Right on thanks for the explanation, I have NATO straps for most of my watches but I haven’t used them yet, and I also have a NATO adapter that goes on the watch so the Citizen watch I have is called eco-Zila and you’re able to remove the lock pins, and swap it out for a solid one piece titanium adapter it fits perfectly into the old spring brackets, so there is no way it would fail unless all 6 screws on the back plate were to all come out. Really great watch, made of all titanium, the Ti model is discontinued, but they still make them is Stainless Steel, but those are 2x the weight.

Firefighters rarely get caught in flames, all skin is covered at all times in fire resistant clothing too.
With that being said why this man thinks NATO straps are superior for this specific application is odd, it's an outdoors strap that's where it works best, firefighters not sure about that and as you pointed out nylon wouldn't be a fun time however they don't show skin so shouldn't be an issue

The strap used by in Goldfinger wasn't a NATO strap but just a nylon strap. The strap James Bond was using is more like the nylon strap you would find on USGI watches of the time.

I'd like to think my Seiko SKX007(J) would be somewhere on that list Stu?
As well as being bomb-proof, an SKX really IS bullet-proof: I bought mine after seeing one encased in clear resin with an Afghan 7.62x39mm AK round that it had stopped buried into it, behind the bar in the NCO's Mess at a Military Establishment in the UK.
The impact smashed the guy's wrist, but that SKX saved his life because apparently from the angle that it hit his watch, he'd figured-out that it would've caught him somewhere between the top-edge of his body-armour and his jaw, so that would've been a very bad day at the office for him indeed...
      Cheers from the UK 👍

Ok, so , apparently I have a concept that will be a real treat for everyone who is reliant on a watch . My desire to help and my desire to make money to not be dirt poor even out. While I know this will be marketed soon after i say it , as happens regularly for me. Gunsmithing saves the day once again. Remove the band retaining pins .
Drill a hole through both pin retention tabs , just continue the existing blind holes for the pins until through the tabs. Find a set of machine screws that are long enough to span the gap , thread the far tab to fit the screw threads, drill the near side to outside diameter of the threads. Now take some thin tubing or a roll pin that is long enough to spawn the internal tab gap, slide the screw through the hole in the tubing or roll pin and thread into the other tab. Now one you make sure it fits and screws down properly, leave the new pin in place and drill a vertical hole in the smooth tab side. Allowing a small divot to be formed on the pin itself. Thread and set screw or blind pin that vertical hole . Now good luck loosing that ! Red Locktite is recommended if you don't need to change the band often. Though a belt and suspenders approach , this will retain the pin and band through basically any situation. A more complex and expensive way is to use a self captive pin with a push button detent release on one side. For quick band release if need be.
If you need me to re explain because you want to do this to your watch, let me know. I am trying to balance info given with comment length.

Those were my dad's favorite watch straps too. Just because he had 4" wide wrists and these straps come in many length.

Pretty much every watch I own with the exception of my dress watch has a NATO strap. However, for the most part I do agree that NATO straps do reduce the risk of losing your watch, I actually lost a watch while having it on a NATO. It was winter and under my bulky parka, both pins popped and when I went to check the time, all that was left was a NATO strap on my wrist less my dive watch. I now make it a point to give the watch strap a good tug at both lugs before putting it on. The strap didn’t fail, just the lugs.

Bertucci watches have built in pins so the breakage isn’t an issue. Though they do use the same style strap.

I had a completely different band that seemed better. it used velcro, the watch was held by the pins, and the strap wraps around then covering the entire watch protecting the face. Made from 2" cargo straps. I haven't seen one in years

I found a Seiko like thats thinking I was cleaning up the ocean from some trash. Someone thought it was a good idea to use a Casio strap. Sadly after a few years of wearing it I had a new battery installed and it wasn’t sealed properly. I lost my conversation piece to water intrusion.

It got popular after 1963 James bond movie goldfinger where he was wearing a nato strap watch. British military only got one if the filled out a G1098 file to aquire one I believe is the correct numbers. But they didn't Invent it or design or have any part in it start in the world they simply adopted it into British military in 1974 as an option for any soldier they filled out the proper paper work to get it. And if you read anything from b4 1974 after 74 and from American forestry services nothing says tucking in the tail like that is proper technique for anyone wondering

NATO straps also make your spring bars more likely to fail by putting more pressure on them than a traditional strap or bracelet. While overall they probably provide more security, they often create their own problem.

If it was made from a fire resistant material maybe it would be better suited. Nylon tends to melt and I can imagine working around a forest fire it is a possibility that it would come into contact with something hot and you wouldn't want that melting on your skin out in the middle of nowhere

    • @wranglerstar

What melts first, skin or nylon? If it's hot enough to melt nylon you're already dead,

@@wranglerstar I wrote it because I thought of Heat Straps that are made for use by firefighters. The work conditions are probably vastly different but I don't have experience in either field and meant it more as a question. Same way a lot of military uniforms are made to be non drip so that in case something burning was to come into contact with them they don't melt on your skin

Actually you are not supposed to tuck the end in on the inside. The purpose of the two loops are to be able to run the excess strap up though and then down again on the outside, but still inside the loops. This was made so that in battle it would be easier for medics to remove a watch because you just hade to tug och the end to make the whole watch come loose.
