Steve seems like a real nice guy and his layout is gorgeous. I love the little subcollection of WP videos that each specialize in different areas of the WP and slightly different eras. You learn so much about the local history that these layouts model in these videos. Great work, John, on all of the layout tours.
I love the name of the Gas company.... Thanks a lot, and again, for the wonderful video. And a big "big up" for the great builders of this layout.
Wow.. I want to thank Steve and his wife for a beautiful layout..and thank John for making this video.. the layout is breathtaking.. thanks for sharing and keep up the great work.. Lance
Battery Powered Locos Recharged By the Track power , That's Gotta be the next Evolution In MRR Awesome . Steve is Well Knowledged on his WPRR which made this a Interesting Video To Watch Cheers TSG
Rest In Peace, glad to have known Mr. Hayes and saw his layout! Even got to run on his helix! I noticed some Napa Pipe cars on his layout, assembled and shipped by the Napa Valley Model RR Society!
Was just trying to look him up, found links to some rather well coordinated ops on multiple layouts across California everything seem to stop in 2019 I’m assuming because of Covid. I had feared that Mr. Hayes may have passed because I couldn’t find any updates 😢 that’s a real bummer I live in Quincy California and took a 10 year hiatus from model trains but I’ve lived next to the wp lines my entire life. Love the historical aspects of the hobby. Does anyone or would u know if the PCR NMRA is still hosting or organizing meetups and op seasons?
Thanks for sharing. I grew up in California resulting in modeling in HO both the WP & SP Railroads. Always enjoyed the over powering the WP was known for on their freight trains. This layout brings back many memories when my family and I were living the Sacramento Valley, SF Bay area, BART, and Turlock. Nicely done. Very impressive model railroad!
Great video John! A lightning strike caused a fire in the AT&T U-verse center in Richardson, Texas on Monday and knocked me and thousands of others off-line and left us without TV also. So I first watched this great Western Pacific layout video on my smart phone (a first for me). I just finished watching it for a second time this morning. I am a great fan of the Western Pacific and model it on my small O-scale hi-rail layout here in my Dallas, Texas home. So this coverage hit all the right spots for me. I especially like Steve Hayes effort to model the entire route from the Bay Area to Salt Lake City. I really enjoyed this one John.
I had a roommate when I went to college at Sacramento State University in 1978 who came from a WP family. Rich Wall. HIs father and grandfather worked for the WP.
The wiring looks crazy (in a good way)! I find it difficult to keep track of the wires in my less than 18 sq. Ft. N scale layout - it takes a lot of patience and skills to maintain something that complex. Great layout, great show!
You can hear about it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/xYZ9TMrMnqk/v-deo.html There's a fair amount of data entry to do in preparation, but once everything is entered, it's easy to generate the jobs.
Very informative video & a great layout. I’m scratching building for my N scale layout a passenger train station similar to the Santa Barbara Amtrak station with a covered walkway that will be along both tracks & a covered walkway set from the station to the covered walkway along the track. I will also scratch build a few water towers for my N scale Southern Pacific Morning Daylight excursion train GS4 4-8-4 number 4449. The water towers will be made from Progresso soup can & dowels.
Steve Hayes have I meet you at the Turlock train show before? It’s always held at the fairgrounds, run by the San Joaquin Valley Toy Train Operators,INC.
Having grown up in Oakland and living in Berkeley I have a huge appreciation of this layout. It also was a great rail history education. Good job on everything. I did have one question. With all of top of the line systems you incorporate into the layout, how come you don't use some type of pulse on the power to make your engines creep?
Yes, Steve, Bruce Chubb's layout is out in fly-over country, however, it's in Grand Rapids, MI...not Wisconsin! :) Seriously, though, wonderful layout and concept. Really enjoyed the tour.
Really nice job Steve, Any chance you can share info on where to acquire the battery power system? I have not seen that particular one and I am interested in giving rechargeable battery power a go. I'll check back to see if you have a link or other contact information. Thanks again for posting a video of your amazing layout
I have a battery powered system and I really love it. No worry about shorts. My system needs to be recharged from an external charger and I want to see just how this system works...
BART service started (Fremont-Oakland line) in '72, I believe. Maybe it was under construction in '67, but you could have skipped BART, IMO. I like the Monkey-Ward building. I remember my grandma taking me there.
Outstanding Layout, what a lot of work. Recognized the Montgomery Ward building right away.I like the Red WP caboose #455 with the WP Herald and the large WP. Glad you have it although like you said there would be cars from later than 1967. That was from around 1980.I wish the WP Museum had gotten one of those. A couple of other things I wish the museum had gotten would have been an operation or fixable U-Boat and they need a GP35 or GP40. I didn't see any U30B's on your layout, maybe it was a little later when WP got those. What road number is your GP35? May favorite is 3005 like in my screen name. when I was in Elementary School I was reading a Train Book and it had a picture of 3005 on it's side in the Canyon after hitting a rock slide. Thanks for sharing this with WP railfans and railfans in General.
Please give me some more information on the battery powered engines. I have one now but am having trouble getting more control systems. I would like to have at least 1 more. Thank you very much...
Sadly the feather river route between union city and oakland is abandoned after the Sp merger in 1996 which is the section that goes along the Bart and then through Stockton the Wp mainline got removed from the yard and through downtown Stockton. All under UP' s control.
Great layout, only one small correction, BART opened in stages from 1972 to 1974, so it was not there in 1967. I like it being there under construction.
I wonder if that rio grande challenger is based on the real rio grande challengers, or if it’s a modified Union Pacific locomotive passing off as rio grande.
My grandfather worked for BN yrs before they merged with SF he retired from BN. He passed away a few yrs.ago. my Dad worked for Frisco for a few yrs before they merged with BN. BN said they would not lay him off they did anyway. So he had nothing to do with them no more. I collect anything railroad now I inherited my grandfather's UP railroad set. My Dad got the BN. I enjoy collecting everything railroad. Fantastic railroad layout. I enjoyed the video.
Fantastic video of a great layout. Thanks for the opportunity to view this layout.
Thanks to Steve for sharing
I just love that the size of the kitchen remodel made for a larger layout downstairs...right on!
Beautiful layout of my hometown region!
Steve seems like a real nice guy and his layout is gorgeous.

