Adam Swanson gives this piano a workout! This all took place at the Annual Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival of 2008 on June 6th.
I hope you can make it to the festival in 2009!

Adam Swanson! You have just received your highest compliment from another Master Pianist Allen Dale.
Yeah, it's always amazed me how he seems easily distracted while playing the piano, but his hands keep going to all the right places. He's done that since I first saw him play, at age 12. I'm glad he takes Hunter's hit at the right tempo. So many people play it like it's called Tickled to Sleep. This is a real high-energy rag like most of the late-19th-century ragtime (cf. Maple Leaf Rag when played at a proper tempo). Slow, "Classic Rags" were another decade or so away...
Nice Performance here by Adam. By the way this song is really a lot easier to play than it sounds. Here, he just puts his Adamisms in this to make it sound hard.
Great camera angle, and fantastic meter by Adam...how can he look around like that while playing!! Alot can be learned by watching the masters of ragtime, and I of course, totally LOVE that part of attending a ragtime festival. 5*
Wow!!
Th piano is right by the main entrance door of the Ragtime Store during the very busy Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival, and many people are coming and going as they have schedules to keep and other venues to attend with other wonderful piano players on stage.
Too often there are "ignorant, ill mannered, low life culture less ignorant people" who make knee jerk comments like yours without knowing the full story.
Thanks for watching and for your informative comment.

Yes, Young Adam is right up there with them fellas!
His destiny as a piano playing great shall be noted as time marched by.

I am so glad that you posted to my site. You have made my day. I noticed that Allendale1962 made a comment about how well you do. Ck out his site.
Thank you for the music. From Earl in Huntington Beach,Ca.
Ida,
Yes, I was tickled to get that spot next to the manequin to shoot this little series of videos of Adam. You are right. It's amazing how he can look around and not miss a lick. The young whippersnapper is a piano wizard for sure!
Thanks for your nice comments!

@Sapphire848
Adam is now 18 years old.
I think the title is actually the title of a previously written song - I found it on Wikipedia just now - - -Charles Hunter (ragtime composer) ... Absorbing the folk strains of Nashville, he published his first rag, "Tickled to Death," in 1899, which became a hit.
I think Adam might have perfect pitch, which explains why he is so comfortable at the keyboard, + is so accurate. That plus he probably practices like I used to do (I ought to practice more!!!)
@tdub1941 Nice to hear. I'm no expert but I think he plays with such ease. Spitznagel is another guy I really like too. But check out Sportiello and Mazetier they are good too.
Howdy Wil,
He had me fooled with all of those fancy "Adamisms." I'm barely smart enough to play the washboard, let alone a piano!

Leggo my ego... ;)
It may be easy it may be hard but the performance counts and this is a goody.
Absolutely....Brilliant!
Did Adam reveal the name of the tune at the end or did he make that up on the spot and name it after? I know the former sounds more likely, but the latter is possible.
Also, how old is he?
I'd love my clarinet playing or singing to be as good as that.
tdub. You watch around all these festivals I assume. Do you consider Swanson to be one the biggest talents today. He sure is young and already plays like pro. Could he be like a young Wellstood or Hyman. Or are they well ahead of him.
@KawhackitaRag Yea I notice he is accurate too. It's never sloppy even though he shows great speed.
Hey Tom, My name is accually spelled with 2 L's. Thanks, Will.
This Kid Adam is really fantastic. As for the ignorant, ill mannered, low life culture less ignorant people going out the door while he is performing, If I was there I would be tempted to smack them over the side of the Head!!!
Thanks for watching!
RagJazzMonkey Tom
Will, Ok, and to make up for all of those previously missing L's -
Willllllllllllllllllllllllllll.
That ought to be about right he he!

Oh, and just like it's nothing he pulls off a little riff at 1:36...a tickling of the ivories...why not just TICKLE US S'MORE??
Without an ego life wouldn't be worth living!
Here are some more L's Will.
llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
Now if I goof up in the future and spell it with only 1 l then I have some banked here in this comment. hehe!

I guess it pays to have an ego... ???
