Thanks! As a soldier we used to use floss to sew buttons back onto our field jackets as it lasted longer than regular thread. In 2011 I did a field repair to a rucksack using floss, and it's still good!
Sometimes I use empty floss containers as sewing kits. Add string to the spool, insert a few needles and small items in the gaps of the container, and it already has a blade on it to cut the string.
As a crocheter, I sometimes use the Navajo ply (aka chain ply) method to get a triple-thick strand of yarn off the skein. You could use it on dental floss, too, for a quick and easy way to get a thicker strand. There are YT videos on how to do it.
Even in developed OECD countries (from the USA to Italy) do not sell as many toothbrush as many people live there. A good toothbrush usabe for up to half a year > that means less than half of people brush their teeth even once in their lives.
I just want to say man. You're awesome. Given me so many ideas as a young Prepper. I have been watching your videos for quite some time. Would love to meet you one day. Sincerely a 23 year old fan from Georgia.
In this same vein, People seem to have forgotten about cheap, available, binder twine in favor of expensive paracord. The price of twine is usually 1/10 of paracord, and will do just about the same thing as well. Last summer I rigged a sun shade in my yard with binder twine. It lasted from May until the first snow.
Love this video and have always used Floss in my kits for many reasons. The strength is dependent on how old the floss is and the brand but no matter it can be braided up to make a very strong rope replacement if needed. Walmart sells a brand call equate that is rather strong (waxed type) and I have used it with one sting to hold a 10 pound weight. They come in different size pack and I usually go for the 120 yard packs that are not that much larger than the smaller sizes. The main reason I love the stuff is 10 bucks can get you 5 120 yard packs.. double triple weive it its cheap..
Dental floss is great for sewing on hard use buttons, like pants or a heavy coat, especially if they keep breaking with regular thread. I use it to repair buttons on my hunting clothes and its always a one time fix.
+Kevin Smith But y'all can probably still get effective prescriptions for enough of a strong enough opioid if you're a chronic pain patient. It's like pulling teeth in NC (Nazi Carolina) to even get under-medicated
May it be noted also that since floss is an inorganic fiber one can give stitches in flesh using it. I personally have done this twice on myself and have a relative who has done it three times as well. I thought I had done something that would be viewed as atrocious to the medical professionals in my family but it turns out they approved, one being an LPN, one a CNA, and another a physician's assistant. So if needed, it can be used for stitches.
I use floss to tie my suitcase zippers together before flying and make a mental note of how and where they're tied. It won't prevent TSA from getting inside my bag to inspect, but it sure lets me know if they did!
I remember dental floss from cub scouts Shelter making, traps, etc You can cut PVC pipe with it. Use a long piece. About 3ft. Use like a saw. Long strokes. It cuts better and straighter than using a saw.
Great ideas but careful my friends when binding body parts to each other or to another tool. Skin will definitely separate b4 5 lbs of pressure & binding someone for any length of time with floss can result in loss of circulation to that body part. When using floss for stitches couple things to keep in mind: use unwaxed since introducing wax into a cut isn't a good idea; floss is NOT sterile so get some antibiotics into the person ASAP & finally, unless you have injectable lidocaine & are proficient in its use, be prepared for the screams because the diameter of floss (esp the more expensive, wider brands) is larger than average suture. Probably best to use cheaper, thinner & narrower floss for that purpose. Just thoughts from an old RN in AL.
Hi from Switzerland - a dentists daughter =o) - I hung all my pictures in the flat with floss. Also x-massy ornamental stuff you hang on your windows ... it's nearly invisible. And floss makes imho the best thread for sewing on buttons! At the camp my jeans zipper kept opening independently! Attached a loop of floss on that pull-thing, pulled it up and the loop over the jeans'button. (Your pvc-video → OK survival is top priority. But how environmental friendly is PVC ...?? But otherwise this swissmiss likes your videos! Tschüss!
good video I like the empty cases of floss for fishing kit put some 10 or 12lb braid a hook and sinkers in the lid all contained in one and easy to store and find
You can open the floss container and drop a couple of small hooks in there with a sinker or two, in a tiny plastic bag and ‘viola’, a fishing kit is made.
It's even smaller when you take the floss out of the box. I keep some in my emergency dental kit and 25m/80ish yds is the size of a 5p and about 8mm thick
Floss makes a great way of securing rope ends to keep strands from unraveling. Sailors call it "whipping" and it's time consuming, but easily tied. Floss is also great for marking the nocking point and repairing the serving (portion where nock rests) on a bow string. In a movie, floss and toothpaste cut jail bars over a period of weeks...OK...this one may be BS. : )
+Robnord 1 That's Hollywood. Ever seen those bars in real life? You'd wear out angle grinders to even slice one piece (top or bottom) of a single bar. And you'd need to slice both parts of several bars to make an opening big enough to climb thru. Guards would notice that way before you got a bar sliced. If you did slice a bar, they'd notice that before you could start on a second one. You'd do much better trying your best to kill a guard with a weapon you make from something, hope your side finds you and rescues you, or do your time if you're legally detained
you could use multiple threads of the floss to make some kind of yarn/thin rope which is (as far as i know) even stronger than simply doubeling it... although that takes time, afford and skill to do so.
Hello,,Ive became a fan,,thank you for the information that you are willing to share with us. Question; what kind of bag is that, that you are showing towards the end of your video? Thanks again.
thank you for what you do you have thought me alot if valuable information some if which could even save my life some day and I just wanted to say thank you
Even in developed OECD countries (from the USA to Italy) do not sell as many toothbrush as many people live there. A good toothbrush usabe for up to half a year > that means less than half of people brush their teeth even once in their lives in the most advanced 36 countries (and the situation is slightly better in Europe...). According to my friend's experiences floss good for: - to make small game traps - to built shelter (for fixing small parts, to connect beams pine root is more suitable) - to sew (clothing and tent repair) - to make splint - hanging food on a tree (eg bear) - fixing arrowhead (eg head made of tin can :) )
You can use a magnifying glass (like on a Swiss Army knife, lots of delux multi tools have them as well), rifle scope, eye glasses, the peep magnifiers on a lot of signal mirrors (which many people keep in their survival kits), a battery and piece of wire, binoculars, and lots of stuff to start a fire. The bow and drill method is something most people are clueless about, they should learn this valuable skill
The military did that in WW2, maybe before. They'd put ammo casings and pebbles in tin cans strung on wire and string for perimeter alarms. If they heard it rattle, they'd open up on the place the rattle came from
Don, could you do Survival Hacks for wine corks? My wife and I enjoy a wine now and again and again. Consequently, I have enough corks to make a lifeboat. What are some survival uses?
The way you were holding that floss that five pound weight was actually equivalent to a 2.5 pound weight. You needed to dangle the floss from a single string, you were holding it with two
If you know how to make "rope" you can make a replacement bow string, I did, just to see if I could---ps it fraze easy, so reinforce it where it is used most
Thanks! As a soldier we used to use floss to sew buttons back onto our field jackets as it lasted longer than regular thread. In 2011 I did a field repair to a rucksack using floss, and it's still good!
I just posted the same tip, before I saw yours. It does work great on buttons
Sometimes I use empty floss containers as sewing kits. Add string to the spool, insert a few needles and small items in the gaps of the container, and it already has a blade on it to cut the string.
I like when he says be strong, be of good courage, long live the republic and god bless America
You, sir, are a great teacher. I appreciate the knowledge you share with dolts like me who were not raised in homes with outdoorsy type parents!
Thanks Kevin!

