100% agree, Shining Resonance Refrain is underrated and a pretty fun game. Believe it or not, it's the game that got me into action RPGs, and got no regrets over it. I'll die on this hill.

Yeah, I played this game back when it came out and really enjoyed it. I probably wouldn't recommend paying full price for it like I did, but I've seen it on sale on the PlayStation store for less then $10 US and that's more than reasonable for this game.
I have played countless rpgs/jrpgs since 1988. All i can say is i've played better and i have played worse. I enjoyed this game enough to play it all the way thru twice, and 1 day i'll play it again.

Clicked on this cause the thumbnail has Shining Resonance Refrain. The game isn't bad at all imo. Yes it's a generic anime story with generic characters but honestly, I thought the gameplay was fun and the music decent. Really my only complaints are the lack of quality features like good teleporting system, more informative quest logging and the real big one: how grindy it gets during the last 25%. Thankfully I play on PC and you can easily mess with XP values and stuff like that lol. Also, speaking of PC the port is actually really good. Decent options, excellent performance and perfectly playable with a keyboard only.
I'll die on the Star Ocean Integrity and Faithlessness hill. That game is fucking great, I love it. Is it disappointing? Of course, but regardless of its shortcomings it's still fun for what's there, including the Roles/specialties that I love from Star Ocean games. I also really dig the character designs here, despite the hate even that aspect gets. People call the game trash, garbage, etc and that's just so hyperbolic. I could never beat Shining Resonance Refrain. The eletric dragon kept leaving hazard terrain that kills me so quickly. What mechanic or item was I missing?
I was absolutely obsessed with Mimana! I loved the characters and thought the dialogue was hilarious. I stopped playing years ago, and I can't remember why. I need to go back to it!
Your videos rock all the way man. Looking back from your SRR review, I sincerely thank you for choosing Rinna Mayfield for the thumbnail. Keep it up. 👍
One JRPG I really loved that most people I know seem to hate is Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE#. Pretty fun game and I wish the spin-off series would continue
I think the hate is not the gameplay but because they promise to the fans to put the original outfit from the original Japanese version but instead use the censored one that's why many fans get outrageous because of the lie, they even put a formal apology to fan for not informing this beforehand and try to compensate with a full refund
Games on this list I have played. 1.Shining Resonance Refrain: I haven't finished Shining resonance refrain but have enjoyed what I have played of it plus I enjoy the fanservice 2. Akiba's Beat: not that bad but pretty lackluster that I dropped it after 20 hours 3. Star Ocean IAF: dropped the game after a few hours as I got stuck on a battle and quit in frustration 4. Type 0: hated it, quit after first mission.
I for one love Phantasy Star 3, maybe cuz I am older gamer and played PS3 new and back then you played your heart out and made the best of it, the music hits the nostalgia button too.
I loved the concept for Phantasy Star III having a generational story still feels like a unique one. I'd like to see all of the Phantasy star Games get a remake.
To be honest I only bought Akiba's Beat because a) I like JRPGs obviously, and b) the bigger reason was that you get to run around Akihabara and that brings back good memories from when I was there. It doesn't need to be a brilliant game for me. It plays decently enough. A bit janky, but it's decent enough to fulfil it's function in my collection.
I own Shining Resonance Refrain, enjoyed it for a while, but honestly I got burnt out on it part way through. I agree it's not a bad game, but it has significant weaknesses that hold it back. The game is just super repetitive, almost like old-school grind-fest games except that instead of grinding (which has its own sense of accomplishment), the repetition comes from traversing the same areas over and over again, picking up the same loot spawns in the town, going through the same romance/affinity dialogues in town, constantly saving between these things. It just turns into a boring game, unless you're willing to skip a bunch of that stuff just to get to the action. At that point, I'd rather just play a different game. I agree the game gets more hate than it deserves, but I have a tough time recommending it. It's just very mediocre. EDIT: Just finished the video, and I'm shocked Mugen Souls was chosen as the Compile Heart game for this video. I haven't played it, but it looks terrible, and I think a lot of Compile Heart games are more appropriate for this list. My choice would be Omega Quintet. I think there was a lot of good stuff about that game, but the idols-as-heroes thing plus the terrible graphics and level design probably turned a lot of people off.
