      RUN - is faster than 8.5 MPH (because SOME freak world record holders can walk at 8.5 MPH FOR A SIGNIFICANT DISTANCE). so i'm a runner because i can do an 800 meters at 9 MPH & WANNA DO A 5K @ 9MPH

      @cubebutwithav. I smoke less during the mornings and it changed my bad habit so i smoke less overall. just hasn't fully helped me quit

      I’ve been smoking for 20 years and hated to run at all. Currently I’m not smoking and go running every day (if I didn’t drink yesterday too heavy). 😅

      Yeah shoes are really secondary as you can run in cowboy boots if you had to. Hell our ancestors and even some brave peeps run in no shoes.

    I'm now 75. I stated running in the 1970's . I did run distance races at about 7 mins/mile 50 years later, I don't race, still run but at a much slower pace. Funny thing is that I still feel that I am running fast even though my pace has dropped to around 12 mins/mile. Don't worry about it just get out and do it as long as you can. The health benefits are proven and obvious. Keep running/jogging whatever you call it.

      @@mikevaldez7684 Hello Mike. Where to start? I am 75, but have been running for 50 years so my body is conditioned to it. If you are starting from scratch in your 60s you need to take it very gently or you will become injured.
      The most important thing is your shoes. Get some advice from a shoe shop. I prefer quite cushioned shoes as my old joints benefit.
      Ignore all the weird running methods recommended, just get out and run short distances very slowiy and gently. GIve your body time to recover, it is so easy to become too enthusiastic and get injured.
      At first, breathing is difficult, it will improve as the body adjusts.
      If you have a heart rate monitor, use it so that you can be aware of when you are pushing too hard. (220-age is a good general maximum)
      On my videos where I am wearing shorts, you will see that I wear knee straps. These do help me if my knees get sore, so I tend to wear them all the time.

      @@mikevaldez7684 don't go too fast. Keep it steady and just go at YOUR pace. I'm 51 and did a half marathon a couple of weeks ago. At my pace, not racing, just wanted to complete the distance.

    I consider myself a (beginner) jogger because I move at a (very) slow steady pace. I started my journey by walking for 1 min, then jog for 1 minute for 20 mins total. Now I'm able to jog for 25 minutes straight. I'm going to slowly increase my jog time to 28 min, 30 min and so on. After a year or two when my endurance and speed increases maybe then I might think of myself as a runner.

      Quizás has escuchado el término : trotar. Para mi correr es todo paso/ velocidad que supera caminar y mas especifico en el criterio para diferenciar el correr y caminata: cuando ambos pies están suspendidos, en el aire, ya no estas caminando, estas corriendo y eres descalificado de la competencia. Pero al fin, como le llamen no importa. Lo que importa es disfrutar la actividad.

    Great video! The terminology in German is a lot different: "Joggen" (= jogging) can be used for any form of non-race running, "Rennen" (= running / racing) is usually used for any form of sprinting and "Laufen" (the original term for any movement on legs) is the fitting translation used for running by runners. However, when I tell non-runners that I was "Laufen", they sometimes don't know that I didn't mean "Gehen" (walking).
    So yes, we don't judge jogging, but our terminology isn't clear to everyone and we cannot really stress the hard effort with the word "Laufen" for running.

      Yeah and mixing "Langlaufen" (Nordic skiing) into my winter trainings totally confuses my mum when I tell her that I'm went "laufen". :D

      Still remember the times when the word jogging came into the German language. Before that it was a “Waldlauf” : run in the woods. (Although you could perfectly do it in a park)
      To me in German “jogging” still sounds pretentious. Waldlauf it is for me.

      My other half is Dutch and they have a simillar situation. The movement of walking is "loopen", but if you go for a walk that's "wandelen". The movement of running is "rennen", but if you go for a run that's "hard loopen" (hard walking???). I just stuck "joggen" into google tranlate and apparently you can do that too.

    Years ago, both knees broke. I have arthritis in them and I do not have a meniscus in my left knee. I am now 48 years old and I only run short tracks on soft surfaces. For the last 2 years I have been focusing more on fast walking and I have been using running shoes :-). I regularly walk 250 - 450 km every month. I'm so sorry I won't run anymore. I really like your videos.

    I got the term confused too. I used to see some ppl at parks, going at a pace so slow u can literally brisk walk faster than them. So I had thought it was like this, a run is when ur doing what is biomechanically needed to go faster on foot than u can be walking, and jogging is when ur not at all going for speed but just adding a deliberate bounce or hop in order to get more cardio action than u would by walking.

    For me it's tied to HR zones. I 'shuffle' in Zone 1, jog in Zone 2, run steady in Zone 3, run fast in Zone 4 and sprint/die in Zone 5

    I started running first time this year.i worked as a construction laborer when I was young a change in direction of a straight concrete wall or footing to build strength is called a "jog".thanks for today's video.

