I always loved Lewis county. My Dad always told me stories of the hills and how remote Lewis County was back in the day. We lived in Maysville, the next county to the west. Great deer hunting. Moonshiners and gardeners in the hills. There are a few bigfoot stories i remember. Great area.

JC video was a theater from about the 1930’s to about 1983. JC Video started about 1990.
Vanceburg used to have a swimming pool, drive in theater, a Ford dealership and a GM dealership. Those all disappeared in the 70’s. I can remember Saturday mornings in Vanceburg were very crowded with shoppers back then. Most of that Stamper Block was a large store named “Bakers”. It was a large draw. Not now. Like most places, it’s all gone to Wal Mart, Kroger, etc.
In the early 80’s, that park you showed at the end was just an empty lot. We played a lot of wiggle ball games there. We would go to Osman’s and buy a ball and bat and wound put electrical tape on the bat and ball. When they renovated the Harmany House building back about 2007, they found about 30 taped wiffle balls on the roof. 😆

It’s so sad to see such a beautiful place fade away. We’re retired and we’re looking at some properties near there but I don’t know now. I just can’t see anything bringing these rural towns back. I’m not even sure what’s killing them. Thanks for sharing.

I bought a house here in Lewis county last year. Northern Kentucky kid so I knew nothing about small town. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s truly on the verge of being a ghost town.

I live and work in Lewis County. I know it’s frying up rapidly but I was so excited to see this video. Lets me know there are still people out there who appreciate our little town. Hopefully something changes and gets things on track to making the town somewhere prosperous again. I have always lived about 25 min outside of town except for when I lived in the apartments behind Steve’s Market for about 3 years, but Vanceburg has always been “town” to me.
I’m assuming you lived in Vanceburg when you were growing up? Very neat! Subscribed and will be checking out your other videos!

I love this video. My grandparents used to live about 20 minutes outside of Vanceburg and my parents and I would visit there multiple times a year when I was little. There used to be a 4th of July festival right on the water that we would go to every year because of the firework show they put on, still one of the best I’ve seen. My grandpa has since passed away and my grandma has alzheimers and has lived with my aunt and uncle for close to 10 years now. They had to sell the house and I haven’t been there since, over a decade at this point. Thank you for showing us around ❤

Watched this and you said you lived here. Wish you knew more about the history. What’s your last name? You did a pretty good job still.

My Uncle, PFC Russell Payton, should be on that WW2 memorial. I'm not 100% sure as I have personally never saw it. However, he was born in Lewis County on December 26th 1918, grew up on the Payton farm McDowells Creek Rd near Garrison, KY. As of tomorrow, 05/29/2023 - Memorial Day, it will be exactly 80 years to the day that he was killed in action in the Battle of Attu of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska.
