Yewww Jens! So stoked we got to film this collab together with the help of Carv. The coolest thing was getting to meet you and hang out for the week. Jens is just a great guy and now a friend. Cool to connect on many levels from love of sports, staying fit, being a Dad, and building a job around social media. Honored to be the guy that was invited to coach you Jens. Can’t wait to hang out again.
Tom and Jens, you two are the best. Beside being the elite athletes, Tom, you the best teacher. You can convey the idea so clearly with easy language. Jens, I admire you to show your own weakness, and teach us how to learn. Thank you all.
This must be one of the greatest videos of all time explaining what it takes to carve. Also it shows that even a fantastic skier like Jens still has a lot to learn and work on. Keep it up guys. Great work!
I can carve on my third season! I watched all the Tom ski analyses and practiced almost all of his video drills! Believe it or not, Tom @Bigpictureskiing is the king! Thank you, Jens, for having him! Great video put together!
This tutorial was so fun to watch and listen to! I was able to replicate these movements within 4 runs today! I couldn’t believe it! You and Tom have such a great understanding of biomechanics, and how to explain it in a comprehensible way! Such amazing synergy! I could not thank you guys enough for making this video!
I feel this video shows the importance of a good coach. The way Tom created a progressive programme that set the groundwork and then built on it as well as the ability to spot small errors in body positioning allowed for such great improvements. His focus on learning the feelings involved allows you to continue progressing even when not working with him. Nice one
Woooww, woooww, woooww ! This is the video tutorial we all were looking for. I'm a dead to love for carving and been trying to do that for my last 2 ski seasons. I'll be replicating this drills from Tom G. who I also follow and I cannot thank you any bigger than a big thanks again, and as always, following you!!! 👏👏👏🎉🎉🎉
Oh boy, the collab we've all been waiting for ⛷ Also this video shows a lot better how much base skill set is needed for this beautiful show off carv. Tom's videos made me believe I could do this. But when I tried I was blown away by the difficulty. This video shows the complexity in a much deeper detail. I'll give it sooo many gos for sure. Can't wait to get back on the piste now :D
Thank you! Yea this sure is difficult and Im glad I struggled with balance, pressure control, lowering the god damn outside arm and much more on the video. I will clean it up this winter.
I’ve been following both you and Tom for some time now, and you’ve both individually brought my skiing on so much! But as others have said, this is the collab to beat all collabs! Can’t wait to try it out sometime soon. And hopefully more from the two of you together in the near future!
That tip about the inside knee angle was a good one to hear - it made sense to prevent sliding the inner leg from under you while arcing. Wow, this was non-stop full of great tips!
It is one of the keys to getting that "hip to snow" feeling. But as you saw in my data its not neccesary and its a bad thing at lower edge angles wheres its not needed.
Awesome, awesome. I can feel the joy across the screen. The joy of skiing, the joy of learning and the joy of teaching. Can’t wait to go back next week. I can do had drag already. Hope my ass won’t disappoint me.
I think this video will really help. I believe I am pretty similar to Jens old Level. Really parallel with similar age angles, and i think its good way to get to a stable Position while carving. But realizing that when you really want to go deeper you need to forget that idea of similar age angles and think about inside knee high, letting your skis go outwards initiating the turn while staying forward was an eyeopener. Will try that forsure the next time im on snow!
Such a great video, certainly the best on this topic. I find videos where someone is actually being taught something, and you can see the challenges of learning it, so much more effective than just straight to camera instruction and demo.
Great, great break down and demos !! Jens just has to lock up the feeling and sensation in his head and it will become second nature . . . wow ! Fitness is key. Not all skiers are fit enough to accomplish and master these moves. Thanks for sharing . . . . great stuff !!!
Nice vid to see Tom, incredible coach , with jans Breakdown drills are so important to go step by step Btw , jans has the good smile as he’s so proud of his improvement
Yea he is great! Thanks for the compliment and I was real proud until I saw the video and new I still got a fair amount of polishing to do. Which I look forward too. :)
Hey Jens, this was a great way to see the technique breakdown into bits that I can use one at a time and then put together into a whole turn. I did a group camp w Tom and Dezmelda last year here at Sun Peaks Canada and while it was wonderful, it was drinking from a firehouse. It’s nice to have access to these fundamental pieces to focus on as homework. Thank you and Tom for putting this together.
I'm always very impressed by your videos and this one is perhaps the best yet. The clarity of progression that Tom presented and the dialogue the two of you had (along with how the editing highlights this) were simply outstanding. What a magnificent dissection of the nuances of skiing!
I find it helpful to allow your feet and legs to pass underneath your body when finishing one turn and starting the next. It requires a bit of patience but it creates a good stable platform and helps to avoid moving the upper body inside too quickly. Cool to see your progress and I think you are well on your way to your goal.
Amazing transformation Jens! Perfect video showing us that it is really possible to gain higher edge angles with small adjustments. It really helps having an ace coach like Tom Gellie though :D
Awesome video. I have been watching both yours and Tom's videos for over a year to try and get better myself. Seeing this collaboration and your immediate growth was awesome!
Great video, the latest content is 🔥. I'm not super focused on carving in my skiing, but lately I've been thinking why not improve it. This is exactly the video that I needed. I didn't even know hip dragging was the backflip of carving. Going to start working on this every ski day.
Wow. The difference was phenomenal! As they said at the end, it can take a long time for great skiers to get even better, and you nailed it in three days! I’m definitely going to be trying out Tom’s drills this season, hopefully they’ll do the same for me!
Good inspiration! :) One question - why regular CARV users don't get the graphics shown on the screen? If data is obviously available - why don't present it in the app? Or am I missing it? I think it will be best to show how to use CARV metrics available to "mere mortals"for improvement and assessment, not something that is available only to CARV employees. As a new CARV user I think making data available in the web browser is very important, as well as providing to all users the graphic representations we just saw on screen.
We're working on bringing these charts into the app in the future! At the moment they require a bit of manual work in the backend to create - we'll keep you updated.
@@CarvSki I do appreciate you taking the time to respond! 👍 Such charts will be really useful in the higher skill levels as improvement there is achieved with very subtle adjustments and comparing the graph of your edging to the best gives you insight into such details. I keep my fingers crossed that similar graphs are implemented in the future releases of CARV.
Yes, definitely would be very helpful. For example to show to young ski racers (like U10, U12). It is hard to explain to them metrics, I think charts would help.
Great video! I am in a similar (before) situation and Carv doesn't really help from here. Thanks for the expert coaching and showing the struggles of reaching the last percents. Can't wait to go and practice the drills. Congratulations on the progress!

