- WHITBY at Christmas time is magical. The Christmas shopping in the town is fantastic and the whole of Whitby is lit up with Christmas lights and this North Yorkshire seaside town comes alive.
In this video we will walk from the beach through the town to Whitby Abbey steps and answer the question what is Whitby like in winter.
We being this walking tour on Whitby pier overlooking the beach and walk along past the Magpie Fish and chips restaurant, the amusement arcades and the food and drink shops and bars to the harbour.
Here we head into Whitby Town Centre where the shops are lit up bright before coming round and crossing the swing bridge that opens up to let boats through, before passing the dolphin pub and heading into the old town to wander the narrow cobbled streets to have a look at the shops.
Nothing beats a trip to Whitby for a day by the seaside but Whitby in winter is just magical!
Let's explore!

I believe you have a great mind and being brave. Would glad to be a ‘message pal,’ of sorts . . .
@@ianstewartorr8455
What's your favorite kind of season?
@@ianstewartorr8455 oh, okay. I've never been to UK before but I'm sure it's a nice place to be. I would love to visit the United Kingdom.
Love Whitby with a passion, it's so mystical n magical, I've been 3 times this year, beautiful video thank you Xxx 💖💖💕
Love Whitby, a long time since I’ve been. Need to go and walk up those steps to the abbey. I enjoyed the night time video.
I enjoy all your videos of Whitby. Visited in October and hope to again when I’m back in 2024.
Thank you so much!
It's such a great place
I drove through Whitby about 3.30am this morning on my way home from work!
Crikey - bet it was quiet!
@@GimbalWalkTV few drunk people about trying to get a taxi 🚖😂.
Another great & fantastic video of WHITBY at Christmas Time i went with my brothers once for a day!.❤❤💛💛💙💙🤎🤎
Nice! 👍👍❤️❤️
Hello Neil how are you gone to my favourite place Whitby looks more Christmas there then Bakewell love your vidio hopefully me and our Elaine are hoping to get there next year best wishes take care stay safe xx
Well thanks for that trip Gimbal, really enjoyed seeing the shop windows, which you can't even get near in August. The Black Horse has not been refurbished - still pretty old inside, that and The Endeavour is where you would catch me during the Festival, lots of lovely walks around the town. Thanks again ✔💯
Keep em coming Mr Walk 🚶
👍👍😄😄💟
Fab video what more can I say. Everything about it is so professional and clear cut keep up the great work and keep on walking 👍❤️🚶🏻
Thank you! Will do!
I love Whitby went here with my parents for the day in 2021 whilst we holidayed in Scarborough
I love your channel , this has made me want to visit Whitby nearer Christmas 🎅
Loved the video have never been to Whitby but it looks a lovely old fashioned town.❤️❤️
Absolutely love Whitby..we were married there and have a two week holiday every year..beautiful place xx
I love all of your videos Neil! They are very enjoyable. I am here in the USA, but I think England is so beautiful! I would love to visit there someday. Thank you so much for filming these lovely places for all of us!!
You have got to do it, plan for it and go to places like Whitby, Cumbria,,York and Chatsworth House in Derbyshire, you wont be disappointed.
Hello, how is it now in your neck of the woods?
@@robertmontane Chilly, but no snow. That is just fine with me. The no snow part that is!😊
Whitby is a beautiful seaside town my favourite of them all but what makes it even better is at night it's got it's creep factor yea it's got it ghost's me an my wife have been there a few times and I can say I've seen a couple of things but yea grate place to visit
It's a shame you didn't head up Golden lion bank onto Flowergate and then onto Skinner Street..some good little shops there too!
I think I know where you mean
I think I went up there on my last one
Will definitely cover it on my next one because like you say some good shops there!
Only see whitby when people are showing on YT and not many Christians lights on and hope you have a hot drink afterwards and merry Christmas to you both and nice to hear the seagulls and busy traffic a bit chilly
its so peaceful when the tourists are absent.
Very true
We visited in 1999, and fell in love. Would do anything to go back and stay longer. Did the steam train to Goathland, what a beautiful day we had.
