The Samsung DeX experience has gotten so much better in the past couple years. It gives you a full PC like experience, and can match almost every workflow. Has anyone else made the full switch over from a laptop?
I think it is a bit hard to still manage video editing through a mobile experience but it's definitely possible with the right App!

Hey Karl! There's a video editing app called Motion Ninja on the Google Play Store. It does cost money, but it's by far one of the best video editing applications on Android, hands down. My only issue is that it's only supported in portrait mode, but it would be awesome to see them utilize landscape for tablets, such as the Tab S7. But hopefully in a future update they'll consider it. 😁

I've managed to basically make my Tab S6 my laptop replacement, and it's honestly still my go to most of the time at home. One of my favorite things about Dex on a tablet is being able to have an external screen connected and use the tablet as an extra screen, usually to watch videos while I get work done on the Dex side. Of course, having Dex right on the device is also really nice!

For video editing try PowerDirector. It is probably the best video editing app available for Android. I have been editing 4k since my Galaxy s7 years ago and it has gotten a lot more capable since then.

Agree, so true. Dex on a bigger screen (a monitor or tv) with HDMI cable plus Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, and you have a better performance for basic work and even an entire OS for online school.
Fact: you can use the tablet while You're using it Dex mode via HDMI and take notes from your classes

Yes. Every new iPad release people talk about how iPads can be a "computer" to many people and whatever but no one remembers Samsung DeX which is a much better "computer" than any iPad. No matter how much power iPads have, they are still "basic" tablets. The galaxy tablets can do so much more and with DeX the possibilities are endless.
I use my S21 to play dreamcast games (emulator) fullscreen at my 75" TV with my xbox controller via bluetooth. The sound also goes to the TV. It's so easy and plug and play (either usb-c cable or wirelessly) that I can't for the love of god understand why still almost no one knows this exists...

@, many android features are swept under the rug when it comes to most reviews. But when it is done by Apple, you'll never stop hearing from them from most "youtube influencers". It's sickening how they always do this.

    •  3 роки тому +4

@@markcastillo3490Yes, it's really sad but it's the way it is. But android OEMs each one making their own custom skin and features on each update also don't make it easy to track these new features. Great tablet for basically everything. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxLNmVocUk8tnSkwWIlYSNFzWRIaFTBuzS I bought it specifically for art, and that 4k screen is really fantastic for it! Also has LOUD audio, even tho the speakers aren't in necessarily prime locations it really projects! You do need to get a case for this bad boy IMMEDIATLY though as it doesn't come with one.Battery life is really good! Standby time us FANTASTIC. This guy can go about a week on standby and be just fine. The screen is massive so the longer you have the screen on, brightness especially, it will effect battery life. I am very happy with it though! One thing that I didn't consider is that since the screen resolution is so high, viewing ticktocks/ reading webtoons can be slightly blurry. There is no way to turn down resolution either, so it just be like that.Would still judge this bad boi at 10/10 for my first tablet. I've had it 3 months now and its not shown any evidence of "slowing down" or anything. Love it!

I used Dex to get through a week without a laptop for school. It holds a lot of promise. Not all apps are optimized to work with a mouse like a laptop. In Office products for example, you cannot drag and highlight/select a group of words together, a simple function on a laptop that becomes cumbersome when doing HW with Dex. I did enjoy the overall experience and how you can dock often used apps, ability to split screen between two apps, ability to multitask. One additional important improvement would be to make Chrome browser behave like it does on a chromebook, allowing extensions and full functionality.

