Male motorcyclists feel the need to rationalize their decisions to buy new bikes. But at the end of the day they just damned well want that new bike! No matter how good the bike you have, the "new girl" in the shop window will look better. And your mind will be consumed by her until you get her. There is, literally, no end to it. Still, its fun to see the comparisons made. Keep it up mate. Right now we need all this kind of entertainment we can get.
Funny, I went through that in my head before purchasing my bike. Originally I wanted to buy a scooter but ended up with a motorcycle because of less restrictions. My problem is finding the right safety gear that meets my comfort protection , comfort fit and style💕 That always comes with a big price tag. I've been watching motorcycle crash/accident videos before and after purchasing my motorcycle. That helps with passing time, helps open my mind and keeping myself focus
if you are still looking for a new bike it means that the one you have doesn't meet your expectation. I had few bikes in my life and the one I had was always the best one, at least for around 3 years
After a driveshaft failure on my BMW R1150GS I bought a 2019 CB500X. The intention was to sell the BMW, but for the same reasons you upgraded (long distance touring) my BMW has a permanent home. The CB500X meets and exceeds all local duties so it is my great fortune to be able keep both. You made the right decision for your circumstances.
Is good to have you back, I am glad you are following your dreams, I am 57 years old and I have my first motorcycle 3 months a go a Honda cb500x 2019 red just like yours and in winter it has been in my garage, so far it is all what I need or can handle seems I am just 5'5 and starting to feel my age I can not have anything bigger. Just want to say, for the sake of anybody wanting a 500x, though your review is honest and informative, for anyone who is 75kg or less, the suspension both on and off road is quite reasonable and power to weight is good if you have 110klh limits such as Australian roads, and though I have riden more exciting machines, the 500 will be always my all round love. I'm a BMW 1200 GSA driver and i don't need all those bells and whistles and i rarely change the settings but it's so cool and comfortable that i started to love it . After 3 years i love my BMW als i love my wife and that's why i'm often alone on the road with my BMW 1200 GSA.

One of the best reviewers I've ever come across on UA-cam. You've helped me decide to hang onto my F650GS for at least another year rather than go for the 500X. I'm hoping that Honda will introduce a CB650X that will introduce a little more power when you need it and eliminate the vibration issue. I like long rides, and I tend to cruise at right around the vibration speed, so the Honda will have to wait.
Thanks for sharing another very pleasant ride with us RM. Portugal looks like paradise. I had a ride planned for early May, from my home in Sydney to see an old friend on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland; a mouthwatering round trip of around 2200 klms. But now my BMW, like yours, is undercover with the trickle charger plugged in. Thanks again for the distraction.

I own a 2003 Harley Davidson Softail Duece 100th anniversary with 14/150 paint scheme , I have been wanting a on/ off road touring bike and have been taking my time in choosing one however the BMW stands way out as the best so far . The lack of power and torque of some bikes like the Honda 500 would not work for me as I’m 200lbs and need the confidence of reserve power for passing , dodging idiots etc. I’m glad to see you chose the better built and quality of the BMW , I feel a BMW is in my near future 🤩🇺🇸 BTW I absolutely love the riding video of the absolutely beautiful roads and scenery , thank you!
Thanks for the vid, enjoy your vids. When i moved to Thailand a few years ago i tested numerous bikes and the CB500X was one of them. Hired the X for a few days and went riding in the northern mountains and the bike was definitely under powered in the mountains IMO and that ruled the bike out for me as well as the vibrations. I ride similar to you as in don't like being in the upper rev range. Just love the pull of the Triumph big twins where you don't need the tacho bouncing off the rev limiter to get good usable power. Another reason i am interested in the 900XR. An observation, not a criticism, about when you put the HP and TQ figures up it may have been beneficial to put up the bike weights as i also have a 765RS and the low weight of the bike plus plenty of HP seems that the torque is adequate for that bike. Plenty in the mid range of the tacho for me anyway. I'm interested in having a look at the 900s in the flesh, R and XR but have no idea if or when they will get to Thailand. Maybe after Kung Flu is sorted?
I rode my 500x on one of the twistiest UK roads with glorious scenery between Masham and Richmond. The bike just flicked in and out of the corners, just moving up and down the mid gears kept the bike in the torque curve and overtaking was fairly easy when necessary. I felt really connected to the bike and the ride was shear bliss for mile after mile. The simplicity of the bike added not subtracted from the experience. For the money it is probably the best value bike out there and I will be getting the 2022 version next spring (if the UK supply chain hasn't collapsed meantime). I am sure the BMW is a great bike but the extra money, less MPG, more costly servicing isn't worth it for me.
I agree! I sold the BMW after a few months, because it turned out to be a massive disappointment. I do miss my 500X and am looking forward to trying the new 2022 model. Ride safe :)

