I think Robin Williams is a very apt analogy. This is such a sad song, but so peppy. The words are her mood, but the music is her acting.

“I’m so depressed I act like it’s my birthday”. It’s clear that Taylor has been the recipient of some good quality therapy. In Dialectical Behavioural Therapy they teach something called ‘Opposite to Emotion Action’ and it’s one of the coping skills I use most often. It’s pretty self explanatory but the idea is that if you consciously act like it’s your birthday during a depressive bout, eventually you can pull yourself out of it. That’s what this song makes me think of anyway.

That makes sense. I always kind of related that part to her singing 22 every night on the Eras your since it’s about her birthday but yours makes more sense 😂😂

@@Amandaarford83 I mean, I honestly have no idea. Your theory makes just as much sense as mine. I just often notice lyrics that seem like they might relate to therapy and a while back someone commented on a video pretty much saying the same thing, so I started to notice it even more. I always joke with my friends that you can’t really tell when I’m struggling because I’m usually practicing being the opposite “like it’s my birthday”.

This was a lovely surprise. Not everyone gets the cleverness behind some of Taylor's 'glitter gel pen' songs. They may sound like vapid pop but there's intelligence and depth there if someone's comprehension skills are switched on. Like people below have said: The Rep Tour performances are highly entertaining - I also have a soft spot for her Out of The Woods 1989 world tour performance. Her ability to genre jump is impressive. That's why the Eras Tour was such a good idea. It's not just three hours of her teenage love songs - it's a ride going from pop, to country to edm, to r&b, to rap to folk. I've been to hundreds of Live shows and stadium concerts but I'll never forgot that tour.

Welcome to the world of the "Taylor sad bop" the lyrics of this would break your heart but it's sent to a banging dance track.
Having said that you can see how much fun she's having and also check out the people she working with everyone has a smile. The majority of her band etc have been with her for years .
She has an incredible work ethic and designs much of the sets etc herself as well as the music .
She directs and designs her music videos now.

I’m surprised you actually enjoyed this song. Her haters described this as “an annoying kid’s bop song”, but to me it’s a perfect example of a sad bop. It’s also the second most streamed song from The Tortured Poets Department if I remember correctly (at least during when your reaction vid was released).
Anyone who is going through a difficult time, but still chooses to get up and work their butts off could easily relate to the line “I cry a lot but I’m so productive”. It’s almost a mantra of some sort.

I would suggest "Don't Blame Me" from the Reputation Tour, "Intro + Ready For It" from Reputation Tour (the entire Reputation Tour is available to watch)... for something more recent, I'd suggest "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me" from the Eras tour (the staging of it to fit into the "witch" theme is pretty spectacular, & it's definitely a fan favorite from her latest album).

@IzzyIzenstain Only problem you may run into with "Who's Afraid..." is that most available videos are recorded by fans on cell phones - so, while the visuals are captivating, the audio is not ideal (crowd noise &/or distortion). It also is a condensed version of the song (since her Eras Tour basically covers 10 albums over 3 1/2 hours, she shortens or combines some selections). Your best bet may be to do a reaction where you listen to the song first, then watch the live performance. 🤷‍♂️

She and her back up singers, the venue…it’s incredible. I wouldn’t steer you wrong on that. Another iconic big stage performance is “Don’t Blame Me” live from her Reputation tour. Just next level entertaining, and a chance to check out a bit of her older material. Couldn’t be more different than Long Pond studio Taylor, but incredible for sure. So true about the work ethic. But also, there is an art to this that goes beyond that, imo.
I often think about something Taylor said in an interview, (paraphrased from memory) about how when she was coming up the music industry would just pick talented, eager teenagers, throw them in the deep end to wring as much value as possible from them, then when they get crushed or slowly figure out how to deal, they get replaced with the next new thing.
But that didn't happen with her, and I feel like people sometimes don't appreciate enough that she's found a way to stay in the game, and also make absolutely insane working conditions sustainable (for her). Like right now, she's doing a 2y tour where she has to be on point, reliably, for 3,5 hours up to 5 days in a row, emoting stories about her life, with thousands of eyes and cameras catching her every micro expression.
And she not only did that, flawlessly, but found a way to communicate what is going on with her internally, in real time - a way to add enough to the narrative so it remains authentic rather than rote, but crucially not by breaking or undermining it, eg with a sad interview. Instead, she wrote, recorded, released an intensely diaristic 31 song album, and integrated that into her ongoing tour. That's an insane artistic achievement!
In the song, she says, you gotta fake it til you make it - that's work ethic. But her making and then performing the song, as documented in the video, is something more - she already made it, there was no need for this, and it's the opposite of faking it. To me, that part is art, and I feel like, somehow, this is exactly what makes her life and career harder, but sustainable (for her).

It would make sense if she had a little bit of Sir Paul’s sound as they’ve been almost like family for many years. She’s best friends with Stella McCartney. Sir Paul came to the Kelce Super Bowl where Taylor was just to say hello and give her a squeeze. He’s another father figure in her life and it’s really beautiful that she has such an icon to go to if she ever needs it. We don’t know if she ever has, but as you’ve pointed out, she does have some songs that give Beetles Vibes. Wouldn’t it be so fun to hear stories from his Beetles Days?? Oh to be a fly on the wall. I’ll bet they all have a really great time together. Stella is like her sister and I Sir Paul like her father. Sign me up. So cool. Jason and Ed Kelce were stunned to see him walk into the suite. They had not yet seen the level of fame that Taylor had up until that moment. It clicked and the 2 men were in awe of seeing him in person.
Taylor calls that slide under the stage a “rocket sled”. She made a short video about it and how fun it was. 😂
She is such a born entertainer. Where she shines is during her acoustic section of her concerts. She’s been mashing 2 songs together on guitar and then 2 songs mashed on piano. The results of the mashups are so beautifully done that you really wouldn’t know that they were two songs if you weren’t aware of her catalog. It’s a highly anticipated part of the concert to see what songs will be the acoustic surprise songs. Mind blowing how talented she really is. She can play 8-10 instruments and her songs all start off as acoustic as she’s writing them. So to hear them in their original form is really something special.

She and Joe Alwyn broke up two weeks or so before the tour started (and she does three or more months of rehearsals first). They got together in 2016, it was her longest relationship to date. When the tour started, some of the songs had her crying on the stage. She put it all out there every night anyway; fans paid for tickets. She has a very special relationship with her fans.
Some weeks later, she got into a rebound relationship with Matty Healy of the 1975 Some believe they were in a 10 year affair; personally, I think that's bullshit. It lasted about as long as her early relationships with Joe Jonas, Jake Gyllenhaal, or John Mayer. I know they wrote some songs back a decade ago (weren't on the album, though); a friendly acquaintance being extrapolated into a decade long affair is reading too much into it, imo. Another way of slut shaming her (the media's standard way of dismissing her).
