Shirley Fenette character deserved better. The way the writers handled her was awful. Here's how they ruined her character. Timestamps in the description.
Shirley definitely deserved better than what she was given. If she wasn’t gonna end up with Lelouch, at least give her and the rest of the Student Council something more to do. And I’ve actually come up with a third theory as to why Shirley’s arc falters; Code Geass’ changed time slots and how it affected season 2. For those not in the know, Code Geass’ second season was already being planned out, with the first episode of S2 already fully scripted, which would’ve picked up right where the cliffhanger left off. However, due to Code Geass’ popularity, the higher-ups decided to switch the time slot to one earlier in the day. This was likely to get more teens to watch it so they could get interested in buying more merch. This resulted in some of the discussion of in-universe politics and other heavier subject matter to not be brought up more, and a heavier focus on the mecha action. This also likely resulted in many of the original plans for plot lines and characters to be discarded or reworked for the new R2, like resetting the status quo to the school setting to possibly ease in new viewers. I have a feeling that whatever the original plans with Shirley and her slowly regaining her memories were, they had to be changed due to the new direction with R2, and it left the writers in a position of not knowing what to do with her. So, in the end, with Shirley’s subplot not fitting into the new plans they had to get to their ending (I recall Lelouch’s plan to become Emperor and a symbol of hatred for the world to unite against was always the planned ending in mind, just in a different way), they felt that she didn’t have a place in the story anymore and decided to end her story by making her into another tragic casualty Lelouch can be motivated by. Like you said, it’s a big waste of a potentially interesting character arc. Even if she was gonna die, her death could’ve at least been better executed (no pun intended). And after watching this video, I would certainly like to see a follow-up on how you’d fix Shirley’s arc in Code Geass.
I used to type Shirley as your run-of-the-mill anime schoolgirl crushing on the protagonist, but after years, I have such sympathy for her and her kind of characters. Just the innocent, good kind who simply yearns to be loved and isn't fortunate enough to be in the centre of the story, doesn't fit the mold of a hero or hero's emotional motivation, and ends up giving up her life for her love in a failed attempt to be significant to them and story-wise. So here's my completely headcanon theory, I think there was an early draft where the Student Council were going to be VERY important and involved, and my evidence is actually Rivalz. Rivalz clearly has underworld connections since he's in the gambling stuff with Lelouch, and when he thinks Lelouch is crushing on Kallen he knowns about her already, we also see him being a bartender of some kind, a job a kid his age shouldn't have and perfect to talk to shady people. Almost like he's some kind of info broker... But these things just kind of...vanish after a while. So my theory is that they were all meant to be way more important, but as the scripts kept changing and evolving, Rivalz, Milly, and Shirley got lost in the mix, keeping their old prominence, but losing the actual reason they used to be important. But Shirley gets it the worst regardless.
Keeping the highschool setting was a mistake. I think the student council be Suzaku's support staff with Shirley getting a view of both sides. She eventually realizes why Lelouch rebels and slips him info. Her death could still be tragic since Lelouch would think it's Suzaku but realizing it's not, tells Rolo to kill all his underlings, not realizing Shirley is apart of it. This way Shirley plays a real role and still dies a tragic death that's Lelouch's fault. I would love a video series on how you think Code Geass should have played out. I would have preferred the Black Rebellion be a success just for the story potential for Suzaku.
@@MyMediaChops It bothers me how prevalent high school is the setting in anime regardless of the genre. The best action series that start out with it typically drop it after the first story arc or push it to the side (Gundam Wing, YuYu Hakusho, Stardust Crusaders). The only action anime that keep it at the forefront and make the story work are rare ones like Revolutionary Girl Utena and My Hero Academia. It can be done but it does limit the story.
While i do agree that the reboot for R2 is a hard pill to swallow i gotta disagree with Shirley jumping out of the building being something out of left field, from her perspective up to that point reality is something that for her its falling apart In the spam of only a little more then a Year she lost her father, found out her crush was responsible for it, tried to come to terms with it, meet with Mao, got her memorry erased, found out the truth again and then lost her memorys again only to regain it again and having to process all that again You cant hardly blame her for trying to jump given she also tougth Suzaku was on it too, out running Lelouch is totally posible, Out running Suzaku is imposible, freaking dude can run on walls, at that point she was probably loosing her mind questioning everything she knew Now Suzaku being that retarded with her i agree totally, dude should have known better by that point