Akiba's Beat is a hidden gem. I completed the game. A tales series copycat..maybe that's why I liked it so much. A tales game on a modern Akihabara setting.
I don't have an opinon on most of these, but Mugen Souls is a damn fun time if you go in expecting something ridiculous and over the top (it's basically a Disgaea game with the Neptunia combat, the character designs are also similar due to it being an early work from Nanameda Kei, an artist that used to work at NIS alongside Takehito Harada before Kei moved to CH). It's one of my favorites still despite the jankiness and absurd grind by late/ postgame. And Akiba's Beat still scratches that Tales itch since I'm of the minority that still wants to see the Tales series return to the 2.5D combat, and Berseria and Arise, while great games just haven't done it for me.
What unfortunately rather little I played of FF Type-0 PSP (Because what is "free time?"), I loved, myself. It can be difficult to understand somewhat, but I do tend to be able to nail weakpoints and insta-kills even with Ace. Though Ace was a little difficult to do it with because his cards take time to reach the target. Jack especially tended to be weird with how he moves really slowly when he has his weapon drawn, but once I researched the character's playstyles, that's when I pretty much got it. This game is not really like a hack'n'slash kind of action RPG, though. One has to be patient and wait for the perfect time to attack to deal the most damage.
The end cracked me up. My brother has been saying for years he would someday get through all 3 ff13 games…Then he gave up, sold his copy of 13 and 13-2…then changed his mind again, rebought the first one, played it for 20-30 hours and promptly gave up again. Someday, I hear the 3rd part is very good but in order to get there you kind of have to know wtf is going on lol
13 was so bad to me i almost had an emotional breakdown. I really, really gave it a chance, stuck with it for almost 20 hours only because i've always been an avid FF fan: I kept telling myself "it will get better just stick with it". But it was at that 20 hour point i realized this game is just never going to be any fun to play and i was just done with it. I heard the second one was pretty good but the 3rd one i had a certain coworker (who's opinion i trusted on rpgs) told me it was trash and he only forced himself to finish playing through it because he's a hardcore FF fan.
Type-0 is the first game I beat in japanese on the PSP, if it weren't for that I would have never had the guts to import more games in japanese and would have missed on a lot of fun, like one of my favorites Shining Ark and the JP version of Shining resonance. The game itself is messy as you say, but I had a lot of fun and found myself caring a lot for the cast, not to mention I really enjoyed the OST. Was really excited for the Type-1 teaser at the end of the HD version, but alas it'll never see the light of day, truly a shame. Great video, and good list Erick!
Issue with Shining Resonance Refrain that while it's not bad game it's boring middle of that road action RPG when that genre has better and more interesting games. Like mentioned Tales of. In fact only reason why I owned Shining Resonance Refrain is because some reviewer compared it to modern Tales of game.
Really. The only reason I bought it on PS3 with Japanese copy is that I wanted more Tales games to play after I played all the seven games on the system (+ Abyss on 3DS).
I totally agree with you on this. I've played most of the games on this list and loved them, so I never quite understood all the hate. I especially loved Shining Resonance Refrain and I think that more people should play it cause it's not that bad at all.
Haven't played it yet but planning to play through the Star Ocean series and am genuinely excited to play through Integrity and Faithlessness. I honestly kind of love Infinite Undiscovery and I get some vibes of that from it.
Keep in mind Eric and everyone else, people will bitch and complain about anything like their opinion is the only valid one! If you like a game play it regardless of what other people may say, if you like it and find it enjoyable go with it.
I didn't complete Shining, but what I did play I enjoyed...more than I thought I was going to. Got it on a digital sale for $15 Canadian I think it was. I'd say it was worth it.
I tried really hard to like shinning resonance refrain but I just couldnt I did beat the game the problem was that before I played SRR I just finishes trails of cold steel 1,2,3, and 4 and it was impossible to follow up with this,
I honestly recommend playing it if you like action RPGs, but if possible get it during a sale. It's actually fun to play, just not particularly great. It's all around enjoyable imo
Very fun gameplay, but I don't recommend. It's gets grindy, and enemy scales with your hardwork. Making some battles difficult. The story is cliché and the Dragon "Hero" is a big baby. And you'll need to constantly grind up your other unused party members to keep them revelant. Think Pokemon games, with EXP Share OFF.
