  • Greg "The Hammer" Valentine discusses how much money he makes on his WWF wrestling figures (LJN, Hasbro, Mattel). Streaming now 📺 TitleMatchNetwork.com
No one tells it like it is better than the Hammer! Valentine has had many different wrestling figures produced by WWF (now known as WWE) over the years.
Back in July 1984, Vince McMahon (owner of WWF) and LJN signed a licensing agreement for the production.
Greg Valentine would be featured heavily in Series 2 which hit shelves in 1985. He was also released as part of the Dream Team tag set with Brutus the Barber Beefcake. The LJN wrestling figures sold huge in the 1980s.
In 1991, Valentine was supposed to be part of the Hasbro Series 2 collection with Honky Tonk Man. However, Rhythm and Blues broke up so the figure was scrapped. Hammer would go back to the blond hair by Series 3.
Find out how much Valentine and other WWF wrestlers were making off their merchandise. Hear how often superstars get paid royalties from their image and likeness.
Also, get Greg's opinion on his new WWE figure recently released by Mattel.

Greg the Hammer, while certainly not warm and fuzzy, is a straight shooter. The way he recounts stories sounds realistic and not an attempt to make himself look better, or make himself out to be a victim. I appreciate that he lets you know how Vince set up a lot of the wrestlers with a retirement income stream.
In his interviews, Don Muraco also comes across as humble and recounts his stories without making himself out to be a martyr or hero. By contrast, Honky Tonk Man certainly has an axe to grind and rips people left and right during interviews.

I’m so glad to hear that these guys were looked after. I usually only hear the horror stories. The original Greg the Hammer Valentine wrestling figure was the first one I ever wanted, and got. ( After I laid on the floor at K-Mart and cried till I got it! uuugghh) Fast forwarding 30 years, and well before UA-cam’s resurgence of the best generation of wrestlers ever, I walk into The Nashua House of Pizza in Nashua NH and there he was sitting with some other wrestlers from that era at a birthday party. I was in total shock and disbelief but I managed to give him a thumbs up and he nodded back at me. I often wish that I went over and said a simple thank you for making my childhood a good one but I’m more proud that I let him eat in peace with his friends. I highly doubt he’ll ever read this but just incase ….. Thank You Mr, Valentine. I appreciate all the bumps, bruises, and blood you gave to entertain us. And I hope life is and continues to be well for you ! ☮️ & ❤️

    • @duogemstone

I could be wrong but pretty sure he had to, toys are a bit wonky when it comes to likeness rights you can have the license for the property to make toys but you still need likeness rights if based of a real person, hince why alot of movie toys in the 80s and 90s looked nothing like the actors. Not to mention paying royalties has always been Vince's way of paying peanuts anyway heard many stories of wrestlers getting paid next to nothing for a matches and how most of their money came from merch sales.
This isn't to say Vince and family are terrible people or anything but they definitely aren't as nice as they like people to believe either

Scott Hall recently revealed that he is making 6 figures just from WWE royalties due to nWo merchandise. These legend contracts generally aren’t very big but these legends are still making good money from occasional appearances, royalties from video games, action figures, t-shirts, etc. And the WWE is making very good money from nostalgia. The smarks hates the WWE for investing into the past but that is only because the past sells and it helps legends like Greg Valentine during retirement.

He seems to be content with life right now, glad to hear some positivity from a genuine wrestler about the industry. I’m also glad Vince is using some other way to compensate these guys on retirement. Royalties are probably worth ten times more than pensions.

I started watched pro wrestling in the early 80s. Back when it was the WWWF. Because I lived in New York State, I would get all the Madison Square Garden matches with Hulk, Jesse, etc. At that time, Greg would have a match about every time I would watch. He was my favorite. One of the things he did that I loved is he would have his opponent pinned, and then lift him up right before the three count. I thought that was so damn cocky that I loved it! Of course, being a heel, he would wind up losing those matches a good bit, but that made it all the more cool that he would do that.
