America is the only country in the world doing this properly, whether you accept it or not. I'm european and live in the EU, theres 10 european countries that have a higher rate per capita of mass shootings than the US. Look it up "mass shooting rate per capita by country". And thats just compared to the US average. If we break it down to US states you'll see that about half of US states had only 1 or no mass shootings in their entire history. Also, any country that doesn't have the right to own the tools used to ensure self preservation, has no respect for freedom and has no citizens - it has subjects. The US is the only country in the world that actually respects freedom. Europe is a strange place indeed.

@@DesertStateInEUAccording to World Population Review, The highest mass shooting per capita between 2009 and 2015 was in Norway, but; "Norway's world-leading annual rate was due to a single devastating 2011 event, in which far-right extremist Anders Behring Breivik gunned down 69 people at a summer camp on the island of Utøya. Norway had zero mass shootings in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015." If you think the US is safer than Norway, you probably need to think through your argument.

As it happens you being european while supporting gun ownership yet wanting the government to have anything to do with it, is the reason europe will never be free.

I'm glad parents are finally being held accountable.
Failure to safely store firearms so that a child or vulnerable adult can't get them is irresponsible ownership. I have young nieces and nephews, keeping them away from my firearms is very important to me - despite the fact that they've never visited my home, my firearms are locked in a safe, the ammunition is in a lockbox in the safe (the ammunition lockbox has a separate key that isn't kept in the safe), and the firearms are also locked with individual trigger locks.
We're responsible as adults for keeping kids away from danger - whether it's chemicals being locked up out of reach, power tools being stored properly, or firearms being secured, we have a duty of care. Parents who allow their children to access firearms unsupervised are being grossly negligent and should be charged. If the child isn't receiving help for mental health concerns, that's also negligent (this care should also be free if the parents can't afford it). Not keeping weapons away from children with mental health concerns is possibly one of the most negligent things one can do as a parent/guardian/adult. So if the child goes on to commit an act of violence with that weapon, the adult should absolutely be charged with the same crimes as the child and also charged for their role in how the weapon got into the child's possession.
This needs to continue to happen to every single adult who negligently allows a child in their lives to access a weapon (with or without their knowledge, but especially if the weapon was obtained for the child). Charge them with the same crime, with accessory, and/or negligence.

I was Born in 1958. My Father bought me my first rifle when I was 12 years old, and bought me a smaller .22 caliber rifle when I was 14 years old. I use both firearms to this day in hunting activities, and in target shooting activities. Never in my school years did I have thoughts of taking my firearms to school to be used to hurt anyone, and never did I ever lose the respect of how dangerous a firearm can be. So what's the difference here? I was 12 years old when my Father gifted me with my first firearm so that I could participate in the upcoming deer hunting season in Pennsylvania, back in 1970. My Father didn't commit any crime by buying me my first firearm, nor did I feel empowered to go and shoot up a school. So what has changed? Not the firearms, not the age range of the people involved; could it be something psychological? What are we doing wrong as parents? What is society doing wrong with our children? Maybe we need to start there to find the answers. Maybe we need to rethink what we feed our children through the content that is available on TV, and the content that is available through Video Games. Those are just two things that have changed in our society since I was a child. Where else do we need to look? How about the family structure? How about drug and alcohol abuse? How about the way we look at life in general? We've mixed all these ingredients together, and baked the cake that we now have in our societal structure. Maybe it's time to change a few of the ingredients? Maybe it's time to face our mistakes? Maybe it's just too late to do anything at this point?

As a former school administrator I have dealt with many students like the one in Georgia before. It is common for some boys in particular to get obsessed with weapons. I would meet with the parents to coordinate and discuss the situation and see what the school could do to help. Like the law enforcement people in Georgia I would help work out a safety plan with the parent at home to ensure the student had no access to weapons. Sometimes this included working through PARENT DENIAL of a real problem with their child. If there were other issues I would try to refer parents to outside resources for help with mental health, housing, food, etc.. I required these types of students to meet counseling staff who were assigned to greet students at the entrance of the school each morning, go to a private office where I would search them and their backpack for weapons. This was also a consistent time to check in with them about life in general - make sure they are doing ok if things at home are rocky and make sure they are not targeted by bullying at school. If they were being bullied I would immediately hold the bullies responsible and call their parents to enlist their support as a team to correct them. These "high at-risk" students are in all our schools. In a school of 1000 students I might have as many as 3 who I searched for weapons daily before they attended classes. The more positive attention we give them the better. Law enforcement will NOT provide this kind of supervision and care. I urge law enforcement to coordinate with schools whenever they can. Also, I read that this student had recently transferred in from another school. I always held students out for a day or two in order to check with the previous school about any special needs. Students who transfer schools are often in need of special support and we do them no service by entering them into a school without a thorough understanding of their background and any challenges that might come with that background. I used what is called a "wrap-around approach" to serving high at-risk students. We might have a team with as many as 10 adults "wrapping our arms around a student." This included parents, teachers, counselors, school administrators, community-based mental health professionals, law enforcement, CPS, physicians, employers, and after school program providers. The biggest emphasis in such an approach is to build CLOSE, SUPPORTIVE RELATIONSHIPS with the child and the family. "Blame" was not the focus, but rather "seek to understand" and bring more resources to the family to help. These approaches work. They keep students supported and schools safe.

14 years old is well old enough to learn how to be a responsible gun owner. The age and the gun aren’t the problem. The problem is parents and schools that don’t teach kids how to control their emotions and not act out like 4 year olds. “No child is special. You are not unique. Your perspective doesn’t matter. Shut your mouth. Follow the rules and conform.” But that’s not what “modern” parents and schools teach. No, they teach the opposite… And this is the result.

Depends on the state, in Florida ownership of a gun is absolutely legal for a minor on the exception of it used for sporting or hunting and an adult is present while used. It's not entirely unheard of giving your kid a gun. 20-30 years ago kids showed up to school with a gun since they generally went hunting after class. I believe the problem lies behind mental health problems and parenting as a whole instead of gun control. Given there's more guns than people in this country (founded on the idea of killing tyrants). But the kid was given hormone therapy, bullied, identified as trans, and pushed his own narrative to kill people. So you have an already emotionally unstable 14 year old teenager, going through teenage issues, smack him with hormones that his body rejects and then dismantle himself further by dehumanizing the people around him. I think ultimately his motivation was suicide by cop, (typically the case of mass shooters) but the dumb asshole was too much a coward to not off himself. Now another case of a mental psychopath, and an incompetent police investigation. Schools shouldn't be a place that's unprotected. Ever. Protect. Your. Children