As someone who's been playing Shining Resonance Refrain on and off for 6 months now, yes it's not a bad game. I'm actually looking for more games like it. I only took a break when MH Rise came out but I still like SRR enough to come back and finish it.
Type-0 eluded me for many years until I found it on the PS4 for real cheap. Gave it a shot, just to boast that I play all ff games and I ended up with the platinum. Have some real love for this game
I liked Shining Resonance Refrain because of the musical references made and final fantasy type 0 HD was one of my favorite games ever played: interesting plot, lots of playable characters, lots of replay value, badass soundtrack that I frequently listen to, and outstanding game mechanics. It’s too bad the sequel never came to fruition.
FF-Type Zero has been on my backlog since it came out. Never know why I never played it. Shining wasn’t that bad and when it came out there wasn’t that many rpgs on switch.
I love Phantasy Star III, and so wish it had been completed. But like you I agree with all the criticisms even if they aren't dealbreakers for me. Star Ocean 5 I actually think it was better than 4. But my all time guilty pleasure is FFX-2. Despite the saccharine plot and writing the job system is interesting and the gameplay is great.
Thank you. Star Ocean 5 was definitely one of the weaker entries in the series, but if you can get past some of the bland cutscenes, it's actually pretty decent. I actually like some of the characters on there quite a bit. If the story didn't focus so much on Relia and her terrible story, I think it could have even been quite good.
What you mean that Mugen Souls had a stupid story? Well, maybe... But I was impressed by how it all ties together at the end. Why that demon girl is an angel, why does the main character has multiple personalities, and how the world came to be! The story is full of interesting ideas that were executed well. (Can't argue about the dialogue part, never understood what makes something badly written.)
“Dawn of Mana” is a big disappointment in my eyes and a waste of a lot cash when I first got it. Honestly I think it’s the money I wasted on this game that makes me hate it so, but I still don’t like the game itself. Mostly for the gameplay, story was fine in my book.
yea, the Tony Taka Shining series wasn't all that bad, just a little cringy when it comes to the standard recipe of "friendship is power". Shining Hearts and it's pastry/baking centric theme is quite cute to me. And the fabulous art of Tony Taka does up the fan service by a notch or two, especially in the following two games that came after Hearts, namely Shining Blade and Shining Ark. Would definitely recommend anyone with a working PSP or emulator to give the series a try. The only caveat is till date, I believe there is still no EN port/translation.
Akiba's beat is also a critique of idols, japanese pop culture and all that, meaning, the japanese may have hated the game because it sounded too true.
You jump to conclusions. It was panned in the west way harder. While I agree it's not that bad, but the criticisms it received were warranted. Aka being boring and feeling like a step back from the previous games(which was due to less time and budget to spend on it) and given the flood of similar games that came out that year that were better, and yeah, it's not hard to see why it got the low scores
@@ericp631 also, yeah, it was repetetive, i like the dialogue, but that must be because i dont really like fan service, i am not a geek, and so, i have appreciate the different approach of that game. of couse, i wouldnt recommend it.
I played Mind 0, Akiba's Beat, Mugen Souls and FF Type-0. And also think they are all good and if I had one complain about one of them is Akiba's Beat and probably only because ot was the PSVita it wasn't that well optimized. Many slow moments.
I'm definitely putting Shining Resonance Refrain on my "To-Play List". It looks cool as heck, and that's enough reason for me to try it out. FF Type-0 is definitely a good game. It has its issues, though, particularly the terrible balancing between party members. I mean, seriously, the game's characters are so unbalanced that I pretty much only used Ace and Rem the entire time, because they were just too good in battle compared to the rest of the cast...
I think the whole cast was actually really good. They just required different skills to make them work. Slice, Jack, Eight and Ace were definitely next level though.
