They're all so cruel to him because he's not handsome or rich enough. He's the male equivalent of the Bennett women who, in reality, would have all died spinsters. The disdain shown to LIzzie by Darcie at the beginning was a more realistic portrayal of how a poor, average looking woman like her would have been treated by a man of his stature. Collins is in a similar position- but his situation, his desperation is played for laughs.
