The next state up will be Virginia! If you're from Virginia, please respond to this comment with any information you'd like to include about your home state!
As a Virginian, it should be important to note that there are families, such as my family, that have been here for three centuries or longer.
For instance, the Washington and Lee families have been here since the 1640’s and came here as a direct result of the English Civil War and Oliver Cromwell’s actions against King Charles I. Many of them were Caviliers - loyalists to Charles I - who fled to Virginia to escape Cromwell’s purges, since Virginia, at the time, was the most developed of the colonies and aligned itself with Charles I.
My family, however, weren’t a part of the first families. They were French Huguenots who’d fled from France during their up-tick in persecutions by the French Monarchy and were given land in Virginia to settle down. Ever since then, some moved out west while others stayed in Virginia.
To say the least, Virginia is my home and I have a deep connection to it, which most others in the United States might not truly appreciate nor understand.
One interesting thing about Virginia is their administrative divisions. Cities are carved out to be separate entities from counties, and as a result, a "county map" of Virginia includes many city-county borders in it as well.
Also, a fun trivia fact is that the westernmost county of Virginia (Lee County) sits entirely west of the state of West Virginia.

I live in DC but spend a fair amount of time in northern, VA. I suggest covering places like Mt. Weather, Luray Caverns, Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive.
I think it’s definitely important to mention how different the state can be on different sides. The northern (more like northeast but most ppl just say northern or nova, including counties like fairfax, arlington, loudoun) VA area (mostly DC suburbs) is a very rich and extremely fast growing area with companies like Amazon coming with their 2nd hq. But when you go to the opposite southwest side is actually some of the poorest areas of the entire US and the atmosphere is significantly different within Appalachia. Having been on both corners of the state and living there my entire life the geography is definitely something important because it’s clear to see how the eastern part of the state is a lot more city/suburban while the central and western is divided with a lot more rural areas and being heavily mixed into Appalachia.
Fun fact, in southern NH, you'll be walking through the woods and find a lot of granite stone fences. Most of southern NH used to be clear cut farmland, so these walls you find everywhere in the woods were field and property lines
they also extend all the way up to beyond mid way through the state, can find tons of random little things left behind from way back to before ww2, also whole frames/floors of houses made of the same stones

The reason the walls were made out of these stones specifically is because after cutting down the hundreds, if not thousands of trees, there were all of these large rocks laying in the fields, so they used them for their walls, just took a hundred or more years for the forest to spring back up where it was cut down
They are called stone walls, and in part served as property markers among other things. About 100 years ago, NH was about 30% covered with trees, and the rest was farmland, sheep, and cattle land. As NH moved from farming and industrial to the information age, that percentage changed and we are now about 70 or 80% covered with trees.

Fellow lifer here - it was probably the best video on the state that I've seen. He forgot to mention the state flower - the orange cone, which blooms all spring and summer, causing traffic jams and confused tourists to stop and gaze on almost every street!

Another fact about New Hampshire: The New Hampshire House of Representatives has the lowest representative ratio of any state legislative chamber. For every state representative there are approximately 3,000 constituents. For reference, the average in most states is 56,000. There's an argument to be made that you have the best government representation in New Hampshire.

I was born and raised in Plymouth New Hampshire. I love it here. We have very very low crime rates generally speaking in new hampshire. Tax-free except for room and board and prepared meals taxes. We have very friendly gun laws here. I've carried a concealed firearm for most of my life. Never had to use it either. Four beautiful seasons. And depending on where you are in the state depends on the accent that you hear. Here in New England there are a couple dozen different accents. I went down to Florida a few years back and everybody thought I was from boston. It was amusing. Stay safe out there and God bless

Regarding famous Granite Staters, you should have mentioned that one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Aerosmith, has its origins in Sunapee, NH. It is where Steven Tyler and Joe Perry met, as their families both vacationed regularly at the lake in the summers when they were growing up. Steven Tyler still maintains a residence on the lake.

I’m from Oxnard California. Not too far from LA. I’m a trucker and in 2018 I drove through 38 states.. nowadays I drive only in my city. Out of all those states, to this day I still loved New Hampshire the most .. I briefly saw it in The autumn of that year. Apparently it was the “blood brook” in Wilton New Hampshire.. since then I’ve wanted to go back and explore that state. Despite the fact in Northern California we have a lot of gorgeous scenery as well.