Thanks for your interesting comparison video. I can only compare a 2018 1200 RT with my new F900 XR and they are somewhat like chalk and cheese. The 900XR is certainly lighter (perhaps by about 60 kg so actually more bhp/tonne), tips beautifully into bends but has a pesky chain that needs cleaning/lubrication periodically. Just at the first 600 mile service point now and I'm lovin' it as they say in McDonald's with the only real niggles being: 1) Mudguards are so absurdly short that the brown stuff is thrown up into various nooks and crannies 2) A rather wooden feeling rear brake (fronts are excellent) 3) Chain has required retensioning rather earlier than expected and 4) Somewhat too short a side-stand giving the bike giving an alarming lean when parked on level ground. Note something like the Hornig side-stand enlarger elegantly corrects the height and gives more confidence on soft ground. Oh and if you use a pressure wash on the swing arm area it peels off the luggage weight limit and chain adjustment glued-on labels. Apart from that, yes, it gets the pulse racing. I'm seeing plenty of bikes naturally self-isolating on the road today clearly taking more notice of Chief Medical Officer's encouragement to get out in the countryside than from anxious tut tutting neighbours and pedestrians looking for the next toilet roll.
I owned two bikes for some time. It was great, but finally I decided to own only one and it feels even better, because I now only ride the more luxurious one. On the other hand I often remember good times with the old one!
Excellent review and comparison between two different $$$ motorcycles, but then, I believe most of us have to decide between all available offering and get the one that will bring us more happiness! Congrats excellent point of views and explanation.
Glad you saw fit to describe the seat as a church pew! I've ordered an XR Tour, hopefully it will be here by February. I test rode a demo and commented on the absolute plank of a seat. "Oh," said the salesperson, "you can get a BMW comfort seat for (wait for it) about $800." (Australian) I expressed my dismay at this incredible rip off, and to be fair, he offered to find one "at cost" - still about $600. Think I will use my airhawk while I source a less ridiculously priced option.
Ive been riding for may years and am now at the point of buying my last bike before I hang up my boots, the CB500X was on my radar, that is until I saw your review, then I saw another review on the Yamaha Tracer, another bike I was thinking of, I do very much enjoy your open and honest reviews ( unlike Triumph of late). Ive looked at Binelli and scooters ( Got a Forza for fun), finally having BMW in my sights, therefore this review was right on target.
This is the first of your videos that I found to be more about your mottoes than your motorbikes. More neutral delivery would lessen the irritation that the viewer might feel at times. Ride safe :-)

Good review, the vibration issue on the Honda is what scared me away from a CB500X. Still haven’t pulled the trigger on another new ride here, time will tell.

I have a Harley and a Moto Guzzi, always like a lil something different, which my 2 now are, like ppl to see something out of the norm, rare to have when out on the road. I too had a Triumph Street Triple, nice bike, but here in Florida of the USA, it’s a long hot humid summertime for 8months/yr, so really my demographics have taken the fun out of riding the motorcycles, so the newer Triumph was sold. But with all that said, I still look and see, maybe I’ll pull the trigger for another garage queen, 😂 IDK, time will tell, I do like the CMM, and the Norton models coming out soon, sure wish I could get them over here 👈
Strange when I first saw this I thought oh Yam MT07/MT09 with a bigger silencer ,was a surprise to find its a Bemmer ,looks like a bigger version of the Honda CB500x as well in this colour scheme . Will check out your later views to see what its actually like as a riders bike !
I wanted to try the 2019 Honda CB500X, but no one in my area had one in stock. So I ended up with a new 2018 Kawi Versys 650. Very happy, and it is SO smooth....vibrations are so minimal. And it has more power than I need, so I think I ended up with the right bike. You're not the only one to say the CB500X has some vibrations at higher rpm.
You're right - an oversight on my part, I should have mentioned that. I would average about 3.3 litres per 100km on my CB500X, which was astonishingly good. I'm only seeing 4.7 on the BMW, so more or less 50% worse. Oh well, the Triumph Rocket would have been worse still! Ride safe :)
RocketMan - yes I’m still astonished with my CB500X fuel economy. Maybe because it is a cheaper bike I feel more carefree about it. Mind you it is my second bike. I use a T120 for longer trips with pillion. By the way, I tried the new Tiger 900 GT Pro, both with and without a pillion. I think it’s a mixed bag. Certainly powerful with more bells and whistles, a very safe bike I think; but my partner did not enjoy being a pillion on it, especially without a top box. I don’t think it will replace my CBX or Bonnie.
@@RocketMan_Moto That's amazing! I have a cb500x of 2015 (euro3 normative) and I've never managed less than 3,5 or so, and lately i use to get 4 or 3,9 all the time. I admit I am not the slowest driver out there though... I once tried one of the newer versions with the less pollutant engine and I felt that the later Cb500x's are worse in mid-rev than the older ones and a mechanic told me it¡s because of the anti-pollution normative of 2016. I also do not feel the vibration you talked about. THe BMW is instead built from scratch to newer standards and doesn't need to adapt any older engine. PErhaps this is an advantatge. BTW I really liked this because I also fell in love at first sight with the BMW900XR (as most of the riders I know) and considered it, but when I entered the showroom to check it first person I had a feeling I could not quite describe which told me it's not so ideal for me as I imagined. Also, the seller was not the friendliest. I am now considering that if I sell my honda the guzzi v85tt travel is my first option, but that could change. As I see it, and some reviews commented, the sporty orientation and not so great wind protection make this BMW a not so great option for long trips, I've also seen that they recommend the 850GS in front of the 900XR if you plan to ride longer. What's your opinion on that? did you do any long trips on it or on the honda? have you tried the headlight with turn assistant at night? that sounded extremelly interesting to me to have as an add-on to a motorcycle. It sounds like you preferred the more street oriented design. Since you had the CB500X, did you consider the F 750 GS at any point when purchasing the F900? Just curious since I'm close to deciding on the 750 GS, but the reality is any offroad would likely be limited to dirt or gravel roads. I have no desire for true enduro type offroad riding. Now the F900 will be available here soon, I'm back to being a bit undecided.
I must admit that, while I noticed the little GSs in the showroom, I didn't really look too closely at them, because I don't really need their off road capabilities and I was looking for something more powerful.

