The town should be called "Superior, MI" As a nod to Mackinac City, and a way to confuse tourists into staying in Michigan when they were planning a trip to Superior.
Considering a car centric city that hasn't pushed it's tax burden on it's residences through the roof with mass transit and government pet projects the city truly is superior.
The collector underpass in IRL works because it passes under I-75 as it is rising to meet the bridge, meaning the underpass doesn't have to sink much or at all (and also constraining the location of the very sad interchange). However, in your build the bridge barely rises at all, meaning you have to sink the underpass below the waterline (coastal flood risk during storms), and worst of all, like 8 blocks of roads have to be graded to compensate, causing lumpys and bumpys everywhere! I think you should raise the overpass and the bridge, and maybe pick up an elevated toll booth asset along the way, and largely eliminate the underpass dip and associated grading in the surrounding area.
I love this community solely because theres so many knowledgeable people in here just talking about making the most realistic cities skylines builds. Never change yall!
Yeah, the underpass is way too close to the lake for comfort... I suspect it would flood regularly, any time there's a good storm blowing through. And I say that after watching a lot of underground carparks being pumped out after recent storms hitting my hometown...
@@isaacanderson5083 are you staying true to real life or improving the layout? The road network is horrendous, the route from the south end of town to the m-32 corridor is need of an upgrade
I love the way you’ve made this series a microcosm of different planning approaches. It’ll be interesting to see how this unnamed city operates. This is a tiny suggestion, but if you’re doing a unique asphalt color, I think it would be really interesting to add a hint of red to the pavement. The red color typically comes from iron, and it was my understanding that there’s rich iron deposits in the Great Lakes region. It could be a unique nod to that.

What I really hate about that interchange is that you make one wrong turn and suddenly you're heading through a toll booth and across a bridge into a different state
I visited Boston some years ago... driving through the city, we took a wrong turn, found ourselves in a tunnel, and ended up heading west out onto the turnpike. Twice in half an hour.
There was a fort near by called Fort Michilimackinac. The city could be named Michili since Mackinac has already been used on the island. Edit: Plus Michili, Michigan is such a fun sounding name.
I love this! Not your typical style but very realistic. A suggestion: on the local side, it feels like it would make sense to asphalt the roads within the collector for continuity. Like that’s the natural village center, and then it gets rural from there out. Very excited for the next episode!

Maybe with a welcome sign (before the interchange) & goodbye sign (the direction after the interchange) from the town painted/attached to it. Also can you recolor the taxi's to make them feel special to the area?
Unless you fixed it off camera, your bikepath-in-the-middle bridge is not connected to the bike path. It looks like it is because of the use of the parallel tool, but you forgot to union the nodes on one side.
I was born and raised in the Lower Peninsula so I am team Michigan all the way, though I will say Mackinac City has one of the weirdest layouts I’ve ever seen in a city. Although I watch all sorts of cities skylines content, the lore that you add to your cities is unmatched. I love the stories and how you invent these situations to justify builds and projects following a similar structure to what kinds of things would be happening on the sidelines of every new project a city would undertake.
Suggestion: in addition to having a different pavement color for Michigan, what about having different streetlight color? This is sometimes seen at city/state lines when one jurisdiction has different regulations or suppliers of streetlights from its neighbor and could create a cool effect!
The new city is off to a good start, may I suggest placing an additional ferry route between the new city and Evergreen? It could serve as a more scenic alternative to the current bus line to Coulliard Shores as well as potentially decongest it, and maybe utilize a higher-capacity ferry via mods to service it alongside the other planned route to Marquette Island.
Agreed, I think there are ferries that also do a three city loop in that region IRL, but I've only ever ridden from the main city to the island and back myself.

Hey Philip I absolutely love your videos and have been watching them for over a year now! I'd really love to see a little tourism/nightlife oriented area along the harbour with a pier, a marina or something like that. I dont know how much sense this makes as the new area is pretty small but just having a ferry harbour right next to a zoo/amusement park/tourism area feels a little out of place to me. It can also be something small but using the seaside as an attraction in a tourism focused area just feels right to me and would surely get more people to visit and enjoy that area. whatever you do I'm sure it will look great and I'd be happy if this helped you as inspiration of some sort. Have a lovely day!
I have been waiting for a new episode of nicolet bay for sooo long Also rooting for Superior You should name the town Chippewa as that is the name of the local Native American tribes around Lake Superior
Andrew Blackbird was the son of an Ottawa chief and served as an official interpreter for the U.S. government in the late 19th century. His account of this area is more or less the official record of this area around the war of 1812. Perhaps Blackbird? Also I’m sure I saw a mod which specifically does the job of scaling spawning at the map edge based on road size - Outside Traffic Balancer [Experimental] maybe that would help.