I like it when you can find ways to use everyday idems such as tental floss.👍
You did Betsy Ross proud with your sewing job on the pocket. Thanks for keeping us thinking outside the floss. Have a blessed Independence weekend!
Thanks Gene, I've been wanting that pocket fixed for a while.
You can also repair the clear rubber type band around your eye glasses with it.
"We're all familiar with dental floss, or we need to be."

The mint flavor one acts as a good insect repellent wasps mosquitos hate mint odor
I knew that they hated those odors, never thought to put the two together! Thanks for the idea...even if it took me three years to get here lol!
the securing plants is actually a good ideas especially with wintergreen or peppermint flavored because most insects hate those

Great vid Sootch. I used dental floss to stitch up a wound once. Worked great
Great for wrapping feather fletching and emergency stone or bone points on arrows too. Thanks for the video!!!
Good point! Thanks
Haha, good "point".
I live in West Virginia & they don't sell dental floss here cause nobody has teeth
+Kevin Smith But y'all can probably still get effective prescriptions for enough of a strong enough opioid if you're a chronic pain patient. It's like pulling teeth in NC (Nazi Carolina) to even get under-medicated
@@cthulhu6697 I know its been a year but why you call it Nazi Carolina
hehe
😢
ah i understand the Dental floss in garrote wire the tooth paste is plastic explosive and the tooth brush is the detonation device
Ah, a fellow man a culture
Great video. It's so compact, perfect for day hike bag. Thank you!