Great work, John, on all of the layout tours.
Thanks. I think people find a ton of inspiration in the Layout Tours series and that's very rewarding.
Thanks for the tour.
Great layout,wp lives,me and my father both work for w.p. switchman, always will have a soft heart for w.p.memories.thanks for making the video.
Thanks for the tour and taking us along.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Amazing
Love the Box Car unloader. Nice work and not easy in HO
My father-in-law worked for the WP 1957 to 1975 /78. The California Zephyr was his train. He was a machinist in the Oakland CA.
What a Great Layout and video to. Backroads Bob
that was great !
Just one word....wow!
I had a roommate when I went to college at Sacramento State University in 1978 who came from a WP family. Rich Wall. HIs father and grandfather worked for the WP.
Wow!...
I remember that Montgomery Ward building!
Save the heritage tree! LOL love the sense of humor!
That is SO cool!
This is a great video John! !
I truly enjoyed watching it.
I'm a sucker for 90s era PC, that so looked like my old 486 way back in the day hehe
The wiring looks crazy (in a good way)! I find it difficult to keep track of the wires in my less than 18 sq. Ft. N scale layout - it takes a lot of patience and skills to maintain something that complex. Great layout, great show!
Great video as always! And great layout

Like the vid a lot...I sure learned a lot!
Beautiful layout. Perhaps a future video about how JMRI can create train manifests. Also like the gas distributor.

Battery operated. Wow. Where can you but this?
Battery operated? Whoa. First I heard. What are they?
Do you think It's possible to give a Mantua engine a battery?
Did anyone see the Bridge Unit at the end.
Thx again
Think this is my 3rd maybe 4th time watching just puzzled why no Carlin or Elko Nv, they were quite busy back then , great layout
Please give me some more information on the battery powered engines. I have one now but am having trouble getting more control systems. I would like to have at least 1 more. Thank you very much...
This is a pretty ambiguous request. What information are you looking for, specifically?
@@tsgmultimedia Sorry for being so vague. I just want to know where I can find this equipment and/or where I can buy it...
Steve's battery powered equipment was customized by someone after it was purchased. I thought he mentioned that.
Sadly the feather river route between union city and oakland is abandoned after the Sp merger in 1996 which is the section that goes along the Bart and then through Stockton the Wp mainline got removed from the yard and through downtown Stockton. All under UP' s control.
And now Rapido is producing Bart trains!
Why did the wp never buy co co diesels?almost same as new york centra
Ll
Great layout, only one small correction, BART opened in stages from 1972 to 1974, so it was not there in 1967. I like it being there under construction.
It was in fact being built in 1967. Construction of BART commenced in 1964. Double check your info, please.
I crossed opened and construction dates, the first section opened in 1972.
I can't believe Steve ran that train across the railroad with the chlorine tank car right behind the power. How wooden axle (G)C'mon man1
I wonder if that rio grande challenger is based on the real rio grande challengers, or if it’s a modified Union Pacific locomotive passing off as rio grande.
They really had them (UP designs) - built during WW2. Clinchfield had them, too.
extremely disappointing that niles is on the wood and not on the mountains above like it should be!
That stuff you used on the scenery looks like vermiculite.
