gracefully scything through corners at reasonable road speeds, planted and poised, holding a nice line, engine burbling - rather than howling into every sweeping bend sideways with the traction control off, tyres billowing plumes of smoke and the camera-man on the apex literally fearing for his life. Chris Harris if you are watching this - I love you man, but there is another way.

Thank you for this series. I think it is very interesting for most of us 'regular' petrol heads with not too much money what we can expect from dream cars that are attainable. Although I'm more of a Porsche fan, the R8 is very high on my 'sports/supercars to buy when it's not a Porsche' list. Knowing what to look out for, weak points, strong points comparisons to alternative cars are very interesting. I don't mind a bit of technical information in this, and I think many who are interested in maybe buying this car will appreciate the more indept information as well. Also lovely format like this, with a true car expert and enthusiast next to you. Please keep it up! Cheers!

Great video - thank you. And great car. I'm biased (Gen 1, V10, Manual Spider), but think the R8 is one of the best value (bang for your buck) supercars there is on the market today. For me, the manual takes it from being a great car to a truly special experience.

Yet another incredible review, you seem to go into details about real world driving (on UK roads with our often terrible weather) Most other reviews you get are often based on racetrack experiences or on perfect roads (the like of which you just don't get here) I would kill to own this beast! Very interesting video as I'm looking into getting an R8. Definitely sold me on getting a Manual, was never interested in the R-tronic except for the GT (which may be out of my price range). I wasn't contemplating the V8 at all but this video has got me thinking about it, still think I'd rather get the V10 since it will feel like more of an upgrade to my RS3 Saloon. Was looking for a V10 Plus Manual but they're hard to come by. Funny thing is, I nearly bought my RS3 Saloon from Volkswizard but someone else got it first.

I had a gen 1 R8 for nearly 5 yrs.The mag ride dampers weren't revised but they were manufactured by a different company at some point for Audi and unfortunately they turned out to be less reliable than the original ones. I replaced my my fronts at 31k miles, the rears were still ok when I sold it at 42k miles. Other than that it's a truly great car and overall very reliable.

I had V8 R8s short-listed alongside 911 Turbos and early Gallardos when I started exploring an addition a few years ago. If I had bought an R8, it would have been a V8 with a stick, no question. They sound amazing and the parts-bin build sheet would keep it from breaking the bank as a long term car. I ended up finding a Lamborghini in-budget, so that's what happened, but I continue to try and talk one of my friends into buying a 4.2 R8 so I can drive one (I already know a guy with a 911 Turbo).

In the Netherlands, Audi charges 40€ for a “welcome inspection” and they check some 35 points of the car and build up a report. I’d assume this is standard.
I bought a second hand car and asked them to do this inspection. Turns out some things were found by Audi and covered under the 2nd hand warranty offered by the dealer who sold me the car.

Here in the United States manual V8’s still bring good money. R Tronic V8 are cheap but manual ones start at 70k USD. You might find a high mileage manual at a shady dealer in the $60’s. Manual V10’s start at about $95k.

Hey Jay, I'm currently owning a manual 997.1 C4S and I really like it. But I have always had a good eye for the R8 4.2. I tack my car and I drove about 8.000 kilometers last year. I would love to see a comparison between these two cars. Should I stick with the 911 or go for the R8.. I love the stick shift in the 997 as well as the road feel. I can also take my wife and daughter for trips in the 911. I had an Audi A3 -14 as commuter before, and that stick shift was also wonderful. I'm left wondering.. what are the pros of the R8? I know you touch the subject in the video but I'd like a direct comparison.

Never got why there was so much ' the V8 isn't a supercar'. Unfortunately even powerful UA-camrs have fallen into the horsepower trap and 0-60 times to define a supercar, when in fact there is NO universally agreed, definition of what a supercar is. One such thought which I agree with is that the car must be designed with driving performance at the forefront with no compromises made for practicality. I would say the R8 has that checked with a tiny boot and mid engine layout. That it must greatly outperform normal or even sports cars not just in a straight line but handling. This car would be slower than a mapped golf R but I know what would win in successive cornering. Finally looks, it looks like a supercar its low and wide.

