I am his dad Nicholas Gellie. Tom started out on my back in a child back pack in 1984 when Mary, his mother, and I skied the main range off the slopes of Mount Carruthers and places near Perisher. I can remember as I telemarked downhill Tim would look over my shoulder as I carved a turn. He was only one-year old. I am pretty sure he got the thrill of skiing from those very moments. It is absolutely awesome he has got to the pinnacle of skiing and ski instructing. Great video Tom and thanks for sharing your insights and enthusiasm for top-level skiing.
@@nicholasgellie6509 skiing well is one thing but able to coach consistently and find the right words and methods , much more difficult and different skills . Your must be proud about your son ☺️
@@Steph-iw3hr well he must have learnt a bit from me as his dad. I watched his video several times the other day. Indeed I am taken back with both with his standard of coaching and skiing. It is a whole other level. He shares his insights with me from time to time. The only thing I would do differently to Tom is that I would downhill telemark on cross-country skis on those slopes as I have done out in the back country of the Snowy Mountains and the High Plains in Victoria. Tom skied with me in a toddler pack on my back when he was 13 months old high up on the Snowy Mountains range. I wish that I had a picture of him in his little blue suit, wool mitts and gloves, ski goggles, and orange woollen beany and cute waterproof booties. I remember doing telemark turns on the lower slopes of Mt Northcote with Tom peering over one of my shoulders. He should one day incorporate that story into his videos. I think I even took him and my other son Andy to Mt Townsend and above Blue Lake one day if my memory serves me correctly. It was close to there anyway. The one thing I can say that he hasn't done is to ski from Kiandra to Perisher in the Snowy Mountains with a back pack in four days with Michael my friend from Canberra back in 2000.
It does make you feel good! You won't believe but I'm from Zambia and black😂😂 and I'm in Trysil - Norway right now. Came to ski. Snow hunting is my hobby and skiing on the slopes it's just the love I have come to know! I love it
What a beautiful video Tom ❤️ At the ripe age of 56yrs I can not remember when this mind set started that I have always skied in starting out as a 5 year old. It has shaped the skier I am now expressing and I am also happier then I have ever been with my sking ability that continues to expand and improve. I now have the biggest smile on my dial and feel exactly what it is that this sking brings to me in emotions. Thanks again 🙏🏽💫🚀🚀🚀xx
This made me emotional. Thank you for sharing, Tom. I'm from Puerto Rico and never knew anything about skiing, much less actually doing the thing! Now I live in NW Montana and ski almost every day and it's my favorite thing to do in the whole world! I finished my Avi1 course yesterday. I love skiing with my nerdy ski friends and I'm excited and grateful to plan fun and safe backcountry tours with them 💜. This is the same mentality I have about skiing - just grateful to be out there having fun :).
This is absolutely wonderful, Tom! As a woman in her 50s, returning to the mountain after 30 years and rediscovering a passion from my youth has been nothing short of transformative. Your videos and podcasts have been an incredible source of guidance and motivation, helping me improve my skills and cultivate a mindset that truly matters.
when i saw the part about cross country skiing while wanting to downhill, reminded me of myself ... i think what makes a great skier is having all the tools which develops the mindset ... by tools i mean things you do that relate to downhill skiing. For me, it was having to walk up the runs (yes, they allowed it) for the first 2 years i skied (too small to use the ropetow), 1962-4 when i was 5-7, this developed my independence of my feet, i still think of skis as just big feet to this day. Another tool was cross country skiing which i did a lot of when i was young 8-17, that developed my balance (try skinny skis on a jump or just on a steep hill) and ability to move, again, my feet independently of each other ... another tool (unfortunately people don't have this opportunity anymore) was getting involved in ski jumping when i was 11-21 ... that taught me about speed and not to be afraid of it, also taught me about leaning forward and not to be afraid of it, we didn't have money for jumping skis or boots going off the 35m and 65 m jumps, so we would just unlace (at the start) then later when buckles came in unbuckle the top two so we could lean into the skis til our noses were almost touching them so we could get that aerodynamic position like jumping requires. Then hot dogging in the early 70s, taught me to be aggressive as did ski racing, 11 -14, back in the day. No snow groomers least where i came from, so we raced in moguls, taught me everything about moguls, among many other things .... another tool was skating (hockey in Canada), rinks, ponds, rivers ... again, independence of each foot. There's so many variables to skiing, agression, confidence, ability, awareness, the ability to say, "nah, maybe i will wait another day to try that" and then succeeding when felt confident to do it cause you "thought" about it and analyse it. I think if people really want to improve their skiing, and this is the golden age to do it via "video" on youtube, (oh, if i had had youtube when i was younger), the secret is to analyse each run as you go up the chairlift ... and watch these videos by these pros like Tom who spend their time and effort to make them. I'm not gonna name any names in deference to this channel, but i'm sure Tom knows who i'm talking about. I thank all you gentlemen and ladies i follow, from the bottom of my heart, for doing it ... I've learned everything i know about carving from these videos and my analysing of my runs on the chairlift ... am i doing it right, then i'd watch video ... slo mo, or stop ... and just analyse positioning of hands, feet, legs, shoulders, head, wrists and on and on, every body part, watch the "timing", the patience required for carving ... and then i practice, always on the baby hill til i have it perfect, cuz i know if i can't do it on the baby hill without thinking about it i'll never do it on blues and blacks, cuz i don't have time to think about it due to the terrain and speed. It's all important, so take whatever skills you already have and apply them to skiing if you can ... and analyse analyse analyse ... yourself and good skiers you watch as you go up the chairlifts and then watch video of the "pros" to make sure doing it right ... and experiment, try different ways, try different techniques, be adaptable, cuz if i know anything it's that skiing is a very young sport and the technological change from when i started - lace up leather boots, beartrap bindings, bamboo poles, wood skis, screwon every inch of the ski edges- is mindblowing and the technology and technique is only gonna continue expanding ... i know this, lol, cuz every year i've skied it's always "ok, this year is the way to ski", from christie to stem christie to parallel to pivot to jump to movement and motion to carving to ... but never forget, all the past techniques are still valid, can't carve everywhere .... i wish i was young, lol. it's only gonna get better. cuz high speed dynamic skiing is all about .... ability ... and your confidence in that ability ... ya know, mindset.
After years of feeling I'm just not getting anywhere with improvement, I decided to actively focus on the joy....the fun....the people I'm with..the journey. Skiing is a lifestyle. (I have the new CARV but have not used it yet, but will be shortly. Even with its use, I'm reminding myself its just a tool. The joy, the fun...that feeling. That's what I'm cultivating this year)