16:48 i just learned how road markings work...so the lines in the interchange are supposed to show the direction of flow of traffic... so for the interchange you made, it would make sense to use the chevron... in the normal V shape. Cause the cars on the left of the road keep left, denoted by the left line of the 'V' and cars on the right keep right and enter the off ramp, denoted by the right line of the 'V'
You've become my new Zen. I watched the entirety of the Verde Beach series over the past couple weeks (either actively or in the background of my day to day) and have told everyone I know about it. Your content is incredible and when I get my finances together, your patreon will be my first purchase. Thank you for all your amazing work.
I visited Mackinaw City and Mackinac island last summer and have to agree on the chaotic car situation on the mainland! Could be fun to add a campground on the edges, taking inspiration from a lot of the really large and nice campgrounds in the area!
Mr City Planner plays, I've been living on Mackinac Island all winter and playing cities skylines. When I found your channel and I saw you started creating Nicolet Bay my mind was blown! I love your channel andare truly an inspiration for me and this game! Thank you so much great work!
When are the next episode of rebuilding your city? I really liked that one. Ive been watching verde beach all week, and im impressed by your work. Also im subscribed!!
This right here! Michigan is a huge lighthouse state! I remember growing up my parents would try and take me to all the lighthouses in the state. There are a lot.
I have seen a few interchanges like the new one you added. While I’ve only driven on them a handful of times, they looks super scary! For your intersection marking tool work on the interchange, the stripes should be chevrons pointing the opposite direction of traffic. If traffic is heading East, the chevrons should point west, for example.
36:22 - a prime example of why I love CPP content. Realism is not only achieved by making really nice and idyllic cities, but also by the suboptimal decisions that are made all the time in real life. Realism in the planning itself :) same thing with the wonky/sad interchange in the middle of this new city. love it, thanks Philip!
Makes me think of the twin cities Lake Ozark and Osage Beach in Missouri, where Osage Beach is your commercial-fed bedroom community with substantial population, and Lake Ozark being the almost explicitly tourism based business. Maybe we have the town of Lake Superior, and the town of Kichi Gami Beach, split by the highway in the center.
I think it would be really cool if you made a video walking around your cities in first person. Like overcharged egg did in Ilos. Verde beach is an amazing city, i believe I talk for a lot of us when I say that the city would look really nice from ground level.
Not the most flattering name, but "Wolverine Coast" feels like a good fit as it emphasizes the fact that the town is located in Michigan, or the Wolverine State, which was the developer's original goal when concieving the plans.
Your explanation of why you built out the road network the way you did (around the 6 min mark) is the special sauce for your videos. It's an insight into the mind of a city planner, and it's the #1 reason I enjoy your channel so much!
Yes!!!I love the storytelling elements of your builds. Now we've got characters and faces to go with names?!! I love it! So creative and imaginative. Highlight of my Saturday morning!
This is one of very few gaming channels I watch on UA-cam. Your content is great, and very fun to watch! I love the way real life locations inspire your builds. Clearwater is my favorite, but I watch every upload! Thanks for being excellent, and keep up the great, creative, inspiring work you're doing here! You always make me want to play!
Asphalt over here is pretty dark when it's brand new and fresh but fades to more grey over the years to come. and seeing it's a new neighborhood it makes sense to have darker roads!
My dad's family grew up in St. Ignace just across from Mackinaw City on the Upper Peninsula. My great uncle ran a Ferry to and from the Lower Peninsula before the bridge was created. Seeing this build come together as both an Anishnabe and Michigan Native is cool.
When the amusement park does get built, I'd love it if it was named Thunder Falls after the abandoned waterpark in Mackinaw City. Great memories there. You should also pull an Uno Reverse Card and name the city St. Ignace. Love the videos. 😄
The horrifying interchange reminds me a LOT of the Arroyo Seco Parkway in LA, the first freeway in the country. Horrendous on/off ramps, feels like death every time you have to use them. By far my favorite memory was when I drove down it in my volvo station wagon with a couch hanging out the back, the day I became a real Angeleno (barf at the term but such is life).
I've been meaning to comment this for months, but when you laugh you giggle JUST like my old GM. He is an awesome dude and I was always excited to work with him. Thanks for the random bit of unintended nostalgia lmao
Hearing you talk about not so great cities like car-centric downtowns, I’d love to see you create your “perfect city.” If you ever need more video ideas.