Thanks for the video, it was very informative about the bike as usual BUT...is there any chance where you can re-do the same video and talk us through some of those roads and the scenic views (name the areas or the specific beaches you’ve stopped at) with the engine/road/wind noise in the background? The final scene with the bike set against the sea as the waves came crashing in would’ve been epic to hear! Some of your followers are stuck in the U.K. and our weather is usually shocking, so some form of escapism and enjoying the scenery and sounds as you whizz through your neighbourhood would go down extremely well! Keep up the good work 👍
Haha, yes I am very lucky to live where I do. To be honest, I haven't really found a good way to record the sound of the engine, or the sea, but I'm working on it. I grew up in Hull, so I know how desperate you are for a bit of sun by the time spring comes around. And this year the virus has ruined everything!!
@@RocketMan_Moto Could you use a second smaller camera facing you (attached to a mirror, with a microphone running near the exhaust), which can be used to record sound? I mounted my GoPro to the front fairing of my Africa Twin and ran the purple panda microphone all the way along the bike, to the inside of the fairing under the seat - the sound was good, but sadly the video was a bit dull because it recorded the view ahead of the bike.
Like Hendro, I really enjoy both the way you talk and the way you feed through your feelings about the riding and the specs of the bikes. I also own a 2020 CB500X since mid-February as I have just passed my driving licence and made the choice of reason with this bike. It’s true however that for commuting it’s perfect but I am afraid it will lack soon extra horse power as I already feel that from 90km/h onwards on the highway I may get frustrated 😕 anyway it’s always a pleasure to hear your saying instead of the BBC (which I like by the way)... ready to watch your next video

I'd certainly go for the F900XR over the CB500X, but if I wanted another big bike in Lagos, I'd go for a Ducati Scrambler 1100. What make is the handlebar bag, please? Interesting video.
i own a kawa Z900, and did a test drive to the Xr, and loved the bike. altough the power is not comparable since the z900 is more powerfull, I felt it was a great bike with a lot of capabilities and very good looking.
I haven't tried the Z900, but I can well believe what you say about the engine. It's not the XR's strong point. However, it's just right for me. I can apply full throttle without scaring myself to death, unlike my Street Triple, which I find just a little bit mental for my advancing years :D
Ride safe and enjoy your bike. I understand about 500cc. Freeway speed is 70mph in USA. Honda 500cc engine vibrates cause it's stressing at those speeds. It's not good for the bike to be redlining for long either. Thats why its best to have 650cc or higher on highways. Your engines wont be stressed out and you still have power to spare.

I'm in the same boat with my 2014 CB500X. Its time for a change. Here in Canada the Tracer 900GT appears the way to go. If i need to rationalize the trade-up, the hp it offers is probably the biggest factor. Passing high speed tractor trailer rigs on a busy highway is no joke on a 500X.
Interesting, let us know how you get on. I've just ordered a CB500X but I haven't ridden for 19 years so I talked myself down from a 900GT (via the 700). I'm pretty sure I've made the right choice for now, but can see me being in the same position in a year or so, assuming I catch the bug again..
Nick Whymark, same with me Nick. Hadn’t rode in a few years and wanted to get back into it. The CB500 was a perfect bike for that. Good size. Sporty looking. Not too much power but enough to still have some fun. But after 3 years it’s time to move up. Love my CB though. I changed the wind shield (too loud) and the seat (needed more cushion). Also added a tail tidy just for looks.
@@nickwhymark Hi Nick, I sold my 17 year old Hayabusa last year and bought a cb500x and love this machine!. It's definitely not boring nor under powered provided you aren't buying it to drone down a boring highway at 75mph on long trips. Your satisfaction of any bike hinges on what type of riding environment/environments you will subject it to. The 500x handles many riding environments remarkably well. It's greatest strengths are versatility, comfort and user-friendly. BTW my busa and my big Bandits are boring on the highway...highways are best done in a car...lol.
Thanks for the good review. As a minor hint: The criticised vibrations are caused by the minimal mass balancing of the engine of the CB500X. The engine has one single balance shaft only. There is not much you can do to reduce the vibrations. In comparision to some other bikes: The Suzuki GSX-8S has, as an example, two balance shafts. This reduces the vibrations on one side but increases the production costs on the other side. Antworten
My green Kawasaki Versys 650 was at the dealership for long time due to lock down, I borrowed my brother's GS 1200.... my wife didn't notice the difference!!! this could be a sign!

Thanks, Jeremy. In a nutshell, the ST RS is thrilling but exhausting, the BMW is all you really need. It scores 8/10 for everything, whereas the ST is 2/10 for certain things (riding position, diminutive size...) and 9/10 for others (acceleration, looks...). I suppose I could best sum it up by saying that I can't 'be bothered' to ride my Triumph much since I got the BMW, it just requires too much effort. Hope this helps :)

You are just fan...tastic. I have to say I bought the 2018 cb after test riding the 2019 model. Mine has vibrations after 90 mph, but only on the right foot pegs. Great video by the way, found it relaxing.
@@42much1 on my bike I used handle bar wraps for bycicles, and on the foot pegs I added rubberized return springs and so far it taken away 90% the vibes. I truly believe every bike is slightly different.

