- Whitby in North Yorkshire is one of the UK's most visited seaside resorts. It's well-known for its connections with Dracula and Capt Cook, and its bi-annual Goth Weekend event. But, the town is steeped in an amazing amount of fascinating history.
In this video I explore five of its less well-known subjects, all linking back to the brilliant Whitby Museum (@whitbymuseum7882). There's tales of local folklore and witchcraft, as well as significant connections to World War 2 and the birth of palaeontology.
Special thanks to the staff, curators and trustees at Whitby Museum (www.whitbymuseum.org.uk) for their cooperation with research and filming. Also a big thanks to Ryedale Folk Museum (www.ryedalefolkmuseum.co.uk) and Bannial Flatt Cottages ( profile.php?....

You really should be on TV doing these programmes.
The benches on the side of the 199 steps, were to allow pallbearers to put the coffin on so they can have a rest on the way up. Great video 2x👍
Welcome back, Andrew. We've missed you. Very interesting post. More like this please.
I remember visiting the Whitby Museum many years ago. My lasting memory of it was there were more "Do Not Touch" labels than exhibit explanation labels.
Great video! I used to be co-curator of the Social History collection in Whitby Museum and the Hand was part of that collection...I absolutely detest it! I live in the house that William Scoresby lived in when he first came to Whitby, also known as Scoresby House, built in 1760, the year he was born. It stands on the harbour on the East side. In the adjoining yard he installed a pump for a well. It's in the Scoresby Room at the Museum and says something along the lines of "Draw water and drink, but don't stand around gossiping." 😂
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂 great story about your house! Thanks for leaving a comment.
Fantastic to see you back!
Geez what a coincidence. I only checked your channel yesterday thinking ‘I hadn’t seen a video for a while’ and bingo, here you are the next day.
A very enjoyable 15 minutes learning 5 things that I didn't know about Whitby { I don't know much about Whitby really }. Another well made and entertaining video from you and nice to see you back on UA-cam with your excellent presenting skills and interesting information.
Cheers Nigel! 👍🏼🙂
Within 30 seconds of the start I knew I was in for a professional production, and you delivered. Amazing work. Really interesting. Thank you very much.
Brilliant. So many things I never knew about the area I lived for almost 40 years.
Cheers Brian!
Very interesting indeed, Andrew. I did know about the German bomber, and I have looked in vain for years for the plaque as I knew that it existed. I now know what it looks like, thank you. The other 4 items were also very fascinating. Thanks for what you do, and here's to the next one!
Keep em coming Andrew, informative well presented.
Cheers Christopher 👍🏼
Another great episode, well worth the wait thanks
As always Andrew, a great video. Been way too long since our last one hoping it’s not as long before the next one. We love Whitby too but I have to say much of what you covered in this video I didn’t know so it was fascinating to learn such things. We do thank you for your time in creating such professional quality videos and appreciate just how much time and effort you put in to make them. Can’t wait for the next one to drop. Thanks again.
Thanks as always mate. Weather has stopped filming a few times this year, so I have loads planned for May, June & July! 🤞🏼
Welcome back, Andrew, and as usual, a brilliant film
Thanks Paul! 👍🏼
Brilliant video and i hadn’t heard of any of the story’s told, really enjoyed the tale of the German aircraft and where the term “hangover” comes from.
Cheers Ashley! Yes, the hangover story was a new one for me too 😆🍻
Thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening video.
Just flashed up on my notifications mate,so gonna watch this tonight on nightshift, love watching your videos, just reading the comments & next time i,m in whitby i,ll visit the museum,i only live half hour away,i,ve pulled up at the memorial for the german bomber & crew before & tried to line up the picture with the farmhouse & the hedge where the bomber laid, excellent channel mate. 👌👌❤️❤️

When I saw the hand, I thought hey up, whys the glove of self love in a museum in whitby.
Fascinating video Andrew, and great to see you back again.
One of the surviving Witch Posts is in the village of Marske. It's located in the village's museum which is house one of the few surviving cruik cottages
Sadly the museum was closed when we visited in September last year, but we'll be back in the future, great to have you back Andrew, looking forward to your next film.
Very interesting, never knew about the German plane. I live near kirkdale and know the story about what's been found in there but I didn't know the bones are in whitby museum.
Welcome back! Great video 👌🏻🙏🏻👍
Nice to see you back making videos and what an interesting video as always!