Shining Resonance Refrain is quite a curious case indeed. You can clearly tell that it didn't really have the biggest budget, you repeatedly traverse through the same locations, the battle system is fun yet simplistic, and it reeks of fanservice. Yet the cast of characters is quite likable and the villains are surprisingly interesting (particularly their dialogue and voice acting). By no means a classic, but I cannot help but like it nonetheless. As for Star Ocean 5...I cannot like this game, sorry. While Star Ocean never had fantastic writing, the story here is shockingly trite and I cannot see how it adds to the Star Ocean universe; it's absolutely empty. The characters seem lifeless and uninteresting and are devoid of funny or interesting backstories or private actions. I also cannot believe that Square Enix would treat Star Ocean like low budget trash; the lack of different locations is even more egregious than in Shining Resonance, and they were even too cheap to show a space battle (having the characters "narrate" a space battle was downright embarrassing). Star Ocean: The Last Hope, for all its flaws, was at the very least ambitious and tried to do something with the Star Ocean legacy, and it was huge compared to this. Let's hope the new Star Ocean will follow the example of the first four games...
Phantasy Star 3 is better to play on platforms where you can speed it up... the combat is too slow and like the other Phantasy Star games, encounter rate is way too high. Shining Resonance Refrain is a pretty good ARPG with dating sim elements, but yeah... the Shining label shouldn't be there.
I enjoyed the game too. But I can't ingore that the game has issues. For example; the idea that all the party fights together is cool, but Tales games are already a mess with four characters on the field. In SO5 you have fucking seven at the same time!
Hot take, I actually liked Type-0 way more than FFVIIR. I platinumed Type-0 and only tolerated 8 hours of VIIR's hot mess before dropping it, and still hesitant on wanting to go on.
I was of those who bought Shining Resorance on PS3 with Japanese copy.... Yeah, not that bad, but I never bothered to finish it. At least the songs by Hayami Saori and Mizuki Nana are some of their best.
If the game had 60 fps it would be so damn good. But as it is, it gives me a headache. There's something about the way camera works in that game that coupled with low framerate really hurts my eyes
I saw Rinna in the thumbnail, I clicked like. Shining Resonance Refrain isn't that bad but I feel like having just one big town with a lot of meaningless sidequests really limits it.
PSIII the problem is that The Algol solar system do not exist anymore. And you get to know that when you are beating the game. There's no planet travel. And then PSIV couldn't be a sequel to III because it happens in Algol... So... It's sequel to PSII The Battle System came back with PS1 battles. You don't see your player... just the attacks.... And I thought this was a regression. And there were FOUR endings. So this game is treated as a Spin-off to Phantasy Star.
Honestly Shining Resonance really isn't a BAD game, just... very average, the gameplay is good enough, voice acting surprisingly amazing and the design choices good, but everything regarding the story feels soooooooooo mediocre. Aside from some cases I'd say the soundtracks are mostly forgetable too.
I'm not a story gamer so I didn't mind it at all. For me it was mostly enjoyable cause combat was fun and I actually liked the character interactions and events, really the only things I dislike is having to run around so much and how grindy it gets towards the end. But yeah it's an average game with really nothing that stands out to me positively, but also nothing negatively. And yeah I forgot how good the VA was, it's nice to not have to read every single thing because there's audio and on top of that audio that doesn't make you want to mute it
@@Walamonga1313 character interactions was done really well too imo, it's a shame it didn't... translate well with the main script. Also yeah I think drop rates definitelly should've been higher, having to go against the +20 level above boss monsters multiple times to drop stuff was so tiring. Having a fast travel feature of some sort would've helped greatly.
Well beat Shining Resonance Refrain on Platina and have no regrets. Fun game, with decent battle mechanics and humor... The problem, in my opinion was that many wanted "that" Shining game from 90 but with modern graphic... For some others: Mind Zero - good game with Persona 3 style. Not great, but good. Some edges here and there, but in the end it's trying to tell it's own story, without too many copy-paste. Akiba's Beat... well, too niche game, and at some point you need to lvl up almost every character what is too much trouble, considering that the only party members are getting exp. Mugen Souls is... yeah, Compile Hearts game. But the humor, grind, parody are great, battles are pretty good. Final Fantasy Type 0 is the game... that too many expected too much. SE advanced this game too hard and expectetion were over the roof back in the day. In the end battles were messy, many mechanics are half-working... but the game, with it's very slow start is decent. Not great, but good. Final part is really great, if only they really triede going into 18+ with real loses, nightmares and problems in war, but we got what we got.
