This was a joy to watch! Gwynn's commentary shows she's a woman that's experienced and comfortable in the overlapping world, and it refreshing to hear. I hope that some day my wife and I are as strong a team off-road as you two are. Also, Andrew, your glee driving the 'mog was infectious. Great video!

Gosh! Brought back so many memories of my own days, many years ago, when learning to drive big trucks, before they had synchromesh gearboxes. Rev matching, double clutching, clutchless shifting, and that is a dying art. Not something today's youth would grasp.

Well this raucous variant is sightly stereotyping adverse Unimog opinions, Andrew. Non-masochists will go for a much more comfortable next generation square cab 435 or 437 model with civilized retrofitted soundproofing, an acceptable seating position, the engine moved down and forward out of the cab space, adequate power up to 240 bhp, fully effective synchromesh and a pneumatically assisted clutch pedal. That`s before we get to acres of cab space in the Dokka variant, optional OEM CTIS and with a decent corridor arrangement, the less agile can access via stairs into the back box. A good chance also of hydraulics for the winch, making dragging others out of sticky situations more linear. And always laughably huge reserves of compressed air for tyre inflation and sounding the inevitably retrofitted locomotive air horns. No adult child should be without a Unimog!😅

It's good to see you really enjoying yourself and laughing in a vehicle , I think you have only broken into boyish joy ( that showed) on two other occasions , 1 . The white range rover on Pendine sands and , 2. The little suzuki jimny in new Zealand, and now this Mog , its good to see the happy Andrew instead of serious , bbc documentary Andrew . Great video keep em coming .

The gears on that Unimog remind me of the Massey Ferguson 65 on my late father’s farm in the sixties. Three gears - double range then multi power so 12 gears. Loved that tractor.😊Andrew you seem to like the 4 ft long gear throws. What’s better than a Mog - an FJ Cruiser of course.

Funny, this brings me back to my time in the swiss army - way back in the 80ties. The ratteling, the sound, the cramped space up front etc. Actually, we soldiers prefered the Mog over a Pinzgauer because of the space in the back. But our driver hated it. As an exemlpe, they had to remove the side window for saftey reasons (visibility), when you would need it. In the snow, or in the cold rain ...

Reminds me at my years at the volunteer fire brigade. There I drove 20 to 25 years back the 404S witch had a 6 zyl. Petrol engine. It was just fun for us. Later it got replaced to the new model and of course they are much much more power and luxury. And don’t forget it was innovated for farming. The off-road capabilities are amazing till now!! I wonder what my little mog would think of Australia? I think he'd be excited!
It's an U411 Westfalia (the big "luxury' cabin), built in 1964.
My grandpa owned it until he passed away.
It's really tough - despite being so old and having just 32 horse powers, it can tow up to 10 tons.
And reaches 53km/h under optimum conditions.

I owned a U416 took out the old engine, replaced it with a Atlantis diesel high output 6.9 litre six cylinder unit. (These were built under license of the Mercedes and MAN power plants). Furthermore I had a variety of settings on the difflock of front and back. However I also encapsulated the engine bay, engine cover, with heavy duty sound and heat proofing. My Unimog in two wheel drive could reach 120 kmph but it was always safer and more economical at around 80 to 90 kmph. Andrew a correction...when engaging reverse you only have low range, in two wheel drive or 4 wheel drive. One can of course select diff lock either front only, rear only, or use both front and back. In my version I could select difflock in front or rear or both irrespective if it was in 4 wheel drive or two wheel drive. Calculated that was about 32 different gear and difflock options. My son named our Unimog "Big Joe" I sold the Mog to a farmer who today still owns it.

