Welcome to the Salt Lake Southern model railroad in West Valley, Utah! This is a freelance railroad with Santa Fe, Western Pacific, and the Salt Lake Southern HO scale trains running on it.
Find out how the layout builder, Gary Petersen, decided what to model and how to go about doing it, as we follow trains around the layout.

Great layout and good scale speed. So many railroaders run their equipment like kids; fast and unrealistic. Bad speed means poor illusion of the real thing and that's what model RRs should be for. Very cool.

Wow that's a great idea for a helix loop all open except for the tunnels

I was in Salt Lake City on business in the early 1980's and Gary graciously opened his layout to a stranger from Back East (Wyoming). It was my first exposure to command control and the live helper operations we ran were a blast. I have never forgotten this experience and would once more like to say "Thank you, Gary!" for your hospitality.

The Salt Lake Southern is actually a huge reason for inspiring me to come up with my own Proto-Free Lance railroad. I dont have the space for a layout currently but when I do I hope to paint up a Diesel in the SLS scheme to throw in a consist with my System here and there. Great layout!

I love fantasy railroads. If I had a fantasy railroad it would be called CCTSX (the CSXT version), or Corp. Rail (Conrail version).

Your railroad is a lot like mine. I have 4.5% grades with a lot of reverse curves. It is a fictitious railroad that was a joint venture between UP and SP, and it is called the UP&W or the Wasatch Range. I use helpers on everything as well. I've got a really good formula for helper placement in trains that are climbing the grades. It prevents locomotives from pushing too hard and derailing the train. I will often have 5 units in the lead, and 5 units helping.

Very nice, Thanks for sharing! I've had the opportunity to operate on the SLS several times during the "Great Basin Getaway" ops event and the SLS has always been a fun and interesting prototype operation. The switching job at Sage is awesome. Gary is ALWAYS a gracious host!

Two helpers needed to assist an *_empty_* coal train confirms that a 2.85% grade is indeed pretty darned steep.

I thought Gary mentioned that in the intro but in case I am mistaken I'll guesstimate to the best of my recollection it seemed to be about 20' x 50' or somewhere in that neighborhood.
