Well, what a beautiful install.
Massive kudos to you and installers, As an Auto Electrician myself i appreciate fine workmanship.
My only comment, with lithium batteries are that not many people are aware of there limitations in cold environments, I live in Tasmania and in winter we get temps below 0 degrees.
Charging lithium’s below 0 is not recommended, you can discharge but not charge lithium batteries at very cold temperatures.
Not that this is an issue in WA.
My only suggestion would be to add a temp sensor and charge cut out when ambient temps are below 3 degrees or so.
A minor issue but one I think people should at least be aware of.

as a tech that works on dc systems this vid did cover a lot in great detail. Good information. I especially like the design and application conversations that you added. Most ppl do not understand this. I am curious to see the data you can bring back from your next trip. If you can document loads (current draws, charge rates, device usage etc, it would be great info for a lot of ppl. As unless you go and do it, you never know what is really needed or used, from a practical sense. Doesn't matter if in the Vic high country in winter or in the open plains of inland Australia. thanks for sharing, I look forward to the following vids.
I recently had some work done on my 24v truck to tow my caravan and the majority of auto electricians i called had no idea how to wire up 24v systems, i was very surprised. This is definitely a specialised area and this company is what you're looking for 👍

Great video as usual Cam, just want to add (Sparky here working in heavy industry) that the main reason you don't see 48V in mobile machinery is safety. You start getting to shock territory around 50V and additionally needing heavier insulation characteristics on everything from cables to circuit breakers. As is mentioned, this is okay in stationary applications like an off grid home where safety can be planned into the design and things don't move and get wet etc. The one mobile applications we see high DC voltages is locomotives (aka haul trains) which are around 70V DC and it's probably the most dangerous part of the loco. I regularly work on 200+ meter marine vessels and even they still run 24V DC systems in the machinery spaces.

Great vid, build, explanation & info of how it is all interfaced & works. I built a 24v system into a 40’ bus I have up north nearly 2 yrs ago, 2.5kw PV, 2 x 200A 24v 5kwh lipo4 batteries & a 3kw inverter (Chinese AIO Cheapie) & it does all work well. The most power I have drawn overnight, I left the 2.5kw inverter split AC going and only used 110ah and the batteries were full before lunchtime.
24v system is definitely advantageous over 12v for a higher power build, & AC’s can use a lot of power, I have a cheapish 2.5kw reverse cycle split household system because the bus is stationary, and it works great, if I shut the room door at night, it will heat or cool the room within 10 minutes & cycle from a max of 1200W-1800W down to 100W-500W, considering an Aircon that uses a newer propane based gas refrigerant like R32 can also help with efficiency & battery power usage & can also heat a space more efficiently than many other methods. I8t is suggested the dometic rtx 2000 air-conditioner uses 15amp and as little as 8.33 on low.
Possibly perfect for anyone wanting to duplicate this power system and using a 24v rtx
Thanks for that comprehensive rundown Cam. Nice to see that things have progressed a lot since I installed my 600ah 12v lithium system. There was almost no off the shelf 12 volt systems back then and certainly no 24v suitable equipment or I would likely have gone that way myself.
I had to design and build my entire system from parts which were available for other uses, yes, including a fully functional BMS. There was no commercial avenue to get it done.
Our power uses are similar to yours, with air fryers, induction cookers, toasters, microwaves etc, but we do still run a 3 way fridge which isn't quite such an issue in NZ, Don't run an air con either.
Will be watching with interest how it all works for you, but should be good and you still have options with your multiple solar controllers, I can't understand why more people don't do that, I certainly did.

