How to win individual medley races. Why swimmers slow down and how take advantage of it

  • Swimming the individual medley is not easy. you must be good at all the four strokes or at least not have a very weak stroke. But you can always tell when someone slows down in their weakest stroke, usually breaststroke. To get good at your weakest stroke requieres a lot of time and practice but there is one thing you can get better at more quickly, transitions.
    Transitions in the individual medley are a weakness that many people have that normally we don’t think on improving, but you can drop a couple of seconds if you get them right.
    Usually, and this goes for normal flip turns too, beginners slow down in the turn. In fact they slow down before the turn. I suggest you speed up before entering a transition or a flip turn. To practice this is not enough to just start from behind the flags and swim to a fast turn, you must practice this every time you swim. because one of the reasons we slow down is fatigue and during a race you will be fatigued and won’t have time to think of any of this. We unconsciously think, there is a wall so I will get a mini rest for my arms and legs while I glide and push off the wall. So to get good at speeding up in the flip turns, you need to repeat to yourself “good, there is a wall, I’ll speed up and gain some advantage on my competitors” Then use that last two strokes to get yourself close to the wall fast and use your core to bring your legs to the wall and push off as hard as you can to then do some dolphin kicks or breaststroke pullout and do a few quick effective strokes.
    We have talked about all these transitions, so I’ll put a playlist at the end where you can learn each transition, specially the backstroke to breaststroke, which is the most challenging. But now let’s see some racing strategies that I suggest for each type of swimmer.
    If you are a butterflier you need to go out in front, so push yourself a little more than your competitors. Just enough to get ahead. Put in a lot of effort in your weakest stroke, which is usually breaststroke or backstroke and give everything you have left on the freestyle part.
    If you are a backstroker use the easy speed of the dive to get you to a comfortable but fast butterfly. Don’t get too far behind the butterfliers. Then push yourself on the backstroke and get ahead of them. I know your weakest stroke is breaststroke so don’t let them catch you before the freestyle.
    If you are a breaststroker you have a secret weapon. Try to stay close to everyone on the first half of the race and then blow past them in breaststroke and they won’t have enough energy to catch you on the freestyle.
    If you are a freestyler, do you even swim the individual medley? I don’t think so. I’m kidding. You are probably used to going out fast on the butterfly, but I suggest going easy on the butterfly and try to stay with everyone on the backstroke and breaststroke to get a chance to beat everyone on the freestyle.
    Remember, do not slow down on the transitions. Get to the wall quickly and use the momentum to get some advantage on your competitors. You can rest on the wall when you are done.

    Best strategy. Go out fast in the fly because you are fresh and the fly looks great in photos. Crush the backstroke because you can breathe all you want. Push hard in the breaststroke, because you aren’t any good at that stroke and pure bravery is all you have. In the freestyle, swim entirely on fear and loathing. They are coming, you hate to lose, and it’s too late to avoid the pain now.

    This is a fantastic video. My daughter swims I.M’s and is a reasonable all rounder but terrible in the transitions. Breath control is key for young swimmers in transitions also. Great video.

      Yes I am new to flipturns and I get really exhausted at or after flipturns even if I do medium speed. I think it’s because 1. I slow down towards the wall and 2. My flip speed is very slow because of lack of core agility. So it’s double the time with no breathing. 3. I have to think about it and it makes me ‚stressed‘ and ‚worried‘. That totally brings me out of my feeling and awareness. Also I learned that anxiousness lets my body flex/tighten backwards not forwards which is contrary. Folding/kneeling forward is a „relaxed“ body pose.
      One can consciously decide to ‚relax‘ and calm down. I made most !huge! success last year by concentrating on staying relaxed and calm. So I will try that on the flip next time, too!

    How to win individual medley races. Why swimmers slow down and how take advantage of it
    기억하십시오, 영법 전환에서 느려지지 마십시오. 벽에 재빠르게 다가가 그 타력(momentum, 모멘텀)을 이용해서 경쟁자들보다 유리해지십시오. 쉬는 것은 경기를 마치고 마지막 벽에서 할 수 있습니다.