I've had my Tab S6 with a keyboard for over a year now (bought it 3 months before Tab S7 series came out). My experience so far:
Only good thing about DeX is that you can resize your apps and have up to 6 apps opened. Otherwise it is just redesigned normal mode marketed to make you buy it. You can run multiple apps just fine in normal mode as well. Most apps on anyone's device, especially Android, are going to be entertainment, so I don't see any use for desktop interface when you don't have to search for 10+ apps. Besides, muscle memory from phones just makes it more convenient to open anything the old way.
Oher things are not so pleasant:
    1) the "case" which is the back cover + keyboard isn't so protective at all. It doesn't fix in its place, so if you carry it often in a bus, etc., you'll end up scratching your keyboard and/or screen. Luckily my screen protector is doing it's job, but the keyboard is already quite scratched just from 1 year use.
    2) touchpad is just plain useless. I mean, if you have a 10x faster option to use touchscreen to open something why would you waste time to navigate a mouse? It is like using first button phones (touchpad) and modern iPhones (touchscreen). Maybe some people will find a use for it, but tm there is no use for it apart from visual looks.
    3) the pins that connect the keyboard to the tablet get dirty often, and because of that the tablet can't recognise the keyboard properly.
    4) the connectors themselves also have a tendency to bend if you connect/disconnect often. I already had 2 ocassions when the tablet wouldn't recognise my keyboard because the connectors made bad contact. I almost went to buy a new keyboard, but luckily just twitching the pins a bit fixed a problem for now. But who says that it won't come up again. And when the old keyboard dies just because of this design flaw, do I have to buy a new keyboard for 100$?
    5) GPS is just poorly optimized. Normal use gets me around 7 hours of battery (20-80 charging), with navigation + WiFi on - 2 hours is tops you'll get. I know it is not a priority, but they still should work on that.
    6) Tablet itself can't seem to open 2 presentations, 2 Excels or 2 Word files in a Microsoft app. When you open a second file it just saves the first and throws you into second one, so I ended up downloading a seperate app just so I could open 2 .doc files.... Come on Samsung...
DeX just doesn't compensate for a lack of real computing power. Yes, you can use it for light essay writing, media scrolling or e-mail responding, but when it comes to something more complicated like FINISHING essays, working with a huge Excel sheet or editing a video. If I need to lets say open 1 pdf file to copy pictures from, 1 Excel file with 10 000 lines of data and 1 word file with 5 pages of text in it, I'd still prefer a PC with a bit more power and a bigger screen. For now, at least for me, it remains just a little cool feature I can use to make my time using the tab a little bit more comfortable. It is in no way near what most Media tech youtubers call "Full PC experience". When, and only when tablets become close to or as powerful as at least laptops, have larger screen (haven't worked with a 12.4 s7+, but 10.5 s6 makes you tired after several hours of usage), have durable keyboard connectors and keyboards and when you get a chance to connect a flash or something into it without needing a seperate adapter or anything, I'd consider saying that DeX is actually a replacement for a laptop.
Just my thoughts, not a Samsung hater, just some points they could perhaps note when designing s8 if I am not the only one who got these issues.

I know this is an old comment, but I completely agree with you. My opinion mirrors yours to a large extent.
To me, Dex is still a little more than a gimmick. What is the point of it in a work environment? When people say it helps them be 'productive', I always wonder what kind of work they're doing. Aside from light e-mailing, slider-based image effects (Lightroom, ON1), and rudimentary text input...what kind of 'real work' can you do with it? You gave great examples.
I value tech youtubers more than 'official' journalists, and always will, but when they call Dex 'productive' and 'Full PC experience', I can't help but think the work they're doing isn't what I would call...serious.
The only place, I would say, it may have some applications is education.

What are your thoughts know knowing that the S8 Ultra is out? I'm a student and I'm wondering whether its worth it... I want something with good power, light, versatile. Was originally going to get a pc for gaming and work but I thought, why not get the S8 Ultra for cheaper? I'm unsure on what to get now.

    • @marks9127
      @marks9127 2 роки тому +1

@@4lxsha455 I am a student too. I'd recommend you to assess what kind of power you need to complete your study assignments. If it is just writing essays or reports in Word or Powerpoint, and you don't need to use any specific Windows programs, go for S8 Ultra, will work good with that large screen. If you know you need to use more powerful programs, Android platform is a no go.
I'll share my experience for you to better understand - I am a geography student, now 2nd year. Our first year was mainly introductory courses, and assignments were mainly either an essay or a research report. I could do those on a tablet no problem. But when 2nd year came, we were introduced to more complicated statistical analysis or map making programs. Luckily my mother had a laptop she didn't need, so I started using it for these programs and then only wrote the text on the tablet. As time passed, it just became easier to do everything on a laptop, as it has more features in same Word or Powerpoint programs. Now I do everything on a laptop and only use a tablet for storing lecture materials or reading books professors recommend.
I tried to use my S6 as a pc, bought an adapter dongle for mouse and bigger screen, tried to hook it up to my main PC at home via a Wifi connection (so I can control it when I am at university). Never worked as great as I'd hoped to, a laptop just has all those usb ports and HDMI slots already integrated.
So overall I'd say you go for a laptop. It's heavier, so harder to carry every day, but that weight just makes it way more versatile.