I'm from the greater Boston area in Mass. but have spent a ton of time in the Whites and Monadnock (the latter of which I think is one of the busiest mtns in the world, let alone the region and country)
The 231 mph winds on Mt. Washington are the fastest ever recorded, I beleive, due to strong, cold winds from the north and west being funneled through the rest of the white mtns and converging on the summit, which is considerably taller than any of it's neighbors. As mentioned by Carter, this makes the weather on the Presi range pretty volatile (a young woman and a mid age man recently died on the Ridgeline when frosty conditions kicked in swiftly, so be careful. Listen to the signs, it really is the worst weather in the country).
Still, it's an amazing natural area. I highly recommend visiting around "Columbus day", aka mid October. Mild temperatures and serviceable weather mean excellent hiking conditions through bueatiful forests, which turn ablaze with autumn

Missed opportunity to mention was America's Stonehenge located in Salem, New Hampshire. It's an ancient astrological site possibly dating back to as early as 2000 BCE. Its exact use and age is difficult to determine as the site was also the location of a farm house as well as a stop on the Underground Railroad. There has been a lot of damage to the site though much of the astrological stone formations are still present.
I'm a native New Yorker who has lived in NH (just north of Portsmouth) for the past 33 years. An observation I've made during that time is that the characteristic "yankee" accent that used to be so prevalent in the region has disappeared among the younger folks here...your guest being a good example. It is now only found among the senior citizens in the region.

Lived in NH my whole life in the northern regions outside Berlin. Fantastic state to live in if you love nature and conserving it. Very relaxed state with the lowest crime rate. People are normally very nice but private.
I am from Maine but could see Mount Washington from my bedroom window while I was growing up and yes, we felt the cold raw wind from it all Winter. I descend from First Settlers and Native People of New Hampshire.

I live on the border of Maine and NH. I was born in NH as the hospital was closer than any in ME. 73 years later I returned to my home and retired. I went to the hospital for a test and the registration desk asked if I had ever been admitted to the hospital before. I said yes but it wascso long ago they probaby did not have the record. She asked what year. Imsaid I was adnitted on and gave my birthday. Took about a minute to find my record. 😂😅😊

I am originally from Boston but have spent more than half my life in NH and I love it here. Low crime. great services, close to Boston, the White mountains, the Mananocks, the Green Mountains. Montreal and Quebec City, the ocean, 4 seasons. What's not to love.

Excellent video. As an avid hiker quite familiar with the White Mountains, it might have been interesting to add how the some of the worlds oldest hiking trails (like the Crawford Path) and hiking clubs (AMC) began in NH.
Great video. My home state. Fun fact: The photo at 24:08 is looking East down Main Street in Durham. You might notice the odd purple colored building, while it's now been torn down the reason this building is purple is that it used to be a frat house and they reached out to the town to request the addition of building a deck, but were denied their permit because the building was considered 'historic.' As any good college students would do they rebelled and realized that they WERE allowed to repaint the house so they picked the most hideous color that they could in protest! Of course money speaks, and when a developer wanted to build more housing, they had no problem at that time tearing down the house.

History: NH used to be part of Massachusetts up to Hampton. Then the small towns broke off and Seabrook and Hampton Falls became their own towns.
I grew up in Dover and spent most of my time in Portsmouth new Hampshire... It's a great place and I do love it here in this state
I'm a resident Bay Stater but I spent a lot of summer vacations in the White Mountains. What a beautiful place. I'd definitely recommend if you like to hike, camp and do anything regarding outdoor sporting.
I live in Dover after many years in NYC and abroad. I am always tickled by the fact that Dover was founded in 1623, oldest settlement in NH and just a few years after the pilgrims landed at Plymouth, MA. Guess the folks who managed to survive those first few hard winters in Plymouth thought it was fair game to try their luck further north in the unexplored wilderness. Live free or die, indeed!

No, actually the Separatist and Pilgrims that landed in Plymouth, mostly stayed. Europeans continued to sail across the pond the next year and following years for opportunity for land and prosperity. Saint Ann (later Salem) Boston and other colonies popped up quickly. Dover started as an outpost/fishing port by Hildon (Hilton Park at Dover Point) and continued to grow as did, Portsmouth (Puddledock, Strawberry Bank) and New Castle all settled in 1623. David Thompson is recognized as settling these areas in 1623.
As a 50 year NH resident I can say great job on representing the state. One thing you could improve is matching the pictures with the commentary, e.g. you have the picture of Mt. Monadnock on the screen for what seems like several minutes, then you mention it after the picture is no longer on the screen; ditto for the Cog Railway on Mt. Washington.
This video is making me want to visit New Hampshire even more and eventually hike up Mount Washington.
For those of us on the rescue squad, please properly prepare for it.
You can hike one way and take the cog railway down, to give you both experiences. Be prepared, as even on warm days below, the top can be very cold and challenging. Still has the highest wind recording in the USA weather history at 134 mph.

