Seth Neumann's Oakland Sub is a nicely-crafted HO Scale DCC model railroad layout. If you're from the San Francisco Bay Area, you might be familiar with a lot of the places on this layout.
The focus of this layout is prototypical operations, and Seth provides insights regarding the construction approaches he used to create this layout. Besides being a great guy, Seth is also a professional hiker, a world traveler, and a published modeler who operates an electronics business with model railroading as its focus.

My father was the Assistant General Superintendent of Communications -System. At the general office headquarters San Francisco. 1973 I was a 19 yr old brakeman (nepotism!) . Many times I pushed into that General Motors plant before it was Nummi. Also did Niles Canyon on a run from Bayshore South San Francisco, over the Dumbarton Rail Bridge to Pleasanton. Many of those runs long gone and you beautifully recreated them . My father had a team that created a company called the Southern Pacific Communications Company. SP had the largest privately owned microwave system in the world at the time. Early 1980s SPCC was sold to GTE. The SPCC lived on as the company we all know as Sprint. (Just a side note FYI.) Again thanks for sharing!
I grew up in Pleasanton. Nice to see someone finally model it in a layout!
Great job Seth! Born and raised in the East Bay. All to familiar with the territory you modeled. Remembering all the lease locomotives SP had coming through the Bay Area back in the 90’s. Rail fans delight. By the way, I bought a new TRD off road Tacoma back in 2000. Still have it. Looks and runs great. Inside door decal says manufacture in Fremont. Cheers!
I've never seen a layout that actually gave me the impression of depth. I'm impressed.
I was born and raised in Pleasanton and my uncle worked at the Kaiser gravel pit. So cool somebody modeled it! Great job.
I was a brakeman on the N.C.R.Y, for almost ten years. M.o.w,as well. Good job guys! Watched it twice.
I'll tell Dexter to have a look!

Such an amazing layout, they should be very proud of it. Thanks for the tour and narration.
I have never seen so perfect layout. Congratulations.
This is an excellent segment! I love Seth's strategies for making his backgrounds. This layout is very well designed for operation!
Live here all my life, thanks for sharing something that is local!
I quite like that it’s representing the late 90’s. Nice change of pace in layouts.
Colouring is very authentic....like use of buildings, gives more a 3d view....amazing work
Really nice layout. Really like this.
Hi Seth, great layout, video and description of your layout operations. Many thanks for the mention of my 3D-printed Dry-Bulk trailers on Shapeways. Barry (baztrains).
Great tour of an outstanding layout John! I admire how Seth uses selective compression to create believable scenes.
Thanks Larry! I also think Seth did a fantastic job presenting everything in a clear easy to understand way.
Yes bay area here, fine production guys of a awesome layout.
Thanks for sharing
An excellent layout
Needs So much efforts ...
Big thumbs up 👍🏼
Thanks for sharing again 🙏🏼
In the summer of 1981, I was in my 3rd year working as a Hostler/Fireman/Engineer for Missouri Pacific Railroad in Wichita, Kansas. During that time, Missouri Pacific was going through a pretty extensive locomotive upgrade. Wichita was kind of the end of the line for Missouri Pacific and we ran mostly first generation EMD GP7's, GP9's, and GP18's. I remember distinctly the MP2300 and MP2301 being brought in together fresh from LaGrange. They were so new, they didn't have toilets or radios. Just a hole in the floor on the nose where the toilet would later be installed and a hole in the control stand for the new Motorola modular radios that replaced the gigantic Motorola permanent mounted box radios with the telephone style handsets. 40 years later, I still enjoy working on these locomotives that I cut my teeth on in my youth.
Great video and a beautiful layout
Seth - Loved the tour of your railroad. It has been many years since I last visited and enjoyed seeing the great work you have done.
Awesome layout takes me back to being a kid in the 90s in the Bay Area.
Very nice layout, interesting informations and wow! with a modern passenger train, thanks for this video,John!
As a former gravel/cement trucker & Pleasanton resident, this has a World Class Interpretation of the Kaiser Radum Conveyors & Rock Crusher... I'd love to visit & operate there some day
I thought of you when I saw it!
Well done!
A fabulous layout and a very interesting era to model.
Gosh these layout videos are good!
We aims to please!
I instantly recognized that backdrop of Mission peak. I even see the notable landslide spot -I used to always see that when driving between Santa Cruz and Sacramento. You really nailed the backdrop to depict the prototype! Amazing layout!
Thank you for sharing Seth
Great video as always!
Great video!! I grew up in the Bay Area (Castro Valley) in the 60s and 70s....your layout brings back many great memories.
One of the best things about Seth's layout is how recognizable Niles Canyon is. There are many spots on the layout I can put my finger down on and tell Seth, "I have stood right here." Something about that really makes a connection.
Some of the places on his layout, I've been to. The cement plant, Warm Springs Yard, Milpitas and the transformer plant.
Nice presentation and layout! Well done Seth; thanks for sharing the story.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love Union Pacific Layout tour John, amazing scenery as well
Nice enjoyed the show, great layout.
I immediately recognized Niles Canyon. You captured the feel of the area very well.
I said the exact same thing when I saw the video, pointing out the places by name. Farwell and Hearst are unmistakable.
This is a beautiful layout. Good job!
Very well detailed layout
Well thought out and nicely created as a fellow UP modeler
I love this. This is local to me. I live in San Jose East. Not far from Milpitas.
That is a nice looking railroad......very much enjoyed the vid
Awesome layout my friend.
Awesome Railroad John, great video work to. Backroads Bob
Even better, I'm going to Niles Canyon today to ride the Christmas Train.
Nice union Pacific layout awesome I love see this layout
Awesome layout, thumbs up. But can anyone throw in more shortline action? UP, BNSF, CSX, and NS have been modeled to death. Let's hear it for the little guy!
Muy bella tu maqueta, te felicito
Brilliant atmospheric scenery and attention to detail. I also have a better understanding on American buildings which I’ve been trying to get in the uk model kits but with no joy, however I maybe able to do a scratch build . The backdrop has fantastic perspectives on all angles in my opinion, well done.
I’m going to support and subscribe to your quality content 👍
very cool layout man! i hope to build one as good as this some day but right now im working on a starter layout still
Very familiar.
The Kiser plant would have been at Radium.
How hard would it be to scratch build those auto racks, Love the layout I'm from Napa Valley.
as some one born and raised in Fremont, your beautiful layout captures the area and feel extremely well. Anyway to get a copy of the mission peak Gif?
6:15......u scared ur grounds workers so bad they were frozen still n didnt DARE move until u left 😂
Very nice layout, do you purchase or make your people ? They look very Realistic...
I mat go after up 4014
Bay Area native here - this is an Amazing layout. Is this in a house?
Yes, this is a private layout!
TSG Multimedia I guess I need a bigger house! Did you mention the square footage of the room(s)? If not, any idea of the size?
Depiction of the bay area in the 90's. Where's the graffiti on the cars? Seems he's depicting the 90's through the lens of the 60's.
Still having your customers arrested for bogus stolen vehicle claims??
But what's the point in putting all this effort into this if u don't have BNSF engines?
Idc if ur layout portrays central Africa, it's just no longer fun anymore without BNSF and NS teir 4 GEVO engines....i mean....like....JUST NO! ITS ALL WRONG!!
