  • Come with me as I tackle my first road marathon, on the same day as the London Marathon, but a very different race!
The Connemarathon takes place in the Connemara National Park on Ireland's wild Atlantic west coast - an area described by Oscar Wilde as having, 'savage beauty'! See if you think he is right!
Starting on the banks of Lough Inagh, the route goes north west past the Twelve Bens, nearly to Kylemore Abbey, before turning north-east. Passing Creagha and Lough Fee, the halfway point comes after a flat section along the banks of the magnificent Killary Fjord. Turning south-east at Leenaun, , the second half follows the R386 through Ashmount, Rinavore and Breenane, before tackling a 3km climb up to Maam. Finally we ran down past Lough Corrib to Maam Cross to a (hopefully) triumphant finish!

@julianberry what are the aid stations like as I didn't see any in the video?

5.20, great time on a tough course. Do you remember what pace that is per KM/ or mile??

It wasnt consistent - I set off a bit fast and it was quite warm, so was struggling a bit at half-way. The hill at 14 miles then got in my head and it was run/walk from then. I think I was hoping for 10.30/mile pace...

@@julianberry I'm doing the ultra this year, but I'm not sure where the hill(s) start ?? Are there many??

The ultra started before us, so I dont know the first bit, but the marathon had a steep one at half way ( Linane?), then you guys go off and back tto the coast, which is fairly flat I think. The killer is the one at 4 miles from home - long, grinding hill - but then mostly downhill after that!

Thanks Kevin - training around the Appalachians sounds a good plan! Its all roads, but some long inclines in the second half to really test you! Good luck!
