Andrew's point on the lack of shared reality in a post-truth world is what I think the crux of the issue is. effective discussion & subsequent action is legitimately impossible if the foundations of an argument are not grounded in reality
I think people are focused on hope and mitigation rather than active adaptation because we have time. Even in this Climate Brink chat it is all about climate change being somewhere in the distant future. Sarah Connor mentioned in her latest substack contribution that the fight or flight response was the human reaction to climate change and I directly related that to my long term view that people won't react until their pants are on fire.

I'm not really attacking them for using Mann as a source of information as for wanting to be associated with someone with Mann's extensive character flaws. I'm a big online critic of Michael Mann and have done quite a bit of blogging and commenting on him, especially his lawsuit against Mark Steyn. Mann made his reputation on a hockey stick graph that has been utterly debunked. No he did not discover an unprecedented rise in twentieth century temperature. He used existing temperature records to contrast with his actual finding of a long flat handle that was dependent on two of a hundred or so proxies that were condensed from a couple hundred proxies. The condensing of the proxies was done with an incorrect method that unambiguously mines for hockey sticks and he hid it in undisclosed FORTRAN code! IOW his paper was unreproducible and AFAIK has never been exactly reproduced to this day, which should be a no-brainer by plugging the data into the methods! These are far from the only flaws in his paper. He extended proxy series and even used one of them twice. He did NOT disclose failing Pearson R squared results. Christopher Monckton called his hockey stick the most discredited object in all of physics. I suppose you could could accuse me of doing the same thing I'm accusing Zeke of -- wanting to be associated with a particular character. Yes Monckton is a self promoter and sometimes over the top, but he's nowhere near as toxic and vindictive as Mann. Plus he's witty and funny.
