I wish my teachers had been this passionate when I was in school. Inspiring, supportive and encouraging without being patronising or condescending toward the kids. Well done Jamie Oliver
I hate when people try to slag Jamie because this video shows that he's a great teacher and he knows his stuff. Yes, he's not a Michelin starred chef like Marco Pierre White or Gordon Ramsay but he's a guy who cares about food and cares about people. And food looks damn good too!
+TheMasterCylinder Most people don't know who Marco Pierre or Gordon Ramsay are (I fall into that category :D) since they don't need to know. All they need to know is to be able to prepare some nice meal for themselves or the people they care about. This is exactly what Jamie teaches. If you want to be a five star pro chef then you have to go and spend a couple of years in a higher educational institution where you will learn all you want but even there you will learn only the basics for what is to come in a life as a professional chef. I really love Jamie and what he's doing. I love how he tries to teach people not only how to cook but also how to improve their lives through cooking healthy meals.
Great job Jamie. Examples of solid, honest, and heart-felt teaching like this are one of the reasons so many of us here in the States have always liked you and been behind your projects.
I'm working from home (COVID-19) and want to learn how to cook. I've been watching knife skill videos all day today and this was by far the most informative. Jamie's positivity and love for what he's doing made it very fun to watch.

I've had mixed emotions over Jamie in the past but to see him here, in his element, not being steered by the network ninnies, I'm impressed and I learned something, even though I do know all the "skill drills" demonstrated here. As far as the students trying to go faster and trying to learn to go fast in prep for anyone, it's the same with any developed skill, from cooking to running thru a shoot house in the military. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Instead of focusing on faster, people should focus on smooth and even, no matter how slow you have to go at first. Speed comes as a matter of course. Repetition trains muscle memory and creates new neural pathways. Those bring the speed, not yelling in your mind's ear to hurry the f$@! up. Get the proper technique down even though you are currently the slowest person on earth and you'll be zipping through slice and dice like Jaime in no time. :)
May or may not have just practiced this on my bed with a hunting knife and notebook. had nothing to chop up but i got the motions right seeing a lot of comments about how none of the students will shut up while he's cooking, and i'm like, why? most of what i was hearing were "wow"s, "holy shit"s, and other such mumbles of amazement and admiration, and when they weren't gawking, they were commenting about what jamie was doing, saying stuff about the flavors and how jamie's not chopping his fingers off. besides, they weren't loud, jamie wasn't talking, and there were moments of silence.
No, if is not a question, shut up until it ends. You may not understand it. Get in a professional kitchen and you'll get me. Jamie said that he is not going to talk because he wanted their attention, every-single-move must be watched and learned before saying "wow" "holy shit". But, well, they just have 16 years, they can't stop sayin' stuff. Other ppl would get grossly pissed off and just bitch slap everyone 😂
on a personal level it wasn't that bad but I like to have silence when a teacher or master is doing a demo. When we would have demos in my art classes and machinist classes it would be very annoying as a student trying to concentrate completely on what the teacher is doing while others continue to make comments (related or not) that are ostensibly irrelevant and chatter. It is always breaking your focus so I look at it as showing a bit more respect for the other people trying to learn. I also am a no non-sense kind of guy when learning things...I want everyone to shut up and just stop socializing and place all focus on the task at hand haha

The very first restaurant I cooked in, I was a beginner prep cook and graduated to a line cook. I was taught by a wonderful chef who took the time to teach me. I'm forever in his debt.
Jamie Oliver has talent for cooking, but a real gift with leadership and charisma. He can get you fired up and confident in yourself with only a minute or two of talking. He uses positive reinforcement to build people up mentally very well. They may be dismal cooks, but at least they leave feeling self sufficient, understand the basic principles of knife technique and have one decent recipe under their belt. They may still order take-away most nights, but they have the ability to make a simple, delicious dish when the time calls. Back in 2007, my girlfriend made me potato pancakes for my birthday in November. It's not a difficult dish, but it's my favorite. We got married in March 2009. I'm dismal at cooking with heat, but she's been on a salad kick lately and I took some time to slice up tomatoes, cucumbers and accidentally figured out how to chiffonade with lettuce. Lettuce ribbons seem fancy when you buy food, so I thought for a second on how I could easily make lettuce ribbons and rolling them up and cutting seemed like the most efficient method. She was really impressed and thankful that I did all the prep for her. Small things like that reinforce the marital bond.
Fantastic teacher! He instilled both knowledge AND confidence, while keeping the finer points out-of-the- way. Few of these young people may actually pursue the culinary arts as professionals, but they darn well will know how to cook for themselves and their families! Bravo Jamie Oliver!
Jamie you are an excellent teacher. I was a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher and I was never as good as you. You are great! Your demonstration, skills and application techniques are great. You are an excellent teacher.
Wow! Probably the _best_ down and dirty knife skills tutorial on UA-cam! Great stuff! I would love to study with him; I love his teaching style. I must have watched this video 10 times through now! Great stuff. I wish he would do a more comprehensive youtube video on different knife cutting techniques besides the main 3 demonstrated here (cross chopping, tap chopping, and rock chopping). He mentioned that there were more, and I'd love to learn them all! I really hope you're reading this Mr. Oliver! =)
My friend, he's a culinary instructor at this local university and outside of work, he seems so laid back and relaxed. Sometimes I call him a sloth. Haha. Not nice of me. But when he's teaching, he is exactly like Jamie in this clip. He's energetic, talkative but always on point. His students looks at him in amazed every time he teaches them something. And if I haven't been visiting him at work, I would never know my friend is so great and cool in his field of work. Much respect to all culinary people!
with flipping food in a pan i found the best way to practice is simply uncooked rice, poor a cup or so in depending on pan size and practice away haha worst off you need the broom :)
I'm so happy right now. Jamie - from the bottom of my heart - you are amazing. My kitchen each night features you and Gennaro teaching me new things. However, my knife skills have been a bit lacking - now I know what I've been doing wrong.
Having an adult tell you they are proud of you is bigger than words, he’s not only teaching them cooking he’s teaching them that they “can” in life. Rad
There you have it. Master Chef giving excellent tips. I find this awesome, and did not pickup on foul language if any was said. Thanks a bunch for sharing.
Okay I thought I was going crazy. Thinking to myself "damn that dude's aggressive with his knife against that board, but hey he's a pro so what do I know?"
Professional chef, 26 years. Jamie Oliver is awesome and did a fantastic job with these students. My only criticism is the way he cleans his blade. Just pull the cutting board flush with the edge of the table, turn the knife on its side, lay it flat against the edge, and draw it down on each side. Perfectly clean, no chance of dragging your fingerprints along the edge of the blade. I've seen him do it a million times throughout the years on various cooking shows and it skeevs me out. Also, Joe Cool in the black jacket at 4:55 needs to learn to use a fork. It's a public plate, dude!
He is SUCH Great Teacher!!! :) So Humble and Encouraging!! That's SO refreshing to see!! Jamie Oliver is Really into Teaching the kids and improving their life through cooking! Good on him!!
This is the kind of food you can't fuck up, the seasoning will pull it through. So good job on teaching, and good strategy too - make them succeed first thing. And the result is a healthier meal than they would regularly get. All around fantastic job, Jamie!