I had a V10 R tronic for a weekend when my V8 manual was in the Main Dealers having its third attempt at an oil change which didnt leak on my drive (!). Ok, I only drove it for 100 miles or so but came to the conclusion I'd never get used to it in 100,000

Nice review, but a couple of comments from someone on the other side of the pond. Manual gen 1 R8s are already getting scarce in the USA and the prices have been going up for some time. The days when this car was a deal are basically over unless you consider them a budget Garlands. There were also mechanical improvements in 2012, specifically to the mag ride system which was an issue with earlier R8s. Interestingly, the engine needs to be pulled to replace the AC on the V8, but not the V10. However, a nice manual V10 is REALLY hard to find.
The BIG issue with this car is the C8 Vette. The almost 6 year old car in this review would probably still cost more used than a brand new C8. Why on earth would you buy this car over the C8, unless you had to have a manual and/or AWD????

    • @JayEmmOnCars
      @JayEmmOnCars  4 роки тому +2

Perhaps the C8 vette will push prices of the R8 back down, and of course there will always be peope who MUST have an R8

No, the FSI v8 engines in this and the B7 RS4 , S5 & RS5 use metal plated chain guides which fix the issue. However, they do suffer power loss over time due to carbon build up on the inlet valves that the non-direct injection S4 v8 does not, but carbon build up is a lot cheaper to rectify than a broken cam chain guide.

Never had understood why some dont look up on the R8 as a supercar, if a ferrari 360 is without question, then sonis a R8. Although it really does not matter in the great scheme of things.

I’d class any v10 r8 model as a supercar but probably not the v8. The 360 is nearly 10 years older than the first gen R8 and yet it’s still faster without even being 4wd.

@@joshoprayy from first hand experience the 360 is about the same.
A V8 F40 is over 30 years old, and was a supercar of its day. There are many old cars that were classed as supercars in there day, but buy today's standards are slow. So are they still supercars? It depends on how the individual looks at it.
The same will be said of modern supercars.
I have had many italian so called supercars, and some of them would be out preformed by the R8. I see the R8 as a supercar.
But I respect everyone sees things differently. I would still have one, V8 or V10.

There are so many car I'm interested in, but this is the absolute top of the list. 2nd would have to be a 996 911. I used to have a Farenheit GLI in Imola yellow. I thought about selling the Evora to buy one, however, i think it would only be to own a supercar as i have no love for the brand. I do like the look of the original r8 (more than later r8s) but they are now a little long in the tooth and many of them seem to have been abused and not looked after. The Evora is probably the better car as well.

While some may not consider it a supercar, I think the best "first supercar" is the C8 Corvette now. Even brand new, spec'd out above $80k, it's a relative bargain of a price. You get the looks, the performance, the experience, but you're also left with a solid warranty, and relatively cheaper repairs out of warranty, when it expires. I love cars like the R8, 911 GT3, etc. but I think people underestimate just how jarring the costs are to own one, especially when you consider the premise of a bargain supercar purchase is "saving money"

Ahh affordable entry level super cars. Thats why i have a Alpine GTA V6 Turbo. Yes people sniggering at the back. It was made from the renault parts bin. Apart from the bespoke center spine chassis and full body and floorpan made from Enduraflex. When running max Alpine manual factory boost 0.8 bar, they are ruddy quick. You can tweak them a little more but the PRV was never a turbo engine. in this 2.5 form they love to rev given the short stroke. Paid 5k for mine and current valuation is at 21k. However only 24 left in the UK. So very rare. They also have the worlds first ever full engine management system. The Renault Renix from 1985. Its encrypted and cannot be remapped. So is common to go with a modern aftermarket ECU for more power.

Not covered under any warranty. 2011 and onwards cars had a reinforcement plate welded in at the factory which solved the issue.