Ahh yes, after owning a 2022 cb500x, the vibration does start to itch after 7000rpm but anything below it is caused by bark busters or other end bars... the honda factory endbars are good, long and weighty. I get some foot peg buzz over 7k too but the reality is anything over 150kph is illegal in most countries and with bigger front visors or baggage gear is generally "rated" for 130kph max so add a little traffic and its been a excellent commuter and city to city motorbike. Think of the vibration as a tuning fork... you need to absorb the vibration at the tip of the tuning fork and bark buster ends drop the well designed tuning fork absorption bar ends. Posted way after your posted video as I too found vibration aggressive after fitting heated grips, turned out I didn't trim the grips enough during first fitting lowing the RPM vibration felt after factory fitted grips were removed so due to my error they absorbed the end bar vibrations instead of the bar ends doing their job. Once trimmed correctly leaving 5mm gap, you can feel the end bars doing there job while hand rests are calm (ie ride, finger touch bar ends to notice the difference in vibration on bar ends compared to hand grips) . If you are pulling 7K+ on this engine, your definitely beyond the speed zones or racing it of the stop. Gears are short, it goes like the clappers for its cc size due to the short gearing... so its a city focused bike, does inter city travel and very comfy in the saddle 2+ hours (ie I travel 5 hours at times, 3 hours in I can re position or stand for a few min to stretch) and the gas mileage benefits will show its not superbike fast, but again, its dealing traffic your neighbour's 997 ducati cannot (which cannot have its throttle rolled on while moving between traffic unless you love risking your precious pearl red paint in exchange for rear car parts!)... balance this bike is - said green monster from star wars, its moving you from A-Z with a smile and nothing in between you and the tarmac destination with a large tank for its consumption usage, 6 fuel bars, its about 90KM per bar! If you want to race, go on a track day and rent a cool bike thats great, but for living daily, getting bread and milk, doing paid jobs ie IT, consulting or courier service, visiting family in another city, this is straight down the middle a decent bike to use. I looked at bark busters but in reality these were not needed as I was not off-road fighting green bush and branches (that hurts without protection - barkbusters for a reason)... just tarmac smashing km's every day.. Love your reviews RocketMan Hope someone see value in this review of the cb500x there will never be a more balanced purposeful bike saving you money... plenty of other bikes do have fun but this is just down the middle ok and thats needed in a urban environment.
Thanks for your feedback. Vibration was definitely one of my main problems with the 500X, which otherwise is a very good 'little' bike. I definitely need to research the grips question, because I don't want to have vibration on the Transalp.
Looks like a very nice bike on the spec sheet and probly beats the CB500X on touring ability. But that XR decal is awful and makes the bike look like something out of the 90s! Love your videos and you're shopping for all the same bikes that interest me here in Canada. Keep it up!

Between CB and F900, you had the Honda NC 750X, did you contemplate that option? I had the NC for 8000 € the torque is tremendous and cruiser of 130 km/h at 3600 rpm with consumptions of 3,5 L/100 km. Just and intermediate option that for me is working. Good luck!!

Hi there! Have you ever compared the CB 500 X with the BMW F750GS sport/premium versions?... I think they are quite similar in ergonomics and weight, and the difference in price is not so big where I live ( at least for the sport version). Any thoughts? I would appreciate a lot! Thanks !
I haven't to be honest, probably because after the CB500X I really wanted a significant increase in power. Consequently, I didn't really look at bikes of less than 900/1000cc and 100hp. Ride safe :)
It's "socially irresponsible" to ride while we are dealing with COVID-19? I'm following every precaution, including working from home and social distancing. But give up riding when I'm not coming in contact with any other person while riding my bike is not something I will be doing. I get if I was commuting or planning on stoping where I would be in contact with others. But I don't see the problem if I'm just going for a mental health ride and coming straight home. I'm even set up with gas for several months as I stockpile ethanol gas in my garage since my state does not sell ethanol free gas.
@@Pepo-1969 In Australia our hospitals are largely empty and people dying because they're scared to 'go' to hospital. Not to mention the extra pain people are experiencing because of delayed elective surgery. You obviously care mate and that's great but the propaganda just isn't panning out I'm afraid
Boring is a good description of the x. But if boring means starts every time, never breaks down, take it almost anywhere, cheap rego, insurance and servicing, and outstanding economy, I’ll take boring every day (and I have).
Interesting take on utility.... I'm pretty fond of it with motorcycling, as I have several other expensive hobbies. My ideal garage would cure insomnia.... actually still looking for a clean CBF1000 as a mile muncher..... that's my sort of level. But always interesting to see these reviews like the XR... not my thing but I know why.

I currently own a Street Triple RS. I bought it 3 years ago when it first came out and I've thoroughly loved it. My main complaint is during multi-day tours where the STRS gets vibey and just plain hurts to ride. I've been thinking about both of these bikes as an alternative for longer trips and it sounds like the BMW is well suited for this kind of riding. I know it's an odd comparison, but would love a BMW vs STRS video considering both are these "all arounders". I always worry that after riding hours on the freeway to finally get to a nice road, I won't enjoy those twisties as much on the BMW as I do on my STRS. What are your thoughts on that? I do want heated grips and cruise control on my next bike considering I live in Seattle, where it gets cold and we usually have big highway miles to get to nice roads.

The seat is an odd experience: sitting on the bike in the showroom, you think it's as hard as a block of wood, but when you actually start riding, it gets a lot better. That said, I am still thinking of investing in the comfort seat.

The CB500 is good bike for the money. For a first bike and a commuter its ideal. But as you said," a bit boring and after six months of ownership a new rider would want more". I have owned many bikes because I get bored and want to try another one, motorcyclists always talk about the bike they don't don't own.
Interesting as ever. Think maybe you answered the question at the end - no the XR does not really justify twice the price, but then bike justification is more an art than a science and comes mostly down to affordability. I'm now curious of your bike stable - the street triple and the XR are both really 'short blast' bikes - I have the CB500X and a Speedmaster which offer chalk and cheese experiences - with the Triumph offering range and comfort. Reviews of the F900R have also been good, so plenty to think about for the future. Lovely scenery.

I hated the feel of the XR engine. The ergos were really good though. The flip up screen was great. Putting it on the side stand made me realize how top heavy it is.

The Blaze panniers fit fine if you fit the velcro belt over the seat as SW-Motech insist you should (not just for exhaust clearance but for correct weight carrying). My rh Blaze pannier clears the exhaust by 5 cm. I have a sheepskin pad for a pillion to use on those rare occasions when needed. Have to say that I am very pleased with my 2019 CB500X and my SW-Motech Blaze panniers. I agree that X wins in terms of value for money and it does most things well. The only thing that I would mark against it would be if it was used often for high speed touring (over 120km/h), but thats not what people buy the X for.
I'm sure you're right: if I'd fitted the panniers as per the instructions, I would probably have had better clearance. I see they now also offer a 'high version' of the bags, presumably to give better clearance.
All a matter of perspective. I wouldn’t under normal circumstances change my VFR 750, which I’ve owned for 11 years, for anything. It does everything for me. I will have to look for something more comfortable however, as I’ve developed hip arthritis and the seating position of the VFR is causing me pain. A good motorbike does not have to cost the earth. There are plenty clean 90’s or noughties examples.
I have always wanted a BMW Motorcycle. One of these days I plan on buying one. Probably an RT. I am a little challenged in the inseam area so I have to keep that in mind as well. A bike has to fit me first. Has anyone ever told you how lucky you are to live in Portugal? It reminds me a lot of California. Spain and Portugal are on my bucket list. I loved the show today. I agree that your reviews are really good. I do have a question about your temporary decision to get a R3. My brother has the previous generation R3T, and it's a nice motorcycle. Way too big IMHO, but a stonking motor, that always puts a grin on my face when he let's me ride it. My question is why you chose to go from a 500cc Honda to a 2300cc Triumph? I do how ever agree with your decision to get the F900XR. I currently ride a R1200S, and I'm torn between the new middleweight BMW and a Multistrada 950S