Its also worth considering upgrading the cars alternator as well, going to a 150-200a unit, which will comfortably cover both your canopy charger and the van. Safiery and rapid power make a 250a alternator which is almost a drop in replacement (bolt in other then upgrading the wiring to suit the increased current)
Yeah it’s definitely something I’ve considered. Probably just make the 130a MUX one work though.
Yep thought about that too… but watch out, cabling to the rear.. 50A Anderson plug and dcdc booster charger in the van goes for appr. 40amps max charging if necessary, double this for the canopy battery is max 80Amps plus starter batterie charging as priority charge…

Hey mate, great vid, did you talk to offroad living about networking the mppt chargers? We found multiple charging strings means the chargers fight eachother to establish the correct state of charge. Not a big issue but some efficiency lost from the solar with multiple mppt on same bank. Victron solve this with their 'smart' range i think. Safe travels! 🍻👍
Great explanation Cam. Did you see the Insta post the other day from Safiery showing how the Victron 48V inverter/Charger was less than half the price of the 12V version, $3080 versus $6577. I've got a 2000w inverter and needed to go to 0 guage cables after the cable supplied with it melted. If I was building it again I'd go 24v.
Nice setup. I’m sure that’s going to sustain you for days on end if you don’t run the AC. One of the lessons I learnt while going around Australia full time is there are a lot of factors influencing your power. Usage, weather and where you’re camped. We had a great spot at 80 mile beach but due to the trees we only got full sun from 11 to 4 and it was hot. The fridge was working. I had to break out the 200w solar blanket to get back up to 100% by 4pm.
Yeah you’re not wrong. It all works well until conditions are not favourable! That’s why I’m not so keen on induction cooking, space heating or water heating off batteries.
AC is just a luxury when conditions permit!

You mentioned the main change over switch would be changing. What would this be to and why
Hey Cam, you and I were messaging in your last video regarding my battery/solar setup.
You said you think you would get around 4hr of AC running in good clear conditions. You will get more than that as your Air con once it gets down to temp will start to power cycle and being an inverter Air con it can run at say 50% of max load.
As I stated in my last comment, with 1.1Kw of solar you should be comfortably getting 7-8hrs run time through the day leaving you still with up to 80% capacity..
This is all depending on what temps you set the Air con. If it's 35°C outside and you set inside to 16°C, it will never power cycle as it will never get to 16°C inside the van. Where as if you set it to a comfortable 26°C inside, it will get down to that temp and then start to cycle where you will actually recharge your battery.

I’m curious how the inverter handles the start up load of the aircon (looks to be the same a/c I have and it’s not an inverter unit, so start up current draw around 7kw - only very briefly though).

Hey cam plenty of info from your vid. I’m curious to know how much your compressor fridge actually draws. I ran one of a single 100amp AGM for years with no issues. It was a dometic and it drew max of 6 amps with a constant run of around 2amps. Also what was the ball park figure of your installation? Cheers mate keep the vids coming and safe travels.

Hi Cam looking for the stretch that you have for the double stretcher to fit the big stage thanks
Pretty sure the smaller solar panel will reduce the wattage of the larger one in series with it. In series you want the panels to put out the same current, in parallel you want the same voltage. But at least with the bigger panel you're making the most of your roof area and reducing the chances of panels being shaded out of action. Going two strings was a good idea but generally parallel connection would be the way to go. Very well spoken and very informative, well done.
Kevin, do you know if the overall charging performance might be affected if just one of the solar panels is substantially shaded when they are wired in series rather than in parallel?

After living with your 24v system for a while now is there anything you would change? Is battery capacity sufficient? We are about to upgrade our power system and toying with the 12v v 24 options. The Wangara guys have been very helpful so far.

Cheers Jake. Can’t speak for others, but I know I’m hesitant to talk about cost because I don’t want to give people unrealistic expectations. Every system should be tailored for each persons unique needs/budget- pricing will vary largely for that reason.
Offroad Living list all their prices for the components used on their website. But to give you a very rough idea my total build was 15k.
Hi Cam, I might have missed it but how are you charging this setup through the car? Same set up from the previous campers/caravans?
Is it 7 or 12 pin and are you still running an Anderson plug?
Great Vid mate. My only question is why the batteries are not installed under the seats over the axles? Not sure of your setup as there may have been other limitations that prevented this. For weight distribution purposes that would be great. For cable routing purposes it was a lot easier under the bed- which means less labour costs, less copper (cost and weight savings) and less voltage drop (more efficient).
What ampage 24 to 12v stepdown converter did you go with? Looks like Victron Orion? 24 volt looks like a great solution! I look forward to seeing how much you'll use the Air Conditioner and if you run it at night at all.