Andrew. The 416 double cab with a fast axle gear ratio has 6 forward gears/ reverse / high range low range/ rear axle only/4WD/4WD with diff/ and PTO to drive winch
You have to sound insulate the cabin and then you have the perfect overland vehicle. You can reach speeds of 100k/h but again with those big tyres it does get bumpy. So stick to 95km/h

That is the Nr. 1 when it comes to serious offroad capability. When you get stuck with a Range Rover, Land Rover or Toyota, you call a Unimog to pull you out. But this perticular model seems to be a U 416, due to this quite long wheelbase. The U 406 has 2,38m and the U 416 has 2,90m. And from the sound, either the engine or the exhaust is not standard. But this time you obviously found out, that this old "beast" is really a man's car. It's like riding an elephant. You know that it will be shaky and bumpy and uncomfortable, but you know, this piece of technology will bring you to any place you want, regardless what's in your path. We have been out with my friends U 406 sometimes and I was seriously impressed, what this vehicle is capable of. Enjoy your time together with your wife and test some more vehicles. Good luck.

Years ago I had two Moog's for work .. an 8 speed and a 21 speed. Always thought I wanted one for off roading but now years later I realize that they are just too much to take care of. Mercedes Benz let me up the rpm on my units so i could do 65 mph on the roads. Had a D6 Cat on call to get us unstuck which we did quite often .. farms fields were our demise .. the wheels would sink into the soft ground or mud .. and once there you needed the Cat to pull you out. Had Braden hydralic winches on order but the job ended and the Moog's went back to Cat .. interestingly when doing 65 mph down the highway I got 14 mpg .. was kind of comical. Highway Patrol pulled us over all the time because we had no plates on the Moogs .. they were imported as 'Tractors' and didn't need them. 🤠

I am in the process of repairing a 1973 406. The electrical harness was eaten by ground squirrels and there is not charging taking place while the vehicle is running. I removed the air filter housing in the engine bay and found “the problem”! The little varmints ate the wiring to what I think is the charging regulator mounted behind the air filter housing. My problem is that the male plug is nowhere to be found and I cannot find it anywhere. Do you or anyone you know have a wiring schematic (color code) in order to rewire it correctly? I cannot find any information on the internet for some crazy reason! Makes no sense and I would like to be able to use the 406 for snow removal. If I run with lights and wipers - battery will be dead before I am done. Thank you for any assistance! Love your Unimog Camper! Fantastic!!

It is not a 406 but a 416. The main difference is the longer wheelbase of the 416 and the faster axles. So you can do 100km/h. a 406 is short and slower and for farmers.
416 is a good choice for a overland camper also the 404 1300L 1700L all are nice for it because they can go on the highway too.
You should try to drive a 1300L camper. Way different experience.
I have a 1965 Unimog 404 myself. With a diesel swap powersteering and a nice camper shelter. And full victron 12volt system with induction cooking :D

drove the 406 from the austrian military, and while i can totally understand your enthusiasm for it, i'm so happy i will never have to set a single foot into one again driving longer distances. you nailed it with "ridiculously good but terrible at the same time". the later models are simply not comparable to the 40x series, the 406 really is a tractor build for the farm and in my opinion one of the worst ideas for a traveling vehicle, but somehow my inner child would love to own one, especially the short wheelbase, as nonsensical as it is.

A Unimog camper is a bit of a paradox.
It's incredibly capable but it's not the sort of vehicle you'd use for a short trip but if you're on a long trip you're probably not going to risk taking it on the sort of terrain you actually need a Unimog to traverse.
Also, that Unimog is missing it's step-rings from the front wheels, unfortunately - possibly because they're not road-legal in Dubai?

Those rings are for the 404 types like mine. the 416 has the step behind the mud guard. You just need to find youw own way to step in. Like which feet first where to step. If you figured that out it is easy :D

      @@unimog404 Interesting.
I've driven a Unimog which looked similar to the one ASPW was driving, here, but I couldn't say exactly what model it was.
The one I drove DID have step-rings (and a couple of decent grab-handles), which made getting in and out far easier because it presented you with an obvious path up into the cab.
Always bugs me when I climb out of a truck and then have to do that awkward shuffle where you shift your weight from one foot to the other so you can use the same foot to make the next step up or down.
