Master System got interesting takes on Golden Axe. It got a port of the first game, you could only play as Axe Battler but you could choose magic from any of the original three characters from the arcade version. Then it got Golden Axe Warrior which on the surface is the Master System's Zelda clone. Even some unique Game Gear Golden Axe Games as well.

There was actually a PS2 remake of the original. It can be found on the Sega ages collection. That said don’t worry if you never played it, you’re not missing much. The original Genesis version is so much better.

Golden Axe is a series whose aesthetics I always loved more than playing it. The swords and sandals stuff, the level that's just a giant eagle, that's all stuff I find super-cool... but the firat belt-scroller I ever played in life was Turtles in Time that is just so mechanically richer and more varied than Golden Axe... what with it being like three years older, that's no surprise. But I just found playing golden axe back in the day to be slower and less fun than TMNT IV, and so I never really gave it a real shot. But I love the Conan movies, love the vibe and therefore going to the length of adding a Conan-intro with a very handsome boy earns this video a thumbs up!