@@shanesmokes6447 🤣🤣Perhaps, butvthe only weird mountain people I ever experienced were in TN - "Deliverance Country", (though the movie was filmed in GA). I have hiked extensively in WA, OR, CA, CO and VT, NH, and Maine, and have had no bad experiences - other than getting caught in a cold rain or snow at high elevations.

Speaking of Hampton Beach...that's where Aerosmith got their start. My sister was one of their first groupies, and I knew their first album by the time it went nationwide. I heard "Dream On" on the radio and wondered why Aerosmith was on the radio. (Didn't hear this till we'd moved to Mississippi, so it wasn't even a local -- to me -- station!) Sadly, her autographed LP melted in the MS sun :(

Beautfiul scenery up here just a major drug issue in a lot of the cities specifically Manchester. And the homeless population in Concord the capital city is crazy.
Not really sure why opioids are so big in NH, nor being homeless in Concord (that must be unpleasant in winter, and the Left Coast states are so coddling to that, they might want to re-locate!).

@@emrazum There are big differences between the Left Coast and just about everywhere else with the homelessness. While no state is devoid of drugs, I am surprised that a state with a high quality of life, well-educated and the lowest poverty rate in the nation would be in the top 3 for opioid abuse.

Bordering a high tax state, lots of Massachusetts people (massholes, in the local dialect) drive across the border for a lower tax life, with their same high paying Boston jobs. In southern New Hampshire towns like Dover and Portsmouth (especially Dover in the last four years), Massachusetts people have wrecked the local economies and infiltrated the local governments to create higher taxes and increase the democrat voting block. The change in local culture and policy has caused a rift to form between northern New Hampshire residents and southern New Hampshire residents, and long-time southern New Hampshire residents against out-of-towners.
Massachusetts has reached a new low. Historically, if your employer was in Mass but you worked 3 days in MA and 2 at home in NH (or any other state) only 60% of your salary was taxed for Mass income tax purposes. If you always worked from home, you didn't pay Mass tax. For Covid, they decided to say that they don't care where you worked - your income is taxable in Mass if prior to the pandemic you routinely commuted to Mass. It's absolute bullshit. You don't live there or work there so you don't pay tax there. That's the law.
Of course they didn't announce this until 2020 had ended. That state is so sleazy. They won't win this one, and when everyone files for their refunds in 5 or 6 years, after the Supreme Court has thrown it out, they're going to heap more taxes on their citizens to cover the massive payouts they'll owe.
Mass politicians are the worst of the worst.
True they also are in the top finals for driving 20 miles before the speed limit tied with New york which are both assholes mass or not.
But at the same time Salem , NH needs the business from mass to sustain the development it’s had in the past few years idk.

I am from Claremont New Hampshire originally. It is a major small city that is 5 miles from interstate 91 in Vermont. Claremont is another area you should check out. It is in the upper valley. Lake and Mt. Sunapee are near there.

I love New Hampshire. I just went back there for a few days and I can't wait to go back. I love hiking at the basin, beaver lake is really pretty, funspot-biggest arcade in the world, lake Winnepesauki is beautiful and my favorite candy store-Chutters.

I really enjoyed this video. Although we are from New York my son went to college at Keene State College. He met his fiance there (she's from New Jersey) and they are still there. He works for UNH and she works for USNH. They live in Rockingham County. My in laws own a cottage in Hampton Beach NH. It really is a beautiful state.
I hope this channel grows. This project has a ton of potential.
My ancestors founded areas here before it was NH. After 20 years living in NYC, I came back to live in a neighborhood where nobody locks their doors.

Great video. I have lived nearly my whole life in Vermont but also spent a lot of time in NH. Thanks for also mentioning the NH astronauts Shepard and McAuliffe, who are both honored at the Discovery Center spaceflight museum in Concord, a great attraction in the capital city which I highly recommend. The Mt Washington cog railway is also great, and lots of amusement and water parks also in the northern region around Franconia Notch, Crawford Notch, and Pinkham Notch, which attract many tourists and locals.

It rained all day but was still ok.
It stoped long enough to get food n eat outside n walk the beach for a mile or so with the kids.