Male motorcyclists feel the need to rationalize their decisions to buy new bikes. But at the end of the day they just damned well want that new bike! No matter how good the bike you have, the "new girl" in the shop window will look better. And your mind will be consumed by her until you get her. There is, literally, no end to it. Still, its fun to see the comparisons made. Keep it up mate. Right now we need all this kind of entertainment we can get.

After a driveshaft failure on my BMW R1150GS I bought a 2019 CB500X. The intention was to sell the BMW, but for the same reasons you upgraded (long distance touring) my BMW has a permanent home. The CB500X meets and exceeds all local duties so it is my great fortune to be able keep both. You made the right decision for your circumstances.

Just want to say, for the sake of anybody wanting a 500x, though your review is honest and informative, for anyone who is 75kg or less, the suspension both on and off road is quite reasonable and power to weight is good if you have 110klh limits such as Australian roads, and though I have riden more exciting machines, the 500 will be always my all round love. I'm a BMW 1200 GSA driver and i don't need all those bells and whistles and i rarely change the settings but it's so cool and comfortable that i started to love it .
After 3 years i love my BMW als i love my wife and that's why i'm often alone on the road with my BMW 1200 GSA.

One of the best reviewers I've ever come across on UA-cam. You've helped me decide to hang onto my F650GS for at least another year rather than go for the 500X. I'm hoping that Honda will introduce a CB650X that will introduce a little more power when you need it and eliminate the vibration issue. I like long rides, and I tend to cruise at right around the vibration speed, so the Honda will have to wait.

I had a ride planned for early May, from my home in Sydney to see an old friend on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland; a mouthwatering round trip of around 2200 klms. I own a 2003 Harley Davidson Softail Duece 100th anniversary with 14/150 paint scheme , I have been wanting a on/ off road touring bike and have been taking my time in choosing one however the BMW stands way out as the best so far . The lack of power and torque of some bikes like the Honda 500 would not work for me as I’m 200lbs and need the confidence of reserve power for passing , dodging idiots etc. I’m glad to see you chose the better built and quality of the BMW , I feel a BMW is in my near future 🤩🇺🇸

Thanks for the vid, enjoy your vids. When i moved to Thailand a few years ago i tested numerous bikes and the CB500X was one of them. Hired the X for a few days and went riding in the northern mountains and the bike was definitely under powered in the mountains IMO and that ruled the bike out for me as well as the vibrations. I ride similar to you as in don't like being in the upper rev range. Just love the pull of the Triumph big twins where you don't need the tacho bouncing off the rev limiter to get good usable power. Another reason i am interested in the 900XR.
An observation, not a criticism, about when you put the HP and TQ figures up it may have been beneficial to put up the bike weights as i also have a 765RS and the low weight of the bike plus plenty of HP seems that the torque is adequate for that bike. Plenty in the mid range of the tacho for me anyway.
I'm interested in having a look at the 900s in the flesh, R and XR but have no idea if or when they will get to Thailand. Maybe after Kung Flu is sorted?
The F900 is definitely worth a look, certainly I'm very satisfied with the move. The CB was a great bike, but underpowered and buzzy

I rode my 500x on one of the twistiest UK roads with glorious scenery between Masham and Richmond. The bike just flicked in and out of the corners, just moving up and down the mid gears kept the bike in the torque curve and overtaking was fairly easy when necessary. I felt really connected to the bike and the ride was shear bliss for mile after mile. The simplicity of the bike added not subtracted from the experience. For the money it is probably the best value bike out there and I will be getting the 2022 version next spring (if the UK supply chain hasn't collapsed meantime). I am sure the BMW is a great bike but the extra money, less MPG, more costly servicing isn't worth it for me.
I agree! I sold the BMW after a few months, because it turned out to be a massive disappointment. I do miss my 500X and am looking forward to trying the new 2022 model. Ride safe :)

Thanks for your interesting comparison video. I can only compare a 2018 1200 RT with my new F900 XR and they are somewhat like chalk and cheese. The 900XR is certainly lighter (perhaps by about 60 kg so actually more bhp/tonne), tips beautifully into bends but has a pesky chain that needs cleaning/lubrication periodically.
Just at the first 600 mile service point now and I'm lovin' it as they say in McDonald's with the only real niggles being:
1) Mudguards are so absurdly short that the brown stuff is thrown up into various nooks and crannies
2) A rather wooden feeling rear brake (fronts are excellent)
3) Chain has required retensioning rather earlier than expected and
4) Somewhat too short a side-stand giving the bike giving an alarming lean when parked on level ground. Note something like the Hornig
side-stand enlarger elegantly corrects the height and gives more confidence on soft ground.
Oh and if you use a pressure wash on the swing arm area it peels off the luggage weight limit and chain adjustment glued-on labels.
Apart from that, yes, it gets the pulse racing.
I'm seeing plenty of bikes naturally self-isolating on the road today clearly taking more notice of Chief Medical Officer's encouragement to get out in the countryside than from anxious tut tutting neighbours and pedestrians looking for the next toilet roll.

