What can anyone say? In the face of that solo, my guitar is just firewood! Haunting chord-melody. The tops. Barney was truly one of the few greats. RIP.
Amazing in how the chord melody tells a story... Amazing in the sheer number of chords used and how they seamlessly run together... Amazing in the pure sound of what he's playing.. This is simply amazing..
Barney Kessel,, an underated, under exposed master guitaist,,, I was very lucky to see him at Walt Disney world in 1980 at the "Top Of The World Lounge" along with Marion McPhartland and some other greats like Ira Sullivan, and Bucky Pizzarelli and his son John!
My first question (after I recover emotionally from the beauty and the fog clears) is, how much of this was worked out in advance, and how much was improvised? I'm not underestimating Kessel's obvious genius, but I suppose it would be more fathomable to us "mere mortal" jazz guitarists if we knew at least a considerable portion of this was "practiced".. For to just "produce" this off the top of one's head is even more mind-boggling.
I would guess not much was worked out previously Barney was know to improvise on the spot and his extensive knowledge of chords was above most players even today his chordal solos are a master class
Unsurpassable for chord-melody. Technically brilliant. The 'Poll Winners' series of albums are a compendium of magic with Ray Brown and Shelly Manne (1958-61)
totally ahead of times....jazz, yes, but also "new wave" and impressionist, as a guitarist- creating magic atmospheres with small themes coming from different influence, like the "asiatic" intro arpeggios that is played twice in the song, as moments of melancholic introspection, and beautiful, cinematic musical imagery...personally I think that he was one of the greatest, after Wes...
If Erik Satie would have lived a few decades after his own time and played the guitar, this would have been how hw sounded... deep impressionistic undertones in Barney's aproach with chord- melody
Apparently in most of his career he used tube amps, probably Fender, and in his later years he used Solid State amps which I can't remember the name of
usually in house... i read somewhere he traveled with just his guitar, on trains and on the bus... this video makes me feel he missed his sound check hence the minor adjustments on his tone at the start.... (if any 6string purists read this and think I'm being a durp about his variable tone switch, barney doesnt go near the variable for awhile) a lot of his live shows have such different tones... all you gotta do is listen to thebarney kessel bootlegs
Never tire of listening to this beautiful version of this song. doesn't get any better than this.
It was my great pleasure to be a friend of this wonderful man.
RIP Barney.

Listening to this beautiful music by candle light on what would have been his birthday.

masterful!! what chord melody chops. beautiful voicing's seamlessly connected. great post!!!
Barney is not a flashy guitarist like we have today but he's got feeling, tone, taste, swing of course, and soul.

It's a piece called Shadow of Your Smile.
"Off the top of ones head" - No it's not.
Simply Gorgeous!
Amazing version!
one of all time greats..who was hanging with Bird(!!!!!) and played him too.
Best version of this song by far, beautiful playing.
A better guitarist than me gave me the chords yesterday. They take some following! Of course, Barney
can do it effortlessly.
Unsurpassable for chord-melody. Technically brilliant. The 'Poll Winners' series of albums are a compendium of magic with Ray Brown and Shelly Manne (1958-61)
Well I sure can't play it like that. Excellent!
Beautiful playing!

George Benson has a superb Organ Trio version with Jimmy Smith
when he was quite young too.
I like them ALL!!!!🎸🎼🎵🎶🎹🎻🥁🎛🔊🎷🎺🎻😀
What amp do you think Barney was playing at this gig?

Some of the chord harmonies sound shite to me!!