Seeing Jens improve so fast with expert coaching by Tom is super inspirational. I've always wondered ... how fast to you need to go for all the forces to balance (and prevent a fall) at the highest angles? (I'm guessing it's also a question of the skier's weight).
@ Hi Jen’s, are you on the Rs version of X9 and what length do you use (if you don’t mind saying your height & weight also). I’m on a FIS Sl S9 Atomic and was thinking a longer radius may be interesting. Thks

What kind of ski with which turning radius should I go for if my goal is carving with the highest edge angle like that ? (I have atomic maverick 95TI) Also should I go longer or shorter for the ski ?
I ski Elan Ripstick 88 / 182; is it even possible to carve like this with such skis? Three days private lessons with Tom Gellie - sweet. I took Tom's online course in winter 23/24 and it really helped me. Jens, I intend to sign up for one of your camps in the not-too-distant future. I want to learn to jump properly and to do helicopters.
Wondering what kind of skis you guys are rolling with. I'm in Alaska so I'm rolling on Chetlers that are 110 underfoot, wanting to try a super-g or gs ski style with a bigger sidecut to improve my carving.
So if I am understanding this correctly... from a lower stance at the top of the turn you let the skis move away from your body which allows your COM to drop inwards rather than topple the body inwards to move your COM away from the skis to get higher edge angles.
Thanks. Seems to be a dedicated piste ski with 65mm under foot. Mine Head Core is 94mm. Guess they would be a little more of a challenge 😅 Maybee a little gear heads up could be nice.
How do you do a hand or hip drag while maintaining more pressure on the outside ski vs the inside ski? It seems like you are putting too much weight on the inside ski and that one is the one that is carving while the outside ski slides more than carves?
I think I don’t have the flexibility in the hips to do it. I m 176cm, what skis and length would you recommend for carving like that with the hip to the ground?
Many times i am putting all weight on the inside, it catches, so the outside ski goes wide, what am i doing wrong? Too much weight to the back a the apex?
These drills are really calling for an injury - I would advise to be very careful not to accidentally unload the bottom ski when touching the snow, inadvertingly shifting weight onto the hand/hip

How is on muscles? Do quadricep of inside leg work more?
What type of skies do you use starting to carve like this ? :)
I was on Atomic X9S 15.4m radius.
Hi there
What is the flex of the boots ?
What about grip walk and non grip walk ?
I got gripwalk and I dont think it matters what sole you got. I had 130 flex.
How do you do a hand or hip drag while maintaining more pressure on the outside ski vs the inside ski? It seems like you are putting too much weight on the inside ski and that one is the one that is carving while the outside ski slides more than carves?
By angulating = keep the upper body more upright than the legs.
On which slopes should we do all the practices? Blue, Red or even black slope?
Red.
I have Carv, but I can't figure out how to see the Carv chart highlighted in this video. Is it a feature available to all Carv users?
Carv answered another comment with their plans. You cant see the graphs yet as it takes manual work. But they may make it available.
What type of skiis sre you using? Slalom? Gs?
The kind in between the you mentioned. X9S
I think I don’t have the flexibility in the hips to do it. I m 176cm, what skis and length would you recommend for carving like that with the hip to the ground?
Around 15-16m radius. Length not so important. Im your length and in this video i skied 177cm X9S
@ thanks for the fast answer!
Thanks for pointing that out. If your not ready for this which applies to most skiers it can be sketchy.
Like all of us he’s better on one side than the other
Indeed
were you skiing on narrower skis to reach high angle?
Yes. X9S
Oh! Stiff 65mm. Now it all makes sense.