I owned two bikes for some time.
It was great, but finally I decided to own only one and it feels even better, because I now only ride the more luxurious one.
On the other hand I often remember good times with the old one!

Glad you saw fit to describe the seat as a church pew! I've ordered an XR Tour, hopefully it will be here by February. I test rode a demo and commented on the absolute plank of a seat. "Oh," said the salesperson, "you can get a BMW comfort seat for (wait for it) about $800." (Australian) I expressed my dismay at this incredible rip off, and to be fair, he offered to find one "at cost" - still about $600. Think I will use my airhawk while I source a less ridiculously priced option.
Ive been riding for may years and am now at the point of buying my last bike before I hang up my boots, the CB500X was on my radar, that is until I saw your review, then I saw another review on the Yamaha Tracer, another bike I was thinking of, I do very much enjoy your open and honest reviews ( unlike Triumph of late). Ive looked at Binelli and scooters ( Got a Forza for fun), finally having BMW in my sights, therefore this review was right on target.

I have a Harley and a Moto Guzzi, always like a lil something different, which my 2 now are, like ppl to see something out of the norm, rare to have when out on the road. I too had a Triumph Street Triple, nice bike, but here in Florida of the USA, it’s a long hot humid summertime for 8months/yr, so really my demographics have taken the fun out of riding the motorcycles, so the newer Triumph was sold. But with all that said, I still look and see, maybe I’ll pull the trigger for another garage queen, 😂 IDK, time will tell, I do like the CMM, and the Norton models coming out soon, sure wish I could get them over here 👈

Strange when I first saw this I thought oh Yam MT07/MT09 with a bigger silencer ,was a surprise to find its a Bemmer ,looks like a bigger version of the Honda CB500x as well in this colour scheme . Will check out your later views to see what its actually like as a riders bike !
The CB500X suited me better than the F900XR
I wanted to try the 2019 Honda CB500X, but no one in my area had one in stock. So I ended up with a new 2018 Kawi Versys 650. Very happy, and it is SO smooth....vibrations are so minimal. And it has more power than I need, so I think I ended up with the right bike. You're not the only one to say the CB500X has some vibrations at higher rpm.

How about fuel economy? How do the two compare? My CB500X seems to give a ot of miles per gallon, often between 80 to 100 mpg.
You're right - an oversight on my part, I should have mentioned that. I would average about 3.3 litres per 100km on my CB500X, which was astonishingly good. I'm only seeing 4.7 on the BMW, so more or less 50% worse. Oh well, the Triumph Rocket would have been worse still! Ride safe :)
RocketMan - yes I’m still astonished with my CB500X fuel economy. Maybe because it is a cheaper bike I feel more carefree about it. Mind you it is my second bike. I use a T120 for longer trips with pillion. By the way, I tried the new Tiger 900 GT Pro, both with and without a pillion. I think it’s a mixed bag. Certainly powerful with more bells and whistles, a very safe bike I think; but my partner did not enjoy being a pillion on it, especially without a top box. I don’t think it will replace my CBX or Bonnie.
@@RocketMan_Moto That's amazing! I have a cb500x of 2015 (euro3 normative) and I've never managed less than 3,5 or so, and lately i use to get 4 or 3,9 all the time. I admit I am not the slowest driver out there though...
I once tried one of the newer versions with the less pollutant engine and I felt that the later Cb500x's are worse in mid-rev than the older ones and a mechanic told me it¡s because of the anti-pollution normative of 2016. I also do not feel the vibration you talked about. THe BMW is instead built from scratch to newer standards and doesn't need to adapt any older engine. PErhaps this is an advantatge.
BTW I really liked this because I also fell in love at first sight with the BMW900XR (as most of the riders I know) and considered it, but when I entered the showroom to check it first person I had a feeling I could not quite describe which told me it's not so ideal for me as I imagined. Also, the seller was not the friendliest. I am now considering that if I sell my honda the guzzi v85tt travel is my first option, but that could change. As I see it, and some reviews commented, the sporty orientation and not so great wind protection make this BMW a not so great option for long trips, I've also seen that they recommend the 850GS in front of the 900XR if you plan to ride longer. What's your opinion on that? did you do any long trips on it or on the honda?
have you tried the headlight with turn assistant at night? that sounded extremelly interesting to me to have as an add-on to a motorcycle.

It sounds like you preferred the more street oriented design. Since you had the CB500X, did you consider the F 750 GS at any point when purchasing the F900? Just curious since I'm close to deciding on the 750 GS, but the reality is any offroad would likely be limited to dirt or gravel roads. I have no desire for true enduro type offroad riding. Now the F900 will be available here soon, I'm back to being a bit undecided.
I must admit that, while I noticed the little GSs in the showroom, I didn't really look too closely at them, because I don't really need their off road capabilities and I was looking for something more powerful.

Haha, yes I am very lucky to live where I do. To be honest, I haven't really found a good way to record the sound of the engine, or the sea, but I'm working on it. I grew up in Hull, so I know how desperate you are for a bit of sun by the time spring comes around. And this year the virus has ruined everything!!
@@RocketMan_Moto Could you use a second smaller camera facing you (attached to a mirror, with a microphone running near the exhaust), which can be used to record sound?
I mounted my GoPro to the front fairing of my Africa Twin and ran the purple panda microphone all the way along the bike, to the inside of the fairing under the seat - the sound was good, but sadly the video was a bit dull because it recorded the view ahead of the bike.
Like Hendro, I really enjoy both the way you talk and the way you feed through your feelings about the riding and the specs of the bikes. I also own a 2020 CB500X since mid-February as I have just passed my driving licence and made the choice of reason with this bike. It’s true however that for commuting it’s perfect but I am afraid it will lack soon extra horse power as I already feel that from 90km/h onwards on the highway I may get frustrated 😕 anyway it’s always a pleasure to hear your saying instead of the BBC (which I like by the way)... ready to watch your next video

