I completely agree. My absolute favourite jazz guitar player. Barney Kessel, best by test as the late Robert James Fischer used to say. All the best from Jean Feys, Belgium
Yeah, but because he doesn’t do it while standing and/or jumping around people tend to forget the big name rock guitar heroes weren’t as good. And when I say “people,” I mean schmucks like myself!

Funny. I watched that Grant Green show just before watching this. BK probably has more “technique” but I find GG more musical, more melodic. But they’re both masters.
Kessel was a great Jazz guitarist but he also worked as a studio musician being a part of the famous Wrecking Crew in Los Angeles. Many Jazz Musicians doubled as studio musicians because playing Jazz didn't pay well. Jazz musicians are the best so they do well as studio musicians where you have to be able to play any kind of music and do it quickly. To do that you have to be an excellent reader, have a great ear and be able to improvise on the spot.
At about 25:10 he busts his high E string and then gets across the finish line with only five strings. Truth be told, I bet he'd still sound pretty good on only one string.
Amazing how they start the last tune-the blues in a pretty slow/medium tempo and end up in much faster tempo.I like that, I get annoyed when people are in my case for speeding,it’s worse to slow down.
I attended this concert (Maison de L'ORTF, Paris, 1969). Barney lined with Kenny Burrell and Grant Green) for an unforgettable event. Back then, I was 19. I decided not to think too much to become a pro musician and to stick to my medical college... BTW, Bob, I'm very curious : as a French, I never had the opportunity to access to the concert footage. I know, there was a TV crew on site, but they never aired the concert. Where did you get this gem (high sentimental value to me)...? PS : His cover of "Here's that Rainy Day" is unique (not recorded on any album)
Amazing sound quality, the trio is so tight, gibson archtop with charlie christian pick up, sonor drum set, double bass extraordinaire, (would like to know the cymbal's and amplification's brand), highest rank musicians
It's great how barney is able to hold the whole thing together on those uptempo tags when the rhythm section is falling apart and dropping the time all over the place...
I was lucky enough to watch Barney in many club dates in the 70ies over here in Germany. What a musician ! Great memories !
He was so simple, as I see today. Even though I was not born when he was alive, I love him.
Barney Kessel is legendary.

Number two is you stepped out of a dream.. update! I was wrong it is falling in love with love
The second tune is 'Falling in Love with Love'
El tema número 2 por Barney Kessel es "Falling in love with love". También cantada por Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett y otros.
One of the greatist guitar players ever. ❤🎉
When he solos, you hear the approach of a piano player. One of the greatest ever. We were blessed to have heard his music.
so what. who cares. is a piano player's approach better? no. and how is it exactly like a piano player's? He told me personally otherwise.

69 was a peak year for Barney
Barney pumps out some of the hippest licks on the planet here... thanks for posting! :)

Barney is my favorite jazz guitar player by far
My favourite is herb ellis. What do you think about him?
2. Falling in Love with Love
What a great find ! Brilliant !
With Barney are Larry Ridley (bass) and Don Lamond (drums), who also accompanied Grant Green on the same tour.
N.B. the second number is Rodgers/Hart "Falling in Love with Love" and not any of the other bad wild guesses suggested below.

Barney has big band chops in his great phrasing .Love it.
Thank you for posting.
I was 8yrs old.
I remember my father playing the lps.
Great 🎶
I liked Les Paul, a real innovator, but Barney was the best. Big smile on the face of this 80 year old.
He rubbed shoulders with Charlie Parker and Charlie Christian when he was young and it shows, no wonder Lenny Breau dig him so much.
@ 25:14 Barney breaks high e string, didn't even notice before
And he did the right thing, which is keep playing.
@@jpaul251 Christ, he doesn't even blink!
In a career like his, this probably happens many many times. It shows by how unphased he is
Such a beautiful player
Barney Kessel, a guitarist's guitarist! Always amazing!!
Barney was a universe of his own.
thanks for posting this 💌

Great !! Thanks 👍.
It was amazing when a string was broken and he followed ahead like if anything was occurred.

There’s a set by Kenny Burrell too..
I guess there must be. I've located two out of the three, but up til now I haven't been able to locate the Kenny Burrell.. Finger's crossed :-)

I have all three together plus G Green and B Kessel and I've posted all of these on youtube .. but no Kenny Burrell
Barney Kessell, Howard Roberts, Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, Jimmy Raney, Tal Farlow, Wes Montgomery
I think that is Stan Levey on drums.
Don Lamond

Nice! Plays the blues with 5 strings better than most can with 6! Curious to know what he said in the beginning.
