Correctly identified. I come from motorsport with 30 years of experience. Changing a component does almost nothing. An adapted exhaust that can breathe freely, larger fuel injection and an air filter with a larger flow volume lead to a good result. Don't be fooled into thinking that just because the engine sounds a little different you have more power!
    greetings from Germany

Very correct conclusion you have arrived at.
    Stock vs K&N
Both work the same way in all respect.
When you pay five times the cost the performance level raises in your mind!
And on the first throttle we feel. Ah...ha so good. So much freely the air is flowing.
    Then how we get tempted?
I do not have answer. But i did put this filter in my four wheeler. Much satisfaction i got when friends and the mechanics see the sticker and the Caution: Do Not Replace. Only clean and oil.
    And they say Wow.
    Thats all.
    KN needs periodic maintenance.
Not after any specific mileage of run.
But when you see the filter dirty and getting chocked.
A kit is also available from KN.
Wash with the provided soap solution.
Allow to dry for several hours.
Gently sprinkle/apply the provided red oil to moisten the element.
    Wipe clean and fit.
Free flow? How to measure? Difference of air volume passing, between KN and Stock.
Hold both of them on your mouth and breath out. Try to diffrentiate.
Theoritically If difference is there THEN theoratically performance and all is there. That's all. Nothing more. Nothing less.
    Please.

I use K & N filters on my 2008 HD Dyna and my 2017 Triumph Bonneville Street Cup. In my case in Southern California with Low Humidity and at times high winds these filters perform well. K & N Filters were developed In California Desert Off Road Racing in the 1960's. When you see the color Red on your filter it is oiled correctly. When you clean it with K & N approved product the cotton fibers will be white again. Then you spray on the K & N oil and it will turn Red again. I clean every 4000 to 5000 miles. Ride safe.

I have a K&N on my Buell Ulysses.
I recommend using K&N oil on the filter because it’s the oil that captures any dust. If you clean and re-oil the filter regularly and it will last indefinitely. As it flows more air than a standard paper filter it should work well with a free flowing exhaust. A K&N doesn’t usually deliver a significant performance but you should get better kms per litre / miles per gallon.

Hi, this is just my opinion but I've used k&n filters for 20+ years on both my road cars and race and never had a problem. Just be sure to buy the k&n oil spray and clean and re-oil when necessary. I've seen that the himalayan can struggle with high altitude, that new filter should help that. Cheers!

the reason i do have the K&N filter in my motorcycle, is to wash it every 3000km, the oil recharge is design to arrest subparticle from the air, in this way the engine always get the best air flow from the filter.I always check with a white cotton sheet if it get dirt after the filter, it has been clean

To get more power get a bigger engine lol I'm not changing anything on my himalayan because I knew exactly what she was when I bought her 👍 if I wanted more power I would of kept my kawasaki versys 650. The only reason I would have a k & n filter is so i can just clean it and re-use it, but then even the stock you can rinse, dry and re-use. Good vid though, good to know, keep em coming 👍

    Hi
I saw your video, would like to add that the airflow system in K&N is different, if you notice the filter is in the form of triangles and on the folds there are no wholes so the air does not go directly the heavier particles just fall.
    2. Put your original fiter back and fit the intake cover the other way i.e facing the front which will save your filter from taking in mud and slush from the rear wheel incase of off roading. Even the air intake will increase.
    3. Make holes in the inner cover with drill machine and see the huge difference in power in higher RPM with even the original filter

Yes ! I have increased power in one of my Himalayans by upgrading the cubic capacity to 462cc but not by drilling holes in any part of the motorcycle. Maybe it's the " desi " dyno that shows different results to what are available to us here in the rest of world .

Other people have modified the the existing plate so that the centre section is removed entirely. The idea is to leave just a rim to hold the K&N. That will let more air in. The light you see through the filter is where the oil imbued cotton is. Normal. K&N do know what they are doing.

DNA makes a similar air filter, but you can also buy a less restrictive filter mount that lets a lot more air through.