I'd certainly go for the F900XR over the CB500X, but if I wanted another big bike in Lagos, I'd go for a Ducati Scrambler 1100.

i own a kawa Z900, and did a test drive to the Xr, and loved the bike. altough the power is not comparable since the z900 is more powerfull, I felt it was a great bike with a lot of capabilities and very good looking.
I haven't tried the Z900, but I can well believe what you say about the engine. It's not the XR's strong point. However, it's just right for me. I can apply full throttle without scaring myself to death, unlike my Street Triple, which I find just a little bit mental for my advancing years :D

Ride safe and enjoy your bike. I understand about 500cc. Freeway speed is 70mph in USA. Honda 500cc engine vibrates cause it's stressing at those speeds. It's not good for the bike to be redlining for long either. Thats why its best to have 650cc or higher on highways. Your engines wont be stressed out and you still have power to spare.

I'm in the same boat with my 2014 CB500X. Its time for a change. Here in Canada the Tracer 900GT appears the way to go. If i need to rationalize the trade-up, the hp it offers is probably the biggest factor. Passing high speed tractor trailer rigs on a busy highway is no joke on a 500X.
Interesting, let us know how you get on. I've just ordered a CB500X but I haven't ridden for 19 years so I talked myself down from a 900GT (via the 700). I'm pretty sure I've made the right choice for now, but can see me being in the same position in a year or so, assuming I catch the bug again..
Nick Whymark, same with me Nick. Hadn’t rode in a few years and wanted to get back into it. The CB500 was a perfect bike for that. Good size. Sporty looking. Not too much power but enough to still have some fun. But after 3 years it’s time to move up. Love my CB though. I changed the wind shield (too loud) and the seat (needed more cushion). Also added a tail tidy just for looks.
@@nickwhymark Hi Nick, I sold my 17 year old Hayabusa last year and bought a cb500x and love this machine!. It's definitely not boring nor under powered provided you aren't buying it to drone down a boring highway at 75mph on long trips. Your satisfaction of any bike hinges on what type of riding environment/environments you will subject it to. The 500x handles many riding environments remarkably well. It's greatest strengths are versatility, comfort and user-friendly. BTW my busa and my big Bandits are boring on the highway...highways are best done in a car...lol.

As a minor hint: The criticised vibrations are caused by the minimal mass balancing of the engine of the CB500X. The engine has one single balance shaft only. There is not much you can do to reduce the vibrations.
In comparision to some other bikes: The Suzuki GSX-8S has, as an example, two balance shafts. This reduces the vibrations on one side but increases the production costs on the other side.

Thanks, Jeremy. In a nutshell, the ST RS is thrilling but exhausting, the BMW is all you really need. It scores 8/10 for everything, whereas the ST is 2/10 for certain things (riding position, diminutive size...) and 9/10 for others (acceleration, looks...). I suppose I could best sum it up by saying that I can't 'be bothered' to ride my Triumph much since I got the BMW, it just requires too much effort. Hope this helps :)

You are just fan...tastic. I have to say I bought the 2018 cb after test riding the 2019 model. Mine has vibrations after 90 mph, but only on the right foot pegs. Great video by the way, found it relaxing.

@@42much1 on my bike I used handle bar wraps for bycicles, and on the foot pegs I added rubberized return springs and so far it taken away 90% the vibes. I truly believe every bike is slightly different.

Ahh yes, after owning a 2022 cb500x, the vibration does start to itch after 7000rpm but anything below it is caused by bark busters or other end bars... the honda factory endbars are good, long and weighty. I get some foot peg buzz over 7k too but the reality is anything over 150kph is illegal in most countries and with bigger front visors or baggage gear is generally "rated" for 130kph max so add a little traffic and its been a excellent commuter and city to city motorbike. Think of the vibration as a tuning fork... you need to absorb the vibration at the tip of the tuning fork and bark buster ends drop the well designed tuning fork absorption bar ends.
Posted way after your posted video as I too found vibration aggressive after fitting heated grips, turned out I didn't trim the grips enough during first fitting lowing the RPM vibration felt after factory fitted grips were removed so due to my error they absorbed the end bar vibrations instead of the bar ends doing their job. Once trimmed correctly leaving 5mm gap, you can feel the end bars doing there job while hand rests are calm (ie ride, finger touch bar ends to notice the difference in vibration on bar ends compared to hand grips) . If you are pulling 7K+ on this engine, your definitely beyond the speed zones or racing it of the stop.
Gears are short, it goes like the clappers for its cc size due to the short gearing... so its a city focused bike, does inter city travel and very comfy in the saddle 2+ hours (ie I travel 5 hours at times, 3 hours in I can re position or stand for a few min to stretch) and the gas mileage benefits will show its not superbike fast, but again, its dealing traffic your neighbour's 997 ducati cannot (which cannot have its throttle rolled on while moving between traffic unless you love risking your precious pearl red paint in exchange for rear car parts!)... balance this bike is - said green monster from star wars, its moving you from A-Z with a smile and nothing in between you and the tarmac destination with a large tank for its consumption usage, 6 fuel bars, its about 90KM per bar!
If you want to race, go on a track day and rent a cool bike thats great, but for living daily, getting bread and milk, doing paid jobs ie IT, consulting or courier service, visiting family in another city, this is straight down the middle a decent bike to use.
I looked at bark busters but in reality these were not needed as I was not off-road fighting green bush and branches (that hurts without protection - barkbusters for a reason)... just tarmac smashing km's every day..

Hope someone see value in this review of the cb500x there will never be a more balanced purposeful bike saving you money... plenty of other bikes do have fun but this is just down the middle ok and thats needed in a urban environment.
Thanks for your feedback. Vibration was definitely one of my main problems with the 500X, which otherwise is a very good 'little' bike. I definitely need to research the grips question, because I don't want to have vibration on the Transalp.
Looks like a very nice bike on the spec sheet and probly beats the CB500X on touring ability. But that XR decal is awful and makes the bike look like something out of the 90s! Love your videos and you're shopping for all the same bikes that interest me here in Canada. Keep it up!

