Hilarious! That’s so amazing that the two yarns are absolutely identical.
Love the yarny detective work you do for us, Crystal! ❤ (you could start another channel called Scotland Yarn … 🤣)
But here’s another question: how did Turkey become the world producer of acrylic yarn? Just curious.

These days it's all about production costs. Over 90% of yarns produced in Europe are produced / spun in facilities in either Turkey or Romania. Even when the fibers come from somewhere else and the distribution companies sit somehwere else, the yarn is usually spun there. That's because they have low energy and labour costs, while still providing rather decent infrastructure to ship it into other countries. It's just a good old fashioned capitalist numbers game.

Most people in the USA don't realize that brand names are ephemeral and changeable. An item that comes out of a factory will be shipped to different locations with brand name labels that reflect the companies doing business in a given location. What the individual company pays the factory can vary. Another company may have paid a different amount for the same or similar item. I once read there are more than 600 brand names for bacon but only about 6 companies that actually process it.

Many years ago I worked in a clothing factory, there were at least 6 retailers who bought the garments to sell and each one had it's own brand label. Like the yarn, the only thing that didn't change was the country it was made in.

The nearest JoAnns to me is an hour drive so unless I have other reasons to go to there it isn't worth spending 2 hours and at least $7 in gas money to go there. The thing I dislike about their website is that you can't use more than one coupon at a time. So if I have a 40% off one item and another coupon I would have to make separate orders and pay shipping on both.
Michaels online is like that too but we have a Michaels in town.
    That's my mini rant.

My Mom worked at a local retail store in the 60s. The owner took her to Atlanta to a trade show. My Mom saw first hand how the vendors took orders for the clothing. The same shirts on a table were sold at different wholesale prices depending on what label the purchasers want in the shirts. So if your store wanted to sale high in labels, you paid for that label. Same shirts with less expensive labels, you paid less. Looks like this is still the way things work in most categories of sales

I live in Wisconsin and I buy yarn at Herrschner a Wisconsin retailer. The shipping is $ 18.00, but if you spend more than $75 is free. I don’t understand why being in the same state shipping so high compared to Ice .

    • @nancyfink4828
      @nancyfink4828 Рік тому

Because Herrschners charges flat rate shipping. So if you order 5 skeins or 15 skeins the shipping will be the same. It's not based on weight or location (applies to the continental USA). Also they must of had a special, cause shipping isn't always free over $75. I placed a $150 with them and was charged shipping. Although, between sale items and a 30% off coupon I made out like a bandit even with shipping. Gotta watch their coupons and sales. Can really score big with them! 😊👍

Thanks for all the free patterns and tutorials you’ve shared. I’ve made so many of them. You’re really a good instructor. I’m making (at 64!) my very first cardigan from a tutorial of yours. It’s hard to believe that I’ve been crocheting almost 50 years and haven’t made a cardigan. So many, many thanks!

Hi Crystal. I think you'll find that Ice yarns are the 'own brand' of the manufacturer and they whack different labels on it for wool Merchants who generally used to be manufacturer's. Here in the UK there are lots of cross-overs but usually there is a tweak to the fibre content, the twist, the shape of the skeins etc. I very much enjoyed your video today. Keep up the great work ❤

Turkey pretty much rules the world of Yarn now as acrylic is a byproduct of the petrochemical industry and so much of that is sourced and pumped from the middle East.

I did go order some more in other colours to stock my sock yarn container I live way to far from a shop with any yarn plus I don't like to pay over $20 aud for basic sock yarn, when I know I can buy beautiful silk or hand dyed for far less even with the high cost of shipping to Australia ....sorry this is so long I hope it helps someone from Australia think past the high shipping costs the yarn comes quiet quickly :)

I bought a bonus cake I liked at Joann with a 50% off coupon. I plan on making a baby blanket. When AC Moore was “alive” they would have the mill ends yarn. One brand was from Canada. Bernat or Caron were in those bags. The yarn from Turkey could be ANYTHING! I would buy the stuff I could feel was def wool (with a coupon so I paid maybe $3.50) and go home and start googling. I would sell the mill ends on eBay once I knew the brand. I once found a yarn that sells for $35 a skein that was the same as what I was looking at! I sold it on eBay for $35 for the pound and gave someone a huge deal. I also made a nice amount on it. Win win. Unfortunately Michaels and Joann stopped selling mill ends bags of yarn.