. . . and just before that white teddybear there is a shop which sells (at least inAugust they did!) hot drinks, quite cheap, and I get my daily Hot Chocolate there, I go to Whitby once a year for the Folk Festival in August ... great music in all the pubs - youu aint seen nuffin' till you go there then 😄😄😄
I believe Grassington - where the exterior shots for the new All Creatures Great and Small series is filmed - does a Dickens Christmas theme in December as well. You could stay in York and do Whitby one day and Grassington the next.
That sounds amazing! Going to look into that today
Thank you!
I’m amazed at how many of the shops have their doors wide open and it being so cold! What do they heat with? Also Whitby seems to be a very safe town. I would be hesitant to walk down dark side streets but then I’m American so ….. It is definitely a beautiful town and would be on my wish list of places to visit. Thanks for sharing and the camera is spectacular btw, next best thing to being there while staying warm. 😊
My favourite place back home. ❤
@@patriciathompson350 You’re very lucky!
I'm an American too, but, have always felt safe in England - even the East End of London. Whitby is a beautiful town. I had the privilege of visiting in May 2023. The only problem with Yorkshire is that it is so beautiful and interesting that you don't know where to start. I will be going back next year to see more of Yorkshire.
The old town is my favourite part too I always try and stay in a cottage in church street or off into one of the many alleys,I would love to own a cottage and have a real fire ,maybe one day 😁
Never been there lol I WANT TO thanks keep it up
Thank you so much Julie
This was my favorite Christmas video so far, maybe because its Whitby, a place I've longed to visit, its so old world, I love older shop fronts with displays anytime of year, but Christmas really adds to it, I love the cobbled streets the amount of chippys and just the general atmosphere in this video, it makes me want to visit Whitby in the off season. Thanks Neil I loved the lighting and new camera. Loved it.
Next up for me is Bakewell, a place I've been to many times when over the years, I know it will be lovely.
Thank you so much
I'll get better too once I've figured out all these camera settings!
This August I bought three pair of shoes in Shoe Zone: pumps, trainers and slip-on trainers ‼️ Very cheap and lasts for a long time, too 👍 It's just past Papa's, which has not been there very long ...
an extremely beautiful place, I wish all towns would light up the same way.
Same - would be lovely if everywhere was like this
Thank You so Much for this Lovely Video of My Beloved Whitby!! Watching this has Truly made my Day! Who Could not Love this Beautiful Place!!! I particularly Loved the Transformation from Day to Night! Seeing all the Lovely Lights is just Beautiful. Luckily I don't live to far away from here, love to have Fish & Chips for Lunch at the Fisherman's Wife on the Kyber Pass & a Drink in The Duke of York. Hope You had something Nice to Eat & a Drink, so Well Deserved. Excellent Filming with Your New Camera too!
Thank you so much Susan.
Not been in the Duke Of York yet but will try it now you've mentioned it!
Beautiful indeed ... i 1st discovered Whitby over 60 yrs ago as a Boy Scout when we came for our weeks camping trip & was blown away !!!
Fab isn’t it!
Have been to Whitby a couple of times in the summer on walking holidays. The scenery in and around Whitby is amazing. Favourite places include the coast between Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay, Goathland and the surrounding moors and Roseberry Topping.
Mint video, grew up around this coast, as a family of 7 in a Bedford van 🤕🥺. A domestic due to the small street's being steep and hope of good brakes. Mostly I remember Hornsea Pottery's plenty to do there too. What is the dog attacks about? best carry a stick 🥺. Will be looking at all your vids now thankyou for a memory walk 😊
Thank you so much. I love this part of the world so I'll be filming around there often
Best fish and chips ever around this area as a local is maid Marion fisheries in robin hoods bay , second best Railway chippy in Whitby !!!
Lovely video neil never been this time of year so quite the side streets r so nice thanks for showing it
My pleasure 😊
came here too in summertime. Did the 99 steps :)
Nice one - that's a tough ask sometimes to get up those!
Great video. A lovely and clean place.
It really is!
Good idea filming in winter very different 👍 love all the lights in twilight.😄
Thanks! 😊
Your camera is very professional Neil. Sorry you got bit twice. I got stung twice on my visit to Nunnington Hall. The wasps had nested in the scarecrow. We visited a couple of years ago and decided next time we would stay lower down. It was a bit of a hike going up and down from west cliff. It’s great with what they’ve done with Alberts and the food was good. You can’t beat the Magpie Cafe though for fish and veggie cottage pie. Big portions!