0:53 that jedi mind trick
Yo I didn't even peep that bit it was legit a mind trick. Good catch
Oliver! =)
can someone tell me the full recipe?
I've been looking for one for ages now.
This Man-Jamie Oliver is for sure one of the greatest cooks and educators of food in general in our world today! :)
with flipping food in a pan i found the best way to practice is simply uncooked rice, poor a cup or so in depending on pan size and practice away haha worst off you need the broom :)
"This knife, you need to be able to use this"
...emo girl looks around nervously
Hahaha I caught that sweet little moment to.
Emo people always look like a deer in headlights. It’s required.
self mutilation really isnt funny.
@@bradrector it is when it's not real
If anyone were interested in a filet au wrist, she's got you covered
Now all you have to do is teach people how to eat it. You don't spit out as you bite, especially on a communal plate. That's very rude and gross !!
+MUDSWAT considering that everybody ate with the same fork that was in Jamie's mouth, I don't think that it is anymore an issue
lol
LOL
+Lightspit who wouldn't have Jamie inside them ; )
+Lightspit pretty sure he took a new one every time.
I'm so happy right now. Jamie - from the bottom of my heart - you are amazing. My kitchen each night features you and Gennaro teaching me new things. However, my knife skills have been a bit lacking - now I know what I've been doing wrong.
love the way Jamie is so encouraging and shows that chefs don't need to be screaming abuse to get great results, awesome man
15:47 "I mean appart from the old jizz around the outside" LOL I was in bits! XD
"Would you come raving with me at the end of a cliff, would you?"
Whole Class: "Yeah"
XD
Apparently they trust him that much. lol
I bloddy would too! xD
Gordon ramsey and jamie Oliver make chefs look like badasses
These kids will take this on in their lives and run with it. I applaud Oliver on this video.
From 2021, thanks M. Oliver. So far, all your recipes (mostly basics along with free extras) I've done were awesome !
you can see he is clearly pissed off while he's cooking and they won't shut up
***** hahaha he would have been like: "Ah you fucking donkeys, pay attention"
10Dante4 I think it was a joke. "Make space for the gourmet!"
10Dante4 Well he's not talking. Of course they're going to start talking about the stuff he's doing.
Αντ ωνία Δεν είπα πουθενά ότι χρησιμοποιεί strong language o Jamie
Well they all are teens. And teens like to talk
That Lola girl from EastEnders on here at 5:07 - 5:12
12:12 That's exactly how I'm watching this video.
TheLonelyAstronaut lol. Me too.
Having an adult tell you they are proud of you is bigger than words, he’s not only teaching them cooking he’s teaching them that they “can” in life. Rad
This is just what we need to teach kids! Excellent teacher you are Jamie!
You are amazing and good teachers and I love you
I would love to join this school!!! which pans are been used by the way?
Thought it was Calphalon at first, but the red dot in the center of the pan gives it away. It's T-Fal's Jamie Oliver collection.
8:13 "Guaranteed?"
Oliver: u cheeky cu--
Jamie shows he loves the kids as much as he loves cooking. Wonderful man.
There you have it. Master Chef giving excellent tips. I find this awesome, and did not pickup
on foul language if any was said. Thanks a bunch for sharing.
The hickey on the student's neck at 16:58. LOL
I believe that’s why he said he wishes he was 16 again.
Can always tell a chef that doesn't sharpen his own knives. he he
Made me cringe watching him slam his knives against the board and dragging them sideways.
Okay I thought I was going crazy. Thinking to myself "damn that dude's aggressive with his knife against that board, but hey he's a pro so what do I know?"
@The Gonad He teaches them about food, but not how to treat a knife? That's like teaching someone to breathe, but not giving them air.
GunsNBudder I
He is SUCH Great Teacher!!!
Amazing teacher
Jamie the Incredible, thats how a teacher should look like
"warning: strong language"
did someone confused Gordon Ramsey with Jamie Oliver?
Only in the background by the students. You have to listen for it.
Jamie is an incredible, passionate teacher. Bravo!
I want Jamie as my teacher when I go to school. God I love this man.
11:18 Lola from Eastenders?
yep