The main thing most dont understand is with 24v the losses ( which can approach 20%) are 1/4 on 24 volt systems, not half as you would think. Resistance losses in the battery, bms, fuses, shunt, cables, and inverter mosfets and inductor are calculated I2R ie losses are proportional to the square of the current, so half the current= 1/4 the losses. No-one knows this.

They’re tested to 2500-5000+ cycles. I should get the latter end because I’ll rarely discharge them deeply.
I’d realistically expect 10-15years.
I have no idea how long I’ll keep the van for, maybe 10 years?
First set of Allspark batteries I bought are still going strong after 6 years, but that’s absolutely to be expected.
Looks amazing but can you explain why would you sleep above this entire charging system. There is more evidence that the frequency waves are harming you. There must be more places to install it. I have had a look at a number caravans at this years caravan camping show in Brisbane and the number of manufacturers that are moving the inverter system away from under the bed.
24v for an inverter makes a lot of sense.
I might have missed it but how do you wire in and run your 12v appliances on a 24v system, (cig plugs, usb plugs, lights, etc..)?
It does!
Victron 24-12v converter between battery bank and factory fitted 12v fuse box/distribution panel. So all existing 12v gear functions as normal 👍🏼
I just don't understand the need to spend upwards of 10 plus grand to run an aircon for 4 to 6 hrs. I think I will stick with a generator to run my aircon for 6 to 8 hrs and not worry about depleting my battery source. I take 40 litres and that will last me a few weeks in the bush if I need to use my aircon. Will never use 10 plus grand of fuel in 2 of my lifetimes for a generator. I know generator use is not allowed in national parks but majority of campsites are shaded so therefore panels unable to charge the required amount needed to keep batteries at a healthy level if you choose to use your aircon or any other power hungry device.
Great vid though and very informative and can also vouch for allspark batteries and invertors, great products.

Cam when you select inverter power from your change over switch, does your AC charger get isolated from the system, and if so how is that managed?
Yes, the GPO the AC charger is plugged into is not powered by the inverter. I couldn’t tell you how they do that though mate! No idea!
I had the same switch installed by ORL on a 12v system so that it excludes the battery charger and the HWS. The latter needs to run on gas

With a Dcdc charger in the vehicle and in the van plus running all the other gear did you have to upgrade the alternator to take the extra load

Would have been nice to, Dmax alternator is only 90a so it’s small in comparison to many tow vehicles. That’s a big part of why I chose enerdrive dcdc chargers, can set the charge current to whatever I want. I found it works for me if I set both at 30a. Can adjust if one battery bank is in need of a faster charge.

Depends on the panel Bill. But generally somewhere around 17-20v I think!

Yesss 24v porn! And air fried dim sims to boot! Serious question though Cam, having individual batteries each with their own BMS are you limited in your max current draw to what one BMS is rated at eg 175a or does it double to 350a? I know most battery banks with individual BMS eg. Enerdrive B-Tec, are limited to what one BMS is rated at. Perhaps a question for ORL.
Gday Henry, effectively it doubles. Because I’ll get the max from each battery. Giving me 350a at 24v, 8400w!

Great video Cam. I’ve followed your family travels since the start of your lap series. I think Jason nailed it on the head with starting point being type of fridge and then what appliances you are actually going to use. We have travelled across the GCR 5 times to FNQ and top end NT but have the luxury of choosing the time of year which means we rarely use the AC when camping but do use it in van parks because we spend more time inside. Also we have a 3 way fridge, don’t use the microwave much and don’t have a bunch of camera gear to charge. 18” van with 160W of solar and 200AHr of lead acid, batteries are 7 years old. 350W inverter for laptop charging. We park in the shade and run out a 200W solar blanket on a lead. My genset has 16 hours on it in 7 years. We only take it down south if we are travelling in winter, don’t bother taking it outback or up north. Never had to worry about power. For some, no upgrade is required.
Would've been better if you put the batteries 300+ back from where they are, in the front of the battery have your mppt/inverter section in a recessed facade. Leaving everthying from the back of the batteries free storage space. :/
Doesn’t worry us mate, we have so many empty cupboards and drawers around the van we’re not short on space 🙂