I love NH. Constitutional carry of firearms. Legal to shoot in our backyards where it`s safe of course. It is quite diverse. Each town may be left or right politically. I love the peace and quiet and low crime where I am.

15:32 - It is Dartmouth COLLEGE, not Dartmouth University. Even though it really is a university, it retains 'College' in its name for historic purposes.
Another notable resident is Randy Pierce, from Colebrook NH, up north. He lost his sight when he was young but now hikes the mountains and runs marathons with the help of his seeing eye dogs. He's an incredible guy

Great video, but at 15 mins, you show a pic of the Boston Skyline and say its from Mount Monodonock. You cannot see Boston from Mount Monodonock, that pic was taken from Mount Kearsarge, off highway 89 in Warner NH. Mount Kearsarge is the most prominent peak in NH because none of the surrounding mountains are nearly as tall.

Id say Portsmouth is one of the bigger towns in NH. I love it there though. Awesome town to bar hop on new years eve.

No denying Portsmouth is great, but it's not a small town, figuratively or literally. It's a city. Greenland is more of a small town, and even that isn't especially small.

I explore statewide. The most unique thing in my opinion is walking the Fourth Connecticut Lake trail. One foot could be in NH while the other foot's in Canada. I always found that cool! Yes, there IS a Fourth!
Other cool things not many mention is: the Underground Railroad runs through it, the Appalachian Trail runs through it, the remnants of the ancient Ossipee volcano that's studied by volcanologists worldwide, home of America's Stonehenge, Mt Washington's erratic weather due to two critical air streams crossing right over it, the invention of Tupperware and the alarm clock, our space successes (first American in space, first teacher in space, various famous UFO sightings), our super cool gems and old-growth forests, etc.
Commonly mispronounced words: Kancamagus, Milan, Moosilaukee, Winnepesaukee which the narrator nailed, Piscataqua and Piscataquog which the narrator nailed again, Coos, Chocorua, Pemigewasset, Umbagog, among a few others. 💗
I want to cry, this is my favorite state of all time, easily outclassing my home state of MA

As a lover of NH, I think you did a very good job in highlighting its history, development, sites and glimpses of many cities & towns. Keeping these videos to 30 minutes is important in capturing a large audience. As a libertarian and freedom-lover, no motto in American can natch New Hampshire's. I hope the influx of Massho.es will never destroy that ethic, as NH does not want Left po.itics and all the misery it brings. Portsmouth is my favorite town in New England, and it's location midway between Boston and Portland, ME makes it ideal. There is plenty of culture nearby and a great food scene. You perhaps could have mentioned the Peterborough Colony and Cornish, where the famous sculptor, St Gaudens came from. It does have a great quality of life - with the long winters being the turn-off. I intend to reside 8 months in Charleston or Beaufort in SC and the other 4 on a NH lake. I have been a fan of all teams Boston for 50+ years,too. After traveling to all 50 states, I find it hard to beat the combo of Charleston & the SC Lowcountry and NH. Both states are well-run and value freedom, and have lots of varied natural beauty to offer. Thanks for the video!
A lot of people move to New Hampshire because of the slogan, live free or die, with no sales tax, no seat belt laws, or insurance it really feels like you're living free then you can die happy
Unfortunately, that attraction has brought a lot of idiots to the state where many laws are forced to be created to keep the state from burning down (sometimes literally - there haven't always been regulations on backyard fires)

You don't need insurance if your car is paid for. Any lender will force insurance as a loan requirement. Also, you don't need insurance, but you better not get into an accident if you don't have it. You WILL be deemed at fault (unless you're rear ended) and you will have to pay the other party's insurance company. Don't pay? You'll lose your license and your right to register any vehicle.

Just as a quick note to the part on taxes, we also have no income tax in addition to no sales tax. And politicians take an oath to not introduce new taxes before running for office.
NH also has the 3rd lowest Tax burden per capita in the US as well as the 3rd highest per capita average income. and they have a Part Tine Legislature who get paid around $300 a year,

After John Mason fought against the Pequots at Mystic fort, he became a founder of Norwich, Ct. My 9th great grandfather was at the battle, and was a founder of Norwich with Mason. He became the progenitor of 10 generations of military men, and northern state pioneers all the way to Washington, where I was born.
Most of NH town names are from England that is why New England if named after. I've lived in Seabrook my home town now live in Rochester. Great state I used to like the winter but now getting older I don't like the winter. Fall is my favorite time of the year, the color of leaves and the climate it just right.