It would be tough for Lelouch since it would mean he'd have to open up and realize he can't just do things for Nunnally but for the big picture. If he had that perspective, Lelouch probably would have won the Black Rebellion.

while yes Shirly could have been better your point on suicide is flawed cause like you said she fell, and she realized that Suzaku and Lelouch took advantage of her and did not want their help it was high stress situation everything calms down it was more of lapse of judgement than anything did not show signs afterwards of tendencies and in regard to not directly killing her lelouch is not that heartless and cares for people to degree and he would not jump into killing especially a dear friend if there is another option. And it pushes him forward and cause events that brings out other characters. And I dont think her having a bigger role would have been more contrived due to the type of story code geass is there probably not anything beyond rivalz role for which probably would have been best. I believe not only shirly and her role is to allow the main character to show hes still a teenager among the chaos around him and show he values other things than his goal maybe not as much but its still worth something to him I the student council in general could have shown more deeply in relation to lelouch however they were still adequate just not perfect. Overall I think the writers had the right idea but it could have done better like them noting the stress around and being support but i guess that role was for C.C but the moments to have to establish what they are to the protagonist this problem is also with the Britania's knights. But overall, they were alot of characters they are not all are going to be great even the best have this issue so it does not really make me that angry.
I always assumed it was obvious given how orange her hair is when compared to Suzaku who has brown hair. Shirley also has light skin and green eyes which is common for redheads.

@@MyMediaChops certainly, for Terminator my idea would be that Lelouch teleports into the wasteland alone, no CC to save him, but with his Gease which he can use on humans but not on the machines even if they have human flesh, also even with his computer skills he can only hack the T 800 since Skynet and the other terminators have not been shone to be hackable. Even though most of your channel is Lelouch fanboys, you should not be afraid to have him be defeated in some sinarios. For Planet of the Apes, it should take place in the original movie with primitive humans and apes ruling over them, Lelouch is not allowed to bring guns or any other technology and his Gease cannot work on animals even if they are intelligent, he can control the humans and use them to overthrow the apes though. Just some of my suggestions, thanks.

For a character who was supposed to represent "normal life" she's the most misfortunate character in the show. She gets Geassed by almost all the character who have it in the show. And her mother, poor soul. First her husband, and then her daughter are killed in the span of a year. The only reason I like Shirley being alive in the recaps is so that poor women doesn't suffer anymore. I hated the whole "Shirley and Lelouch are ignoring each other because they had a lovers spat or something". Besides the Ragnarök Connection plotline, this might be the dumbest story in the show. That's because that would never work. Ignoring is one thing, but going along the whole "I don't know Lelouch" makes the Ashford Students look stupid. I understand what Lelouch was trying to do; however, erasing yourself from someone's life when everyone else knows that you two know each other is a terrible idea. I don't know why Milly went along with it, Suzaku questioned it a wanted to resolve it, and even Rivalz eventually got tired of all the BS. Hears a better idea Lelouch, instead of erasing years of memories you just make Shirley forget everything up till her fathers funeral or even a day or two before that. Since everything that contributed to Shirley's mental state started after her father's death, there is a almost guaranteed chance Lelouch would avoid every problem with Shirley and his identity. Then you gently reject Shirley's feelings to keep her safe. There was that so hard Lelouch? You know what's crazy, Lelouch does almost the exact same thing to Benio and other girl (forgot her name) in the Lancelot and Guren's manga. And that timeline follows the original story. Good job Lelouch its not like erasing someone's memories has caused problems for said victim. I know people defend Lelouch's use of Geass on Shirley, and a I get it, but it seems more like a get out of jail free card every time his identity or image is jeopardized. I love Lelouch, but its a little concerning to me that people make him out to be some kind of saint who can do no wrong. I read a fanfic and the writer made Lelouch kill babies and defended the act; meanwhile, Suzaku gets bashed for just breathing. Shirley suicide attempt reminds me when the Black Knights threaten to shoot Kallen at Turn 19. Similar to how Shirley's attempt is not acknowledged after, and Suzaku believes that Lelouch did it, the Black Knights threatening to kill Kallen is not brought up. Heck the next scene with Kallen is with Ohgi and the rest of Black Knights acting like the threat did not happened. This seems like poor writer, though the audience have opposite reactions to it. They don't see the Shirley trying to kill herself but agree that the Black Knights threatened (and would have killed) Kallen. Personally I think the writers never intended these two scenes to be about suicide or threats. This would somewhat work with Suzaku being that Lelouch caused Shirley's death (taken in what happened with Euphy), and Kallen not being pissed off her supposed friends for being willing to kill her. However, its important to make that clear to the audience so they don't interpret scenes the wrong way. Its sad that the Ressurection manga kept her death cannon, making her role in the recap movies useless/easily replaced. Shirley definitely deserved better.
I feel like the alternate universe had a better story as in writing but the main story had more context. In my opinion both could be cannon as in the recon stuff could be put in with what happened in the main timeline
So the problem with Shirley is that she is a stand in for the character of Ophelia in Hamlet (prob the most critical piece of literary inspiration for code geass). Of which the character Ophelia simply represents a love interest that Hamlet drives mad and to suicide. Like the rest of code geass they could have expanded the character to different heights, and they clearly tried that with R1, but werent able to take it far enough.
I see ur point to a degree but overall disagree. I also didn't like they kept her alive in the alt. universe, felt it served little to no purpose in the Re:surection movie
The re;surrection manga would support your claim since C.C. was able to recover his body without Shirley. That being said it was great that in the film verse that she got to do something
I don't think she was bad just her role in the story. If she didn't need to exist then the story should have killed her off early. The writers couldn't commit to what role they wanted for her.