    To me the two descriptions differentiate the intention behind the sport. I used to "jog" just for the sake of excercise and then started focusing on doing a marathon. From that point in I started calling myself a "runner". That is just a thing I made up for me personally but it really helps in trainig too because if I don't feel like my trainig is progressing or something I'll just tell myself I'm going out for a jog so my mind isn't on achieving a certain goal and I won't feel bad about not achieving said goal.

      I agree one thing is to say ok I am going for 1 hour run and another is the running preparing for a marathon... that is what I am working now... the difference is to run I wear a regular watch .. for Marathon training it is a special watch... measuring distance..

    I'm a novice runner at long distance; it's been about a year since I started. The question whether I'm running verse jogging has been in my mind since I started taking the sport seriously. I've concluded what was said near the end - I run/jog for health and for enjoyment. I'm not very good at endurance running - and that's okay - since I'm much better at it now when compared when I wasn't running/jogging at all. The criteria now is whether or not I'm "racing", which means I'm looking to complete a specific distance under a certain period of time. This has helped me greatly to keep my own ability in perspective and move at my own pace.

    Let's just be inclusive and follow- the GTN lead by allowing each runner to define their runs and jogs as they will. One of my favourite friends says they "wog" which is so slow it's barely detectable as a run. But they are out there with an elevated heartbeat. That's all that matters. I'm in James' Mom's category and am sure my sprint is a standard marathon pace, but I'm still on the trails and loving it.

    400 meter I can sprint
    1.5 km I can run
    3 or more km I jogg.
    So now It's clear to every one.
    The pace at which your heart rate becomes stable is your jogging, if it's rising it is either a run or a sprint.
    Eluid Kipchoege can jogg at a pace many can not sprint😁😁
    So that is jogging by his standards.He is a human horse😄😄 🐎

    jogging is what i do for warmup/cooldown and running is the main workout, even if the pace doesn't change much on a easy run.

    I would think a jogger is a runner, who exclusivly runs at a slow and steady pace, with no tempo or interval or any other type of session.
    Also nice to know that James jogs faster than I run on a 10k.

    I use a combination of the two. I jog as a way to lower my heart rate but keep it relatively elevated. My running is when I increase my pace and my stride is lengthened.

      I think this is kinda it. When i started i would go at 5 MPH for like 30 minutes and my heart would explode. Now i can do up to 6.5 MPH and still stay at a relative stable heart rate. Any higher than 6.5 MPH my heart rate really explodes and i can only sustain it for a few minutes.
      I can do 5.5 for a couple hours if i really want to. I can do 7.0 for like 6 minutes at most lol

    I thought I just had my own thing with jog vs run. Glad to hear it's common.
    I figured since I'm just doing it for exercise and my goal isn't speed or a 'big' race (just local charity 5ks), it's jogging. My dad did a few marathons in his day, to me that's running!

    Since I'm 65 now and been running my whole life I am definitely not offended by anyone's comments. So happy to simply stride along and enjoy the world go by. The great feeling that running brings during and after is still wonderful.

    Fun video! I don't even think about the distinction when I'm running. I just focus on increasing my endurance. Now getting close to my first mile at a good pace and so far injury free. Hoping to do my first half-marathon this spring or summer.

    I'm 72 and been running and jogging since age 15.
    While I now consider much of what I do to be "steep hiking" and "flat jogging" I think it is important to throw in some short segments of "real running" and "moderately fast running...but not quite sprinting". Doing so such that you don't forget how to run fast.
    Uses quite different muscles. Without such short segments people above age 60 actually forget how to really run.
    I might also add that if possible do much of your hiking/jogging/running on surfaces that are not track perfect.
    Keeps your agility from becoming only suitable for "mall walking".
    Keep variability in your exercise and avoid the "elderly hesitancy" syndrome that makes seniors ever more susceptible to dangerous falls and stumbles from age 70 onward. Actually if you can find a lawn like surface it is not a bad idea to practice falling.
    Going with the stumble or fall is much safer than crashing like a tall tree. Look at how small kids do it.
    One last point. When jogging on uneven trails, you exercise more than your legs and heart. You actually train your brain for continuous brain versatility while looking for safe foot placement. Older brains need that variable workout for more than just cardio, blood flow, reasons. Keep a eye out for roots though. My last fall was due to a toe catching a root on the trail.