      Don’t get too far behind the butterfliers.
      접영 선수들 한참 뒤로 처지지는 마세요.
      37
      00:02:35,273 --> 00:02:39,188
      Then push yourself on the backstroke and get ahead of them.
      그런 다음 배영 구간에서 힘을 내 접영 선수들을 앞서 가십시오.
      38
      00:02:39,267 --> 00:02:42,885
      I know that your weakest stroke is probably breaststroke.
      저는 십중팔구 평영이 당신의 가장 약한 영법이라는 것을 압니다.
      39
      00:02:42,924 --> 00:02:46,745
      So don’t let them catch you before the freestyle.
      그렇지만 자유형 전에 따라 잡히지는 마세요.
      40
      00:02:48,020 --> 00:02:50,970
      If you are a breaststroker you have a secret weapon.
      평영 선수라면 당신은 비밀 병기를 지녔습니다.
      41
      00:02:51,041 --> 00:02:54,287
      Try to stay close to everyone on the first half of the race.
      경기 전반부에는 다른 선수들에게 너무 뒤처지지 않으려고 노력하세요.
      42
      00:02:54,312 --> 00:02:56,843
      And then blow past them in breaststroke.
      그런 다음 평영 구간에서 다른 선수들을 제치고 나가십시오.
      43
      00:02:56,868 --> 00:03:00,847
      And they won’t have enough energy to catch you on the freestyle.
      그러고 나면 다른 선수들에게는 자유형에서 당신을 따라잡을 만큼 충분한 에너지가 남아있지 않을 것입니다.
      44
      00:03:01,963 --> 00:03:06,971
      If you are a freestyler, do you even swim the individual medley? I don’t think so.
      자유형 선수라면, 당신은 개인혼영으로 헤엄치기는 하나요? 안 그럴 것 같습니다.
      45
      00:03:07,119 --> 00:03:08,438
      I’m kidding.
      농담입니다.
      46
      00:03:08,509 --> 00:03:11,692
      You are probably used to going out fast on the butterfly.
      당신은 아마도 접영에서 빠르게 나가는 데 익숙할 것입니다.
      47
      00:03:11,737 --> 00:03:21,243
      But I suggest going easy on the butterfly and try to stay with everyone on the backstroke and breaststroke to get a chance to beat everyone on the freestyle.
      그렇지만 저는 접영에서는 쉽게 가고 배영과 평영에서는 다른 선수들에게 뒤처지지 않으려고 노력하다가 자유형 구간에서 다른 선수들을 물리칠 기회를 노리라고 제안합니다.
      48
      00:03:21,409 --> 00:03:24,839
      Remember, do not slow down on the transitions.
      기억하십시오, 영법 전환에서 느려지지 마십시오.
      49
      00:03:24,909 --> 00:03:30,119
      Get to the wall quickly and use the momentum to get some advantage on your competitors.
      벽에 재빠르게 다가가 그 타력(momentum, 모멘텀)을 이용해서 경쟁자들보다 유리해지십시오.
      50
      00:03:30,144 --> 00:03:32,762
      You can rest on the wall when you are done.
      쉬는 것은 경기를 마치고 마지막 벽에서 할 수 있습니다.

    Well it's a question that doesn't really have to do with the video but I really hope you see it. I started swimming in July, 2017 until February, 2018. I had to stop because of my exams and I wasn't the best at managing my time. I really wanna go back but I lack motivation and I feel numb. Plus my animeia makes it seems harder for me. I go on my own to practice and I'm literally the only one pushing myself so I don't know if I'm able to do that anymore because I'm not as motivated as I was when I first started. Any idea how to push myself to get back? I'd really appreciate it.

      it is just swimming, remember that. Try to spend couple of weeks just enjoying the feeling of water and recover skills without forcing yourself. Than make a plan with achievable targets (like 'I want to get close to my best results in 2 months').

    • @hugoapresname
      @hugoapresname 7 місяців тому

      I am no expert and just guessing but not only made meters are important but the momentary speed.
      So if you have a very good streamline which I don’t have you can conserve more *speed* .
      If you loose a lot of speed then you have to invest more energy to get up to speed again. I am an amateur but this was miracle knowledge for me😅

      I also have 2 best strokes, fly and breast, I usually try to go out fast in my fly like maybe 90% sprint, then I take it kinda easy in the backstroke and let my arms do the work, so that when I reach breast my legs got some energy again so that i can get some good kicks in the breast and then I just use what energy I have left in freestyle.
      Maybe you could do the same but where you switch the strokes of course

    I'm not sure any of this really helps with pacing an IM unless you have pace to spare. Certainly in sprint IM, I just go for it from the start. In a 400m IM, I just try not to overdo the effort on the fly then do whatever I can afterwards.

    The swimming pool design is completely wrong the structure is wrong it should not be a rectangular box because the distribution of water molecules is not uniform when many swimmers put there energy and force into the water there by creating a turbulent in the rectangular swimming pool so many forces comes into play specially who are at the side of the walls are hit by the reaction force bounce from the walls there by they're drag into horizontal direction instead of moving ahead, those who are at the middle row are the luckiest because there's no force acting on them as they are far away from the walls where there's is practically no reaction force bounce back of water acting on them,if you observe every Olympics game I find no body win when they are on the side only the middle row swimmers win hence no justification so far, there for it is my suggestion that inorder to simplify the design pool it will be very nice if we can separate each lane with a transparent glass so that each swimmers swim in their own water body if any one reads my comments and take it to an appropriate body to ponder I hope one day sports lover will enjoy watching with full satisfaction 😂