Phantasy Star III is one of the biggest examples of "What Could Have Been" in gaming history. Everything about the game was ambitious. The graphics and music, the setting, the multi-generation storyline, the morally complex themes (Orakians vs. Layans as a thinly-veiled analogy for racism, both societies hypocritically subverting a universal prohibition on murder by using cyborgs or genetically-engineered monsters to do the killing for them, etc.)...it could have been an all-time great. But the production cycle was cut short, and as a consequence, the gameplay was a disaster. And because of that, not only was the game a flop, but even worse, it led to Phantasy Star IV--which was supposed to wrap up the main series--retreating into a shell, churning out just a PS II clone with a few gameplay improvements, *worse* graphics, and a dull, uninspired story that wrapped things up with a whimper, rather than a bang.
Mugen Souls is nice if you imported the Japanese version. One of the games that NISA screwed over due to censorship causing the fatal game breaking bug.
Shining Resonance Refrain is far from a bad game. It has its flaws, but they can be overlooked if you like JRPGs enough. If you're looking for a new Tales-esque game and can find it for cheap, you can definitely do worse out there. Just as long as you can get it at around $20-$30. Any more would be too much.
Langrisser would have been so much better without the bobblehead guys flopping about. It's also held to that higher standard because Langrisser 1 (and I guess 2) were held with such high regard. Kind of like poor Vandal Hearts 3. It's not really *that* bad but because it's a sequel to two amazing games, people hate it.
currently playing Shining Refrain and I would agree it's not terrible, it start out okay but after awhile you just stop caring about everything and just want it to be over with. And as Mimana IC this game I had a lot to complaint about like combat, navigation and bugs but the writing is decent and most people will put up with it because of it, but unfortunately I didn't. The combat was way to buggy and frustrating for me.
Ha, I like this top 10 idea! Played the majority of the games and its pretty much true...stay away from anything that has compile heart or idea factory. You pretty much nailed it with SO5. Really bad if you're a fan of the series but playable if you've never played the others. Star Ocean 5 was a very mediocre game that reminded me of a phone game, I couldn't even tell you a character's name. My buddy got his copy for free from another friend and sent it to me, so we have this traveling cursed copy of SO5 that no one wants. I'm still a huge fan of the game but will be waiting for a bit of time before grabbing star ocean 6 when it comes out (soon I think?)

XIII-2 is better than anything on this list, actually
I love the 13 trilogy but I enjoyed the ending to this video with shooing them away, made me laugh a lot. Fun video 😊

Liking the Emperor Edelgard shirt.
And thanks to this, I'm now interested in getting Mimana Iyar Chronicle and Shining Resonance Refrain.
11:40 - Ah this game. Mother of mercy. This game was so bad that I thought the Star Ocean series was dead. I'm serious. Jeezus.
On a side note I have several games on the list FF 0, mugen souls, mugen souls z, shining resonance
I didn't complete Shining, but what I did play I enjoyed...more than I thought I was going to. Got it on a digital sale for $15 Canadian I think it was. I'd say it was worth it.
I tried really hard to like shinning resonance refrain but I just couldnt I did beat the game the problem was that before I played SRR I just finishes trails of cold steel 1,2,3, and 4 and it was impossible to follow up with this,
Shining Resonance looks like something I'd enjoy. Maybe it's one of those games that's great in every regard but the story.
Honestly, the story is my favorite part (and it's not exactly amazing). The game is fairly mediocre.
whats that tshirt? which character is that?
As someone who's been playing Shining Resonance Refrain on and off for 6 months now, yes it's not a bad game. I'm actually looking for more games like it. I only took a break when MH Rise came out but I still like SRR enough to come back and finish it.
Try Nights of Azure 2
"Modern setting? Similar to Persona? Maybe I'll give Mind0 a try."
"...first person..."
"Never mind."
Daaaaang bro! Nice Edelgard swag shit you’ve got there!!