    Just because I am 67 years young doesn’t mean I can’t run! Yes I mostly jog and love my Sunday morning runs with my younger mates, ending it with a hot cup of tea on the roadside 💕

    I think when you use the term jogging it gives the connotation that you’re not a professional but an amateur. Being a runner seems to elevate your status to athlete. It’s a question of semantics

    A rather funny characterization of the distinction I have heard is when you are out running or jogging, if you pass someone, they are jogging you are running. If someone passes you, they are running you are jogging

    Jogging=easy/recovery run

    While running you can jog or while jogging you can run or you can call it run,jog or just any one of them! You are the master of your run,so call it any name you want.I am a senior runner/ jogger for more than now for about over 40 years up to date!     Sounds like jogging is just a zone 1 or 2 effort. Simply a variation of easy run. Another workout type to go along side other types such as tempo, threshold or interval. Today is my easy run day where I go for a jog for example.

    Here in Brazil we call it a "walk", or just lets "run". The goal is not be a professional runner, but only exercise our body .

    I’m pretty sure I’m just a really slow runner. I don’t mind if people call me a jogger. My 5k pace is about 10 min/ mile. 10k about 11 min/mile. 1/2 marathon about 12-13 min/mile. I’m so middle of the pack that ever race I’ve done, I’m smack dab in the middle. If there are 100 runners, I’m always 49th, 50th, or 51st. Any advice on how to scramble a little closer to the top 1/3? I’ve only been running constantly for about a year.

    I consider myself a jogger. My fastest pace is 6.07 mins/Km. I'm average at 6.07 to 6.5mins/km and I'm also a newbie with jogging, just started Jan 2, 2022 and never jog ever before in my life. Couldn't even jog for more than 5 mins without huffing and puffing

      To me you're a full runner! I just complete my first 5k lap (at 47) and couldn't do less than 8 mins/km.

      @@OrangePony75 thanks, just doesn't look like I'm running . Yes I'm 54 and started Jan this year. did the 10k a few months ago. Going for 10 mile sin September, half marathon in November and full marathon in December. yes that's pretty ambitious, but doing these with all my friends that are also newbies.

    In Germany we also have a confusing word: "laufen". In the southern dialects, "laufen" means to walk whereas in high German "laufen" means to run.

    I just finished a 5 mile walk in 44 minutes (yes, verified distance and time). That puts me at 6.8787... etc. per mile, which is supposed to the speed of a "run". Of course, I'm not doing race-walking form, but what is called a Rolf-step in Germany where troops there are taught to walk this way to cover lots of ground quickly while walking. I was doing this naturally since my teens and only found out that the style of walk I was doing was the Rolf-step when I was 35.
    I'm 58, btw, and I'm one month out from having abdominal surgery. Don't let age keep you from being physically fit.

    Me and my friends define a jogger as one who comes to a stop light and lightly bounces from foot to foot while waiting for the light to turn in their favor. A runner just comes to a stop and waits. No wasted energy.

      Bouncing/ hopping keeps the body warm, increases elasticity, and keeps you ready to move once the light changes. If there weren’t stops how would jogging be defined?

    I class Jogging as Steady State Cardio , something you can do for a good period of time like a 5km or 10km. And running is when your heart rate peaks quickly and you cant hold for a good length of time. Thats my definition - but im no pro athlete , just a jogger.

    My definition centered on the speed. When I got to an 8 minute mile I considered I was running. That definition slipped a bit when I was training for a marathon. My body traded a bit of speed for the needed endurance. On the great day I did the first 22 miles in 3 hr 15min. That is a bit slower than 9 min/mile. Some of the rest of the distance I was down to a walk. (A walk is easy to defines ,it is when there is at any instant, there is always one foot one foot on the ground the at all times. In running both feet are airborne during every step)

    I jog and run and I did try run walking but felt it a big too weird. I think running is about speed you start to run once that speed goes above 8-9 kmh.

    This dude at work mentioned that I was interested in jogging rather than running. I wanted to say “I beg your pardon you grown up kid”,and not sure how he would have taken it.. i wasn’t happy, certainly wanted to give him a comeback that gave him a knock on his chin. Hate that word.

    I feel like jogging lacks much of a knee drive and has less back side mechanics. Most people are actually joggers. I have tried and tried to develop better running mechanics at an easy pace, but decided to give up and call that jogging, and suddenly these words made sense. But it was only in the past year that I became strong enough to actually “run” for an extended period of time, so I just didn’t know better. To be clear, for me “running” starts around 4:00 min/km but really feels right as I close in on 3:00 min/km. My easy runs are like 5:30 and that’s definitely jogging.

    To me, Jogging is Running with minimal to none FLIGHT TIME.
    If during your run, you notice that at no point in time does your body have no point contacting the ground, then that's jogging.
    In other words, if your leading foot contact the ground when your other foot hasn't lift off yet, that's jogging.