I always enjoy your video's, you do alot of research. thanks!
If you have a bow, floss can be used to mark you nock point to give a consistent launch each time from the bowstring.
Love this series
Its very strong and thin, its extremely useful. Lots of good tips here my friend. Cheers.
Another good use is a wind indicator while hunting deer. Every year I tie some to both ends of my bow.
Another great video....👍
Love that Colonial music intro.
"WOW, i can see!" hahaha

Lol
You can cut PVC pipe with it. I've done it.
I really like this series great work
good video I like the empty cases of floss for fishing kit put some 10 or 12lb braid a hook and sinkers in the lid all contained in one and easy to store and find
Dental Floss is my new best friend!
You can open the floss container and drop a couple of small hooks in there with a sinker or two, in a tiny plastic bag and ‘viola’, a fishing kit is made.
the dad jokes and laughs are the best xD
my sis and i used dental floss for sewing when we recovered the sofa at the cottage. worked gr8
I bet Macguyver could make a lawnmower from dental floss! Ha ha ha ;)
YOU SEMPER FI ARE SURVIVALIST 💯💯💯

My mother once stitched my shoe back together with fishing line. It worked pretty well if I'm being honest.
love these videos

I though you were gone to show your new swimwear , GREAT VID !!
I am such a dental floss junkie I enjoyed this :)
+Pople BackyardFarm A dental floss junkie? Wow. Have you started mainlining it yet? ;)
#21) I've made a bow string out of too! just to see if I could, used it for 2 weeks ( Fraze easily)
good content brother, love all your vids man! keep it up.
I would braid them together to form a small rope .
and probably could make a pretty decent fishing fly out of floss too.

I actually use floss for sewing on buttons and seams because the floss is stranded better than typical thread and holds better

Parabéns !!! muito bom mesmo e bem interessante , otimas ideias
somebody has been watching way too much MacGyver
You can make a bow drill to get a fire going if you have nothing else.
Good info.
Long live the Republic!
Cool but I always carry a spool 50 and 100 lb fishing braid , but yer great idea as a purse carry.
Cool video. Of course if its for survival you can always make a trap/snare.
That's what the aluminium cans were for, it's an alarm/trap (if you have the gun to kill the unsuspecting victim) ha
The military did that in WW2, maybe before. They'd put ammo casings and pebbles in tin cans strung on wire and string for perimeter alarms. If they heard it rattle, they'd open up on the place the rattle came from
well,I keep dyneema wire in my bag,it's thinner, holds 20 pounds and you can use it as floss as well. .
There are some brands that makes a mint flavor and it is GREEN, so that would help disguise it better if used as a trip wire.
What about water? I know it's pretty obvious but I think you would be able to find afew neat ways of using the No#1 survival tool
Very nice...
You need a tool to cut bananas? I'm so sorry.
Just an example....
Just messing with ya sootch. Thankful for the informative video.
Lol
every bug put bag I see has at least 5 knives

Flemish twist bow string with 2 different colors. 7 white and 1 red or green. 4 in each bundle.
I've used the non flavored for stitches. works greak
yeah. Mint in a wound=OUCH!!!!
yeah. Mint in a wound=OUCH!!!!
I love you dude
how about cheap braid fishing line ? you could do even more with that and cheaper too maybe another vid cheers keep up the top vids
regards Jeff
Looks like Don just 'Sootched' something up ;-)
the waxed stuff works great to fletch arrows
Ive found dental floss to be a bad trip wire..it sticks out really well even in low light
Stupid question but do you remember how much that backpack was by any chance?
If you know how to make "rope" you can make a replacement bow string, I did, just to see if I could---ps it fraze easy, so reinforce it where it is used most
remember too that there is dental floss and dental tape which is a flat wide floss that can also be very useful best to carry both
Thanks