Awesome video! You do such a good job of explaining what you're doing, how you're doing it and why. Very helpful to learn the details of the game/ mods. And watching the city slowly come together is enjoyable too.
Shoot dang, the new area looks good! I just have to say that I've been binging the Nicolet Bay series, and I just love the vibe of loosely recreating real-world locations in the game while adding your own lore. This series, along with your beginners build guide, has inspired me to pick the game back up after giving up in frustration over a year ago, and my building has massively improved just by thinking of my city in terms of the stories that built it. Now, instead of bottle-necking each time at 10k population and not knowing what to do, I'm up to 30k comfortably, and I know that I can keep growing with ease. Six figure population or bust~ Thanks, CPP!
Yet another phantastic Phil episode of NB! This new city is intriguing and I can’t wait to see how it turns out! My relatives lived in Kalamazoo, MI for a while and then in Ft. Atkinson, WI, so I’m going to try to remain neutral! 😂 And give Banjo a squish for me! What a sweet dog! 🥰
About the weird node around the 15:00: try using node controller to change its node type from "Custom" to "Middle"! That should do the trick. Love your videos!
I would like to say firstly that I love the series, your story telling and all is very great Mr CPP. I have been watching over the series the past week using the playlist feature and I’ve made it through episode 16, when I went to the next episode it was #18 and there was some significant changes spoiled to me and I had to go back through your videos and find episode 17. If you see this, it would be great if you could fix that so that nobody else gets a surprise of unseen changes.
it's so cool that you're covering this little known location outside of people who've visited as someone who grew up going to these places, so awesome!!!!
You should raise the highway a few meters to make that bridge on the highway more realistic. A dip that drastic would be a flooding concern. More likely they would take some fill and slope up the highway a couple meters
Hey Phil, just two ideas. Look for a suitable location in suburban Evergreen for a Memorial Hospital. We could be talking about a larger 3-story or 5-story hospital to break up the suburban skyline. It's actually quite common to see in smaller regional cities. (Ex. Lancaster, PA or Tampa, FL.) Around the hospital add a parking garage, surrounded by some townhomes, or small condos to add some texture or flow into the taller hospital. Second, I know the airport was a recent addition. But consider adding a second runway (diagonal or parallel to the original). Normally in a regional area such as Nicolet Bay, you would see a regional airport with some private jets accompanied with a two runway airport. Thanks!
Very nice. As someone who has been to Mackinaw City many times, you have definitely caught the vibe of this town. A couple of notes about the real Mackinaw city. The awkward I-75 interchange does not usually have too many issues and I believe that is due to the fact that most people leave town going south instead of going over the bridge. There is a normal exit to I-75 just out of town which I belive handles a good amount of the outbound traffic. There actually use to be a large Waterpark on this route out of town right along the side of I-75. Now all you need are the 50 t-shirt shops in downtown to make it super realistic. ☺️
I think the beach behind the hotels needs some decorations and maybe an invisible walking path or park people generator. I've watched lots of garden YT channels visit this real life area for the Grand Garden Show, and the coast line is used in such a beautiful way. There are coastline restaurants, outdoor cocktail areas, lounge areas, and swimming pools. It is on my bucket list to visit there someday.
Local government in Istanbul replaced horse carriages in Istanbul's islands with small electric vehicles back in 2020 in order to prevent animal cruelty. You can maybe consider that for Marquette Island.
You should add state welcome signs to each side of the bridge
💯 and the Michigan one needs to be the one that says “Pure Michigan” so hopefully there’s an asset on the workshop for that
I wasn't able to find welcome signs, but I did come up with something. If anyone wants to make one, I will FOR SURE add it to the build!

whatever you do I'm sure it will look great and I'd be happy if this helped you as inspiration of some sort.
Have a lovely day!
I have been waiting for a new episode of nicolet bay for sooo long
Also rooting for Superior
You should name the town Chippewa as that is the name of the local Native American tribes around Lake Superior
So do I 😅😅😅
Andrew Blackbird was the son of an Ottawa chief and served as an official interpreter for the U.S. government in the late 19th century. His account of this area is more or less the official record of this area around the war of 1812. Perhaps Blackbird?
Also I’m sure I saw a mod which specifically does the job of scaling spawning at the map edge based on road size - Outside Traffic Balancer [Experimental] maybe that would help.
I want to suggest the name "michilimackinac" after the old fort that used to be there.
I love this series!