Phantasy star 3 was the very first rpg i played and holds a very special place for me, and your choices do make a difference.
That's shirt rocks man!!! I need one of those :'p
Waiting for a hot take on Time and Eternity. 😊
@@ericp631 still right, but the japanese normally like these kinda games, thats why i was describing why even them didnt like it.
You should write advertising copy...
"Buy our game! It's truly NOT THAT BAD!"
Let's hope the new Star Ocean will follow the example of the first four games...
that star ocean was actually my most favorite from the series, love the combat.
I really enjoyed SO5 at the time, was surprised at all the hate. Oh well. We will see how 6 turns out
Me too
I enjoyed the game too. But I can't ingore that the game has issues. For example; the idea that all the party fights together is cool, but Tales games are already a mess with four characters on the field. In SO5 you have fucking seven at the same time!
I actually liked having everyone in the battle. It’s good for an indecisive person like me who wants to use all the characters.
Way too short to be a mainline series.
Come on we all know that you secretly love Time and Eternity. :p
But seriously i expected Valkyria Revolution for #1.
Hot take, I actually liked Type-0 way more than FFVIIR. I platinumed Type-0 and only tolerated 8 hours of VIIR's hot mess before dropping it, and still hesitant on wanting to go on.
Wish we had a 3D tactical JRPG Shining game.
I was of those who bought Shining Resorance on PS3 with Japanese copy.... Yeah, not that bad, but I never bothered to finish it. At least the songs by Hayami Saori and Mizuki Nana are some of their best.
I absolutely loved Akiba's Beat. Hell, I prefer it to Akiba's Trip.
the music in shining resonance refrain makes it worth a playthrough
I am amazed but also very glad that Star Ocean 5 somehow didn't kill the franchise.
Final fantasy type 0 is one of my favourite final fantasy games
If the game had 60 fps it would be so damn good. But as it is, it gives me a headache. There's something about the way camera works in that game that coupled with low framerate really hurts my eyes
I saw Rinna in the thumbnail, I clicked like. Shining Resonance Refrain isn't that bad but I feel like having just one big town with a lot of meaningless sidequests really limits it.
You know you're in for quality when there's under noon on the cover.
I really liked Shining Resonance Refrain.
Erick i just beat valkyrie profile and im about to start silmeria, awsome games!.
I liked Akibas Beat and I loved Star Ocean 5
PSIII the problem is that The Algol solar system do not exist anymore. And you get to know that when you are beating the game. There's no planet travel.
And then PSIV couldn't be a sequel to III because it happens in Algol... So... It's sequel to PSII
The Battle System came back with PS1 battles.
I really enjoyed the FFXIII trilogy! Now I’m Erick’s public enemy :D
Mugen Souls is freaking awesome! ❤️❤️ Very complex yes but I still love it 😊😊😊
I like Phantasy Star III better now than when I played it originally. I was severely disappointed
Looking forward to this video.
Love Langrisser Mobile on my Samsung Galaxy Z FOLD 3!!
Nice Shirt! And nope I won't obey you. :)
Well beat Shining Resonance Refrain on Platina and have no regrets. Fun game, with decent battle mechanics and humor... The problem, in my opinion was that many wanted "that" Shining game from 90 but with modern graphic...
For some others:
Mind Zero - good game with Persona 3 style.
Yeah, well I'm also one of those people who think time and Eternity isn't that bad. I actually bought it and like it.
LMAO at the ending!!! And the “FF 13” trilogy isn’t “that bad”, it’s WORSE!!!
Nice one bro. Grtz
Ah... Shining Resonance.... my Loading Time game... I need to finish it I guess... yeah, I agree it's not that bad...
Happy to see Star Ocean 5 here.
Loved your T-Shirt of El
Type-0 was so good, recommed to it to all
I have Shining Resonance Refrain on Switch and it's not bad at all.
A great list (IMO). I need to admit that I truly like more than a half of these games🤘🏻
The problem with PS3 is that for all the gimmick of multigenerational story, the multiple endings feel unsatisfying. All of them.
Yeah the Star Ocean is ok, i'm a big SO fan and I enjoyed some part of the game, I dit the main story once on normal difficulty and that's all...