    • @4lxsha455
      @4lxsha455 2 роки тому

@@marks9127 Thankyou so much for giving me a proper reply compared to the others I've seen. I would go for a laptop but then I would rather just go for a pc because I wanted to get a tablet/ipad for how easy it is to carry anywhere and everywhere. Personally, carrying a laptop around with the processing power I need is a no go. At first, I was going to go for a pc for gaming and for my studies, then I really looked into what my purpose was for it and what I needed to focus on and I thought that I should get a tablet/ipad to act as a laptop or pc for the next few years to purely focus on my studies. I may be going out a lot more than I used to or even going abroad so I'd need it to be as light as possible. I didnt want to spend a lot of money on a good, light, laptop compared to what I have get for £1000-£1500 and have it as my own mini setup for the next 3 yrs. I dont plan on doing very heavy work for my studies however for my career, I want to start using Adobe Photoshop etc and plus with the games I wanted to play, I'm stuck on whether I should get a pc or a tablet. Games aren't as important to me but I would still like to play them a bit. I thought since I have a few years left, once I'm done with those few years I can upgrade and get a laptop/pc/... when I have the money. I'm thinking of getting an Ipad but I haven't used apple and all I know them for is how faulty their tech is. However, the M1 chip compared to the snapdragon is more power and its around how much power I need for the next few years. The only thing holding me back from getting an Ipad is the OS and if it can actually last me those few years.

i agree with everything you said abt dex.. it's amazing and need more attention.
i've been using dex on my tab s5e and i really love it.. finally ditching my heavy bulky gaming laptop.
however, if you're on a budget and running a secondhand dex devices you might want to consider buying a bluetooth keyboard instead. i've found one with a nice trackpad which can be a cheap replacement for samsung keyboard. it's nice, it's detachable, while still being able to be used.
    My current dex setup including
    1. Tab S5E, with a spigen case so i can put it standing
    2. A bluetooth keyboard with trackpad. i personally don't like the official samsung folio keyboard case because they need to be attached to be used.
    3. 2pcs of type c hub dongles. with HDMI, and usb. one for mobile, one for home
    4. a mechanical keyboard and gaming mouse and a monitor for home
    5. a wireless mouse for mobility, and also a usb wireless presenter from targus
when i got home, i pull the tab from my bag, and connect it to the hub/ dongle. it's connected to a power source, a monitor, a keyboard, and a mouse. essentially replacing my pc and laptop. don't get me wrong, but i still have my rig for a more heavy workload. but if i just want to do media consumption, a gaming rig consume too much electricity
when i need to go out, i just pull the tab from the hub. the bluetooth keyboard and a spare dongle already in bag for later use. i also bring a logitech wireless mouse and a targus presenter in case i need it..
dex is a really great choice and i thank samsung for creating it.

My favorite use case for DeX is on my company's work computer. I run it as an app there, this way I can just connect my phone with the USB cable and have DeX running on one of the screens - have all my apps, passwords, bookmarks, personal data, everything in that window. Then when I'm gone for the day, just unplug my phone and none of my personal stuff is on the work computer. Also awesome if your company blocks social media sites on their network, so you can just run them in the DeX window using your regular phone data and still see them all on the big screen while using computer's keyboard and mouse.

DeX is a comfort blanket allowing you to use a tablet like a Windows laptop! Sadly, you are still stuck with the same Android apps; the only difference is you can clutter your desktop with loads of different sized windows! I love the simplicity of a clean desktop, with usually one app and sometimes split apps. DeX is doing what MS tried to turn Windows into a hybrid, but Samsung is coming from the other direction! I feel it is no more productive, just a comfort to those that cannot move over from a desktop to tablet UI? A survey on YT suggested only 15% of Samsung users worked in DeX last week, and I was surprised it was that many?
I have no problem it exists as it certainly helps some people that are happier looking at a Windows interface. Maybe, one day it will be helpful. Still, now it no longer supports Linux, I would buy a good Chromebook and get ChromeOS, Android, Linux and eventually Windows, a far superior experience and none of the hassle of buying monitors, keyboards and mouses!

Dex user for the past 2 years here, with Samsung note 10+ and now note 20 ultras. I did dump my laptop in early 2020, as DEX was strong enough for part of my work. I use the DEX station to have 1440P, combined with a 4K Samsung monitor, and a USB wireless mouse and keyboard combo. It works really well and can do most of the tasks with sometimes a slight walkaround. If you are the type to travel, you can even buy a lapdock, which is an empty laptop case powered by your phone, you can get those for a 200-300$, compared to the tab s7+ that can be quite pricey. If you don't travel often, I would recommend not spending money on a tablet and instead personalize your Samsung phone, they have some awesome features to multitask and do work on the go. I say this cause if you are at home, you can use your phone with DEX, so the tablet will end up being used once in a while to watch videos. If have 1300$ to spend then go for it, but as of now I would probably wait for the S8 to come out.
What I love about Android, is the ability to really use your phone as a PC, you got some really nice file explorer apps. As for editing, premiere is perfect for quick editings, like TikTok or IG content under 60 seconds, I use it all the time with the s-pen, and works great.

I personally cannot give up a proper desktop computing environment, as I need to run Windows and Linux regularly, often with a VM open as well. That being said, I think far too few people knew about DeX when lockdowns and work from home started becoming a reality across the world. People flocked to buy new computers, even if they were cheap, underpowered computers, because adults had to work from home and kids had to learn online. So many folks could simply have purchased a USB-C to HDMI cable, and Bluetooth peripherals to make use of the computer they already have, Samsung DeX.