Cycle path bisecting the collector. I can hear city planners across the country gleefully clapping their hands as you provide them with a new idea!
Phil, you have a family and a job, I appreciate your time bringing us this entertainment!
Could we have a lighthouse for the new city, please? A great landmark it would be.
If traffic is heading East, the chevrons should point west, for example.
love superior, we need a map combining all your cities and their lore
Another great build with unique city character and charm. Looking forward to seeing this city develop with the zoo and parks additions.
I think it would be really cool if you made a video walking around your cities in first person. Like overcharged egg did in Ilos. Verde beach is an amazing city, i believe I talk for a lot of us when I say that the city would look really nice from ground level.
I’m such a big fan of the stories you build for your cities
Can imagine fireworks coming over across the strait and the residents on the opposite side enjoying the show
4th of July would go crazy ong
Especially from the beach oml
Great work!!!
Close by is also the Wilderness State Park, which is probably my favourite place for camping or renting a small cabin.
I don't think anyone would be mad if you did an urbanism retrofit (and related it to real life) of this new city
I love how there's a whole story to this. It makes the gameplay so much more interesting!
Not the most flattering name, but "Wolverine Coast" feels like a good fit as it emphasizes the fact that the town is located in Michigan, or the Wolverine State, which was the developer's original goal when concieving the plans.
The bike path running down the middle of the collector would look great with some trees lining it
This is strangely nostalgic. Pleasingly nostalgic. Reminds me of the street I grew up on as a kid.
I don't have a horse in this race so I'm just rooting for Nicolet Bay here!
This is an incredible layout. My struggle is developing the forward thinking and skill with all the tools and mods.
21:15 "Perfect" and then the song that comes up! very nice.
I love that you’re including Michigan! It’s nice to see my state represented! 🧤
really cool seeing you lay out a whole town at once. love how you do road networks!
That interchange is absolutely egregious. I hate it and I love it. Thank you so much for showing this
Asphalt over here is pretty dark when it's brand new and fresh but fades to more grey over the years to come. and seeing it's a new neighborhood it makes sense to have darker roads!
My dad's family grew up in St. Ignace just across from Mackinaw City on the Upper Peninsula. My great uncle ran a Ferry to and from the Lower Peninsula before the bridge was created. Seeing this build come together as both an Anishnabe and Michigan Native is cool.
Always a great time watching you plan, explain & play... Very informative and intertaining. Thanks and more please ✌😁
That city looks like a caricature of American motor-oriented cities, that interchange must be horrifying to drive through.
Every time I look at that interchange my brain fills with maniacal laughter
Being from the upper peninsula of Michigan, this series so awesome to watch
I've been meaning to comment this for months, but when you laugh you giggle JUST like my old GM. He is an awesome dude and I was always excited to work with him. Thanks for the random bit of unintended nostalgia lmao
Hearing you talk about not so great cities like car-centric downtowns, I’d love to see you create your “perfect city.” If you ever need more video ideas.
I love how you included and took inspiration to the famous Michigan left turn lol
Michigander popping in to say I love this series
I would like to say firstly that I love the series, your story telling and all is very great Mr CPP. I have been watching over the series the past week using the playlist feature and I’ve made it through episode 16, when I went to the next episode it was #18 and there was some significant changes spoiled to me and I had to go back through your videos and find episode 17. If you see this, it would be great if you could fix that so that nobody else gets a surprise of unseen changes.
Ey! Good to see the fam back in action!
That city looks amazing. I wish they could make a street that has parallel parking spots on the side of the road! Keep up the great content man :)
LOVED this episode and the idea, can't wait for the next episode
Ah! Sweet as Michigander I got excited about this Mackinaw/MAckinac Island episode :) - great inspiration for Plazas and promenades
it's so cool that you're covering this little known location outside of people who've visited as someone who grew up going to these places, so awesome!!!!
Thanks for all the great videos Phil!
love watching the thinking process here!
Liked this episode a lot. Gave me some inspiration for Sanak Lake. Haha.
Can't wait for the next one
Engagement comment, thank for the videos! The effort you put in really shows.
Really enjoying this series! Much love from Clearwater County
Loved this episode! You're the best, CP x
Thanks Phil, great work as always!
Thanks!
That jog in the double collector drives me crazy lol. Love the rest!
Didn't realise it till now and the recent trailer for the Owen Wilson biopic but the calmness of your narration has an essence of Bob Ross.
Local government in Istanbul replaced horse carriages in Istanbul's islands with small electric vehicles back in 2020 in order to prevent animal cruelty. You can maybe consider that for Marquette Island.