  • @daveinwla6360
    @daveinwla6360 3 роки тому +3

There have been 1 or 2 comparisons of the filtration of dust by oiled element "high performance" air filters such as K&N, DNA, etc., on UA-cam, and the conclusion was that there was a significant trade-off between filtration and low restriction - as any rational person would expect. IOW, performance comes at the expense of faster wear of piston rings and perhaps valve seats. I would rather *reduce weight and moment of inertia* , which would increase acceleration and hill climb speed, and reduce stopping distance. As long as you're OK with an increase in noise and exhaust emissions, an after-market muffler would reduce the weight, and converting to tubeless tires would reduce both the weight AND moment of inertia. There are several UA-cam videos on converting wire spoke wheels to run with tubeless tires by sealing the spoke tensioners inside the rim with caulk and 3M tape. The result of lighter wheels would possibly even be quicker steering.

I had forgotten your comment about maybe the filter letting in more fine dust particles. And when jusing the Filter, you must oil it.!! Its not sure, that the filter is ready for take off after new unpacked.... there is a spezial oil needed direct from and for K&N, also after cleaning with special cleaner by K&N, that's what i have to tell you, it's my experience. May be, that the oil closes the filter-gaze and picks up the dust... may be.

The Himalayan is set up from the factory to run super lean ( hence all the engine heating problems ) and adding this free flow air- intake will only screw up the air pressure in the air box, as the air box is designed for a specific purpose on EFI motorcycles, in accordance with the cubic capacity . Installing a free flow exhaust as recommended by many will decrease the pressure inside the outlet manifold and make the bike loose low end power, where it is needed most in an adventure bike like the Himalayan. The original filter has been designed to filter a specific amount of air into the engine @ atmospheric pressure . The paper filter restricts the this flow and creates a pressure inside the air box, so when you suddenly open the throttle, the fuel injection system consumes the air already existing the air box . The Boosterplug you have added will infarct work better in tandem with the OEM air filter. So, dump this piece of cotton gauze and put the OEM filter back . If you want you can take your bike to the dealership, ask them to hook it up to the Himalayan diagnostic software and increase the fuel injected into the engine. it will give you a better performance @ cruising speeds, run the engine much cooler at high rpm's but increase fuel consumption . These high flow filters were invented to be installed on either turbo charged or supercharged cars where the air is force fed into the engine and not at atmospheric pressure and huge amounts amounts of air are required . Yes ! If your Himalayan had a carburetor engine this filter would have worked wonders as there would be no ECM to monitor the constant change in air pressure, in the air box or air temperature, hence this problem of the engine hunting at low rpm's and misfiring @-deceleration would not exist . I am sure you have read the book by the inventor of Boosterplug , so that should explain it all. I own both the carb and EFI model of the Himalayan and I have experimented extensively . Now for the answer to your question about dust getting into the intake manifold ? The answer is absolutely no ! I have a K&N filter installed on my BS3 ( carb engine ) Himalayan and that bike is in India . I have ridden it on every road and every no road up into the mountains of Ladakh, many many times, where roads are just carpets of dust for hundreds of kilometres and not a spec of dust ever got into the air box . So, you are super safe in Korea .

Not in my field but, what if I use powertronic ecu with redrooster exhaust and stock filters? I’ve bs 4 Indian standard. Will this increase in power will anyhow affect the durability of the engine?

@@thunglamohumtsoe5710 Powertronic piggy back ECU ( 18000 ) plus Red Rooster exhaust ( 8000 ) = 26000 Indian Rupees for an increase of 1.3 horsepower ( Dyno tested ) ??? For that much, I will re-bore the original cylinder head to 480cc, install a new forged piston, connecting rod, wrist pin and piston rings. And hammer out an extra 16 horsepower!!! As for your question about durability, the free - flow exhaust, will only make noise, the Powrtronic ECM will throw extra fuel into the engine since the air pressure in the exhaust will decrease, so the end result will be a noisy bike with increased fuel consumption and absolutely no benefit. The engine will incur damage but only to the piston rings.

Thought you might like this video ua-cam.com/video/sJ3L-E-ufYo/v-deo.html It shows the K&N filter's poor performance at filtering particles. It's a car filter not a motorcycle filter but I expect that the results would be similar for K&N's motorcycle filter.

Thanks for comment. Good link. Since I live if Korea, I hardly could find dusty roads I didn't really care about filtering particles. If conditions were exact opposite I would think to more offroad type sponge filter.