I use a PC for my main computing, my phone is a iPhone, but several years ago I purchased the original Samsung Galaxy Tab S and really liked it. It actually still works just fine. But this year I decided to upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7. DEX is an amazing tool that Apple doesn't have a current equivalent for, and for that reason I absolutely believe that a high end Samsung phone (with a larger monitor or TV) or the Tab S7/S7+ could definitely replace a PC for some. I see it especially good for travel. I already used my tablet exclusively for travel anyway, since I could just remote into my PC from it for any time I need more computing power. But DEX may make that obsolete. I've had an iPhone since 2009 and this is the first time I've seriously considered switching when the time comes to replace my current phone.

Had this for over a year now as a mobile machine for school. Still have a PC.
    Pros:
super light weight. It weighs like a notebook and I love it.
    Great for notetaking and drawing
Has power and great screen. Also great battery life.
Love using it as a reader. Read lots of manga and web comics
    Cons:
I wouldn't use this as a replacement for windows laptops. I can't install windows based programs that you may need for certain classes like MEGA X a genetics software I used.
Not a lot of apps are optimized on this machine. It'll still run but be wonky.
Keyboard is expensive. Like another hundred. The third party options are just okay.
Can't use third party pens as the stylus uses a special software. Which I get since its a really good low latency software, but I like to draw and it really sucks that if my pen tip dies I need to spend another 60 bucks.
Overall it's a great machine if it's normal daily tasks. Notes, drawing, emailing, etc. And also being a media consumption machine ( a really good one at that with a Super AMOLED display plus 120hz refresh rate). If Samsung got apps optimized for it, it'd be much better. I wouldn't recommend this as your only tech if you had to choose windows laptop or Samsung Tablet because of the price. As it's around 900-1000$ for the best model. I bought used for 350 and use it as a media machine only.

I have been using a TAB S4 for main personal "computer" for a few years now. I have to use a windows machine for my 9-5. I have a work issued desktop at the office and a work issued laptop to WFH. But for 95% of my personal stuff I use a mobile device. That means shopping on line, chatting or video conferencing with friends, and media consumption. I only have a TV in the living room and I don't use it because it's always in use by other household members. About 6 months ago I did end up buying a very cheap entry level windows laptop because there are still certain things I just can't do on mobile. I only use my personal laptop a few times a month. Where I used my TAB S4 in DEX mode daily. I also use DEX for work as a companion to my work computer. I take most of my video meeting from my TAB. That way I'm not stuck at my desk during long meeting. When the TAB S8 comes out I plan on upgrading the TAB S4. I will get the 5G version because having conective on the go is important. Also with working from home there have been a few times where my home internet have gone out for hours at a time during work hours and because my TAB S4 has and LTE connection is was able to stay productive.

Buying a pricey tablet to use Dex is a fools errand, for the price of that tablet you could get a decently spec'd (far better specs then the tablet) windows laptop and be able to run things that aren't available in a mobile app, alternatively, for a quarter to half the price (depending on the unit) of the Tab S7+ you can buy a "portable monitor with keyboard", basically a laptop that has no CPU, storage or OS that you then connect your cell phone to to get the DEX experience, but ultimately the BEST Dex experience is using it the way it was intended, get a dongle that gives you a HDMI output to your TV and connect a mouse and keyboard, use your existing hardware, because buying any special hardware to be able to use Dex beyond a $30 dongle puts you spending too much money and better off just getting a real laptop.
Just had my first Dex experience last night via the Dongle method connected to my 34" Ultrawide PC monitor, it taught me modern phones (like the S21 Ultra) are faster then they need to be if you are only using the phone and not a Dex setup, I was running 3 to 4 separate apps simultaneously and it ran smooth.

I got it when it came out also with the note 20, for work it's a fine laptop replacement. It's funny I have a 50ich Samsung TV but find myself watching movies on the tabs7+. I also use it for word processing, dl movies and Microsoft teams. The track pad is ok but I recommend a bt mouse. For call of duty mobile and fortnight plugging into a TV works great too, can't wait to see future developments.

really thinking aboutt buying either this (tab s7) or the FE for studying. Everything I saw about them Samsung Tabs just looks insane and fits for what I need them. Its just that I dont know how much I will be missing the performance and media quality (Screen, Audio) when I go with the FE.

Damn man clean that screen before you roll Dex because that screen is gorgeous lol. Good video tho. I have the S21 Ultra and just got the Tab 7+ 5G yesterday. Yes it is a very nice combo that rivals and even beats iPhone and iPad. I can even make calls from my phone number on the Tab using Verizon Messages+, which surprised me.