    I sended this to my classmates because when we did P.E. the teacher said to jog around the court 5 times and what did they do? Jog? NO, RUNNING LIKE THEY ARE SPRINTING AWAY FROM THE FREAKING POLICE I was so ANGRY They were running instead of Jogging! I WAS THE ONLY FREAKING ONE WHO WAS FREAKING JOGGING my classmates even PUSHED me to go "Faster" so I was left behind and ofc I did nothing because Im the "shy one" in class and after that I just gave up and walked because of the RAGE I have, luckily Im good at hiding my emotions so thats why I sended this to my classmates.

    Running at age 60 is a lot slower than I used to run. But the effort is the same. 6:40 pace in my 40’s or 8:40 pace now.

    Walking is when at least 1 foot has contact with the ground at all times.
    Running is when at times there is no contact with the ground.

    Jogging is slower but faster than walking, it's only for excercise, and not much about racing.
    Running is faster, it can be exercise and for racing, or for running for ur life, or running to catch the bus.

    I play Frisbee golf, which is now popularized as Disc Golf. All major organizations now call it Disc Golf. Yet, only a decade ago, almost everyone called it Frolfing (Frisbee + golf). Nowadays, like jogging, Frolfing has an almost negative connotation. But, any way you slice it, Frolfing is Disc Golfing, and Jogging is Running. 🏃‍♀

    I suck at jogging. Always start going "too fast" after a few kilometers. My jog pace is between 5:50-6:20/km, depending on the route (I'm 100kg, so lots of hills will slow me down a lot), but I often find myself running at around 5:30 pace and I have to really work at slowing myself down. Sometimes I can keep that pace on the flat when I find my rhythm and still be zone 2, but my HR will be so close to the zone 3 limit, that any little extra effort or just a slight uphill will push me to zone 3, and I really try to avoid that on my easy run days.

    I'm 25 ( hit back in October 23rd of this year) @ now 96kg of weight @ height of 5.7 / 5.8 ft... So my question is- the gym where I'm working out for is at around 4km from my home... Is it ok to jogg to that distance? Will I be able to burn more fat in faster rate?? What are the actual benifits of Pre - workout jog ?

    I would say it's relative. To some people a 7:30 mile is running, to others it's jogging. My rule is, if you can't cover a given distance faster than I can, you have no place referring to me as a "jogger".

    l could do 10km in 55 minutes. l ran everyday for months. but it got so boring, l listened to all music out there, ran on every route 100x, at the point where you need to grab your car to drive somewhere first to discover new tracks…
    l still run but not that often, moving to a different city is the only option i guess, how do i get the motivation back?

    I used to be able to do a 5K in about 21 minutes. During Covid I got out of shape pretty bad. I have been working to get back into shape and I must say, my times have dramatically gotten worse than precovid. I am now doing a 5K in like 27 minutes. Getting back to where I was seems almost impossible right now. I am thrilled to just be able to continue to run and complete my distance goals but is still kind of depressing to know how good of shape I was in and how hard it is to get back to it...but my short term goal is to get to a 24 minute 5K. Any tips? Right now I just try to increase my distances a little and make sure I push myself for periods of time during my run/jog where I am going at a 21 minute 5k pace for a quarter of mile or so and then jog to get my breath back.

      Don't worry; you can easily get back to 5k at 21.00. And after that, get started on going sub-20. One of misconceptions with running 5ks is that you can just put more effort in, on race day, and you'll get your old time back. People tend to beat themselves up and think they're not trying hard enough, which is discouraging (and not true). Here's what you do. For the next 8 weeks, do the following three/four runs a week. On a Sunday, jog 10-12k. Nice and easy, don't get out of breath. This will build your aerobic fitness. On a Tuesday, run 800/1k intervals, five times over. Have a nice rest inbetween. You want to run those hard, and be out of breath. For your third run, which is called 'tempo', run 5k slightly slower than the pace you're aiming for. Your first target will be 25 minutes, which is obviously 5 minute ks. So, if you have a running watch, aim for around 5.1 or 5.2 minute kilometres. I guarantee you if you follow this and throw in more runs here and there that firstly, you will love running again and, secondly, you'll be back to your old time very, very quickly. Running is a grind. Just stick to the process.

    I tend to call anything under 7mph jogging. That said, I also tend to jog at around 6mph more than I run. It doesn’t feel so jarring on my joints.

    I am loosing weight but I am at 325 lbs. or 147.418kg. When I can jog I will be happy just to be able to jog. I have to work just on walking. In fact I need to use an exercise bike right now so I don't blow my knees.

    I'm an old bloke and I reckon there are several stages to running .... there's Plodding, then Plogging (progressing from Plodding to Jogging), then Jogging, (there's also Joggling - jogging whilst juggling), the next level might be Junning, or Rogging ... 'not quite' running, but beyond Jogging ... and finally there's Running ... but I'm sure there are more categories/sub-categories 🤣🤣