They don't see the Shirley trying to kill herself but agree that the Black Knights threatened (and would have killed) Kallen. Personally I think the writers never intended these two scenes to be about suicide or threats. This would somewhat work with Suzaku being that Lelouch caused Shirley's death (taken in what happened with Euphy), and Kallen not being pissed off her supposed friends for being willing to kill her. However, its important to make that clear to the audience so they don't interpret scenes the wrong way.
Its sad that the Ressurection manga kept her death cannon, making her role in the recap movies useless/easily replaced. Shirley definitely deserved better.

I feel like the alternate universe had a better story as in writing but the main story had more context. In my opinion both could be cannon as in the recon stuff could be put in with what happened in the main timeline
So the problem with Shirley is that she is a stand in for the character of Ophelia in Hamlet (prob the most critical piece of literary inspiration for code geass). Of which the character Ophelia simply represents a love interest that Hamlet drives mad and to suicide. Like the rest of code geass they could have expanded the character to different heights, and they clearly tried that with R1, but werent able to take it far enough.

I see ur point to a degree but overall disagree. I also didn't like they kept her alive in the alt. universe, felt it served little to no purpose in the Re:surection movie
The re;surrection manga would support your claim since C.C. was able to recover his body without Shirley.
That being said it was great that in the film verse that she got to do something
I'm glad Shirley is alive thanks to the Trilogy movies and I don't care what people say about it.

Shirely got wasted because she didn't need to exist in the first place.
I don't think she was bad just her role in the story.
If she didn't need to exist then the story should have killed her off early.

She is just a girl who likes lelouch and her character just revolves around him.
If you will say she represents his school life then I would say his friend with blue hair could represents that or milly.
Even if we can say she is the representation of lelouch 's school life she is still not an interesting character to be a good representation.

She is just there for his harem because I don't see any reason why she should have that much focus other than that.
She is also there for fanservice and if you are going to tell me her death effects lelouch then it won't work because there are a million way for him to suffer without shirely dieing in a stupid way by a stupid character.
Lelouch himself is not well written anyway.

She was useless for original story so she always acted in fillers Seeing sly smart Cc and strong and motivated Euphy she seems really stupid fan girl So when she died I was happy 🥳😈for this I hate when someone want to be with Lelouch except Cc of course 😏
Part of why I like the movie continuity is that she's still alive. Part of why I hated R2 is because her death was just needlessly cruel.