Between CB and F900, you had the Honda NC 750X, did you contemplate that option?
I had the NC for 8000 € the torque is tremendous and cruiser of 130 km/h at 3600 rpm with consumptions of 3,5 L/100 km.

I have a f800f, I am thinking if to go up to the s1000xr or the f900xr. I need some commuter comfort, and the 900 seems a logical upgrade.

Hi there! Have you ever compared the CB 500 X with the BMW F750GS sport/premium versions?... I think they are quite similar in ergonomics and weight, and the difference in price is not so big where I live ( at least for the sport version). Any thoughts? I would appreciate a lot!

I haven't to be honest, probably because after the CB500X I really wanted a significant increase in power. Consequently, I didn't really look at bikes of less than 900/1000cc and 100hp. Ride safe :)
It's "socially irresponsible" to ride while we are dealing with COVID-19? I'm following every precaution, including working from home and social distancing. But give up riding when I'm not coming in contact with any other person while riding my bike is not something I will be doing.
I get if I was commuting or planning on stoping where I would be in contact with others. But I don't see the problem if I'm just going for a mental health ride and coming straight home. I'm even set up with gas for several months as I stockpile ethanol gas in my garage since my state does not sell ethanol free gas.

Boring is a good description of the x. But if boring means starts every time, never breaks down, take it almost anywhere, cheap rego, insurance and servicing, and outstanding economy, I’ll take boring every day (and I have).

Interesting take on utility.... I'm pretty fond of it with motorcycling, as I have several other expensive hobbies. My ideal garage would cure insomnia.... actually still looking for a clean CBF1000 as a mile muncher..... that's my sort of level. I currently own a Street Triple RS. I bought it 3 years ago when it first came out and I've thoroughly loved it. My main complaint is during multi-day tours where the STRS gets vibey and just plain hurts to ride. I've been thinking about both of these bikes as an alternative for longer trips and it sounds like the BMW is well suited for this kind of riding. I know it's an odd comparison, but would love a BMW vs STRS video considering both are these "all arounders". I always worry that after riding hours on the freeway to finally get to a nice road, I won't enjoy those twisties as much on the BMW as I do on my STRS. What are your thoughts on that? I do want heated grips and cruise control on my next bike considering I live in Seattle, where it gets cold and we usually have big highway miles to get to nice roads.

Excellent video man! i own a F700 GS and a R1200 GS, tried for a few days the XR but disliked the seat, very uncomfortable for me, drive safe.
The seat is an odd experience: sitting on the bike in the showroom, you think it's as hard as a block of wood, but when you actually start riding, it gets a lot better. That said, I am still thinking of investing in the comfort seat.

I thought I would, but BMW have set the front forks up very well and IMHO they don't really need any adjustment.
Is the wind buffeting to the head less on the F900XR than the CB500X?
The CB500 is good bike for the money. For a first bike and a commuter its ideal. But as you said," a bit boring and after six months of ownership a new rider would want more". I have owned many bikes because I get bored and want to try another one, motorcyclists always talk about the bike they don't don't own.

Interesting as ever. Think maybe you answered the question at the end - no the XR does not really justify twice the price, but then bike justification is more an art than a science and comes mostly down to affordability. I'm now curious of your bike stable - the street triple and the XR are both really 'short blast' bikes - I have the CB500X and a Speedmaster which offer chalk and cheese experiences - with the Triumph offering range and comfort. Reviews of the F900R have also been good, so plenty to think about for the future. Lovely scenery.

I hated the feel of the XR engine. The ergos were really good though. The flip up screen was great. Putting it on the side stand made me realize how top heavy it is.
I think the top heavy feeling is because the side stand is too short and, as such, the bike leans over too much.

The Blaze panniers fit fine if you fit the velcro belt over the seat as SW-Motech insist you should (not just for exhaust clearance but for correct weight carrying). My rh Blaze pannier clears the exhaust by 5 cm. I have a sheepskin pad for a pillion to use on those rare occasions when needed.
Have to say that I am very pleased with my 2019 CB500X and my SW-Motech Blaze panniers. I agree that X wins in terms of value for money and it does most things well. The only thing that I would mark against it would be if it was used often for high speed touring (over 120km/h), but thats not what people buy the X for.
I'm sure you're right: if I'd fitted the panniers as per the instructions, I would probably have had better clearance. I see they now also offer a 'high version' of the bags, presumably to give better clearance.
I enjoyed your analysis very much. I am curious if the Honda NX750 ever crosses your screen?
All a matter of perspective. I wouldn’t under normal circumstances change my VFR 750, which I’ve owned for 11 years, for anything. It does everything for me. I will have to look for something more comfortable however, as I’ve developed hip arthritis and the seating position of the VFR is causing me pain.
A good motorbike does not have to cost the earth. There are plenty clean 90’s or noughties examples.

I have always wanted a BMW Motorcycle. One of these days I plan on buying one. Probably an RT. I am a little challenged in the inseam area so I have to keep that in mind as well. A bike has to fit me first. Has anyone ever told you how lucky you are to live in Portugal? It reminds me a lot of California. Spain and Portugal are on my bucket list. I loved the show today. I agree that your reviews are really good. I do have a question about your temporary decision to get a R3. My brother has the previous generation R3T, and it's a nice motorcycle. Way too big IMHO, but a stonking motor, that always puts a grin on my face when he let's me ride it. My question is why you chose to go from a 500cc Honda to a 2300cc Triumph? I do how ever agree with your decision to get the F900XR. I currently ride a R1200S, and I'm torn between the new middleweight BMW and a Multistrada 950S