Good to have you back !!!
Your content makes me want to visit Whitby
Just found your channel & really enjoying your videos
Lots of memories of my favourite part of the British Isles I’m a regular visitor to Whitby
Yeah, it’s a special place. Glad you like the videos!
Very interesting and enjoyable video of two fascinating museums and their portrayal of Whitby's history. I liked the way you referenced the various exhibits to their local contexts, such as the whaling industry and Kirkdale caves.
Cheers Malcolm. Yes, that wasn’t the initial plan but as I started researching it just made sense to do it this way and show the different locations.
Well documented video as always thanks
Another fantastic video. Always good to learn new thing.
Thanks Harry! 👍🏼
Great video, great to see you back😊
Brilliant, channel. We always watch your videos. We were at Whitby Museum a couple of months ago. Some of your topics we did know and other's we didn't. Thank you for your efforts, it's so obvious how much work you but in to produce these excellent videos. Genuinely surprised local TV and Radio haven't snapped you up.
Thank you! Really appreciate your comments 👍🏼🙂

Cheers Jo! 👍🏼
Great material and well thought out.
Thanks Mike!
Welcome back. Hope you and your family are doing well. Thanks for your great videos. When David Attenborough retires, you can take over narrating those wildlife programs on bbc. Your voice is smooth and calming.
Thanks a lot mate! Hope you’re well 👍🏼
Didn't know about any of those, amazing! Keep going with the vids!
Cheers Edward! Plenty more coming this year 👍🏼
Great video Andrew
Cheers Malcolm 👍🏼
Very interesting! 👏🏻👏🏻
So enjoyable thank you
Excellent!!
Wow, interesting, thought I knew most things about whitby
Thanks Andrew. Been to whitby a few times but didn't know any of this.
Learned a lot myself doing this one!
Excellent but at times Creepy... Well done, Andrew! 🙃
Cheers Bryan! 👍🏼
Really interesting 👍😁
I love your videos of this area, I love Whitby but it’s too busy now, 30 years ago it was lovely, now it’s a bit too commercialised , I miss the old Whitby from when I was a kid
Very interesting,thanks
Nice one Andy very interesting 👍 ... ❤👵🐾🐾🐾🤠
Thanks mate! 👍🏼
Brilliant
I agree with all: lovely to have you back making videos. The Hand of Glory appears in the magic shop in The Chamber of Secrets (I'd doing this from memory) in the Harry Potter series. It is defined as you describe.
Cheers Diana. I didn’t realise that and I’ve watched it so many times. Will be looking out for it next time! 🖐️
@@NorthYorkshireWanderer I think the hand is in the film, but it is assumed you know what it is from the book.
445th 'like' from Sainsbury's petrol station in Scarborough! 👍🏻
Haha thanks mate!! 👍🏼
The candle on a Hand of Glory could only be extinguished with milk. Anyone awake in the household would remain awake and those asleep could not be roused.
More. More.
Excellent video as always. I thought the term 'hungover' derived from lines of rope used by the poor to literally hang over to sleep. Who knows? 😊
Cheers! I’ll admit, it was the first time I’d heard this version.
Another interesting video, I will definitely have a look at the museum next time I’m in Whitby. What do you think of the Scarborough zip line plans, shame it wasn’t a rejuvenation of the cable cars.
Just pleased something is going to be there. I don’t understand the councillors who voted against it.
It’s good to see private investment coming into the town, hopefully it encourages more.
I gather the RAF pilots visited the Germany flyers in Scarborough hospital and took them cigarettes and a bag of oranges !
For a while I lived in a flat that turned out to be the very room where bram stoker wrote his rather famous book, been in the museum many times 🙂
he wrote some in the royal hotel in whitby, I Know there was a guest house where he stayed on Royal Crescent, he wrote some of Dracula in a hotel in Scotland too. There is conflicting info saying where he started it. I always got told it was the royal hotel as he came up with the idea because of the view on a cold misty night looking at whitby abbey
I live just a few mins away from the plane site, drive by it quite alot...I didnt even know this story! and I was born in whitby!
I think there’ll be quite a few similar. I’m surprised local schools don’t include it when teaching kids about WW2.
@@NorthYorkshireWanderer yeah, you would think the schools would teach us! maybe we would be more interested in history at school then
How can you invent the crows nest, the idea that in thousands of years nobody climbed the mast and looked out is ridiculous.
But not the idea of a physical structure to enclose and protect the lookout.
A very interesting video. Btw, people are hanged, pictures are hung. 😇
This wonderful museum had an umbrella stand full of narwhal tusks to feel and observe.
Great video - instructive and fun - must have taken a ton of work to make. The AI that generated some of the ship images made some mildly amusing mistakes (bowsprits at both ends of the ship) but that's not a criticism and I learned a lot from the video.
Thanks! Yes, just started playing around with AI, could be useful in future.
Nice video, Where are you from? you say moor like moo-er like a lancastrian??
I’m from Middlesbrough and say it the same way
Cheers 👍🏼 originally from Middlesbrough.
are there any disused tunnels in Whitby either train or coal mines or smuglers
Hand of glory 😂
Typical !!!!! I was in Whitby on Thursday 11th. Knew none of this. Need to go back.
Perfect excuse to go back 🙂
Thank you.....