I had to pay $70 for duty and taxes to get it shipped to Canada. Still was cheaper.

I have a Christmas project I do. It's called covered with love. I make crochet blankets and give them away to nursing homes and to the needy. Watching your videos will help find yarns cheaper.😊

Our crochet club is called Covered With Love and our mission is to provide blankets for various organizations in our local living area. We meet twice a month, once in a weekday and once on a weekend day, all year long.. We have provided blankets for foster children, senior centers, nursing homes, sheriff's departments, schools and even for a hospice group. We are currently in our eighth year of existence and going strong. I wish you the best with your Christmas project.❤

Hi! I went to Mrs. Baird's bakery once on a field trip. The bread went down the conveyor belt and branched off in different directions and slid into different brand bags. I was shocked. However, I am now better educated on how things really work.
    Same-same with yarn! 😜🧶💕

Those yarns are too pretty. I'm buying them in lots of colors but feel reluctant to make anything with them. They look better in display on shelves and bookcases. i like them better than pictures.

Yep, Crystal, no surprise there with the yarn being the same. Good review by the way!
I just wanted to share a bit of my experience with Ice-Yarns shipments, since I am not in the U.S.
I live in Israel. We are limited to a maximum of $75 worth of goods per shipment, or we pay huge amounts of taxes and customs. (Luckily, this excludes shipping, which is higher for us than the rates to the U.S., which makes zero sense, because we are only a 2.5 hrs flight away!!!)
Anyway, in $75 I usually manage to get about 6 to 8 packs of yarn and sometimes 1-2 more, if they have a good sale going.
My packages usually weigh around 8-9 Ibs. I never paid more than $3.50-$4.00 per 100gr of yarn, including shipping!!! The higher level usually reached with pricier yarn!!!
If you take the Mandala / Cakes DK as an example - 150g per skein (normal size) - that would come out to be $6.00 at most, per cake!!! Regular price, all year round, no favors, no coupons needed! Sometimes they even have great sales, too, so I can get it even cheaper.
I'm hoping this information is helpful.

Same with the Hobbii yarns, they just take them from somewhere and slap their own label onto it and tripple the price. I mean, look at Metallico vs. Gazzal Rock N Roll, or Wheel of Alpaca vs. YarnArt Flowers Alpaca. Same exact colors, same quality. Generally they take a lot from YarnArt.

I'm currently waiting on my 3rd Ice Yarn delivery. I tend to buy yarns there that I can't find here in the US. Color differences mainly. I have loved everything I have gotten. Thanks Crystal, I wouldn't have known about Ice Yarn without you. As for colors that most stores carry, I go for best price. As always, love the video 💜

Gosh, yes, Ice yarns has some lovely colors, especially their rainbow 🌈. There's one crochet channel where the lady has her annual Ice yarn shipping order that she opens all the boxes she's ordered. Never knew there were so many colors or that one person could order that much yarn at one time!

I've ordered twice from ICE yarns. I spent a little under $300.00 each time. The total cost per ball came to $2.55 per ball on one order and $2.35 per ball on my second order. It was well worth saving up the money and buying from ICE. I now have enough yarn to last me a while and it's all different types and weights. With a large variety I have yarn for any type of project.

Yes, ICE yarns are a company which makes and supplies yarns for other companies, and those companies slip their brand on it and sell it under their name with their price. They also sell to Hobbii, premier, and many more. The price directly from the manufacturer (ICE) is always cheaper... I had a live class on my channel a while ago talking about ICE, what that company is and how to shop on their website the best way. It surprised me how many people didn't know that ICE is a factory....
