  • Every year one of the world's most dangerous races is held on Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. The Baja 1000 is a 24-hour off-road race that stretches 1,000 miles through the Mexican desert. Since its debut in 1967, the race has claimed dozens of lives. The competitors range from professional drivers to everyday amateurs, and the risks are massive. We spoke with both to find out just what makes the Baja 1000 the ultimate challenge.

I have been to Baja several times in my life, I've helped pit teams like Valley Performance, Herbst, Rivera, and Collins Motorsports, all great teams, and somewhat bigger budgets, but the danger is real. Every time I've done the Baja 1000, somebody has been hurt or killed , whether its a local or race team member, or racer, we really try our hardest to stay safe and keep the locals safe too. SCORE has medical teams on standby whenever needed, and most big budget teams have certified EMTs riding in their private helicopter chasing them too, and if I remember right they can stop anytime to aid in medical to anyone hurt on the ground locals or Americans and then get back to Chasing for their team, plus SCORE officials can adjust times for for the racer that stop during the race to help aid hurt racers during the race. Dakar is tough too, and I'm not taking anything away from that, but Baja is nonstop.

Lie!!!!!the EMT do not help locals.
I live in Ensenada where the 1000 passes by and there is no American emt. Helping citizens/locals why not race in the USA because it’s deadly and In

Thats simply is true, I remember when Jason Balwin crashed in the Baja 500, racing his Trophy truck, and trying to pass his dad's Trophy truck. Their were EMTs from both side. ( USA and Mexico). He killed one and injured several others including Brian Stewart ( Ivan "Ironman" Stewart) son. I haven't met an driver that wouldn't stop and help, or even most chase teams.

Second, have in mind that this guy calls "booby trap" anything in the course that can get you out of the race, both natural or man-made ones (which tbh is rather unusual that locals set them), and yes, you will see ramps and more, but those are placed by the own organization.

Not really booby traps. There is a lot of ag down there, and they like to divert water. Their favorite trick is to turn it into a mud race. They don't typically don't have a lot of equipment to make a jump or dig a hole. I have seen them come out with a shovel, but really there's not a lot you can do with hand tools. All the crashes on the video were in typical natural terrain.

Both are great offroad races, so does WRC, but if you're talking about the ultimate offroad challenge for cars and drivers Baja is for sure on top of all. Take 4WD system for example, 4WD is pretty much considered as a staple for all offroad cars for decades or maybe even the entire last century, Dakar cars are 4WD mostly and people were winning with 4WD, but any 4WD system in existence is just considered to be too fragile or not fast enough for Baja, yes 4WD will make cars faster in the first couple of miles but it's meaningless if they can't make it to the end, so Trophy Trucks(the leading class of Baja with pretty much no regulation) are still pretty much all RWD with just a few exceptions, they can do 4WD if they want and quite some people have spent decades trying to develope a 4WD system that works, but with very few success. That's how tough Baja is.
"How can people go offroad fast with 2WD cars?" you might ask, that's where driving skills come into play, and make Baja even tougher then everything else.