Wasps hiding in a scarecrow eh! That's sneaky of them!!
I'm not a fan of wasps - they scare me to bits 🤣
Absolutely lovely Neil but what have you got on your feet? Not your famous white trainers!!
Just watched Scarborough, gorgeous! And Rotherham!!! What a shame. It was really sad to see it so quiet
Keep up the good work xxx
My big black snow boots
They’re too hot though!
Great fiming, video footage is good with your new camera, good focusing, I take it , you used the Sony alpha?
I think I did this one with the Sony FX3
I've tweaked the settings since then so the next few videos 'should' be even better!
Great Walk...👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🤾♂️🏃🤾♀️🤾♂️
Thank you!
I didn’t rate the magpie that good mind it was takeaway but I much prefer mr chips not the one on pier road the one at end of church street also the fisherman’s wife is another favourite to mine and Hadley’s ,we go every year for up to a week ,only once been at this time of year and had a lovely day my son and 2 year old grandaughter that was 6 years ago had a relaxing day Xmas shopping for last bits and a lovey tea of fish and chips at mr chips
Love whitby I agree with you magpie cafe fish and chips are the best some years ago I queued for 45 minutes to get a table was worth it I walked up the steeps codnt do it know
Ha ha I know what you mean!
Years ago my friend and I qued for about an hour ,we were starving walked away with our fish and chips tucking in quite happily strolling along to get a seat and eat them looking out to see….then a seagull decided to go to the toilet on my friends fish 😂😂😂😂he was furious at the time but laughs about it now ,I shared mine though cos we wernt gonna stand another hour
Just after Hopes&Beans you panned to the right to a pathway (@ 19.37) where, if you had gone up there, you would come to the real high street . . . I was hoping you would show us that ... hey ho 😒
Never ever gonna go in Magpies for F&C, far too expensive, the cheapest is down the road past Tiffins on the right - can't remember name 👍
Definitely a lot quieter than when I went in the summer. Do they have Christmas lights in Filey?
One of your best! Have you ever done Holy Island? - well worth a visit.
Not yet no - whereabouts is it?
Northumberland, 10 miles South of Berwick On Tweed, approached by a causeway which gets flooded twice a day by the North Sea!
Where that new coffee shop is hopes and beans ,was that a clothes shop? Trying to think what was there
Just for you I've had a look back through old Whitby videos I filmed
In 2020 it was' The Bridge' cafe
In 2018 it was just closed down
I don't have any videos before that sadly!
What a sad site. Shops open and no one there. It’s lot different on Hallowe’en!!
That's English seasides for you!
I really don't think your new camera was up to that job, constantly going out of focus. For that kind of money, I'd be so disappointed and demanding my money back. Still enjoyed the video, as I do with all your walks, keep up the good work. 🙂
Oh it's not he camera Ian it's the operator (e.g. me!) who set all the wrong settings
Because it was so new I couldn't resist going out and about with it before reading the manual
I've sorted it now - so much better now I've set the right auto-focus settings
@@GimbalWalkTV Excellent. I look forward to seeing the results in due course.
The magpie is over rated, not the best, the most expensive maybe!used to go there all the time I live 30 miles away ,until I heard locals calling visitors plebs behind their backs, never went again.were the drains still stinking?
We go every year myself and grandchildren and stay either 7 or 4 nights in a cottage ,we like to try different ones ,few years ago we went
Stayed in one and the man next cottage up had lived in whitby all his life and in that cottage,he told me the cobbles in church street were not original and were laid so many years ago and that the whole of whitby were sick of bloody tourist spoiling the town and having no respect and using it on a weekend to get drunk and cause havoc😳he was a right moaning mini,he spoke every day but also whinged every day,.if it wernt for tourist whitby wouldn’t be as it is,with all the shops and tourist keeping them earning
Also love Whitby! Fisherman's Wife on Khyber Pass is also cracking fish & chips, and other high class seafood (crabs, lobsters etc) too.
